Syriana and Gold director Stephen Gaghan has been hired to write and direct Ubisoft's big screen adaptation of their hit video game The Division. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain have already been set to star in the film.
Gaghan, who started his career as a writer, has worked on projects such as Rules of Engagement, Traffic, The Alamo, Havoc, and the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts. He's worked on a lot of great stuff, so I think we can expect a solid Division movie from him. He made the following statement to Variety:
"I’m excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Pictures and collaborate with their team at Massive Entertainment to bring The Division to the big screen. They’re great guys, exceptionally creative, and willing to take risks. The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape they created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan.

Mary Shelley can rest easy in her grave now that Fox’s upcoming series Second Chance (premiering Wednesday at 9/8c) has dropped its original moniker, The Frankenstein Code.
VideosSecond Chance Trailer: New Fox Drama Sends Resurrected Cop on a Rampage
“Using a name like that just for brand recognition — when [the show] has almost nothing to do with Mary Shelley whatsoever — is disingenuous, and it’s a disservice to Mary Shelley,” star Rob Kazinsky says.

Rob Kazinsky has certainly come a long way since his days on the much parodied, long-running UK soap opera, EastEnders. After several years spent playing supporting characters in notable projects, such as True Blood, Pacific Rim and Hot Pursuit, he has finally landed his first leading role – in a brand new sci-fi/drama series for Fox, titled Second Chance.
The premise of the show is something of a mixture of classic sci-fi themes, police procedurals, and family drama. The elderly Jimmy Pritchard is a retired, disgraced La county sheriff, renowned for corruption. Despised by his family, he is murdered during a break-in at the home of his son – but two “tech billionaires” resurrect him as one of their science projects. They find that, in returning, he is much younger and has strength and stamina five times greater than that of the average adult male. This realization leads to the idea...

Charles Darwin doesn.t seem like he would be the prime candidate to spotlight an adventure movie, but, then again, Abraham Lincoln didn.t seem like a vampire hunter. The scientist famous for developing the theory of evolution is said to be the face of a new movie that Disney is close to snagging that will send the famed scientist on a whirlwind trip. Deadline was first to report the news of the new Darwin adventure flick . a phrase I.d never thought I.d be writing . and details are extremely limited - including the title of the project. However, we do know that Stephen Gaghan, the mind behind the screenplays for Traffic, Syriana, The Alamo and Rules of Engagement, penned the script that caught the eye of the Mouse House. As the trade notes, Darwin took a nod from Indiana Jones in exploring and answers questions about the world.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

With the 2014-2015 television season winding down, many television fans and channels are looking ahead to the new series that will make their debut over the next television season. Fox is no different, having announced their renewals, cancellations, and new series pickups over the last week, and the network has now released trailers for a number of their new series.
First up is the trailer for the new animated series Bordertown.
From Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann comes Bordertown, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. – Mexico border. The series takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. Set against this increasingly diverse backdrop, the comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink. Bordertown centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes.

The following is an excerpt from "Film Craft: Screenwriting,"edited by Tim Grierson. The book is now available from Focal Press. The excerpt below was made available by the book's publisher. Stephen Gaghan’s writing career started quite promisingly, publishing a short story in The Iowa Review before he was even 26. He also impressed the writing staff of "The Simpsons" with a spec episode entitled “Family Wheel of Jeopardy,” as well as producer and talent agent Bernie Brillstein with a collection of "Saturday Night Live" sketches he’d written. But a career in television writing in the 1990s— including stints at "New York Undercover," "The Practice," "American Gothic," and "NYPD Blue" (where he shared an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series)—soon gave way to screenwriting. His first produced film credit was "Rules of Engagement" (2000), which starred Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, but he received much acclaim for his next film,...

We scoured the ballots to dig up the notable omissions (if you were hoping for an Arya Stark nomination, better luck next year) and surprising inclusions (go get your directing nomination, Jennifer Love Hewitt!).
Where's "Bunheads"?
Every ABC Family original series (including "The Lying Game," "Baby Daddy" and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager") is submitted for consideration as either Outstanding Comedy or Outstanding Drama except for the network's most outstanding show: "Bunheads." Huh?
Star Sutton Foster submitted herself in the Comedy Actress category, but "Bunheads" is otherwise Mia from the ballots (even in technical categories like casting, main title design and costume design).
Other shows completely out of contention are more understandable, though Starz's canceled "Boss" earned enough...

There was a time when the name Nicolas Cage conjured notions of respectability and Oscar wins. How the mighty have fallen. He’s now a byword for bad big-budget films like the remake of The Wicker Man or the confusing Season of the Witch. But there might be some sun among the clouds of Nicolas Cage’s career.
The Playlist reports that William Friedkin has potentially been attached to Cage’s latest thriller I Am Wrath. The film purports to be the tale of a man whose wife is murdered, driving him to seek vengeance against corrupt cops and nasty killers. Pretty much par for the course for a Nicolas Cage vehicle.
The film comes hot on the heels of Cage vehicles Trespass, Justice, Stolen and other single-word titles that conjure images of a good guy forced to go bad to get, y’know, justice and stuff.

The filmography of celebrated director William Friedkin is a colorful one indeed. First-year film buffs will, of course, point to classics like The French Connection (1971) and The Exorcist (1973), while the more seasoned of the celluloid-obsessed will rattle off titles like Sorcerer (1971), Cruising (1980), To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), Blue Chips (1994), Rules of Engagement (2000), and Bug (2006) -- and the hardcore completists will also cite The Boys in the Band (1970), The Brink's Job (1978), Rampage (1987), and The Hunted (2003). Hell, I even saw the guy's 1990 arbor-related horror flick The Guardian! Stephen Gaghan isn’t exactly a household name, but he’s a creative type whose work you’re likely familiar with. Not only does he have a hefty screenwriting résumé that includes titles like Rules of Engagement and Traffic, but he was also the writer/director of the George Clooney vehicle, Syriana. Why is this all important? Because The Wrap has news about what his next project is going to be, and it sounds pretty interesting. The film, which is being produced through Lionsgate, is called Candy Shop, and it’s said to be something of a crime thriller. The story’s protagonist is a deep cover operative dedicated to fighting an evil global organization who ends up losing everything and having to give up the life. Retirement doesn’t prove to come too easy though, because soon after he disappears into Brooklyn to live out the rest of his days as a fairly anonymous beat cop...

During the SXSW Film Festival (check out all of our coverage here) there was quite some buzz surrounding Killer Joe, the Southern thriller from director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, French Connection) because of a certain scene involving some violence and fried chicken (the first poster took advantage of that fact). The story follows a young man (Emile Hirsch) in danger who turns to a shady hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance. Now we have the first trailer for the film which has landed itself a rare Nc-17 rating (it won't be edited for an R-rating). Watch! Here's the first trailer for William Friedkin's Killer Joe found by The Playlist: Killer Joe is directed by Oscar-winning director, William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection, Rules of Engagement, Bug) with a script by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright, Tracy Letts,...

Born in Cambridgeshire, UK, and raised in Australia, Guy Pearce began his career in Aussie soaps Neighbours and Home And Away before a turn in The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert brought him to wider attention.
Since then he has been in such films as L.A. Confidential, Rules of Engagement, Memento, The Hurt Locker and The King's Speech.
We'll next be seeing Guy in the new sci-fi action flick Lockout, released in UK cinemas on April 20, 2012. Less than a couple of months later (June 1 to be exact) he will be in space again in Ridley Scott's Alien prequel/spin-off Prometheus.
A new trailer for Lockout has been released and is included below, while Pearce is gunning for action in an official still included above.

Tommy Lee Jones has built a career in part on playing stern military leaders and lawmen, and now, he'll play one of the most famous generals in American history.
Jones has signed on to play Gen. Douglas MacArthur in "Emperor," the Japan-set post-World War II drama that already stars Matthew Fox.
"Tommy will bring strength, intelligence and gravitas to the portrayal of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, a legendary American hero," producer Gary Foster said in a statement.
The role will be Jones' second recent turn as a World War II general; he played the fictional Colonel Chester Phillips in last summer's "Captain America." He played Col. Hayes Hodges in 2000's "Rules of Engagement," and even gave voice to a military man in the animated film, "Small Soldiers."
In addition, Jones played a sheriff in "No Country for Old Men" and Chief Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard in "Us Marshals."

The increasingly baffling auteur M. Night Shyamalan has spent the last year quietly working on his next movie, the sci-fi apocalyptic blockbuster One Thousand A.E., whilst he awaits his long set lead Will Smith’s schedule to free up. Smith has spent the year shooting Men in Black 3 but as that project is now coming to a close, Shyamalan will be hoping that Smith’s interest is still strong and that they can get moving on the Sony Pictures tentpole that is due to start filming in February. If for no other reason, Shayamalan needs the box office boost the biggest film star on the planet can give him!
One Thousand A.E. is based around a father and son who land on Earth 1,000 years after it has been abandoned by mankind. We don’t know the plot convictions for how/why this has happened just yet but we do know...

Memories of director William Friedkin's former glories, specifically The Exorcist (1973) and The French Connection (1971), have made sitting through past tripe like Jade (1995) and Rules of Engagement (2000) palpably depressing. So it is with great pleasure that I can report that Killer Joe (2011), which premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival this week, is a genuinely good film, a dark to black comedy that shows something very wrong at the heart of a Texan family.

With direction from William Friedkin, filmmaker behind flicks like The Exorcist and French Connection, and a cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Matthew McConaughey, Juno Temple and Thomas Haden Church, the forthcoming thriller Killer Joe could be a big hit when it hits the Toronto International Film Festival later this month (stay tuned for our coverage right here). Take a gander at the various Emmy nomination ballots and you'll quickly discover something: Almost everyone puts their name in for a nomination.
It doesn't matter if the show died a quick and painless death, if it was critically derided for much of its short run, it's so obscure no one has ever heard of it, or it's an established -- and sometimes quite good -- show whose chances of being nominated are about the same as our seeing dinosaurs roaming the planet in our lifetimes.
This isn't an ego thing, surprisingly enough; the academy encourages casts and crews from all shows to submit themselves for a nomination, likely under the axiom that you've got to be in it to win it (did you hear that, Charlie Sheen?). What this all-inclusive attitude can lead to, though, is some pretty funny discoveries.
So, let's pretend that we're in the Bizarro world...

ABC has a slew of new shows coming, many of which need a lot of luck if they're going to last more than a handful of episodes. The schedule has been released, so let's take a lot at what's coming.
Oddly enough, as part of the new announcement, ABC has solidified the return of several more shows, including Happy Endings, despite the fact that two other networks have shows on their slate with cast members from the show. That should be interesting. Of course, it works for me, because I'm a fan.
In other news, Desperate Housewives will not die. Are you kidding me with this show still being on?

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

ABC hopes 13 is its lucky number. The network has picked up a baker’s dozen new shows to populate its fall and midseason schedule, which includes opening a new comedy block.
Mondays will stay the same with Dancing With the Stars and Castle. Tuesdays will open with a comedy hour that includes Tim Allen’s new sitcom, Last Man Standing, paired with another new comedy, Man Up. Wednesdays adds new comedy Suburgatory, plus soap thriller, Revenge, at 10 p.m., with Cougar Town shifting to midseason and Happy Endings getting the Modern Family lead-in. Charlie’s Angels will go into Thursdays at 8 p.

The 1990s saw Tommy Lee Jones suddenly become one of the more unlikely A-listers out there. His Oscar-winning antagonist in "The Fugitive" placed the actor firmly in demand in big budget projects such as "Men in Black," "Volcano" and "Batman Forever," as well as a series of not-particularly good procedural programmers like "Double Jeopardy," "Rules of Engagement" and "The Hunted." But the humiliation of 2005's cheerleader comedy "Man of the House," which would be a nadir of anyone's career, let alone someone with fine work stretching back 40-odd years, seemed to change things. But 2005 also saw the actor's storming…...

The Event returned to NBC last night after three months in dry dock. Plotwise, the show is still a bit of a muddle. The aliens’ motivations are still impenetrably vague — we know where they’re from now, but precisely what they want is still a mystery. (At one point, someone actually said, “I will answer all the questions that you have. But First…” Argh, my brain!) Sean and Leila are still on a neverending road trip across America, in search of … something. It’s all a bit wearisome, but The Event is still worth watching, just because the cast is so talented.

Chicago – “Dinner For Schmucks” proves that casting does not make a comedy. Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are easily two of the funniest people alive. They have perfect comic timing. Although you’d never know it from watching them go through the unfunny motions in this lackluster effort.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
It’s mostly not their fault. No, that can be clearly placed at the feet of director Jay Roach and writers David Guion & Michael Handelman. The scribes crafted an unfunny slice of cruelty masquerading as black comedy and the director shot it all with all the energy of an episode of “Rules of Engagement.” Instead of crafting a piece that uses everyone’s strengths together, Rudd’s everyman realism, Carell’s nearly-Vaudevillian performance, and Roach’s pedestrian direction never come together into one dish that you’d want to eat.

Why should you buy this? Because it’s without a doubt the best new TV show from last season. The show does take about three or so episodes to really hit its stride, but take the time necessary. Last week was really just a tease when it came to season premieres. Starting tonight, it's the real deal. If you're not lucky enough to have a DVR which programs more than a few shows at a time, you have some serious and difficult decisions ahead of you.

While we root for Florky (Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas) on Dancing with the Stars, we plan to Tivo a few new series. Premiering tonight on Fox is their modern-day take on Dallas called Lone Star, about a dude who has a wife and a girlfriend and is swindling all of them.
NBC is offering up Jerry Bruckheimer's new show, Chase, and while we're not typically police drama fans, it's Bruckheimer so it seems worth a viewing. And for all the retro cop fans out there, the re-imaging of Hawaii Five-o hits the air...
