Teller, who famously never speaks in his "Penn and Teller" performances, has a speaking role in this film. He was cast because of his resemblance to Henry Gibson (they play father and son in the film).
This film debuted on HBO a year before the theatrical release of Bull Durham (1988), a similar film about a minor-league baseball team. In an interview, Virginia Madsen said Bull Durham (1988) writer/director Ron Shelton was at the L.A. premiere of this film and sat in the same row as her. She said she saw Shelton taking notes and believed that he had copied ideas from this film for his own. Shelton has admitted that he was at the screening, but has denied Madsen's allegations.
Some interior scenes were filmed in Tampa at the Silver Ring Cafe.
William Petersen and Virginia Madsen have both said this film was one of their favorites of the films they've done.
