Sometimes the best way for a performer to gain screen time is to write their own material — and there are dozens of multihyphenates who have balanced writing and acting duties on their respective series this season. That’s particularly true in comedy, a genre that sees many series led by performers who mine their own lives for onscreen laughs. (See, for example, HBO Max’s Bridget Everett-led Somebody Somewhere, Peacock’s Pete Davidson vehicle Bupkis and Netflix’s Mo, co-created by and starring Mo Amer.)
But running a show is also a great way for an actor to branch out into the directing field. This season, these five actor-writers also helmed episodes of their Emmy-contending shows.

"I'm being transported to other dimensions every time I orgasm." Roku has revealed the official trailer for an upcoming mini-series titled Slip, the latest creation from actress / director Zoe Lister-Jones. She got into directing with two indie films, Band Aid and How It Ends, and this series looks like it was a film idea that she adapted into content for Roku since they are funding it. Premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival before it's streaming via Roku in April. Restless in her marriage, Slip — starring Zoe Lister-Jones — follows Mae through a surreal journey of parallel universes, married to different people, trying to find a way back to her partner, and ultimately, herself. It seems to be based on her own life - as Zoe recently parted with her husband Daryl Wein, who she worked with on projects over the years. The cast includes Tymika Tafari, Whitmer Thomas, Amar Chadha-Patel, & Emily Hampshire.

Exclusive: Over two and a half years after Titans special effects coordinator Warren Appleby was killed while prepping a shoot for the Warner Bros superhero series, a Toronto court has finally handed down some justice.
Acme FX were fined $110,000 in Canadian dollars plus a “25% victim fine surcharge” on February 22 by Ontario Court of Justice. Equaling around $109,000 Usd, the relatively light financial punishment came after the Etobicoke-based company entered a guilty plea in provincial court under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act for not ensuring “the machine, device, tool or equipment is in good condition.”
The final charge was the lesser of those original set against Acme FX, but the first court was withdrawn, according to court documents. Perhaps even more cruelly, industry vet Appleby was a partner in Acme FX.

This review of “How It Ends” was first published after its January 2021 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The cheeriest movie ever made about Armageddon, “How It Ends” started as a way to be productive during the pandemic and ended up as a cameo-studded lark that also manages to be a touching examination of the regrets we carry around. Writer-directors Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones keep things light on this scenic tour of Los Angeles by foot, but they also manage to bump up against some big ideas without letting their comic tone get too blue.

Produced, written, and directed by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, How It Ends was born out of the lockdown we’ve found ourselves in the past year-plus. The Sundance, SXSW, and Tribeca selection is an apocalyptic comedy in which the freewheeling Liza (Lister-Jones) scores an invite to one last wild party before the world ends. But making it there won’t be easy, after her car is stolen, and the clock is ticking on her plan to tie up loose ends with friends and family. Accompanied by her younger self (Cailee Spaeny), Liza embarks on a journey across Los Angeles, running into an eclectic cast of characters.
Ahead of a release in just a few weeeks, MGM has now unveiled the trailer for the film also (briefly) featuring Olivia Wilde, Fred Armisen, Whitney Cummings, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Helen Hunt, Nick Kroll, Lamorne Morris, Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks, Tawny Newsome,...

A year ago, it really did feel like the world was falling apart and maybe an asteroid hitting Earth would have been a good thing. The world was in the midst of a global pandemic and the US was experiencing the most toxic Presidential campaign in the history of the country. This is on top of the protests against racism and various other issues going on. And in the new film, “How It Ends,” it’s clear the filmmakers were pulling from real life to gain inspiration for the end-of-the-world comedy.

"It's like an existential scavenger hunt for your soul." "Yeah, I guess..." MGM Studios has unveiled a trailer for an indie comedy titled How It Ends, which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (here is Zofia's review). The film was made during the pandemic last year and it follows Zoe Lister-Jones as she roams around an empty Los Angeles meeting her friends for brief and strange encounters. In this feel-good apocalyptic comedy, Liza embarks on a hilarious journey in hopes of making it to her last party before it all ends, running into an eclectic cast of characters along the way. She's joined by a physical manifestation of her younger self, played by Cailee Spaeny. The huge ensemble cast features Olivia Wilde, Fred Armisen, Whitney Cummings, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Helen Hunt, Nick Kroll, Lamorne Morris, Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks, Tawny Newsome, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Marshall Green,...

Here’s a look at three more genre-related projects that recently played during the 2021 Sundance Film Festival: The Blazing World from Carlson Young, the end-of-the-world comedy How It Ends, and James Ashcroft’s Coming Home in the Dark.
The Blazing World: For her feature film debut, Carlson Young (who many genre fans will remember from her days on Scream: The TV Series) takes us on a nightmarish descent into the fragile and fractured psyche of a young woman named Margaret (also played by Young), who has been living with the trauma and grief caused by the accidental death of her twin sister decades prior. As she contemplates committing suicide, Margaret finds herself transported into an alternate world where she is tasked with retrieving a series of keys by a mysterious man called Lained (Udo Kier), who sends her on a journey that will force her to confront her demons...

What would you do if you knew that the world was ending? Liza, played by Zoe Lister-Jones, sleeps in late, then eats the tallest stack of pancakes possible. For her last day on Earth, she decides to participate in her friend's farewell party. But first, Liza has a few tough conversations lying ahead. Lister-Jones, also the co-writer and co-director of How It Ends, perfectly captures Los Angeles' panorama while teaching us about the significance of loving yourself and dealing with past regrets. If you're asking about Liza, there's one weird, most incredible thing about her. No, it's not the fact that she invented an app and now lives in a large, modern house. It's that she is constantly in the presence of her younger self. Younger Liza, played by Cailee Spaeny, is a personification of conscience for the older Liza. She's there to listen to her and advise her. She's usually invisible,...

Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones were holed up in their Los Angeles home last spring, despairing about the pandemic, when they got an idea: What if they channeled their feelings into a story that showcased this surreal moment? The end of the world never looked more unbearably sunny or cheerily welcome than it does in writer-director duo (and real-world couple) Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein’s How It Ends, a light, breezy neighborhood walkabout through one woman’s last day and night on Earth. A bit too lightweight and twee for some and not lightweight or twee enough for others, How It Ends offers a surfeit of casual, surface-deep charms, from Zoe Lister-Jones’s engaging turn as Liza, a thirty-something LA woman facing the prospect of the apocalypse with uncommonly good cheer and the ever-present companionship of her once imaginary, now fully embodied, independently minded, younger self (Cailee Spaeny). Young Liza functions as a Greek chorus (minus the Greeks or the chorus, but with the never-ending...

Sundance went virtual for its 2021 edition, but that certainly didn’t slow the market down. Within a matter of days, Apple broke the record for dealmaking at the festival by scoring eventual Grand Jury prize-winner “Coda” for a whopping $25 million; Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut, “Passing,” landed with Netflix for a reported $15 million deal as the festival came to an end. Meanwhile, a number of highlights from the lineup are enmeshed in bidding wars as sales agents sort through their options, including Questlove’s celebrated documentary “Summer of Soul” and Jerrod Carmichael’s twisted buddy movie “On the Count of Three.”
Since those movies don’t exactly need our help getting on buyers radars, we’re leaving them off our usual memo to distributors in favor of a number of titiles that could really use the boost. The year ahead is certainly going to be an unpredictable one for distribution...

It’s been quite revealing to see how the film and television industries have responded to the limitations imposed by stringent regulations during the pandemic. We saw a few shows like Connecting… and Social Distance, the Coastal Elites special, and radically different release strategies from studios and streamers. What excites me most is the way that filmmakers have used new approaches to create stories that don’t directly reference what’s going on now in the world but try something innovative instead. To best illustrate this, let’s look at How It Ends, the new collaboration between Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, who were last at Sundance with White Rabbit in 2018.
It’s the end of the world – a comet is headed towards Earth and so there’s literally going to be no tomorrow...

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, which was forced to take place largely online, with scattered outdoor screenings and socially-distanced events in cities around the country. But the pandemic has also impacted Sundance creatively, leading to an opening four days in which filmmakers have used a variety of techniques and genres to grapple with the issues of a virus that was just beginning to surface when the last in-person Sundance took place in Park City a year ago.
The most obvious example is the opening-night documentary “In the Same Breath” from Chinese-born director Nanfu Wang, who came to Park City straight from China in January 2020, and then found she couldn’t rejoin her husband and son there because of the pandemic lockdown. Her film includes wrenching footage from Wuhan in the early days of the virus but expands to look at the Chinese...

"I have never been loved by anyone the way that you have loved me, and I am so sorry that I haven't known how to love you back." Zoe Lister-Jones utters this beautiful line with such emotion, you might expect it to be part of a dashing romantic monologue. The reality is much better and more heart-wrenching. In How It Ends - which premiered at the virtual Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 29 - Lister-Jones's Liza explores her insecurities at the end of the world with her metaphysical younger self, played by Cailee Spaeny, by her side.
