Law & Order Season 23 introduced a new Da to replace Sam Waterson's Jack McCoy, but will Baxter be written out as quickly as he was written in?
The season finale was a Baxter-centric story about catching a potential assassin while he was running to retain his position as District Attorney.
The ending was meant to be a cliffhanger that made our jaws drop to the floor, as Baxter's political fate was unknown as the credits rolled.
Let's look at what happened at the end of the episode and where things will likely go from here.
Baxter Had To Choose Between His Family And His Career
Technically, the episode was about the search for the person who had shot someone else while trying to kill Baxter during a political rally. Still, it was really about politics vs. family.
Baxter's wife wanted him to drop out of the race for Manhattan Da after the assassination attempt.

Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.
Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

As of this writing, the "Law & Order" TV empire incorporates 65 seasons of television, providing 1,355 episodes in total. If you're staying in a hotel anywhere in the world, you can probably turn on your TV and flip only three channels in either direction before you'll come upon a "Law & Order" rerun. It is ubiquitous and eternal, and it has become the ultimate "comfort watch" for a populace hungry for, well, law and order.
While "Law & Order" may feature multiple beloved characters who will stay on their respective shows for many years, they tend to rotate out when a given actor wishes to retire. The shows rarely suffer from multiple, frequent cast changes, however, and they're able to keep telling interesting stories without the benefit of a particular character's point of view. Each character might bring a gruff je ne sais quoi to the series, but after airing for decades,...

"The City on the Edge of Forever" is often considered the best episode of the series. In it, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) encounter an impossibly ancient stone archway called the Guardian of Forever. The Guardian (Bartell Larue) is so old it has developed consciousness and serves as a time travel conduit for curious historians. Unexpectedly, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) runs through the portal — he's hopped up on drugs — and travels instantly to Earth in 1930. Kirk and Spock follow him to ensure he doesn't foul with history.
In 1930, Kirk meets an activist named Edith Keeler (Joan Collins), a kindly soul who speaks out against the growing war efforts in Europe. Kirk falls in love. Spock, however, constructs a widget showing him that only two possible futures can come of their time travel interference. It seems that if Edith Keeler dies in a car accident, it will retain...

Described as a propulsive thriller, the film’s logline is under wraps. Tania Landau will oversee for Moritz’s Original Film, with Vanessa Joyce overseeing for Paramount. We’re told the script when out last week to studio-based producers, with no attachments. Moritz immediately sparked to the material and got the studio to preempt the script in 24 hours.

In the "Star Trek" episode "And the Children Shall Lead", the Enterprise discovers a remote science station where the entire staff seems to have died by their own hands. Chillingly, the children of the staff -- all of them under 12 -- seem oblivious to the dead bodies scattered around, happily playing and giggling as usual. Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) posits that the kids might have blocked out the horrors as a form of protective amnesia, but soon the real plot is revealed. In private, the children are visited by a ghostly being named Gorgan who imbues them with eerie mental powers and gives them dark instructions.
Gorgan tells the children to take over the Enterprise, which they are able to do by pumping their fists and hypnotizing the crew. Sulu (George Takei) looks at the viewscreen and sees knives and swords. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) looks in a mirror and sees...

Often considered one of the worst episodes of "Star Trek," "Spock's Brain" boasted a story wherein a species of low-intelligence aliens infiltrate the U.S.S. Enterprise, sedate everyone on board, and steal the grey matter belonging to Spock (Leonard Nimoy) for nefarious purposes. It will later be revealed that Spock's brain was required to power a super-computer on a nearby planet and that the computer could temporarily inject complex information and skills into people's heads. The crew of the Enterprise outfit Spock's brainless body with a temporary brain-like machine, and they can pilot him via remote control.
Eventually, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) will be injected -- via the supercomputer -- with knowledge of how to surgically return Spock's brain to his body. When McCoy runs out of knowledge partway through the operation, the now-conscious Spock talks him the rest of the way through. "Spock's Brain" is farfetched and silly,...

"Star Trek" is a dream gig, but it can also be a nightmare. Brent Spiner, who played the android Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," spoke to TV Guide in 1994 about how he will always be Data in the eyes of the public. He could win an Oscar for playing an elderly woman, he said, and still die knowing that Data would be listed first in his obituary. "Star Trek" is such a powerful force in the pop cultural zeitgeist that playing a "Trek" character can mark an actor forever; it must have been hard to walk away from "Star Trek," walk into another audition, and hear "Hey! It's Chekov!" or "Do the Riker thing!"
This was certainly experienced by DeForest Kelley a prolific TV actor and well-known pop culture heavy prior to "Star Trek." Gene Roddenberry already knew Kelley in the early '60s after the pair worked...

Director J.J. Abrams' philosophy toward making his 2009 reboot of "Star Trek" likely involved a lot of uses of the words "high octane" and "kicked into overdrive." The characters in Abrams' "Star Trek" resemble the ones we all remember from the 1966 TV series, but electrified for a modern, action-hungry audience. Kirk (Chris Pine) is not just a captain who rules by instinct and occasionally snogs alien women (as William Shatner did), but a rash, skirt-chasing, destructive young punk who gets into bar brawls. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is not merely a logical scientist who, under rare circumstances, lets his human emotions slip through his stony visage (as Leonard Nimoy was), but a perpetually annoyed pill who, more regularly, is given to flights of rage and/or romance.
In the case of Sulu (John Cho), he is not merely a capable pilot with unusual hobbies, a great sense of humor, and a...

Prior to his gig on "Star Trek" in 1966, actor DeForest Kelley spent 20 years traversing the wild and hoary world of episodic television and appearing in supporting roles in little-regarded feature films. His first professional screen acting job was a one-off performance in the one-season 1947 TV series "Public Prosecutor." The series holds the distinction of being the first-ever mainstream televised series to be released on film, instead of being broadcast live, which was standard at the time.
Between that show and "Star Trek," Kelley appeared on over 80 TV shows, often just in single episodes, but sometimes returning for two or three. He also had bit roles in films like "Variety Girl," "The Men," "Taxi," and "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," playing Morgan Earp. He was just a hardworking character actor, taking the jobs that were offered him. There is an integrity to that approach.

It's unlikely that any of the actors who appeared on "Star Trek" in 1966 would assume they would be playing the same roles 18 years later, but "Star Trek" has had a curious habit of longevity. Each time the franchise dies out, the landscape shifts and the series is revived. That's certainly what happened in 1979 with the release of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". After the original series was canceled in 1969, it was put into eternal syndication, allowing new audiences to find it for years thereafter. Trek conventions began in earnest in the mid-1970s, interest was renewed, and, lo, "Star Trek" returned. Sequel movies were put into production, and by 1986, the franchise released Leonard Nimoy's "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," the biggest hit in all of "Star Trek" until the release of J.J. Abrams' film in 2009.

Vasquez Rocks is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County about 25 minutes away from Downtown L.A. via the 14 freeway. It's close enough to the city to be easily accessed by car, but far away enough to look like a remote wilderness. The park's celebrated rock formations look eerie, ancient, and alien from certain angles, making it a popular place for film and TV productions going back to the 1930s.
Trekkies likely recognize Vasquez Rocks as an oft-reused filming location, serving as a variety of alien worlds for various "Star Trek" projects. The park was featured in the "Original Series" episodes "Shore Leave", "Arena", "The Alternative Factor", and "Friday's Child". Later, Vasquez Rocks would serve as Vulcan "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," released in 1983 and 1984 respectively.

In the "Star Trek" episode "Metamorphosis", an important dignitary named Commissioner Nancy Hedford (Elinor Donohue) is being transported to the U.S.S. In the "Star Trek" episode "Metamorphosis", guest character Commissioner Nancy Hedford (Elinor Donahue) is taking a break from a vital diplomatic mission to be treated for a rare and potentially fatal condition on board the Enterprise. Her shuttle is attacked, however, by a mysterious energy blob, causing it to crash on a nearby — and presumably uninhabited — planet. Inexplicably, Hedford, Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are greeted by a man named Zefram Cochrane (Glenn Corbett), the inventor of warp engines who had disappeared a century earlier. In the "Star Trek" episode "Court Martial", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is brought on trial following the death of one of his officers, Lieutenant Commander Finney (Richard Webb). The U.S.S. Enterprise had encountered an ion storm and was being buffetted so badly it faced potential destruction. To flee the damage, Kirk had to eject a research vessel while Finney was still on board, sending his officer to his death.
This was a difficult command decision, of course, but there was some debate as to whether or not Kirk ejected the vessel while the Enterprise was at red alert, or if Kirk panicked and ejected the vessel while the Enterprise was still at yellow alert. The latter would be seen as grounds for incompetence and Kirk would be ejected from Starfleet. Sam Waterson's departure from Law & Order left a hole that'll be hard to fill. Waterson played Jack McCoy for 30 years, making his name synonymous with the long-running police/lawyer procedural.
Someone had to take his place, and Tony Goldwyn is not only an accomplished actor in his own right but has appeared within the Law & Order universe before. (Goldwyn played Frank Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.)
Goldwyn's Nicholas Baxter has only had a few episodes to shine in. He's a different type of district attorney than McCoy, so his character will take some getting used to, but the change in direction could be precisely what Law & Order Season 23 needs.
McCoy was often soft-spoken, though he could get loud when he was passionately angry and mostly stayed in his office. Baxter differentiated himself from the get-go; his first scene involved inserting himself into a crime scene and introducing himself.

Replacing Waterston won’t be easy. The 83-year-old’s retirement from the series created a major vacancy in TV’s most famous police procedural. And that’s a genre already difficult to keep compelling in an increasingly divided America. “Law & Order” is still doing well in the ratings,...

Leaving his post after 30 years, McCoy assured his colleagues that the next Da would be an even stronger legal mind.
Replacing Waterston won’t be easy. The 83-year-old’s retirement from the series created a major vacancy in TV’s most famous police procedural. And that’s a genre already difficult to keep compelling in an increasingly divided America. “Law & Order” is still doing well in the ratings,...

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 23, Episode 4 of “Law & Order.”]
Among Sam Waterston’s last words as Jack McCoy was “integrity.”
The film and television actor walked away from “Law & Order” for good Thursday night, February 22, ending his 30-year stint as Dick Wolf’s most recognizable Manhattan D.A. in a mixed bag of an episode. An awkward Central Park swan song (goose song?), Season 23’s “Last Dance” demonstrates not only how much Waterston has changed as a performer — but just how little police procedurals have been able to evolve with socially divided network audiences in recent years.
Yes, Jack’s junkyard dog bravado gave way to a subtler anger in the series’ revival seasons; and he stopped sleeping with all those assistant district attorneys, which certainly helped. But the hero lawyer’s final chapter is chockfull of awkward political posturing that plays as indicative of a genre increasingly uncomfortable with its role in American culture. The...

Leading international industry figures have joined the debate about Germany’s revamp of its national film funding system, criticising in particular the proposed introduction of an investment obligation.

We also got a new detective, and she appears to be the closest thing Benson has to a kindred spirit.
Benson's been traumatized since Maddie's disappearance, tormenting herself with her realization that she passed Maddie and her kidnapper while coming out of the tunnel.

Saying goodbye to a beloved character is never easy, especially one who has graced our screens for three decades.
The good news is that Law & Order Season 23 Episode 5 didn't end by killing Jack McCoy. That would have been too heartbreaking to bear.
Instead, McCoy left on his own terms, standing up for justice one last time before handing in his resignation. If we had to say goodbye to him, this was how to do it.
I've recently complained that McCoy has been limited to sitting behind a desk and asking Nolan if he can win the case of the hour. But McCoy's swan song changed that.
This time, the roles were reversed. Nolan wanted to plead out Kelton's case, while McCoy wanted accountability for a senseless murder and didn't care who stood in his way.
That was the Jack McCoy I've known and loved since the early 90s. I...

[This story contains spoilers from the Feb. 22, 2024 episode of Law & Order, “Last Dance.”]
Jack McCoy left the world of Law & Order the way he came into it — in a courtroom.
Sam Waterston said goodbye to the long-running NBC franchise in Thursday’s episode, ending his 19-season, 405-episode run as prosecutor-turned-New York County District Attorney Jack McCoy. Waterston’s final episode saw Jack returning to the courtroom to finish trying a murder case in which the defendant is a billionaire with close ties to New York’s mayor.
The episode, titled “Last Dance” and written by showrunner Rick Eid, constructs a solid but not slam-dunk case against Scott Kelton (Rob Benedict), who’s accused of killing a former employee, Veronica Knight (Shay Guthrie), who was about to go public with an accusation that he had sexually assaulted her several years earlier. In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.
As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Ensign Pavel Chekov, played by Walter Koenig, first appeared in the "Star Trek" episode "Catspaw", the first episode of the show's second season. The appearance of a forthrightly Russian character, and a hero at that, communicated to Trekkies that the Cold War of the 1960s was not only over but that Russians would now be working in harmony with American characters like Captain Kirk (born in Iowa) and Dr. McCoy. In the role, Koenig brought a great deal of energy and humor, happy to interject into formal conversations to point out that Russians actually founded most of the Earth's most important innovations. Although already 30, Koenig also communicated a youthful energy, serving as a vital counterpoint to the judicious commanding officers on the U.S.S. Enterprise.

What? We can't believe Sam Waterson's leaving Law & Order.

But sometimes, a character has gone as far as he can. McCoy may be ready to retire, which offers an opportunity to breathe new life into the oldest member of the Law & Order franchise.
McCoy is an old-school district attorney -- the kind of man the younger characters look to as a mentor. This is how Law & Order district attorneys tend to be; when he was young, he reported to Adam Schiff, who had many years of experience.
But times have changed, and Law & Order is overdue for a shakeup. Many viewers who love Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order: Organized Crime are having a hard time connecting with this reboot, so something needs to change.

It's not easy to be a district attorney, especially in a big city like Manhattan, where competing pressures exist.
Jack McCoy should be perfectly poised to handle it. He was an Ada for years, is passionate about justice, and knows the ins and outs of the legal system.
But on Law & Order Season 23 Episode 3, McCoy again made a questionable decision based on what would most likely win the case. It was less egregious than entering a potentially fake video into evidence, but it still felt like McCoy had lost his way.
Cops should never be put on pedestals, and questioning their integrity and fitness for the job is fair game. And since Riley got tipsy on the job and punched his supervisor, he would have faced public questioning about it sooner or later.
But McCoy's decision about this was purely political. He weighed the possibility that the cops wouldn't...

If the show isn’t making noise for its Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Drama in December, then it’s drumming up excitement for the return of Steve Burton as Jason Morgan this year, as well as the return of Eden McCoy from a brief hiatus, and how it’s bringing on new showrunners to keep the drama hopping in Port Charles.
But the linear ratings tell a slightly different story, if not a depressing one — especially for those who are rooting for the survival of broadcast television. According to season-to-date ratings versus one year ago, Gh is down 9% among total viewers (2.2m vs. 2.4m) and down 9% in women 18+ (1.6m v. 1.8m).
The news isn’t much better over at CBS, which still remains the most watched network in daytime.

At the beginning of William Shatner's 1989 film "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-a is on shore leave, taking a much-needed breather while their ship undergoes extensive repairs and improvements. Scotty (James Doohan) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) are overseeing the repairs back on the ship. Chekhov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) are hiking together in Yosemite while Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Captain Kirk (Shatner), and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) set up their own camp nearby. This must not be a very long shore leave, otherwise I assume these people would all be at home visiting their families and not hanging out with their co-workers.
At night, McCoy, Kirk, and Spock gather around a campfire, cook beans, and enjoy marshmallows. Everything is comfortably low-tech. Kirk and McCoy attempt to introduce Spock to the Earth tradition of singing songs around the campfire, teaching him the lyrics to "Row,...

Nicholas Chavez, who has been portraying long-time General Hospital character Spencer Cassadine since 2021, will be going on hiatus from the ABC soap opera very, very soon. As reported by TVLine, Chavez’s final episode for a while will air this Wednesday, January 31. However, this isn’t a permanent goodbye but rather a temporary absence while Chavez goes to film a leading role in Ryan Murphy‘s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story. It hasn’t yet been explained how the long-running daytime soap will write Spencer out of the series or if he’ll be replaced by another actor, similar to how Courtney Fulk took over from Eden McCoy as Jossyln Jacks while McCoy was on hiatus. As speculated by Michael Fairman, it’s possible Spencer will follow Trina (Tabyana Ali) to Paris, where she is set to study at the Sorbonne for a semester. This would allow the...

There is exciting news for General Hospital viewers as fan-favorite Eden McCoy is set to return to Port Charles this week to reprise her role as Josslyn Jacks. As reported by TVLine, McCoy is expected to make her much-anticipated comeback on the Thursday, February 1, episode. Since her hiatus in mid-December, actress Courtney Fulk has been portraying Josslyn on the long-running ABC soap opera. While the show nor McCoy confirmed a reason for her absence, many speculated it was due to the passing of the soap star’s mother, who died in November 2023 after a battle with cancer. “My mother has fought an intense battle with cancer for the past two-and-a-half years, and has now left us physically,” McCoy wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I’m not sure what to say other than she was, is, and will be the best thing I have ever known. She is...
