Gemeinsam...

U.S. producer Stacey Sher — whose credits include Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight” as well as Steven Soderbergh’s “Erin Brockovich,” “Out of Sight” and “Contagion” — will be honored by the Locarno Film Festival with its Raimondo Rezzonico Prize, which celebrates a producer who epitomizes the indie ethos.
“Few producers can claim that their films not only drastically altered the landscape of American independent filmmaking, but also seemed to define the tenor of an entire decade,” the prominent Swiss fest dedicated to international indie cinema said in a statement. It noted that Sher – with her producing partners Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg – shepherded “such paradigmatic films of the 1990s” as “Pulp Fiction” (1994); “Get Shorty” (1995); “Matilda” (1996); “Gattaca” (1997); and “Out of Sight” (1998).

The 1990s was a great time for sci-fi movies, but for every great and popular flick, there were a few underrated ones. The ones that may have had intriguing ideas, a talented director, but were left without a budget, or were simply released at the wrong time.
Here are nine movies, including sci-fi classics and hidden gems, that are sure to leave you thinking.
1. The Thirteenth Floor, 1999
The Thirteenth Floor is one of the unsung masterpieces that had bad luck with its release date — around the same time as The Matrix. The plot is a complex multi-level detective story about a simulation in cyberspace.
The creator of the perfect VR system, Hannon Fuller, is murdered in his own office. All evidence points to his co-worker Douglas Hall. To find the killer and clear his reputation, Hall dives into virtual reality — a simulated Los Angeles of 1937, whose inhabitants are unaware of the artificiality of their origins.

We can't say that we live in a boring world today. And when we say boring, what we really mean is the one where nothing happens. Every day we hear about different incidents, both man-made and natural, that make us wonder what the future will bring. But we still secretly wish we would never find out.
However, when a show or movie gives us the chance to see what the world would be like if something extraordinary happened, we never miss the opportunity to take it in. That's why the dystopian genre is so popular – because it gives answers to questions that no one is allowed to ask out loud.
And here we have the list of the 5 best dystopian dramas as voted by Redditors.
1. Cloud Atlas (2012)
Cloud Atlas is a movie that makes your brain work like crazy and frankly it seems like that’s something not every viewer is ready to experience.

Laura Harrier is ready to go to war with Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård for the Andrew Niccol-directed sequel Lords of War. Harrier will star opposite Cage and Skarsgård for a follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2005 thriller, Lord of War.
Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.” The details of Harrier’s role remain a mystery.
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the...

Plot: Anna and Ryan have found true love. It’s been proven by a controversial new technology. There’s just one problem: Anna still isn’t sure. Then she takes a position at a love testing institute and meets Amir.
Review: Science fiction, as a genre, is often associated with space battles, aliens, and other action-oriented elements. Sometimes, as in the films Her and Gattaca, sci-fi can be dramatic and take a slight twist on the very near future. Fingernails follows that tradition by presenting a contemporary world almost the same as our own but with one main difference: a process where a couple can be tested to confirm that they are compatible and truly in love. It is with that conceit that filmmaker Christos Nikou looks at two people, Anna and Amir, who have tested positive with others but find themselves falling in love with each other. The idea...

Maya Hawke's portrayal of Robin Buckley, the quirky Hawkins teen who befriends Steve Harrington in the third season of "Stranger Things," quickly made her a fan favorite. As it turns out, Maya's foray into the Upside Down wasn't her intro to Hollywood, though; she's been around red carpet royalty her entire life. The 25-year-old actor is the child of two major stars: Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
Thurman is best known for her roles as Mia in "Pulp Fiction" and The Bride in "Kill Bill: Volume 1" and "Kill Bill: Volume 2." Meanwhile, Ethan is known for playing Jesse in the Before trilogy and starred in the June 2022 horror film "The Black Phone." The pair met on the set of "Gattaca" in 1996 and married in 1998. They had two children, Maya and Levon Hawke, before separating in 2003 and divorcing in 2005. Ethan later married Ryan Shawhughes, and the pair went on to have two daughters,...

Every year, dozens of science-fiction films hit theaters but only a few feature enough intelligence and power to leave a mark. The best ones challenge our minds with captivating ideas and cause us to rethink the world and our place in it. Think Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," or John Carpenter's "The Thing," all drastically different tales with unique perspectives on the universe. Or, for a little more fun, hit up Spielberg's "E.T.," George Lucas' "Star Wars," or Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," then explore the darker nature of life with Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca."
The point is that science fiction caters to all crowds—even those needing a good twist. Luckily, the genre features several pictures designed to make heads explode with stunning third-hour revelations. Often, these plot...

Paramount will be shutting down Showtime Sports by the end of the year. The news comes in the wake of Showtime’s merger with Paramount+.
“It is with profound disappointment that I shared this morning’s news that the company has decided to shut down Showtime Sports at the end of this year,” president of Showtime Sports Stephen Espinoza wrote in a memo to staff on Tuesday that was obtained by TheWrap.
Espinoza emphasized that Paramount’s decision to cut the division is not “a reflection of the work we have done in recent years, nor of our long and proud history.”
“Unfortunately, in a rapidly evolving media marketplace, the company has had to make difficult choices allocating resources, resetting priorities and reshaping its content offering,” Espinoza continued. The former head went on to say that the shuttering was “entirely out of our control.”

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to proceed with While You Were Breeding, the upcoming Kristin Newman hourlong comedy series based on her memoir, Deadline has learned. Producers of the series, from Freeform Studios, will have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.
The 10-episode series had wrapped production and was headed into post-production when it paused days into the WGA strike. Newman on May 13 wrote an emotional Facebook post explaining her decision to shut down post-production.
As a result, While You Were Breeding, starring Chelsea Frei, missed its August premiere date. After a review of Freeform’s pipeline in the context of Disney’s companywide content spend trim and emphasis on curation, it was determined that the comedy no longer fit the linear network’s programming strategy, sources said.

It’s a rainy day in New York City, and Maya Hawke is telling me about her short-lived attempt to call her father ‘Ethan’ on the set of their new film, “Wildcat.” We’re escaping the downpour at a cozy neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea, and sitting across from the striking father-daughter duo is like having a front-row seat to the royal family of art-house cinema.

25 years ago, The Truman Show star Jim Carrey proved to the world that he was somehow even more than just a generational comedic talent. Combined with the Oscar-nominated screenplay of Andrew Niccol and the direction of honorary Oscar winner Peter Weir, Carrey showcased his gifted dramatic chops by way of Truman Burbank, the unknowing star of the world’s most popular reality television show. On day 10,909 of his life’s 24/7 broadcast, Truman gradually begins to recognize that there’s something off about his seemingly idyllic existence on Seahaven Island, which, unbeknownst to him, is actually the world’s largest soundstage in Burbank.
Niccol originally wrote The Truman Show before his 1997 debut as writer-director of the cult hit, Gattaca, and so he considers both pieces to be companions in a way. After all, Truman is about a man’s discovery that the world around him is fictitious, while Gattaca is about...

Alan Arkin, the legendary character actor, has died at age 89. The Arkin family confirmed his passing in a statement to People Magazine. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
Indeed, the legendary Alan Arkin had an incredible, enduring career. He first made a name for himself on stage, but here’s an interesting tidbit – he was nominated for an Oscar for his first movie role: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. He was a Tony Award winner when he was cast but had yet to make a movie. He won the role because he was raised in a Russian-Jewish household, making him the ideal choice to play the film’s comic hero. Arkin’s performance was so lauded that he became a sensation playing ethnic roles.

Acting legend Alan Arkin is dead at age 89.
The Oscar, Tony, Emmy, BAFTA, SAG, and Golden Globe winner passed away at his home.
Perhaps best known for his roles in “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, Arkin began his acting career in 1957 — and ended up with a body of work of startling range. Arkin was an early member of the Second City comedy troupe and starred on Broadway with his Tony-winning turn in 1963’s “Enter Laughing.”
His film breakout was via comedy as well: in his first major onscreen role in Norman Jewison’s 1967 Cold War caper “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” he plays the “political officer” on a Soviet submarine that runs aground on a small New England island of only 200 residents. Showtime has passed on developing a previously announced live-action episodic TV series based on writer/director Andrew Niccol's 1997 ‘dystopian’ sci-fi thriller, “Gattaca”:
‘…a future society is driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. ‘Vincent Freeman’ conceived outside the eugenics program struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of going into space…”
The film draws on concerns over reproductive technologies that facilitate eugenics, and the possible consequences of such technological developments for society. It also explores the idea of destiny and the ways in which it can and does govern lives. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world and who they are destined to be according to their genes.
The film's title is based on the letters ‘G’, ‘A’, ‘T’ and ‘C’ which stand for guanine,...

The comedy, which was first announced last year and earned a six-episode series order at the network, was to star Patinkin and Grody and follow “the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple.”

Showtime will no longer be moving forward with four shows — “Gattaca,” “Seasoned,” “Split” and “Sweetness” — TheWrap can confirm.
The decision not to move forward with “Gattaca” came down to financials, a source familiar with the matter told TheWrap. At present, Showtime is interested in investing more in IP the network owns versus leased IP.
All projects will have the opportunity to be shopped elsewhere.
Little is known about the four projects, which were in development. Alex Gansa was announced to showrun and executive produce “Gattaca,” the TV adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi movie, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon executive producing. “Seasoned” was a scripted comedy from Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody that is based on their real-life relationship. “Sweetness” came from writer, director and producer Nick Stoller and Oscar-winner Emerald Fennell and has been described as a “female-driven anthology project.” Even less is known about “Split.”

Update: Three months after the Gattaca reboot TV series was first announced comes the news that the project has been scrapped by Showtime. In addition to the Gattaca series, Showtime also axed Seasoned, a comedy inspired by the lives of real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, as well as Sweetness and Split, two projects that had been in development. Gattaca will have the opportunity to be shopped elsewhere, so it’s possible we may still see the reboot series.

Chris McCarthy continues to slim down Showtime’s content pipeline.
The premium cable network has passed on four projects: the reboot of Gattaca that would have brought Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa back to the Paramount Global outlet as well as Seasoned, the comedy inspired by the lives of married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody that had previously had a series order. Also getting the pass are two projects that had been in development — Split and Sweetness.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces Gattaca and Sweetness, plans to shop both projects.
Showtime declined to comment.
The passes come after Chris McCarthy added oversight of Showtime to his purview last year, giving him control of nearly all of Paramount Global’s linear networks including MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Network, among others. This week, Showtime programming was folded into Paramount+ in a bid to provide the streamer with the...

Showtime is not moving forward with a number of projects, including a “Gattaca” series adaptation as well as the Mandy Patinkin-led series “Seasoned.”
“Gattaca” was first reported as being in development at Showtime back in March, while “Seasoned” was ordered to series at the network in April. In addition, Showtime is also no longer moving forward on development of the projects “Split” and “Sweetness.”
All of the projects were produced by outside studios, which sources say was the reason they were scrapped. Those studios will all have the option to now shop the projects to other outlets.
This is the latest round of development cuts at Showtime and Paramount as a whole in recent months. Once Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his purview, it was reported in March that Showtime had significantly pared down its development slate. Meanwhile, it was announced earlier this week that Paramount+ was canceling and removing a number of shows,...

Showtime has scrapped a number of greenlit originals including the series remake of Gattaca from Homeland co-creators Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and Seasoned, a comedy starring real-life husband and wife Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody.
It is also not moving forward with two development projects – Sweetness and Split. Sweetness comes from Nick Stoller and Promising Young Woman Oscar winner Emerald Fennell and is a female-driven anthology project. It comes out of Stoller’s overall deal with Sony Pictures TV, which will shop elsewhere. Not much is known about Split.
The move comes after Showtime merged with Paramount+ on the streaming side and follows the cancelation of other series ahead of their debut including Three Women, which moved to Starz, and Ripley, which moved to Netflix.

As ABC continues to crunch the numbers to see if Home Economics warrants renewal, here’s a potentially encouraging sign: ABC Signature and Lionsgate, the studios behind the show, have extended the options on the primary cast beyond this week’s deadline, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The Topher Grace-led ensemble comedy is one of two series still in limbo at ABC. The other, The Rookie: Feds, does not fall under the same June 30 cast option timeline, per sources. (Here’s a rundown of the final four broadcast shows still on the bubble.)

Almost everyone has had the frustrating experience of listening to a parent try to recall the title of a film that they cannot, for the life of them, bring to mind. Oh, they’ve got some vague plot details, maybe they know that one actor from that other thing they were in, and they’ll no doubt remember some unhelpful context (“You know, I watched it when I came home from the dentist …”), but the name is a complete mystery. You’re not IMDb, and you’re not a psychic.

Given how far reality television has come in the last 25 years, it’s hard not to think about how director Peter Weir’s 1998 film The Truman Show prophesized the TV format’s commercial prosperity. Nowadays, cameras are ubiquitous and with the prevalence of social media platforms and everyone’s persistently online existence, ordinary citizens can feel like the star of their own show broadcast publicly 24/7.
The Truman Show deserves at least some credit, some might even say blame, for ushering in the addictive spectacle of watching people’s lives unfold in real-time, day after day, as a popular form of 21st century entertainment. The big difference, of course, is that most reality show and social media stars are willing participants in their recorded stories.
But in the days before “Survivor” and “Big Brother” and the entire reality genre were omnipresent, how did The Truman Show itself become a reality?

Uma Thurman feels like a perfect fit for the role of Mia in "Pulp Fiction," and Quentin Tarantino couldn't help but realize it from the very first time they met. The director instantly felt that she was the one for the part, and their meeting even mirrored one of the most popular scenes in the whole movie. In fact, several scenes between Mia and Vincent Vega, played by John Travolta, are directly mirrored by real-life encounters between Thurman and Tarantino.
The actor and filmmaker first met over a meal, which was much like Vincent and Mia's dinner at Jack Rabbit Slim's. Believe it or not, Tarantino wasn't sure she would be the right fit before they met and was reluctant to even meet with her, but luckily Thurman's agent talked him into it. Thurman was best known for films like "Mad Dog and Glory" at the time, which was met with lukewarm critical reception,...

Showtime is currently developing a live-action episodic TV series based on writer/director Andrew Niccol's 1997 ‘dystopian’ sci-fi thriller, “Gattaca”:

From Willow to Fatal Attraction, all kinds of movies are being turned into television shows on the various streaming services, and we’ve learned that “Gattaca” is next up on the menu.
THR reports that the dystopian thriller from 1997 – which received an Oscar nomination for “Best Art Direction-Set Decoration” – is being turned into a series over at Showtime.
Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa (“Homeland”) are teaming with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) on the series adaptation of the 1990s movie, THR notes in their report.
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman starred in the 1997 movie, which was “set in a not-too-distant future where eugenics is common and genetic discrimination is illegal.”
Andrew Niccol wrote and directed Gattaca, which also starred Jude Law. The film wasn’t a big success in theaters, grossing just $12.5 million against a $36 million budget.
As we recently learned, Showtime will soon be folded into Paramount+.

Now, Variety reports that Showtime will test the movie’s cultural cache as it has a series adaptation in development. Is that a good idea or another telling sign that the TV industry suffers from a dearth of original ideas? Too soon to tell there.

14 years ago, we learned that Denis Leary's Apostle production company was developing a television series based on Andrew Niccol's sci-fi drama "Gattaca." It was a vague announcement buried in a story about the conclusion of Leary's FX show "Rescue Me." There wasn't so much as a logline. All we knew was that Gil Grant, a relentlessly mainstream TV writer best known for working on "24" and "NCIS," had been placed in charge of developing this cerebral property for Apostle. Nothing ever came of it, and we all forgot it was ever a thing — until today.

A “Gattaca” TV series is in the works at Showtime, according to multiple media reports.
Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa are reportedly in talks to return to the network to reboot the 1997 flick after co-creating Showtime’s “Homeland,” which ran for for eight seasons and produced nearly 100 episodes.
Based off the Andrew Niccol-written and direct film starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, “Gattaca” centers on a dystopian near future in which society is guided by eugenics as each potential child is planned to receive the most desirable traits of their parents.
Showtime did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Although details on the series are being kept under wraps, the show will reportedly hail from Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who are best known for creating the 2011 drama “Homeland” for Showtime. Gansa is attached to co-create the series with “Dallas Buyers Club” screenwriter and Oscar nominee Craig Borten, and will showrun the series. All three executive produce the series, which comes from Sony Pictures Television.
The directorial debut of Andrew Niccol, the original “Gattaca” film focuses on a near future society where eugenics-based technology is used to ensure children receive the “best” hereditary traits from their parents. Homeland co-creators/executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa are plotting a return to Showtime with Gattaca, a series based on the 1997 movie. Details are not confirmed as deals for the project, from Sony Pictures Television, are being finalized.
Written by Gordon, Gansa and Craig Borten, the series takes place a generation after the events of the film, when science and humanity have evolved to the point where we can direct our own evolution. Genetic engineering has created a world in which parents can determine the future of their children before they are born (the Valids), which by default has created a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the color of one’s skin (the Invalids).
Set in the near future where corporations screen their employees based on their genetic makeup, the series centers on a man with a congenital heart condition who tries to assume the...

A series adaptation of “Gattaca” is in development at Showtime, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details on the series are still under wraps, but sources say that Alex Gansa is attached to serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon also executive producing. They co-created the show with Craig Borten, who also executive produces. Sony Pictures Television will produce, with Gansa and Gordon currently under an overall deal at independent studio. Sources stress that deals for the project are not yet closed.
Showtime and Sony declined to comment.
This is not the first time that a series adaptation of “Gattaca” has been attempted. In 2009, it was reported that Sony Pictures Television was developing their own police procedural version of the film, though that project ultimately did not go forward.

Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa may be heading back to Showtime.
The Sony Pictures TV-based duo is teaming with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) to develop an adaptation of the 1997 dystopian movie Gattaca for the premium cable network. Sources say the project is being eyed with a sizable commitment at the Paramount Global-backed cabler and marks the first new project to be developed since Chris McCarthy added oversight of Showtime to his purview.
Reps for Showtime and Sony TV declined to comment, as deals have yet to close.
The movie starred Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and was set in a not-too-distant future where eugenics is common and genetic discrimination is illegal. Andrew Niccol wrote and directed the movie, which was produced by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Gail Lyon produced the pic.

The late 1990s might be remembered as a pretty good time for science fiction at the movies. There were Hollywood blockbusters with origins in sci-fi literature and loaded with VFX razzle-dazzle, while at the same time smaller and/or independent productions were offering up more cerebral, complex, concept-driven ideas.
Nestled in the middle of all this, appearing in theaters at the tail end of 1998, was a film that was perhaps the tiniest of all with regards to budget and production, but at the same time one of the biggest in terms of its central premise: Pi (aka the Greek letter π), the writing and directing debut of filmmaker Darren Aronofsky that tackled numbers theory, Jewish mysticism, and the meaning of all existence, all within 80 minutes and largely confined to one main (very cramped) set and a handful of characters.

Few people in Hollywood have the same passion for their craft that Ethan Hawke does. Watching him talk about acting is just as engrossing as when he actually performs; all the more remarkable since he never phones in a performance. Just this past year, he stretched his legs as a slasher villain in "The Black Phone" and made an impression despite a swift death in "The Northman." However, even though he's never been starved for work, some of his fondest movie memories are from a 25-year-old production: "Gattaca."
For one, it's where he met his one-time wife Uma Thurman, so he has "Gattaca" to thank for his daughter, actress Maya Hawke. The movie is also home to Hawke's favorite line that he's ever delivered on screen. "Gattaca" is set in a future where eugenic genetic engineering is the way of life. Hawke plays Vincent Freeman, an "invalid" who was born naturally.
