Given the tight timelines and large financial investments, most superhero flicks adhere to a script. But sometimes, a unique opportunity for actors to improvise their own lines may occur during the most expensive blockbusters. Take, for example, the iconic duo of Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo, who, armed with their stellar improvisational skills, breathed unscripted life into one of our favorite scenes in The Avengers.
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man in The Avengers | Marvel Studios
Indeed, we witnessed a powerful blend of humor & camaraderie after the ‘final battle’ in the flick, not because of scripted words but rather because of the natural chemistry between these actors. Who could have forgotten the scene in Joss Whedon’s 2012 movie where, after Iron Man’s near-fatal descent, the Hulk’s spontaneous roar revived him?

It is getting down to Emmy voters’ moment of truth as we are now less than a week away from the start of Emmy nomination voting on June 13, with all ballots due to be completed by 10 p.m. Pt on Monday, June 24. Nominations will be announced on July 17. In fact, the TV Academy just sent their first warning shot to voters, urging them to “Get Ready To Vote!”
The 76th Emmy Awards airs September 15 on ABC, exactly eight months since the strike-delayed previous Primetime Emmy show in January, and it seems just like yesterday doesn’t it? I can’t swear on it, but I believe this is the first year ever to have two Primetime Emmys in the same calendar year, and certainly the first to have two so close to each other. Ariana Grande gives Penn Badgley a taste of his own You-style obsessive stalker medicine (crossed with a bit of Catwoman) in the new music video for her Eternal Sunshine track, “The Boy Is Mine.”
Directed by Christian Breslauer, the clip stars Badgley as Mayor Max Starling, an ambitious, young political hotshot who’s come up with a brilliantly stupid idea to solve the city’s rat problem — release a bunch of hungry stray cats to eat them. As a writer for “Saturday Night Live” from 2016 to 2019, Julio Torres was able to create immersive worlds — the existential melancholy of a sink; the font obsession of an “Avatar” super fan — in just a few minutes’ worth of sketch. Over time, the comedian has only acquired more space and resources to realize his singular vision. Since 2019, Torres has co-created and co-starred in the surreal sitcom “Los Espookys”; recorded the hourlong special “My Favorite Shapes”; and directed his feature debut, “Problemista,” acting opposite Tilda Swinton. With every added level of authority, Torres has assumed even greater control of the ultra-specific sensibility evident in his earliest “SNL” breakouts. Torres’ imagination yields glamorous, distinctly queer realities with the logic of a fairy tale, grounded by the bemused frustration of an author who had to traverse the American immigration system to bring his dreamy art to life.

Jay Leno’s mom jokingly took her son down a peg when he took over The Tonight Show—and slightly altered the history of the long-running franchise in the process.
In a recent interview on Dystopia Tonight with John Poveromo, Leno revealed that when he replaced Johnny Carson, he initially planned to call the program The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno. Ultimately, his mom convinced him otherwise.
The use of the word “starring” in the title would have matched the format of the franchise’s previous iterations: Tonight Starring Steve Allen, Tonight Starring Jack Paar, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
“The Tonight Show, when I started, was The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno,” the host recalled before launching into a Scottish-accented impression of his mother, Catherine.

The “Bad Boys” set mottos have changed quite a bit between the first film and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” according to Will Smith.
When asked about training for the action scenes, Smith told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” that the motto now is “safety first,” but that wasn’t the case for the original.
“That’s probably the biggest difference between ‘Bad Boys’ One and Two and ‘Bad Boys’ Four,” Smith said. “We’re very careful. Safety first. It used to be safety third. Safety third was our motto on the set for ‘Bad Boys’ one.”
Fallon followed up asking the craziest thing Smith and co-star Martin Lawrence did across the entire “Bad Boys” franchise. Lawrence reminds Smith of a specific car stunt he had to do in “Bad Boys 2.”

After Midnight might seem like an off-the-cuff show, but Taylor Tomlinson revealed the panelists get a bit of help to set them up for success.
Tomlinson participated in a Reddit Ama on Tuesday, where she fielded questions about her career as a comedian and After Midnight. One fan was curious about how much information (if any) the show’s panelists are given ahead of time in order to think about their responses.
“We have an amazing writers room full of hilarious comedians who help prep all of the panelists so they go into the show with great jokes prepared,” Tomlinson replied. “There’s still plenty of room to improvise and make jokes off-the-cuff, too though. And certain games specifically call for improv.”

Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, Michael Che and Colin Jost all have hosted the Primetime Emmys in the past 15 years, but the late-night community once again is feeling aggrieved by the TV Academy as it heads into the latest awards season.
The central issue relates to the number of nominations in the Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Variety Series categories and the difficulty with fairly judging a wide range of shows that can be very different from each other.
Insiders tell Deadline that there needs to be a change in terms of how late-night shows and variety series are judged at the Emmys. However, no one can really agree what that change is.

In 1972, Burt Sugarman came to NBC with an idea: What if, instead of going off the air when Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show ended, they aired a late-night music series, aimed at younger viewers? NBC turned him down three times, so he ended up buying time on the network himself to prove there was an audience for late night TV after The Tonight Show.
Needlesstosay, he was right. The show he created, Burt Sugarman’s The Midnight Special, went on to air on NBC Friday nights for nearly a decade, welcoming the top music acts and comedians of the time. And in short order, NBC, seeing that there was indeed an appetite for more late night TV beyond just The Tonight Show, launched a pair of new late-night entries on other nights of the week–Saturday Night Live and The Tomorrow Show (which would ultimately be replaced by Late Night With David Letterman...

If you’ve ever wondered what Jimmy Fallon does during commercial breaks on The Tonight Show, a new ad spot has an inventive take on what that might look like.
A promo for the latest collaboration between lifestyle brand Kith and golf equipment company TaylorMade sees Fallon taking his show—desk included—to Monterey, California’s Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The spot opens with Fallon behind a Tonight Show-esque desk, complete with a backdrop of New York City. After he tosses to break, a crew quickly removes the set, plus Fallon’s suit and tie, to reveal that he’s wearing his golf gear underneath. And that the show’s set is situated in the middle of the famed golf course.

Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner began working together in 1967 and formed a very close professional relationship. They had such good chemistry on The Porter Wagoner Show and in their duets that many wondered if they were having an affair. Parton denied this, but she admitted that they fought like a married couple. Wagoner was also extremely possessive over Parton. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, he didn’t allow anyone to ask her any questions.
Porter Wagoner didn’t let Dolly Parton talk during an interview
Part of the reason Wagoner hired Parton was for her image, and he wanted to make sure she kept up appearances. He was “totally protective — both of her and of her image,” said Nashville agent Dolores Smiley in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. He wouldn’t even allow her to appear on the cover of a magazine that included advertisements for clubs that served alcohol.

Jim Henson is a man who needs no introduction. He’s a household name, famous for his intricate puppets and his creative genius. Throughout the late 20th century, he captivated people worldwide with fun characters and innovations in puppetry that could only be thought up by someone as gifted and ingenious as Henson himself. He brought smiles to millions of faces, and his work has forever left an impact on the world of entertainment as a whole. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Muppets ever since childhood; I remember putting Muppet movies on VHS on repeat, and the characters have always been a joy to watch. Reflecting on the work of Jim Henson is a fitting way to honor his legacy, so I’d like to take a look back at his works in the world of puppetry and the impact they have left. Henson was a...

Talk about bad timing. Of the five nightly late-night shows, all but one are on vacation this week. Which means Jimmy Kimmel has the Trump verdict all to himself tonight.
So what’s a vacationing Late Nighter to do when the story you’ve been tracking in your nightly monologues for years now reaches its climax and your show is in repeats?
You take to social media, apparently.
Shortly after a jury found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his historic New York hush money trial, The Daily Show posted this message to X/Twitter “Justice Alito has called for upside down American flags to be flown at half mast.”
An hour later, the same account posted this:

Mark Hamill, Lynda Carter, George Takei and Sheryl Lee Ralph are among those in Hollywood who have taken to social media to share their reaction to Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his New York criminal hush money trial.
A jury found the former president, who could face four years in prison or probation, guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. Throughout the five weeks of testimony, the jury heard from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star.
Trump also became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes. Sentencing is set for July 11.
Ralph, star on Abbott Elementary, quickly took to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, writing, “Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of all 34 counts he faced. A cheer has erupted from Collect Pond Park.”

Late Night with Seth Meyers may be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, but fans hoping for a big prime time clip show like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s recent tenth anniversary special are in for a disappointment.
As he shares in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Meyers doesn’t think his show “clips well” (which is debatable), but moreover, he says he finds it “very uncomfortable” to re-watch early episodes of the when he wore a suit, delivered a fidgety standing monologue, and the show’s original set resembled what Alec Baldwin described as “a sushi restaurant in Burbank.”
When he has watched back clips from those days, Meyers says it “feels like a fever dream,” adding that all he sees is “suits, and weird hands, and tiny chairs, and a weird desk.”
“It was probably the most scared and uncomfortable I was,” he says.

First on LateNighter: Late night had a field day after the Will Smith-Chris Rock incident at the Oscars in 2022, but after a long break, Smith is set to guest next Tuesday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, reuniting with Questlove in the process.
Smith did appear on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in 2022, eight months after he slapped Rock onstage at the Academy Awards, in which he sat for an interview with Noah and discussed the slap at length, but he’s otherwise avoided late night.
The actor has a long history with Fallon, whose response to the slap was noticeably more muted than other late-night hosts. Smith guested on the host’s first-ever Tonight Show in 2014 (where he memorably performed with Fallon in “The Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing”), and returned to the program seven more times through 2021.

Quentin Tarantino is a lover of cinema first and a filmmaker second. The maverick director has often been vocal about his favorite films of all time as well as his current favorites. Tarantino has also criticized the changing landscape of the industry, echoing the sentiments of Martin Scorsese, who went on a war against the likes of Marvel and DC.
One film that Tarantino was pleasantly surprised by and loved was Tom Cruise’s action blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. A sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic, Tarantino appreciated director Joseph Kosinski’s vision and the respect he showed for the original. Though the Pulp Fiction director had a problem with Val Kilmer’s scene in the film, he mentioned that it still worked.
