Universal Pictures keeps on pumping out Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies and cartoons – in fact, another Jurassic World movie will be reaching theatres in 2025, and there are two seasons of the animated series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory dropping onto the Netflix streaming service this year. But while that’s all cool to have, one dinosaur series I wish had more installments is the Carnosaur franchise, which was produced by the late, great Roger Corman. The first Carnosaur (which was inspired by a novel written by Harry Adam Knight) was released in 1993 as a mockbuster alternative to Jurassic Park, and was followed by Carnosaur 2 in 1995 and Carnosaur 3: Primal Species in 1996. Sadly, while there were two spin-offs of sorts with Raptor in 2001 and The Eden Formula in 2006, we haven’t gotten an actual Carnosaur movie in almost thirty years, and no sort-of spin-offs in almost twenty years. While I...

Lionsgate released the first trailer for Eli Roth's adaptation of Gearbox Software and 2K's Borderlands first-person-shooter video game back in February, and we now have a look at the movie's villains via a new batch of character posters (via GameFragger.com).
The banners spotlight Benjamin Byron Davis as Marcus, Gina Gershon as Moxxi, Janina Gavankar as Commander Knoxx, Olivier Richters as Krom, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, Bobby Lee as Larry, and The Crimson Lance, who will likley serve as Stormtrooper-like canon fodder.
It seems each poster contains some sort of Easter egg. We couldn't spot anything, but maybe fans of the games will have more luck.
Check out the banners below along with the recent trailer.

Warning: the following contains major spoilers for In a Violent Nature.
Most seasoned horror fans have seen their share of slashers. From massive franchises to indie gems, this particular brand of scary movie follows a final girl and her friends as they’re terrorized by a masked killer with an ax to grind. Arguably originating from classics like Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the sub genre was codified in Carol Clover’s “Her Body, Himself” which opens Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, an academic study of the genre. This landmark essay coined the term “final girl” while identifying four additional slasher components. Clover summarizes “the killer is the psychotic product of a sick family, but still recognizably human; the victim is a beautiful, sexually active woman; the location is not-home, at a Terrible Place; the weapon is something other than a gun...

To the surprise of no one, Michael Myers will surely return. However, his comeback won’t be on the big screen as the horror icon is scheduled to have his first-ever television series. This is coming off Blumhouse’s recent Halloween trilogy, which pits an older Laurie Strode against the returning monster. That franchise started well, but the quality dipped with each passing film. We all knew that Halloween Ends wasn’t truly the final outing for Michael Myers, though no one believed that Myers’s return would be on the small screen. Halloween (2018) managed to find a way to breathe new life...

There’s a subgenre in horror movies that is known as slasher, where there’s murders on every step of the way and the scream is so loud you can hear it from everywhere.
Slashers were extremely popular in the 60s and the 70s. So here we have 5 top ones for you to check out.
1. Halloween (1978)
John Carpenter’s Halloween is a must-watch if you want to start your acquaintance with slashers, because this movie is definitely the one we can call a king of the genre. In a way, Carpenter invented the premise and the movie became an immortal classic.

Michael Myers of the "Halloween" franchise is the go-to example for a faceless slasher villain. In director John Carpenter's original 1978 picture, actor Nick Castle is credited not as playing "Michael Myers" but as "The Shape" — Michael is an extension of the shadows, stretching out to kill on pure instinct before receding back into the darkness where he belongs.
In that original "Halloween," five people are murdered by the Shape:
Michael's older sister Judith (Sandy Johnson) in the movie's opening flashback.
The offscreen Christopher Hastings, who Michael kills to steal clothes after he escapes the sanitarium.
Teenager babysitter Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes), who has her throat garrotted and cut.
Bob Simms (John Michael Graham), who is dressed as a ghost for the holiday.
Lynda Van Der Klok (P.J. Soles), Bob's girlfriend who Michael ambushes by wearing his ghost costume.

Brian Levant's 1994 film version of "The Flintstones" is a classic example of how major studio blockbusters, no matter now successful, can vanish entirely from the public consciousness. "The Flintstones" is rarely regarded in 2024, often seen only as footnote in its actors' careers, or perhaps a whimsical blunder not worth remembering. Those of us alive in 1994 recall the massive advertising glut that came with "The Flintstones," as well as the toy tie-ins, the magazine covers, the Universal Studios attractions, the Williams pinball machine. "The Flintstones" was a studio tentpole writ large, boasting a beloved, decades-old IP and a dazzling cast of celebrities; John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell, and Elizabeth Taylor appeared, while the film boasted cameos from Laraine Newman, Jay Leno, and the B-52's.
Notably, "Jurassic Park" cinematographer Dean Cundey shot the film, while "Jurassic Park" Michael Lantieri similarly served as SFX supervisor. Everything was super-slick and polished nearly to death.

The Canadian slasher film In A Violent Nature was known for its reinvention of a familiar horror trope. Directed by Chris Nash, the ‘ambient horror’ film follows a killer in the rural parts of Ontario who targets a group of teens who come to spend their summer in camping in the woods. The film seems to have added a new visual language to the usual premise.
In A Violent Nature had its premiere at the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Many critics praised its unique filmmaking twist to the slasher genre. However, despite the love from critics, the film seems to have not impressed audiences as its Rotten Tomatoes audience score was reportedly lesser than the critics’ score.

The Exorcist is getting a new coat of pea soup from horror maestro Mike Flanagan.
Recent franchise revival, The Exorcist: Believer, proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of William Friedkin's original masterpiece, and while it did actually perform reasonably well at the box office, it didn't make enough of an impact for the studio to commit to continuing that particular story.
Shortly after the movie hit theaters, we learned that director David Gordon Green (The new Halloween trilogy) had decided not to helm the next instalment in the planned trilogy, The Exorcist: Deceiver, but that Blumhouse and Universal Pictures still planned to forge ahead with the follow-up.
A recent report claimed that none other than Mike Flanagan was in talks to helm the next Exorcist movie, and it's now been made official.

“The Exorcist” is headed in a new direction. Blumhouse and Morgan Creek have tapped Mike Flanagan (“The Haunting of Hill House”) to write, direct, and produce a “radical new take” on the horror franchise, and it won’t be a sequel to the critically panned “The Exorcist: Believer” from last year.
David Gordon Green was at first set on making a trilogy of films that would continue the story of the original “Exorcist” film, bringing back original star Ellen Burstyn, but those sequels are no longer in the works, and Green exited back in January. “Believer” bombed with just $137 million at the global box office after Blumhouse spent a reported $400 million to acquire the franchise’s IP rights.
The new “Exorcist” movie, for now untitled and undated, will be an all-new story but still set within the “Exorcist” universe. Trevor Macy is producing for his Intrepid Pictures, and Flanagan will produce for Red Room Pictures.

In 2007, a shy three years removed from 2004’s Alien vs. Predator, the two titans returned to pick up where they left off with Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Wes Craven's 1977 film "The Hills Have Eyes," like Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" before it, features a vanload of city folks who find themselves waylaid in a forgotten corner of the American wasteland. In Craven's film, the wasteland is not rural Texas, but the irradiated deserts of Nevada. The protagonists (Dee Wallace is among them) are beset by the brood of the sadistic Papa Jupiter (James Whitworth), including Mars (Lance Gordon), Mercury (Arthur King), and Pluto (Michael Berryman). Years ago, Jupiter moved into the hills with his wife (Cordy Clark) and raised their children to attack and cannibalize passers-through in order to survive. "The Hills Have Eyes" is raw and brutal, but possessed of a winking sense of humor that horror fans will appreciate.

Sir Christopher Lee has led a thoroughly successful career that spanned over the course of sixty years, becoming one of the most reputed personalities in the entire entertainment industry. While he has given excellent performances across multiple genres, he is best known and most critically admired for the villainous roles he brilliantly embodied in horror and thriller movies.

Batman: The Long Halloween had been adapted into two films that, albeit handled poorly by Warner Brothers, were still relatively well received by fans. It seems that there could be a third film to round out the trilogy, as DC has announced its follow-up to The Long Holloween, a 10-issue series by the writer of Daredevil: Yellow, Batman: Hush, and Batman: The Long Halloween, Jeph Loeb.
A still from Batman: The Long Halloween

This would mean that Jensen Ackles, who essays the role of Soldier Boy for Amazon’s hit R-rated superhero shoe, The Boys, can return to voice Batman.

Movie marathons are cool, but the best horror franchises ever made are just a pitch-perfect choice for them. Sequels can often disappoint enjoyers of the original films; luckily, here we have such triples that will keep you on edge till the end of the third chapter.
Here are 4 of the most well-built horror trilogies, recommended by Reddit.
1. Halloween
Original trilogy: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
First are the iconic movies primarily focusing on the bloody exploits of Michael Myers, whose relentless killings occur on the holiday of Halloween. Although the third movie has no connection with two previous ones, three of them still make a perfect choice for night-binging.
The trilogy radiates a strong and nostalgic atmosphere of not only Halloween, the darkest day of the year, but the whole decade of the 1980s.
2. The Evil Dead

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
By the year 2017, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise had already produced sequels, remakes, prequels, prequels of the remakes, a 3D sequel, and Matthew McConaughey with a cybernetic leg. But as the classic saying goes, there’s more than one way to brutally skin a live human being on a hook while they scream in pain as your grandpa watches in the corner. Now we have requels. And you can bet your face skin that the Texas Chainsaw franchise wasn’t about to miss out on those. The story of the making of this particular requel, however, involves the dawn of the Covid-19 shutdowns, fired directors and trashed footage, rumors of disastrous test screenings,...

"The First Omen" was one of the biggest movie surprises of the year. What could've easily been a cheap, lazy cash-in on IP awareness turned out to be an inventive, smart, and surprisingly disturbing horror movie that just happens to be a prequel. As Witney Seibold wrote in his /Film review: "In an age when long-in-the-tooth horror franchises like 'Halloween' and 'The Exorcist' are being tiresomely revived without a trace of creativity, it's refreshing and splendid to see a picture that is thoughtfully menacing, uniquely stylish, deathfully intense, and utterly terrifying. 'The First Omen' is a film of dank, bloody, spittle-flecked dread, made no less powerful by the foregone conclusion."
In "The First Omen," we follow a young novitiate (Nell Tiger Free) who is sent to help at an orphanage in Rome. Once there, she begins to experience terrifying visions that hint at a grand conspiracy involving unspeakable evil.

The filmmakers behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are expanding their public domain horror universe with a handful of upcoming “Poohniverse” movies, including Bambi: The Reckoning, Pinocchio: Unstrung, and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.
Variety has scored the first image from Neverland Nightmare, seen above.
The website details, “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare follows Wendy Darling as she strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from ‘the clutches of the evil Peter Pan.’ Along the way she meets Tinkerbell, who in this twisted version of the story will be seen taking heroin, convinced that it’s pixie dust.”
Scott Jeffrey will direct Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, expected Halloween 2024.
Jeffrey tells us, “I am taking inspiration from French cinema while in prep for this movie. The film will be incredibly tense. I would say it’s a mesh between Switchblade Romance and The Black Phone with our own spin on it.

It's hard to picture two directors as different as James Cameron and John Carpenter. They've worked in similar genres (sci-fi and horror), but their attitudes lie on opposite poles. Cameron, who's famously an intense director, is still in the game and always innovating to make his "Avatar" movies exactly the way he wants to.
Carpenter, meanwhile, is in his "doesn't give an f" era. He's retired (his last film was 2010's "The Ward") because he'd rather play video games and collect royalties. And who can blame him? The man changed the horror game while dropping masterpiece after masterpiece in the '80s (see our list of the best John Carpenter movies here). He's earned time to enjoy the leisurely fruits of his success.
Would you believe that Cameron and Carpenter have worked together before? In 1981, while Cameron was a special effects grunt at New World Pictures (founded by B-movie king...

In 2008, The Strangers surprised many outside the horror community. The very straightforward home invasion movie featured a couple of stars and quickly turned a big profit. However, the middling success of the 2018 sequel left many cold. Despite this, The Strangers: Chapter 1 debuts in theaters nationwide this weekend.
Years after the original movie, director Renny Harlin takes over the stalking movies, announcing a trilogy of new films. By more than doubling the existing movies in the franchise, Harlin becomes one of the de facto voices in defining the property. With the trilogy already filmed, some may ask if there’s going to be a teaser for The Strangers: Chapter 2. The answer is an unequivocal yes.

Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Set-up: Judgment Night started out as a spec script written by Kevin Jarre, whose other credits include Rambo: First Blood Part 2,...

Ministry went back to their synth-pop roots at the Cruel World festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on Saturday (May 11th), playing some songs they haven’t performed in 40 years.
On a bill featuring legendary new wave bands like Duran Duran and Blondie, frontman Al Jourgensen and company set aside their blistering brand of industrial metal for the day. Instead, they primarily culled their set from their first two albums: 1983’s With Sympathy and 1986’s Twitch.

According to Setlist.fm, three of the songs — “Work for Love,” “I’m Falling,” and “Effigy (I’m Not An)” — hadn’t been performed since 1984. Three others — “All Day,” “Over the Shoulder,” and “Just Like You,” — hadn’t been played since 1987.
For this performance, Ministry turned into a 13-piece band with backing vocals and strings provided by the “Ministrettes’ and “Ministrings,” respectively. Among the other added musicians was...

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

"Carrie" is the book that put Stephen King on the map. When King wrote it, he was struggling financially, eking out a living selling short stories and teaching high school. Then he sat down to write what was first a short story that turned into a novella that turned into a novel. The novel was "Carrie," the story of a bullied teenage girl with telekinesis. The book wasn't a blockbuster when it was published in hardcover, but by the time it hit paperback, it flew off the shelves and King was on his way to becoming one of the best-selling novelists of all time. Sure enough, Hollywood came calling. The book was published in 1974, and by 1976, Brian De Palma's dreamy film adaptation arrived in theaters, starring Sissy Spacek as poor, doomed Carrie White, a girl who is tormented by pretty much everyone, including her Bible-loving mother (played by Piper Laurie) and her classmates.

Roger Corman, the pioneering independent film producer who helped launch the careers of numerous filmmaking greats and was hailed as “The King of Cult,” died on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica. He was 98.
His daughter Catherine Corman confirmed his death in a statement to the Associated Press. “He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him,” the statement said. “When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that.’”
Corman began his filmmaking career in the 1950s, crafting a slew of low-budget features that ranged from “The Fast and the Furious” to “Swamp Women” to “Attack of the Crab Monsters.”
In 1959, Corman got into distribution with the launch of The Filmgroup, then in the 1960s tackled a number of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations including 1960’s “House of Usher.”

There are a slew of R-rated superhero films and shows in the current landscape of the genre, yet there are certain classic superheroes who can benefit from such storytelling. Batman is one such character that can do wonders with an R-rating. However, it doesn’t t make sense for any IP to change ratings in between installments, which makes what happened with the two-part animated adaptation of The Long Halloween even more frustrating.
A still from Batman: The Long Halloween
One odd feature of The Long Halloween duology is how the first film is a PG-13 film, while its sequel was given an R-rating. In an interview with Comics Beat, Producer Butch Lukic revealed why this was the case. However, while AT&T might have been okay with the arrangement, fans were rightly mad at the lackluster handling of the rating.

Ministry’s Al Jourgensen Despised His Debut Album. Forty Years Later, He’s Finally Playing the Songs
It took a conspiracy to get Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen to come around to his band’s debut album, the proudly commercial, synth-pop juggernaut With Sympathy. The vocalist has spent the past four decades separating himself from the LP, since he alleges his label at the time, Arista, and its founder, Clive Davis, pressured him into constructing a surefire Billboard hit. He has felt so embarrassed by the whole thing that he left the label and has charged fans $1,000 just for him to autograph copies of the record. Now for the first time in decades,...

Horror films have a well-deserved reputation as predictable spectacles that revolve around simple characters and use straightforward techniques to influence the viewer. The jump scare – the rapid appearance of a monster in the frame, coupled with a sudden change in the soundtrack or a deafening scream from the monster or its victim – is a main symbol of this.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.

"The Thing" is often regarded as one of John Carpenter's best movies. A chilly, gory nightmare, Carpenter's film is based on both the John W. Campbell Jr. novella "Who Goes There?" and its 1951 film adaptation "The Thing from Another World." Using jaw-dropping, stomach-churning make-up and creature effects courtesy of Rob Bottin, Carpenter's "The Thing" follows a group of men secluded at a research center in Antarctica. When an alien lifeform that can look like anyone suddenly ends up in their midst, trust becomes a serious issue. Anyone can be The Thing, after all — and that means anyone who is still human is in serious trouble. Carpenter brings his usual deft skill to the material, crafting a scary, memorable monster movie that has stood the test of time and gone on to become a classic (even though it originally flopped at the box office).
But as it turns out, Carpenter...

"The Exorcist" franchise might soon receive a new lease on life, courtesy of one of the most prolific horror filmmakers around. After last year's "The Exorcist: Believer" failed to take off either among critics or at the box office, it seemed that Universal Pictures might have to go back to the drawing board before pushing forward with their grand plans for subsequent movies about innocent kids getting possessed by malevolent demons. Those plans took even more of a hit when "Halloween" director David Gordon Green exorcised himself from the series, resulting in the sequel "The Exorcist: Deceiver" getting pushed back indefinitely as the studio searched for another filmmaker.
That search seems to be approaching the finish line, however, and fans will undoubtedly be happy with the No. 1 choice. Late last night, Deadline broke the news that Mike Flanagan is currently in talks to direct the next installment of "The Exorcist" franchise.
