Kerry Washington in Ray; on the red carpet Kerry Washington has never been busier. The young actress is best known for her work in such diverse films as Ray, Lift and The Last King of Scotland. Reviews were terrific for her work in Mother and Child earlier this year, and she recently wrapped on the Broadway production of David Mamet's Race while already shooting Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls, opening on November 5. Also coming out in the next month is the Black Panther drama, Night Catches Us. Washington sat down with us to discuss her work in For Colored Girls and her gratitude to Perry for casting her in what she regards as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She also spoke with great emotion about being able to work alongside the film's amazing ensemble of talented African-American actresses, all of whom seemed to recognize they were working on a very special project.

I haven't heard an awful lot about "Night Catches Us," but researching it for this post has landed it squarely in the center of my radar. Writer/director Tanya Hamilton will bring this, her first feature, to Sundance next week. The movie stars Kerry Washington, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Hector and Wendell Pierce, who played Bunk on "The Wire." The movie will also feature a soundtrack from Philadelphia-based hip-hop outfit (and Jimmy Fallon house band) The Roots. Do you really need to know anymore?
Here's the synopsis, as detailed on the movie's website: Marcus (Anthony Mackie, “The Hurt Locker,” “Brother to Brother”) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age during the Black Power movement, protecting a dangerous secret in a struggle against the revolution he once embraced and rediscovering a forbidden love (Kerry Washington, “Ray,” “Lift”). Sounds like a winner to me. Can't wait. For now, enjoy this exclusive still.

The lush and iridescent forests of "Avatar," the sooty Victorian London of "Sherlock Holmes" and even the trashed, morning-after Vegas suites of "The Hangover" all caught the collective eye of the Art Directors Guild, which announced its nominations Friday.
The Adg, which will hold its 14th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards on Feb. 13 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, unveiled noms in nine categories, covering movies, TV, commercials and music videos.
In the category of fantasy film, "Avatar" will do battle with two other sci-fi titles -- "District 9" and "Star Trek" -- as well as the book adaptations "Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince" and "Where the Wild Things Are."
The nominees for period film range from "Sherlock Holmes," set in the 19th century, to the Depression-era America of "Public Enemies" to the World War II France of "Inglourious Basterds" as well as the post-war France of "Julie & Julia" and...
