Polish-born filmmaker Filip Jan Rymsza, the producer of Venice Film Festival entry “Hopper/Welles,” which he is presenting this week at Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival, will follow his latest directorial outing “Mosquito State” – also a Venice premiere this year – with “Object Permanence,” Rymsza tells Variety. Partially set in Berlin and shot in English, it will be another Polish co-production, most likely with Germany.
“’Object permanence’ is something that people were aware of already, they just didn’t know how to define it: It’s the understanding that objects continue to exist even if you can’t see them or hear them, or otherwise sense them,” he says, adding that while “Mosquito State” looked at the recent past, this will look into the near future.
With another project, set in Japan, currently put on hold due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, Rymsza will once again try to focus on one protagonist.

You wait the best part of 30 years for one and then two come along at once…Orson Welles movies.
Pieced together from the 1,083 reels of footage for The Other Side Of The Wind (which debuted in 2018), Hopper/Welles is the latest ‘new’ feature from the industry titan, who died in 1985.
Ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, we spoke to producer Filip Jan Rymsza about the backstory behind the movie, on which he re-teamed with The Other Side Of The Wind editor Bob Murawski (The Hurt Locker).
The intimate and revelatory documentary captures a 1970 meeting between the Citizen Kane director and the then-rising star Dennis Hopper, who had just made Easy Rider. The encounter came about when Hopper agreed to a cameo role in Welles’ troubled The Other Side Of The Wind. Welles flew Hopper from New Mexico to Los Angeles, where he cooked him a pasta...

Screen Queensland, the Queensland state’s film support body, has struck a deal with Canada’s Wattpad to develop stories. Wattpad uses global audience insights and machine learning to find and develop hit projects for screens.
Screen Queensland and Wattpad will select up to three successful stories from the Wattpad platform and ask Queensland screen industry creatives to submit their ‘take’. Writers will provide a pitch outlining how they plan to translate the story to screen. The winning three may then move into further development with the input and feedback of the Wattpad platform audience over the following 12 months. The intention is to identify a project to secure marketplace backing and achieve production in Queensland.
Wattpad currently works with companies like Sony Pictures Television, eOne, Erik Feig’s Picturestart, Bavaria Fiction, Mediaset, Lagardere Studios, Wise Entertainment and Turner LatAm’s Particular Crowd. The company has nearly 50 projects in development, including...

Dennis Hopper was a legend. His tumultuous career — replete with soaring highs and harrowing lows — was matched only by his turbulent and unruly personal life. The director behind the prototype for American independent cinema, the classic “Easy Rider,” Hopper’s career began alongside that of James Dean, whom he shared the screen with twice, before bottoming out with his ambitious disaster “The Last Movie” when he was blackballed by the industry for his indignance and difficult attitude.

If you heard there was a documentary about a filmmaker as told by his assistant, you would have every right to think that it was going to be some salacious garbage. Luckily, that’s not what they’re presenting in the upcoming documentary “Along for the Ride,” which focuses on the life and career of Dennis Hopper, as told by his “right-hand man” Satya de la Manitou.

An official trailer has arrived for a documentary titled Along for the Ride, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year. Along for the Ride profiles the life and career of actor Dennis Hopper, who you will recognize from all kinds of different movies over the years. Hopper passed away in 2010, but earned two Oscar nominations over his long career. "Method actor, filmmaker, photographer, fine artist, art collector, and all-American madman." The doc includes a score by Gemma Thompson of the critically acclaimed band Savages, along with plenty of interviews with his friends and colleagues including Wim Wenders, Dwight Yoakam, David Lynch, Michael Madsen, Dean Stockwell, and many others. "Through the triumph of Easy Rider, the magnificent career suicide of The Last Movie, the overlooked masterpiece Out of the Blue, and a midlife comeback after plenty of booze and brawling, Along for the Ride is a vivacious work of...

In an era of shocking TV endings, few shows had a more audacious ending than the first season of the TBS comedy “Search Party.” If this first look at Season 2 is any indication, those final moments are going to reverberate through a few more episodes.
We see Dory (Alia Shawkat), still dealing with the traumatic events of that finale. Now that the mystery of Chantal Witherbottom is pretty much solved, Dory will have to lead the gang away from any bigger kind of trouble. Along for the ride: well-intentioned Drew (John Reynolds), self-obsessed Elliott (John Early), and the ambling Portia (Meredith Hagner). Everyone they meet seems really interested in that dead body in the woods.

The Season 2 cast also includes James Young, Catherine Burns, J. Smith Cameron, Brandon Micheal Hall, Christine Ebersole, and Jennifer Kim.

The Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren, was the first Marvel superhero movie. It's not as bad as you've heard...
1989's The Punisher is Marvel's first superhero movie.
When you see it written out this way, it is really weird, isn't it? But it's true. The Punisher, the 1989 movie starring Dolph Lundgren as Marvel's premiere vigilante, really is the first Marvel superhero movie. While other Marvel superheroes (most notably Hulk and Spider-Man) had shown up in TV movies and series, they weren't big screen concerns. The 1944 Captain America movie serial doesn't count, because it's a serial not a feature film. The 1986 Howard the Duck movie is technically the first Marvel film, but he isn't a superhero. None of 'em tick all the appropriate boxes. The Punisher, for better or worse, does.

Adapting anime and manga properties is no easy feat. Not only do you have to overcome adapting a project from a different medium, but you also have to adapt it from an entirely different culture. Something that makes sense to a Japanese person may come across as stupid and illogical to an American viewer, and that’s not even taking into account the cultural mythology that a lot of anime pulls from. As such, the studios need to be picky about what they decide to bring over. What can they adapt that is both popular and not so reliant on knowing Japanese culture?

Need a break from 9-5 monotony? Mayhem is one wonderfully violent “fuck you” to corporate culture, satirical in its ability to bastardize desk-jockey soullessness. We spend hours upon hours working for bosses who benefit the most, but how long can power gaps linger before tensions boil over? Director Joe Lynch accelerates this process with an injected viral string, uninhibited colleagues and a quarantined Thunderdome, all in the name of pencil-snapping stress relief. When systems break down, it’s time for the underlings to rise – golden parachutes aren’t saving anyone.
Steven Yeun stars as Derek Cho, a driven employee of Towers & Smythe Consulting. The dialogue is clunky, the A-list actors are slumming and, yeah, you've seen it all before. But Kong: Skull Island is a creature feature that's damn near irresistible. Set in 1973, just when the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam, this loony epic boasts a killer soundtrack and a thing for the surreal kick of Apocalypse Now. This return of the King is the second entry in what eventually be a new cinematic Giant Monster-verse (following 2014's bland Godzilla reboot), and it's a rip-roaring rumble in the jungle.

While perhaps not something many want to consider a truly brilliant film, Bad Santa was undeniably funny, and had more going for it than you’d be able to predict.
The franchise returns on November 23rd with Bad Santa 2, and while sequels are always problematic, this one looks to have the makings of a hilarious anti-adventure film.
A new Red Band trailer hit a few days ago, which… introduced Christina Hendricks in spectacular fashion, and now the film has a Green Band version to try to continue growing your enthusiasm for this crazy effort.
There’s a new job to pull off, this time ripping off a charity, and if Willie (Billy Bob Thornton) didn’t have enough problems with that, sort of, he also has to deal with his mother (Kathy Bates) as the mastermind of the score.
Take a look, and let us know if you’re looking forward to this one.
