Social media has been both the downfall and saving grace for rising actor Ivy Wolk, who just made her film debut at Cannes Film Festival in Sean Baker’s critically lauded “Anora.”
The 20-year-old L.A. native started making irreverent comedy videos in the early days of TikTok when she was just 14, amassing over 200,000 followers on an account called @fathoodbitch. But when she scored her first real acting job on the Freeform sitcom “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” she was forced to delete it — so she returned secretly in the midst of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic under the handle @livesinasociety. As her TikTok following grew even larger, the tide of public opinion began to shift. People on the internet unearthed old offensive tweets of hers, and before she knew it, Wolk found herself shunned. At the same time, she was dealing with the death of a friend.

How many actors, executives and Gen Z TikTok stars does it take to film a gory, dinosaur-filled, possibly life-threatening blockbuster during a global pandemic? In the case of Cliff Beasts 6, the movie at the center of The Bubble, it takes a gaggle of zany characters. The dark comedy, directed by Judd Apatow, sees this ragtag cast try to safely and successfully shoot the film while navigating personal issues, grievances with each other and the ever-present threat of Covid-19. But as production continues, it becomes clear that no one in the bubble prepared for every worst-case scenario.
Even if you’re a newcomer to the Cliff Beasts franchise, you’ll recognize a lot of familiar faces among this fictional cast and crew. Here’s everyone who made it into the bubble — no spoilers on who makes it out.

It’s funny that both of Jerry Seinfeld’s movies have been pegged to such high-concept premises, as the sitcom legend famously built his brand with a show about nothing. In fact, that might be the funniest thing about them. First came 2007’s deeply strange “Bee Movie,” in which Seinfeld — who produced, starred in, and co-wrote the project — voiced a honeybee who starts getting hot for a human florist. Now comes Seinfeld’s directorial debut, a sketchy and surreal business parody that re-imagines the rush to invent the Pop-Tart as if the rivalry between Post and Kellogg’s were as crucial to the future of western civilization as the Space Race or the Manhattan Project.
It’s the perfect streaming comedy for anyone who felt that “Oppenheimer” had too many laughs.
Why would an aging billionaire spend two years of his life — and an ungodly amount of Netflix’s money...

Judd Apatow has directed such comedy films as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Trainwreck, among others. Despite his recent The King of Staten Island and The Bubble going straight to streaming, he still believes comedy films have a place in theaters.
“The highest-grossing comedy last year made over a billion dollars. Barbie was a comedy,” Apatow said in an interview with Vulture on the Good One podcast.
Barbie is “not a drama,” Apatow said. “There are some emotional moments in it, but it’s just wall-to-wall jokes. There’s something about it where I feel like no one wants to give comedy the win there. Like, why can’t we say Barbie is a comedy? What other category would it be?”
Apatow thinks the genre just needs “another hit or two” to mount its theatrical comeback, citing Hollywood’s propensity to imitate success. Apatow said producers will “chase anything...

We live in an era where we all know exactly what “content” means – or, rather, what it has transformed into. But is it something that is harmful to the industry as a whole or do the benefits outweigh that? Well, Judd Apatow has a few things to share…
Apatow gave his thoughts on the relation between the penny-pinching ways of studios and the seemingly constant passing back and forth of programs due to contracts that limit when a movie/TV show is available to stream on any given platform. “It’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back Barnaby Jones.’ They’re going to do it, then you’ll get fewer new shows. They realize, Oh wait, Netflix can just buy shows from HBO,...

Cillian Murphy has been winning numerous awards for his lead role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Recently, he has just won the BAFTA Film Award 2024 in the Best Actor category and is a clear frontrunner to win this year’s Academy Award as well. Apart from his as-usual class acting, one thing that caught the attention of the fans was his staggering fees for the movie. As per the reports, Cillian Murphy was paid a high amount of $10 million for the lead character of J. Robert Oppenheimer in the movie.

Actors would not be actors if they didn’t, at some level, want all eyes on them, but there’s a difference between creating a character and getting asked “what drew you to this script?” 750,000 thousand times.
In a cover story with GQ, Cork, Ireland-born 47-year-old Cillian Murphy, a strong contender to win the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” spoke a bit about the trap some actors get into—which he calls living in “The Bubble.” He said that actors who don’t go out and live (and maintain friendships with people in other fields) lose sight if they only go “from film festival to movie set to promotions.” And the topic of promo tours helped him get something else off his chest.
“I think it’s a broken model,” he said of the parade of red carpets and press junkets.

No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”

Sebastian Stan is set to portray a young Donald Trump in a movie from filmmaker Ali Abbasi.
The Apprentice began principal photography this week and features an ensemble cast that includes Jeremy Strong and Maria Bakalova. The film focuses on Trump as he builds his real estate business in New York City in the 1970s and ’80s, according to media reports.
Abbasi (Holy Spider) is directing from a script by Gabriel Sherman. The latter’s biography of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room, was the basis for Showtime’s 2019 miniseries The Loudest Voice that starred Russell Crowe.

Perhaps the biggest movie news of the week dropped a few days ago, which is that Pedro Pascal has been cast as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in Marvel Studios' upcoming "Fantastic Four" film. After breaking out as Oberyn Martell on "Game of Thrones," Pascal has been a part of other major projects like "Narcos," "Wonder Woman 1984," "The Mandalorian," and "The Last of Us." By joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is Pascal at risk of becoming overexposed?
Perhaps not. As /Film's Ryan Scott points out on today's episode of the /Film Daily podcast, Pascal is a terrific performer, but his past few years have not exactly been overflowing with hits. "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," in which he co-starred opposite Nicolas Cage, made less than $30 million worldwide. "The Bubble," "We Can Be Heroes," and "Triple Frontier" quickly disappeared into the Netflix netherworld. "The Last of Us" seemed like a big deal,...

It was revealed last year that Judd Apatow was developing a sequel to This Is 40, the “sort-of” sequel to Knocked Up. This Is 50 would catch up with Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) in the next stage of their lives, and although the project is still in the works, it appears to have been put on the back burner for now.
While speaking with The Playlist, Judd Apatow said he’s got a new project written and ready to go once the SAG-AFTRA strike concludes. “I wrote a film; I’m just waiting for all these strikes to end to see if they’ll allow me to make it,” Apatow said. “So, my life is in Fran Drescher’s hands. As it’s always been.” He wouldn’t spill any details on the new project, only to say that it would not be This Is 50.

Daisy Ridley, the cornerstone star of Disney's recent "Star Wars" trilogy, has a new movie out in theaters right now. Unfortunately, it seems like getting that news out to the masses proved challenging as hardly anyone went to see the film in question, which is director Neil Burger's "The Marsh King's Daughter." Sad to say, the movie tanked on its opening weekend, failing to even crack the Top 10 on the charts despite playing on more than 1,000 screens.
"The Marsh King's Daughter" debuted at just $849,120 over the weekend, putting it all the way at number 13 on the charts, per Box Office Mojo. Even Disney's re-release of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" made more, and we're talking about a 30-year-old movie that has been in re-release for three weekends.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for series five of Ghosts
Somehow, the final series of Ghosts has neatly tied up all the show’s loose ends while still leaving us wanting more – which is a jolly good thing considering they’ve confirmed we’re getting one more Christmas special in December 2023.
They really packed a lot into those last six episodes, revealing the heartbreaking truth behind the deaths of Kitty and the Captain, showing Alison and Mike’s next step in life, and giving the whole gang the opportunity to say all the lovely, touching things fans wanted to hear (as well as adding a poignant reference to Mary in the opening credits).
Taking the characters on these final journeys involved lots of flashbacks and new faces, so let’s recap all the most important guest stars from series five:

Daisy Ridley is returning to the silver screen this fall in "The Marsh King's Daughter," and it looks to be another unique entry in her filmography after wrapping up the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy in 2019. Based on Karen Dionne's novel of the same name and hailing from Lionsgate, this is an action/thriller that sees Ridley going toe-to-toe with another "Star Wars" alum by way of "Rogue One" in the form of Ben Mendelsohn, who is playing her estranged father. Let's get ready to rumble.
It's the latest in a string of unique, post-franchise choices that Ridley has made, including starring in the unfortunately disastrous YA adaptation "Chaos Walking" or giving comedy a go in Judd Apatow's "The Bubble." She also starred in the drama "Sometimes I Think About Dying," which debuted at Sundance earlier this year. And yes, she's going to return as Rey in a galaxy far,...

We won’t get to see Mandy Patinkin’s adorable real-life marriage become a TV show after all.
Showtime has scrapped four series that were in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter, led by Seasoned, a comedy based on Patinkin and his wife Kathryn Grody’s 43-year marital bond. The comedy, which was first announced last year and earned a six-episode series order at the network, was to star Patinkin and Grody and follow “the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple.”

While much of Hollywood endures a forced vacation due to strike-related shutdowns, Frank Marshall has a different way to stay busy. Over the past three years, the producer best known for overseeing the “Indiana Jones” franchise with his wife Kathleen Kennedy has moonlighted as a documentary filmmaker. “I’m lucky that as long as I break even I’m happy,” Marshall said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “I really love the excitement and freedom that documentary filmmaking brings.”
Now, a few weeks after journeying to Cannes for the premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Marshall arrives at the Tribeca Festival to premiere “Rather,” an affectionate portrait of 92-year-old news anchor Dan Rather. He has one feature in production, the “Twister” sequel “Twisters,” which is halfway done, but other announced projects like “Spinal Tap II” have been put on hold. Douglas Booth, Alison Pill and Iris Apatow have joined an adaptation of the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe classic “The Sorrows of Young Werther.”
The film, simply titled “Young Werther,” is produced by Toronto-based film and TV outfit Wildling Pictures, which describes the project as a modern retelling of the book.
Booth (“That Dirty Black Bag”) and Pill (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) will take lead roles, with Apatow (“The Bubble”) also set to star along Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”). Production will begin this month in Toronto.
Drawing from Goethe’s passionate personal accounts, which were first published in letter form in 1774, “Young Werther” is the story of a charmingly irresponsible and enthusiastic young man named Werther (Booth) who finds himself at the mercy of Charlotte (Pill), whose allure and commitment to her impressive fiancé Albert turns Werther’s life upside down.

Leslie Mann and Iris Apatow turned the 2024 Chanel cruise show into a mother-daughter date night. On May 9, Mann and Apatow attended the fashion brand's latest resortwear presentation in Los Angeles, wearing Chanel outfits and matching red lipstick for the occasion. Standing side by side on the red carpet, the duo looked almost identical in their coordinated ensembles. Like Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson or Reese Witherspoon and Ava Phillippe, Mann and Apatow's lookalike status is worthy of a double take.
As they modeled for the camera, the duo also struck similar poses, highlighting their uncanny resemblance. Even with invisible eyebrows, Apatow was undeniably her mother's doppelgänger. For years, the comparisons have poured in, following the stars across every joint red carpet appearance. Still, time continues to reveal even more striking similarities between the mother-daughter duo, including a shared appreciation for designer fashion, apparently.

Now in its second week, the WGA strike has shut down productions, pushed back release dates and, perhaps worst of all to some, given Judd Apatow another platform. Apatow has come out swinging at the studios, saying they not only have the endgame planned out for the strike, but even the exact date it will end. Sounds like a bit of a conspiracy theory, no, Judd?
Speaking with Variety, Judd Apatow said of the strike, “I think they probably already know what they’re going to bend on…I would assume they already know what date this is going to end. They’ve probably been planning this for years.” He added, “I always think that whatever happens, they could have figured it out already. When these things conclude, you never go, ‘I understand why it took that long.’ It’s never something so inventive, and groundbreaking, that you think, ‘Oh,...

It's the end of an era. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is the final James Gunn film at Marvel Studios as he's moved on to head up the Dcu with producer Peter Safran. The last outing of the Guardians team we know and love is going to be emotional for a lot of fans, and the team itself is in pretty rough shape when we find them. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is still pining for the other version of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who died in "Avengers: Endgame," and this version doesn't have the same memories or interest in him. Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) is having nightmares about his past, and everyone is still trying to come to terms with what they've been through over the past few years.
As for Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff), they're starting to act more like sisters in terms of bickering than actual sisters Nebula and Gamora.

Sebastian Stan and Maria Bakalova, both veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are attached to star in a new spy comedy for Paramount Pictures with Paul Feig attached to produce and potentially direct, TheWrap has confirmed.
Jenny Bicks, a screenwriter known for “The Greatest Showman” and “Rio 2,” is writing the script based off of an original pitch. Plot details are currently unknown.
Feig is probably best known for directing “Bridesmaids,” which began a string of profitable, high-concept, female led comedies like “The Heat” and “Spy.” In 2016 he directed the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot, which became a cultural flashpoint, cutting short a potential franchise and leaving Sony to quickly revert to a more traditional approach with the release of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021.
Since “Ghostbusters,” Feig directed the delicious dark comedy “A Simple Favor,” “Last Christmas” and most recently “The School for Good and Evil” for Netflix. Feig is currently in production on “Grand Death Lotto,...

Israel’s Reshet 13 is attached to “Dust and Coal,” selected for Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
The eight-episode thriller focuses on a Mossad assassin, Esther, whose world collapses when her father reveals to her that she is, in fact, a Syrian sleeper spy. Planted in Israel as a child, as part of a Kgb program, her activation time has come.
Produced by Ronen Ben Tal for Bental Productions Ltd and France’s Morgane Le Moine for First Love, the show was created by Ben Tal, Ron Ninio – who will also direct – Eleanor Sela and Ofer Seker, co-creator of “Uri and Ella”, now airing on HBO Max.
“It’s a dark, realistic psychological drama. The spy arena is just an excuse to explore complex family dynamics and our main character’s journey of emancipation,” says Ben Tal, also promising an insight into the “backstage” of spy missions in Israel.

Judd Apatow was tasked with hosting this year’s Directors Guild of America Awards and wasted little time centering his jokes on some of the key players of the awards season. One particular target for Apatow was Tom Cruise, star of Top Gun: Maverick, the director of which (Joseph Kosinski) was nominated.
Apatow played it light at first, taking jabs at Cruise’s height, which are easy and juvenile enough. “The special effects in Maverick were so top notch, I couldn’t even see the stack of phone books Tom Cruise sat on to reach the flight controls.” Thankfully, Apatow didn’t turn it into a 10-minute bit, thus making the ceremony shorter than most of his movies.
Apatow then focused on the elaborate stunts Cruise has become even more famous for. “Remember when Tom Cruise jumped up and down on the couch and we all thought, ‘What a lunatic!

Judd Apatow served as emcee for the DGA Awards on Saturday night, and he kicked off his show-opening monologue by taking a few shots at Tom Cruise.
“The special effects in ‘Maverick’ were so top notch, I couldn’t even see the stack of phone books Tom Cruise sat on to reach the flight controls,” quipped Apatow of Cruise’s height, as reported by Variety.
“Remember when Tom Cruise jumped up and down on the couch and we all thought, ‘What a lunatic!’” Apatow continued, referencing Cruise’s much-mocked 2005 appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”.

Judd Apatow Skewers Tom Cruise in DGA Awards Monologue: His Stunts ‘Feel Like An Ad For Scientology’
A month after Jerrod Carmichael used the Golden Globes stage to mock Tom Cruise for his involvement in the Church of Scientology, Judd Apatow got in a few similar jabs while emceeing the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The jokes began with the topic of the “Top Gun” star’s height: “The special effects in ‘Maverick’ were so top notch, I couldn’t even see the stack of phone books Tom Cruise sat on to reach the flight controls.”
“Remember when Tom Cruise jumped up and down on the couch and we all thought, ‘What a lunatic!'” Apatow said, referring to the infamous 2005 incident on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” “And now he rides a motorcycle off a cliff and Base jumps and we’re all like, ‘Tom’s fine!'”

“Yop,” “Unspoken,” and “Asma” look like potential standout titles at this year’s Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, still one of Series Mania’s industry centerpieces which in 2023 is shaping up in many ways to be a bumper edition.
Running March 21-23, the Forum hosts now a swathe of ever building industry initiatives at Series Mania, which unspools in Lille, northern France, over March 17-24.
450 projects from 66 countries answered the call for admissions, an all time record, said Francesco Capurro, head of the Series Mania Forum.
“We have more and more projects from outside Europe. An increasing number from Africa: Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria, which is very encouraging, as well as from other big markets outside Europe, like Canada, Turkey, Taiwan,” he added.
Reasons cut various ways for Capurro: “Series Mania is getting more and more well known, including outside Europe. The Lille-based event has also established highly productive partnerships with key industry bodies,...

Ballet has captivated audiences for centuries — there's something effortlessly elegant about it. In a surprise to no one, stories revolving around ballet make for intriguing movies. It's a world we know so little about — where there's always a mile to go, a bigger goal to accomplish.
In recent times, most films centered on ballerinas tend to include themes about achieving greatness while navigating jealousy in a cutthroat industry where attaining perfection isn't a need; it is a necessity. There's already an exciting take coming out in the form of the "John Wick" spin-off starring Ana de Armas, in which the actress plays a dancer-assassin who sets out to exact revenge for her family — and there's another, totally-unrelated, action-thriller flick also centered on ballerinas being helmed by Vicky Jewson (The Witcher: Blood Origin) from a script by Kate Freund.
It's called "Ballerina Overdrive" and it features one hell of a cast.

The first titles to be released under the deal will be Cannes 2022 selection Godland.
Scanbox Entertainment has added Aurora Studios as its exclusive Finnish theatrical distribution partner through its distribution subsidiary Cinemanse.
The deal covers all Scanbox titles, both acquisitions (usually made on a pan-Nordic basis) and its in-house productions, which are ramping up.
The collaboration will boost Scanbox’s connections to local productions in Finland while giving Aurora and Cinemanse an expansion of their theatrical slate.
The first titles to be released under the deal will be Cannes 2022 selection Godland by Hlynur Pálmason followed by The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Hettie Macdonald.

From Gunpowder Milkshake to Ballerina Overdrive, Lena Headey sure does know how to pick projects with awesome titles. Deadline just announced the latter action-thriller today, which also features Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish), Isabela Merced (Father of the Bride), Lana Condor (Moonshot), Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place) and Iris Apatow (The Bubble).
David Leitch is producing Ballerina Overdrive, which oddly enough seems to have nothing to do with Ballerina, the upcoming John Wick spinoff.
In Ballerina Overdrive, “A troupe of ballerinas find themselves fighting for survival as they attempt to escape from a remote inn after their bus breaks down on the way to a competition.”
The film is said to feature “dance-based action choreography,” and it’s being launched at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin by Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans for international and CAA Media Finance for domestic.
Kate Freund (Afterlife) wrote the script.
