We're nearing the halfway point of 2024, and Apple is still doing its best to mimic Pinky and the Brain with world domination in mind, at least on the streaming front.
Credit where credit is due. Apple is nothing if not on-brand when it comes to quality over quantity.
There's little doubt that some programs popping up on Apple TV + over the years have been duds, but quality duds indeed.
What Is Time Bandits About?
Apple has announced its next assault on our streaming lives by turning back the clocks to an oldie but goodie known as Time Bandits.
For the uninitiated, Time Bandits is a 1981 film by Terry Gilliam. It is a dark comedy filled with Gilliam's bizarre filmmaking aesthetic.
Taika Waititi, Iain Morris, and Jemaine Clement lead the way as co-creators and co-showrunners.
With Lisa Kudrow (Friends and The Comeback) on board in a leading role, prepare for some serious buffoonery.

Now, we finally have a first look at the series thanks to EW's summer TV preview.
Kudrow will lead a cast that also includes Kal-El Tuck (Unseeing Evil), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Tadhg Murphy (Conversations With Friends), Roger Jean Nsengiyumva (You Don’t Know Me), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), Kiera Thompson (Martyrs Lane) and Rachel House (Heartbreak High).
Though specific plot details are still under wraps, the series is described as "a comedic journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an eleven-year-old history nerd."

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

From Rocky Balboa fights to cornfield baseball games, virtually every mainstream sport has received a few moments in the Hollywood spotlight. But it’s hard to think of a sport more intrinsically intertwined with cinema than bodybuilding. Football fans might enjoy watching “Remember the Titans” on an offseason afternoon, but cinematic recreations are unlikely to scratch the same itch as live games on an NFL Sunday. Bodybuilding, on the other hand, has enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with Hollywood ever since a certain Austrian named Arnold Schwarzenegger set foot in California. For the past half century, documentaries about the sport have often drawn more mainstream attention than any live broadcast of an actual competition.
In many fans’ eyes, the sport of bodybuilding first gained mainstream legitimacy with the release of “Pumping Iron,” George Butler and Robert Fiore’s landmark 1977 documentary about Schwarzenegger’s preparations for the Mr. Olympia competition. In addition...

The cast of Friends used collective bargaining to level out their salaries. As an ensemble cast, they wanted to be treated as equals as their wages grew from $22K per episode to $1M. Each cast member of Friends earned around $90 million in base salary alone from the show before the addition of any backend bonuses and ongoing royalties from syndication, racking each actor up an impressive net worth. For 10 seasons, the Friends cast was considered the gold standard of sitcom television, but where do they stand financially today? Here is the net worth of the Friends cast ranked from richest to poorest.

AT&T and Tribeca have chosen “Color Book” as the winner of the 2023 AT&T Presents: Untold Stories event. Writer/director David Fortune and producer Kiah Clingman competed amongst four other finalists to win $1 million and receive year-round mentorship to produce their feature film.
The film concerns a devoted father learning to raise his son — who has Down Syndrome — following the passing of the family matriarch. While adjusting to their new reality, the duo embark on a journey through Metro Atlanta to attend their first baseball game. The Atlanta-set picture is like Fortune’s prior films in that it finds power in normalizing the themes of compassion and intimacy set in inner-city communities.

Lisa Kudrow and long-time producing partner Dan Bucatinsky reenacted a classic scene from the second season of The Comeback after the actors noticed they were in a trailer similar to the one they worked on in the HBO comedy.
“I’m in a trailer with…,” Kudrow says in a video she shared on Instagram before panning over to a happy Bucatinsky waving at the camera.
Kudrow added, “Dan just realized this trailer is the same exact configuration from… this scene.”
Bucatinsky said that “it might be even the same trailer” used in the mockumentary before reenacting the scene.
The scene was when Bucatinsky’s Billy Stanton comes into Valerie’s trailer fuming because she’s about to drop him. Before Valerie could say a word, he decides to quit, throws his phone and stormed off.
Watch the funny moment in the video below.

Are you as into “The Masked Singer” as we are? As much as we love watching the over-the-top performances on “The Masked Singer,” we get even more enjoyment from figuring out the names of the celebrities competing. That is especially true if we can crack the code as to who is hiding inside a costume before the four judges.
Season 9 of “The Masked Singer” is proving to be the most competitive yet. The producers packed the line-up with 22 stars. The lone woman who contended in Week 4 was disguised as Squirrel and she wowed the crowd with her cover of the Pink tune “Try.”
We’ve been reviewing the clues and that performance on March 8 and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Squirrel”?
We think that Squirrel is Malin Akerman, the multi-hyphenate talent who is an actress, singer, songwriter and model. Don...

Not many original Warner Brothers’ IPs are quite as unique as ‘The Animaniacs’. Originally airing from 1993 to 1998, it followed the mischievous antics of three siblings (and various side characters) as they caused various disturbances around the Warner movie lot. These antics take the form of a variety sketch show, with episodes containing three different segments that often careen into each other. But that’s not the only thing that made this show unique. It was ahead of its time in many ways. The series often indulged in meta humor, leading to pranks and parodies on actors, movies, and Warner Brothers itself. The innovative sitcom left a sizable hole in its place after it went off the air. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. First things first: This show has the wrong title. It should really be called Revival, not Reboot, since the titular TV show is bringing back its original cast in a continuation of the original series. Ok, now that we’ve gotten that nitpick out of the way… Reboot is actually really good! The new Hulu sitcom that parodies sitcoms — debuting Tuesday, Sept. 20; I’ve seen the first four episodes — is one of the year’s funniest new comedies, gleefully skewering the television industry with razor-sharp barbs that approach the lofty heights of The Comeback and BoJack Horseman. “Abbott Elementary” obviously shares some DNA with “The Office” — between their mockumentary formats, a mutual director in Randall Einhorn, and Tyler James Williams serving the best camera stares since John Krasinski — so perhaps it makes sense that “Abbott” will have to pull off a feat that was last accomplished by “The Office” to win the Best Comedy Series Emmy.
The ABC sitcom scored seven nominations for its breakout first season: comedy series, actress (Quinta Brunson), supporting actor (Williams), double supporting actress (Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph), writing (Brunson) and casting. But it was Awol in one key category: directing. “Abbott” — which submitted two episodes in directing, including the pilot helmed by Einhorn — missed out to “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “Hacks,” “The Ms. Pat Show” (the required multicam nominee), “Ted Lasso” and two episodes of “Only Murders in the Building.” “The Office” was the last show to win Best Comedy Series without a directing nomination,...

Valerie Cherish won’t be making a comeback anytime soon.
Lisa Kudrow revealed during a recent Daily Beast interview that despite fan hopes and internal conversations with series co-creator Michael Patrick King, the HBO cult favorite “The Comeback” is unlikely to get a Season 3.

“Friends” may have countless superfans around the world – but Lisa Kudrow’s son isn’t necessarily one of them. In fact, according to Kudrow, her son’s first reaction to the show was actually pretty “demeaning.”
To be clear, it’s not that he didn’t like the NBC sitcom, it’s just that his mom wasn’t exactly his favorite part of it. During an interview with Seth Meyers in support of “Who Do You Think You Are?”, which she executive produces, Kudrow explained that her son first watched “Friends” when all his own friends began watching it in school.
According to the actress, her son was a bit surprised by the humor in it – but favored his mother’s male co-stars.
“He was impressed. He goes, ‘It’s actually really funny,'” Kudrow said with a laugh. “He said, ‘It’s actually really funny, and I mean, the guys are so funny.

Television, this spring, has been full of stories of real-life people struggling against the petty matters of their respective realities and reinventing themselves as heroic figures. On “The Dropout,” Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) pushed past the limits of science to declare herself a genius, no matter how unrealistic her putative accomplishments; on “Inventing Anna,” Anna Delvey (Julia Garner) made herself into a wealthy woman of leisure, despite having neither wealth nor, in her endless gyrating calculations, leisure time. And on “WeCrashed,” Rebekah Neumann (Anne Hathaway)…

By his telling, Zac Brown has always been hustling. Even before his musical ambitions came to light, he was a grade-school sugar peddler.
“I was the kid in school that was selling candy out of my backpack,” Brown says. “I was slinging Blow Pops and Jolly Ranchers.”
The Georgia native eventually graduated from sweets to songs but retained his work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He’d go to a local sports bar, propose a recurring gig where he got to keep the door money, and play for hours. This D.

The company’s Chinese New Year movie tradition is now into its fifth edition. Apple’s 2021 film “Nian” was shot by “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang.
“The Comeback,” which weighs in at 23 minutes (watch above or on YouTube), is a multi-genre movie about making a movie. It mixes up Hollywood sci-fi, traditional Kung Fu action and nostalgic feel-good comedy. Apple says it is “set to inspire and encourage everyone to never stop believing in their dreams — even if that dream is as far away as Mars.”

Rhonda Stubbins White, best known for performances on Tyler Perry’s BET drama series Ruthless and, to daytime viewers, her recurring role in 2000 on NBC’s Days of Our Lives, died Monday of cancer in Los Angeles. She was 60.
Her death was announced by a friend, Todd Baker, on White’s official Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my dear friend Rhonda Stubbins White,” Baker writes. “She was an amazingly talented woman, full of positivity and energy, and grounded by her faith. We were all fortunate to have known her and shared her short time on this earth.”
Born in Brooklyn, White attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the 1980s before relocating to Los Angeles. By the early- to mid-1990s she was booking roles on such series as Here and Now, starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner and S. Epatha Merkerson,...

As it has done in the past for films directed by women or non-English language films, BBC Culture has released its list of the 100 greatest TV series of the 21st century. The list is the result of a poll of 206 critics, academics and industry professionals from across the world, making it the biggest and most international survey of experts on the subject. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the number one series was deemed to be David Simon and Ed Burns’ “The Wire,” with almost a quarter of those polled ranking it in first place as the single greatest TV show of the 21st century so far, and nearly half listing it somewhere in their top 10.
IndieWire readers will be familiar with most of the titles in the Top 10. “Fleabag” came in at No. 4, making it the top-rated series created by a woman. It wasn’t the sole entry to have that distinction; “I May Destroy You...

Zac Brown Band combine a message of living in the moment with a sense of humor and deft bluegrass picking in the new song “Fun Having Fun,” off the group’s upcoming album The Comeback.
Set to a speedy tempo and propelled by choppy mandolin, Brown and his mates recount instances of finding trouble that would get most kids grounded for life. “Well I had a big old pair for a boy just 8 years old,” he sings, before recalling how he wrecked his grandad’s prized Ford truck, burned down a hayloft,...
