Charli Xcx released her sixth studio album on June 7. “Brat” comes just two years after “Crash” landed in March 2022. The British pop star has been around more than a decade now, but she hasn’t earned any Grammy noms as a lead artist yet, and she hasn’t won any hardware. Could this finally be her time to shine?
“Brat” has a sky-high MetaCritic score of 92 based on 17 reviews counted as of this writing — every single one of them classified as positive. Among those raving about the album is Poppie Platt (The Telegraph UK), who calls it “a courageous, candid reflection on how dreadful it can feel to constantly be the ‘cool girl,’ the one who laughs off failure, or pretends not to care what the critics think.” Adds Laura Snapes (The Guardian), “Charli’s unbarred feelings of insecurity, bitchiness and obsession are so fiercely well observed that they make...

We can’t help it: We’re so “Obsessed” with all things Olivia Rodrigo. Aside from being ultra-talented and breaking numerous chart records, the “Vampire” singer also has excellent taste. There’s a whole breadth of options to choose from when it comes to picking out gifts for her fans.

Music festival season has been bringing together some dream pairings of acts that wouldn’t usually cross paths. In April, Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt during a special reunion performance at Coachella. Then, just last week, Ed Sheeran fulfilled a childhood dream when he performed with the Offspring at BottleRock Fest. And this past weekend, Noah Kahan took the stage at Railbird Festival for a headlining performance, where he was joined for a duet with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz.

Rock music is far from dead. Last year’s Grammy nominations proved that, with some of the leading acts in music being present in the rock categories. Alongside legends like The Rolling Stones and Metallica, the field was graced by the presence of Gen-z’s favorite artists, such as Boygenius, Arctic Monkeys and Olivia Rodrigo. So to find great rock music these days, you just have to pay attention. We are certainly paying attention this year, with a slew of buzzy releases already in the conversation to take home the gold come Grammy time.
One of the biggest stories in rock this season is the return of The Beatles with the single “Now and Then.” It’s unclear if the song will be competing in pop or in rock, but either way it’s for sure getting them a nomination. A music video made to their hit song “I’m...

How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

“The ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony’ is truly music’s highest honor because we’re honoring artists that are generational,” says Joel Peresman, CEO of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. He also served as an executive producers for the live broadcast that aired on November 3, 2023 on Disney+. Watch our video interview above.
“They’re not one hit wonders,” he continues. “They’re not people that come and go. They’re artists that have had lasting impact on other artists, on society, on culture, their impact is immeasurable.” The 2023 honorees included Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.
Elliott made history as the first female hip-hop artist inducted, and Peresman addresses critics who complain that certain artists inducted don’t fit the “rock & roll” mold. “Well, rock and roll is a broad tent,” he asserts.

“It got me. I was extremely emotional. I was definitely crying,” admits award-winning actress Vanessa Hudgens while discussing her “The Masked Singer” win as Goldfish. “It ended meaning so much more to me than a normal win would because it had nothing to do with the celebrity of me or the idea of me. It had everything to do with what I on the inside bring to the table and my talents. It ended up definitely meaning the world.”
The actress says she worked closely with her producer while choosing songs throughout the season. “I didn’t go into this trying to hide who I was,” she reveals. “I was kind of being really cheeky about the musical choices. ‘Vampire’ was by Olivia Rodrigo, who plays Gabriella in the new ‘High School Musical.’ I thought that was hilarious, and just a great song. It was marketed as a utopia of British entertainment – a £365 million ($460 million) project that would be Europe‘s biggest indoor arena thanks to its 23,500 seats and standing spaces.
But what bosses had hoped to be an impressive display of the U.K.’s commitment to the arts turned out to be a somewhat embarrassing chain of events that saw concerts canceled, part of the ceiling coming apart, and its grand opening delayed.
On Tuesday, they finally did it: Manchester’s Co-op Live had its maiden gig, and around 12,000 people filed in to watch English rock band Elbow (who were originally meant to play the site’s 15th concert).
The venue’s largest shareholders include Harry Styles‘ label Erekine Records and City Football Group, a sports holding company that owns the likes of soccer club Manchester City and is 81 percent-owned by Abu Dhabi United Group, 18 percent by U.S. private equity...

Jimmy Kimmel gave a hitchhiking Bruce Springsteen a lift—at least that’s what Kimmel’s daughter thought.
In an interview with Good Morning America today, Kimmel revealed the origins of Stewart’s surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week, and his daughter’s reaction to the bit.
The pre-taped segment featured Kimmel and his wife—co-head writer and executive producer Molly McNearney—driving their kids Jane and Billy to school and picking up a hitchhiking Stewart along the way. The bit was a reference to a Jkl segment from six months ago, when Kimmel picked up Olivia Rodrigo, who his kids are huge fans of.
Unsurprisingly, they were less interested in carpooling with Stewart.
“We picked up Olivia Rodrigo, and then Jon called and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if you picked me up and then the kids don’t know who I am?,’” Kimmel told GMA.

As the 2024 presidential election inches closer, two nonprofit groups favored by pop icons and Hollywood stars are merging to get out the vote.
I Am a Voter has been absorbed by HeadCount. The latter is a field operation that provides voter registration and education at concerts and music festivals, heavily courting young people.
Both organizations identify as nonpartisan, and will now share resources and expertise ahead of November. Collectively, the groups have been utilized or endorsed by Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Alicia Keys, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Aniston and Olivia Rodrigo. Brands have also partnered with each, including the NBA, Major League Baseball, Spotify, Mattel and Liquid Death.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.

Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge has applauded a new music licensing deal with TikTok which ends a recent months-long standoff over royalties to be paid out around the social media platform.
“It’s another significant step we’ve taken to guide the industry’s evolution to a future where human artistry must be respected,” Grainge told an analyst call after the release of his company’s first quarter financial results. He argued the resolution of the TikTok dispute had impacts beyond a single social media platform.
“The income from social media is increasingly important income to artists, songwriters, labels and publishers, which is why we’ve pushed so hard and we will continue to push hard to protect and to develop it,” Grainge warned.
“Ultimately, the point of engaging in such conflicts is to find a higher common ground from which new and greater progress can be made.

Katy Perry is reportedly leaving American Idol, and allegedly, she ignored fans calling for her attention and played with her phone during commercial breaks. Pop history is littered with prolific partnerships, but the artist-producer pairing is arguably one of the most indispensable. Not only can an intrepid knob-twirler coax the best out of an artist, the most fruitful of these collaborations are often reciprocal. Think George Martin and the Beatles; Timbaland and Missy Elliott; or Jam & Lewis and Janet Jackson. Taylor Swift and former Fun guitarist-drummer Jack Antonoff have both achieved commercial and critical success outside of their work together, but their alliance over the last several years has, more often than not, resulted in pop magic.
The duo first worked together over a decade ago, on the unassuming “Sweeter Than Fiction,” a song from the British-American film One Chance. The following year, Antonoff co-wrote and co-produced three tracks for Swift’s blockbuster album 1989, the success of which propelled him to the top of every A&r exec’s wish list, helming tracks for Pink,...
