Pearl Jam concluded the spring US leg of their 2024 tour with a rousing hometown show in Seattle on Thursday night. Among the many highlights was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” performed solo by frontman Eddie Vedder.
“In any other city there’s no guest list as big as the one that we have when we’re in Seattle,” Vedder said in introducing the song. “To be honest, I wish it were longer. There are certain names that I so deeply wish were on the guestlist tonight, but we lost them too early and in ways that we could never imagine. Damnit if I can’t stop thinking about them. But that’s a good thing too.”

The Spiderwick Chronicles released on Roku this past Friday and as part of the show’s press junket, I got to sit down and talk with two of the show’s stars. Beloved character actor Christian Slater, known for classic 80s and 90s movies like Heathers and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and recent TV hits like Mr. Robot and Inside Job, who plays the show’s villain Mulgarath; and the lovely and talented Joy Bryant, known for films like Honey and Get Rich or Die Tryin’, who plays Helen Grace.

The documentary will invite viewers on “a deeply personal journey through the worlds Lange has captured with her Leica M6 camera during her more than twenty-year career in photography,” according to a release about the project. “Something About the Light will take a nuanced, highly original approach in translating Lange’s photographic oeuvre for the screen.”

Uncoupled won’t get a second chance at season 2 after all. A year after Showtime rescued the series, they opted to cancel it before they ever filmed a scene. The series, which followed a 40-something man who finds himself surprisingly single and out of touch with the dating world, aired its first season on Netflix in July 2022. The streaming service provider dropped the series six months later.

Netflix added nine million subscribers in the last quarter of 2023, so while there is now an oversaturation of streaming sites giving them a run for their money, Netflix still seems to be at the top. The streaming giant is expected to spend more money creating new content even though they canceled more shows in 2023, like fan favorites Shadow and Bone, Fate: The Winx Saga, Inside Job, and Lockwood & Co. But with new shows like the live-action adaptation of One Piece being a success in the United States and Japan, with the right shows scheduled for 2024, the...

“Blue Eye Samurai” has been renewed for a second season at Netflix.
Created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, “Blue Eye Samurai” tells the story of Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword. Set in Edo-period Japan, Mizu lives a life in disguise seeking the deliverance of revenge.
“When we started this project, we made a commitment to take this very personal story set in Edo-period Japan and bring it to life in the most authentic and beautiful way possible. Our animators, historians, musicians, martial artists and voice cast made this a reality beyond our expectations,” said Noizumi and Green in a statement, per Netflix. “We are thankful to our entire team and to our viewers from all over the world who have shown such passion for Mizu and her path of revenge. In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.
As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

“Rick and Morty.” “Futurama.” “South Park.” ”Bob’s Burgers.” “Archer.” “The Simpsons.” “Family Guy.” “American Dad!”
What do these shows have in common? For one thing, they’re the Top 8 most popular adult animated comedies, according to a Ranker list that’s been voted on by 50,000 TV fans. But the shows also all premiered at least 10 years ago — and as of the writing of this article, they’re all still on the air. (“Archer” will officially conclude with a special finale event in December.)
The story of adult animated comedy arguably begins with the runaway success of “The Simpsons,” which premiered back in 1989. Since then, each successive decade has brought with it a crop of new and seemingly inexhaustible cartoon series, from “The Simpsons” and “South Park” in the 1990s, to “Family Guy” and “Futurama” in the 2000s, to “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” in the 2010s. Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Every year, the Cannes Film Festival program yields its riches. And every year, documentaries are kept to the selection sidebars, with the exception of just three over the years, two of which won the Palme d’Or: “The Silent World,” co-directed by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle in 1956, and Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004.
This year, out of 16 documentaries in the Official Selection, two are in the Competition, the first time nonfiction titles have joined that storied roster since Moore’s inclusion.
This is progress, but a quick glance at the latest Palme d’Or predictions reveals that Wang Bing’s “Youth” (marking the first 3.5-hours of an eventual 10-hour triptych) and “Olfa’s Daughters” from Kaouther Ben Hania are not high on the list of likely winners. Both are recognized by critics as boundary-pushing examples of the form but seem unlikely to become consensus award picks from Ruben Östlund’s eclectic Competition jury.

It has all the makings of a new and disturbing trend in television — companies taking fully produced, unaired series and moving them off their books — but insiders are hesitant to say whether cancellations like what we saw today at Showtime, as well as what has happened at Warner Bros. The CEO of Netflix has said that the streaming giant has never “cancelled a successful show” – leaving many subscribers incredulous.
Earlier this week, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters gave an interview to Bloomberg.
The interviewer asked the duo: “How was the evolution of your business affected your relationship with the creative community?” adding that people online are “constantly” outage about shows being cancelled.
Sarandos answered: “We have never cancelled a successful show. A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget.
“The key to it is you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience at a large budget. If you do that well, you can do that forever.”

Netflix’s new co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters have addressed a major elephant in the room: the streamer’s decision to cancel fan-favorite TV shows.
Among the most recent cancellations that have sparked outrage on social media are “1899,” “Inside Job,” and “Warrior Nun.” However, Sarandos maintained while speaking to Bloomberg’s Screentime newsletter that the company has “never canceled a successful show.”

The Neil Patrick Harris vehicle "Uncoupled" has been canceled after one season on Netflix, according to Variety. The gay rom-com made just eight episodes before getting the axe; even the combined star power of Harris and "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star behind the camera couldn't save it.
"Uncoupled" followed Harris as Michael, a New York City real estate agent whose heart gets broken when his partner, Colin (Tuc Watkins), decides to leave him after 17 years together. Michael spend the next eight episodes attempting to get over Colin (when he's not trying to win him back), get the hang of the modern gay dating scene, and navigate relationships with his friends and a wealthy real estate client (Marcia Gay Harden). Harden received a Critics Choice TV nomination for her turn as a brutally honest woman going through a situation that parallels Michael's, but otherwise, "Uncoupled" didn't make much of a splash.

Netflix has released what could well be the streaming giant’s next big true-crime hit.
The service has unveiled a feature-length exploration of a man who became a viral sensation in 2013, and the deadly events that followed.
Titled The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker, the film follows Kai Lawrence, a homeless person who prevented a man from trying to kill a woman after “smashing” him round the head with a hatchet.
After a video of him detailing the incident was shared online, Lawrence was hailed a hero and received instant fame. Chat shows hosts lined up to interview him, and musicians, including Justin Bieber, requested collaborations with him.
However, Lawrence’s story didn’t end there. Just three months later, he was on trial for the murder of New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy, which he claims was self-defence.
The trailer starts with the narration: “Have you heard about Kai, the hitchhiker hatchet hero?...

Once upon a time, fans could relax once their show had been renewed for another season. Not any longer. Several shows have had their renewals rescinded in the past week, and we now have another one. Netflix has changed its mind and cancelled the Inside Job TV series, so there won't be a second season after all.
An adult animated sci-fi comedy series, the Inside Job TV show was created by Shion Takeuchi, a former Gravity Falls writer. Warner Bros. Discovery took a lot of flak in 2022 for axing finished movies and series — most infamously, the Batgirl movie — and removing some legacy titles from its HBO Max streaming platform. As it turns out, the company may have been ahead of the curve.
A fresh wave of cost-cutting moves at other companies, ranging from Disney to AMC Networks, has made Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels seem prophetic.
“We got a lot of public noise about some of the content write-offs that we took, which is a reflection of an industry that went overboard and that went on a spending frenzy,” Wiedenfels said at a Citibank conference on Jan. 5. “We shaved off a lot of the excess last year, and I think that’s something that everyone else in the industry is going to go through. We’re coming from an irrational time of overspending with very limited focus on return on investment,...

At first, it seemed like a bizarre anomaly: In August, Warner Bros. Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav decided to shelve the already-finished HBO Max “Batgirl” movie — forever. Many more projects were not only canceled but also removed from their services, ranging from already-renewed series fresh off of their first seasons and in production on the second (like “Minx”) and others that were supposed tentpoles (like “Westworld”).
Dozens of culled shows and movies later, HBO Max had a hastily dug graveyard strewn with existing content mowed down by accountants. It looked like bean-counters gone wild — but when Wbd currently holds nearly 47 billion in net debt, every dollar counts.
“We’re done with that chapter,” Wbd CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said last week of the barrel-burn. He referred to 2022 as “a year of restructuring” and 2023 as “a year of relaunching and building.”
Wbd may be done right-sizing its pipeline — but the industry is not.

Television increasingly has been taking advantage of tax rules to save money by scrapping shows that already have been completed.
Pioneered by Warner Bros. Discovery, which scrapped series such as the second season of Chad and reality competition The Big D, and followed by AMC Networks, which has axed shows such as Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and the second seasons of 61st Street and Pantheon, which largely were completed.

The new streaming strategy of canceling shows that have already been renewed is here to stay. It's a heartless cost-cutting tactic, but it's one that's been employed more than once now by both Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix. While the former canceled HBO Max's "Minx" after giving season 2 the greenlight and pulled TBS' "Chad" from the lineup right before it aired, the latter may have started the trend when it axed "Glow" in a stunning reversal of a previously announced renewal.
Now, Netflix is at it again with "Inside Job." The animated comedy about a company that manufactures global conspiracies aired a two-part, 18-episode first season across 2021 and 2022, and then it earned a second season renewal last June. But now series creator Shion Takeuchi has confirmed on Twitter that "Inside Job" is joining the great big cancelled shows pasture in the sky, as its second season isn't happening after all.

The predator becomes the prey in the season four trailer for “You.”
Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, returns as Professor Jonathan Moore in the season 4 trailer for “You,” which aptly features the song “I Ran (So Far Away)” by Hidden Citizens.
The beginning of the teaser sees Joe attempting to reconnect with Marienne, played by Tati Gabrielle. She quickly shoots down his efforts. “You’re a murderer, Joe,” she tells him. “You’re wrong about me. I’m gonna prove it to you,” he insists.

Netflix’s Gilmore Girls wannabe series Ginny & Georgia has returned for its second season.
Picking up right after series one’s cliffhanger, the second run follows the aftermath of Georgia’s (Brianne Howey) lies as they begin to unravel, with daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) struggling to cover for her.
And though the new episodes manage to explore mental health and racial identity in a way that leaves audiences with far less second-hand embarrassment than that of its 2021 debut – lest we forget Ginny and Hunter’s “Opression Olympics” – they still manage to maintain a healthy dose of teeth-clenching dialogue.
So, here’s a ranking of Ginny & Georgia’s season two dialogue... starting with the cringe and ending with the utterly painful.
Warning, possible season two spoilers to follow

Back in June 2022, fans of “Inside Job” were thrilled when Netflix announced it was ordering more episodes of the adult-oriented animated comedy created by “Gravity Falls”/”Regular Show” writer Shion Takeuchi.
The series follows the exploits of Reagan Ridley and her cohorts at Cognito Inc., the deep-state, top-secret organization that operates as a shadow government, responsible for all the world’s conspiracy theories.
Fast-forward to January 2023, with those same fans shocked and angered by Netflix’s subsequent announcement that it was axing plans for a second season, and was instead cancelling the show.

Pedro Pascal has spoken about the one major rule from HBO he broke before filming The Last of Us.

Netflix has swung the axe on yet another show that ended on a cliffhanger.
In recent months, the streaming service has prematurely called time on several cult titles, which has led to frustration from users.
These cancellations include 1899, Fate: The Winx Saga and The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself.
On Monday (9 January), Shion Takeuchi announced on Twitter that her series, the adult animation Inside Job, would not be returning for a second season.
Inside Job follows anti-social genius Reagan Ridley (voiced by Lizzy Caplan) and her dysfunctional team, who work to hide the world's conspiracies.
After receiving acclaim, it released its second batch of episodes in 2021, and the finale ended on a cliffhanger that left viewers desperate to find out what happened next. Sadly, they never will.
“I’m heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel Season 2 of Inside Job,” Takeuchi shared in a message via Twitter.

Netflix’s Wednesday easily repeated in the top spot on Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals, again busting through the 5-billion minute threshold.
For the week of Nov. 28, Wednesday amassed 5.3 billion minutes viewed across its eight episodes. That brings its two-week tally to 11.3 billion minutes, which is second only to the 12.3 billion minutes that Stranger Things racked up from May 23 to June 5 (and that was with 32 episodes available).

Wednesday has already taken its place as one of Netflix’s biggest series based on the streamer’s internal measurement. Now comes outside confirmation of the show’s breakout.
The Addams Family offshoot racked up almost 6 billion minutes — 5.988 billion, to be precise — of viewing time in the United States during its premiere week of Nov. 21-27, according to Nielsen. That’s the second largest week in the two-year history of Nielsen’s weekly rankings, trailing only the 7.2 billion for Stranger Things 4 from May 30-June 5.
The series is just the fourth to pass 5 billion minutes of watch time in a week. Stranger Things has done so three times, while Tiger King and Ozark each did once at the height of pandemic lockdowns in March and April 2020.
The previous week’s top series, The Crown, fell off by about 38 percent, though it still crested the...

When "The Sandman" announced it was being renewed for a second season, you may have noticed that they didn't actually call it season 2. They referred to it as "a continuation of 'The Sandman' world," not clarifying the number of episodes or exactly how much of the source material would be covered. For most adaptations, this would be an easy question, but because "The Sandman" comics are split into volumes of varying length and structure, there are a lot of different approaches the show can take.
Speaking to Netflix's head of scripted series Peter Friedlander, a reporter at Variety offered a theory for why the word "season" was never used: "It's not called season 2 because it's going to be handled more in line with the comics, where it's 'volumes' and based on the story in the issues, rather than being labeled as a season? Is that it?"
