Ryan Castro is giving back to his beloved Bogotá on his new album. On Thursday night, the musician released his LP El Cantante del Ghetto, a tribute to his Colombian roots, fusing his signature reggaeton style with salsa, dancehall, and “everything that shaped me.”
The 18-track album features already-massive hits such as “Ghetto Star” with Coque and the Peso Pluma collaboration “Quema,” which they performed together at Coachella. The LP also includes songs with Jowell & Randy, Arcángel, Rich the Kid, and Blessd.

A couple of years ago, Residente engaged in a war of words with J Balvin. Admittedly, it wasn’t a fair fight, at least on those terms, with one of Spanish-language hip-hop’s most accomplished artists putting the popwise Colombian reggaetonero on the defensive. Lurking beneath this back-and-forth volley of since-deleted video rants and dueling hot dog memes lay a deep seated criticism of the industry in which both artists operate, one where a dispute over representation at the Latin Grammys could prompt legitimate, almost existential animus between them. And...

Eighteen years ago, before his debut on the 2005 compilation album "Sangre Nueva," not many were familiar with Puerto Rican reggaetón artist Arcángel. In the early days of his music career, Arcángel would sing on mixtapes for his friends and for locals in the rough San Juan neighborhoods of Villa Palmeras and La Perla, where he grew up. But these days, he has millions of listeners tuning in to his music, making him one of the biggest stars of the genre.
As Arcángel sits down for our virtual interview, his usual sunglasses are off. He looks straight at the webcam - not the screen - as if having a face-to-face conversation.
There's a startling amount of empathy in his eyes, which is both surprising and not when you consider his tumultuous early years, marked by hustling on the streets and finding ways to get by. People tend to associate that kind of life with cynical personalities,...

Recently, the masterminds behind reggaeton's biggest stars and hitmakers have been coming into their own as artists. Last year, music producer Dímelo Flow released his debut album, "Always Dream." In June, producer Tainy also dropped his debut album, "Data." And now, Sky Rompiendo (real name Alejandro Ramírez Suárez) - one of the most in-demand Latin music producers of the past decade and the genius behind artists like J Balvin, Karol G, Maluma, and Feid - is shifting his focus from working behind the scenes to creating his own record. It's a move that has been long in the making, but for Rompiendo, the timing has been everything.
"I was inspired by all these producers like Pharrell, Timbaland, and Scott Storch - that whole movement of them eventually putting their faces up front and being more present in the scene versus not just always being behind the scenes," Rompiendo tells Popsugar.

In Puerto Rico, reggaetón is king. And while that fact has given multiple generations plenty of opportunities and anthems pa' perrear, it's also meant that alternative sounds, or even music that was reggaetón-adjacent, didn't get much love outside of the underground. But today, even amidst a new trap wave and a resurgence of the old school-reggaetón sound, a new guard of up-and-coming emcees is shifting the paradigm on the island. For his Rolling Stone cover story, out today, the Puerto Rican star wanted to honor the reggaeton heroes he looked up to as a kid by wearing jewel-encrusted medallion necklaces featuring their logos. Designed by Avi Davidov and Ofir Ben-Shimon, the medallions represent the decades-long careers of Puerto Rican luminaries Tego Calderón, Héctor El Father, Wisin Y Yandel, Arcángel, Don Omar, and Daddy Yankee.

Last week, Bad Bunny became the first Latin artist to headline Coachella. During his Weekend 2 set, the Puerto Rican rapper kept the celebration going, enlisting several Puerto Rican and Mexican artists to honor their Latin heritage.
After welcoming Mexican band Grupo Frontera, Bad Bunny left the stage to allow the group to perform “un x100to,” “No Se Va,” and “Bebe Dame.” The rapper returned to the stage in full ranchero attire to sing his part of the first track, a collaboration between the artists they just unveiled last week.
From there, Puerto Rican rapper Ñengo Flow and reggaeton duo Jowell & Randy joined Bad Bunny for “Safaera,” and rapper Jhayco came out to perform “Dákiti,” “Tarot,” and his own song “No Me Conoce.” The legendary musician José Feliciano also made an appearance, joining Bad Bunny for “La Canción” and “Yonaguni.”

A few weeks into kicking off his "Saturno World Tour," Puerto Rican and Latin trap artist Rauw Alejandro made a show-stopping entrance to an audience of more than 15,000 people by literally zip-lining his way onto the stage - while he was fully decked out in an alien-like ensemble. On Friday, Mar. 31, the reggaetonero put on a truly extraterrestrial performance - one of two back-to-back sold-out shows at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in his hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Popsugar was in attendance.
If these flashy performances were any indication, 2023 is panning out to become quite significant for Rauw Alejandro. The Latin Grammys are arguably the highest recognition in Hispanic music around the world. This year the award show will likely host some of the biggest and most acclaimed Latin stars. With names like Shakira, Karol G, and Rauw Alejandro all in the mix, who will nab some noms come nomination’s day?
The biggest name in Latin music right now is Karol G. The Colombian singer has made history with her album “Mañana Será Bonito” becoming the first all-Spanish album by a female artist to top the Billboard 200. She is already a two-time Latin Grammy winner, and since she’s likely the biggest urban music star of the season, it’s likely she picks up a couple of awards in the field. Since arriving in 2016 with his debut, El Final del Principio, his star has risen on the strength of his uncanny flow and cadence, sharp lyrics, and prolific work ethic on a series of releases that have seen him honor the barrios that raised him while attracting listeners worldwide. After moving seamlessly from rap en español to Latin pop, he had his biggest success yet with the Latin Grammy-nominated 2021 album Lyke Mike, which...

The diss track is ubiquitous in music, and it’s an especially common fixture in reggaeton. The genre, which flourished in Puerto Rico’s underground in the Nineties, drew heavily on hip hop and dancehall, two genres in which feuds between artists and crews erupt regularly. In reggaeton, those influences, along with the realities of organized crime lurking around the industry, gave rise to the tiraera (call it “tiradera” at your own risk). A slang term for diss tracks, tiraeras became almost like a rite of passage for artists who...

Saint Nick who? ? Tonight, we celebrate San Benito — even if he’s doing something unholy. On Thursday, Bad Bunny and Ñengo Flow released “Gato de Noche,” which Bad Bunny teased on TikTok earlier this week.
“He loves you and would do anything for you/But you’re a devil who’s crazy for me. You like bad things,” he sings in Spanish, later adding lyrics about pulling hair and confessing, “if you’re a sin, I’ll follow you to hell if I keep watching that big ass.”

Maluma knows that sex sells. One need only refer to his last full-length effort, 2020’s Papi Juancho, which returned the Colombian singer and bonafide superstar to smutty form following the arena ambitions of the preceding 11:11. His ability to pivot between the after hours sinful pleasure seeking of “Felices Los 4” and the Hollywood-polished rom-com accessibility of this year J. Lo starrer Marry Me shows that he’s a successful smooth operator in the music industry.
In the roughly two years since Papi Juancho, the Latin pop landscape has somehow both broadened and narrowed.

On their 2019 single, “Sigues Con Él,” Dominican-American Mc Arcángel and Panamanian singer Sech plead with a woman to ditch her loser boyfriend. Yet on a brand new remix, bachata superstar Romeo Santos crashes their pity party and offers his own perspective.
Initially featured on Arcángel’s 2019 studio album, Historias de un Capricornio (Tales of a Capricorn), the new song is a glossy reggaeton number, garnished with delicate touches of harp and tropical percussion. “¿Por qué sigues con él?,” or “Why do you stay with him?” ask Arcángel and Sech. “When you were drunk,...

During the last two years, Bad Bunny has left no box unchecked en route to attaining global superstardom. His 2018 debut X 100pre (which featured assists from a small handful of co-stars including Diplo, El Alfa and Drake) was a crossover experiment that saw El Conejo level up from newcomer to pop titan. Since then, the 25-year-old Latin trap artist has graced Coachella’s main stage, collaborated with J Balvin on the joint LP Oasis, worked with pals Residente and Ricky Martin to help oust the Governor of Puerto Rico, received three Grammy nominations,...

The drip determines everything nowadays in trap. Iced-out watches, bracelets, rings, and other bejeweled accessories signal success in line with the most braggadocious of a given rapper’s bars. But the coldness goes deeper than swag on “Hielo,” the latest single by Puerto Rican urbano artist Eladio Carrión and hit-making songwriter Jhay Cortez.
Sure, Carrión drops references to Vvs diamonds; yet the hook on this crisp single makes clear that nothing freezes like a certain someone’s kiss. The two pitch woo at the ladies they’re eyeing as traperos do best,...

It was 8 p.m. on a Saturday in New York City — and somewhere inside Madison Square Garden, a Bad Bunny fan was missing a chancla. Although it seemed rather early in the night for misplacing odd articles of footwear, the lone rubber sandal with ‘Puerto Rico’ printed on its strap, abandoned at the base of an escalator, would foreshadow a wild night to come.
