Nothing quite hits like a tale straight from the heart and after realising he needed to find his own authentic authorial voice, filmmaker Joshua Okwuosa set out to tell an evocative story central to the Nigerian experience and his own life with Okem. A story with origins that are hauntingly commonplace, Okwuosa maintains the verisimilitude of his storytelling by ratcheting up the tension as we focus on the helpless and desperate attempts made by Nigerian immigrant Okem to help his mother back home. Okem is a sharp reminder of the brutal realities faced by people all over the world who are forced to leave their homelands in the hope of providing for their families back home. Ahead of Okem’s premiere on the pages of Dn today, we were able to talk to Okwuosa about the struggles he faced finding an Igbo speaking actor for the role, building the claustrophobia...

In gangster movies, it’s the moment that we see a Mob wife proudly snaking her arms into the sleeves of a gorgeous fur or a decked-out piece of jewelry that sells the point: There’s no such thing as innocence when you’re complicit. Even the people married to monsters have a price. Adamma Ebo’s debut feature Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. (which is now in theaters and streaming on Peacock) is about the Black church, not gangsters, but it has a similar moment, with the embattled...

Plot: A controversial pastor and his wife, attempt to start their ministry again after a scandal nearly destroyed everything for the two.
Review: Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. That’s the title. The new comedic satire directed by Adamma Ebo examines a pastor and his wife dealing with a past scandal. And yes, it’s one that we’ve seen happen to a few famous televangelists and such, now and again. The film stars Sterling K. Brown as Lee-Curtis Childs, pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist Church. His wife, Trinitie Childs, is played by the talented Regina Hall. The two desperately attempt to bring their uplifting gospel words back to his congregation. Yet, with Lee-Curtis’ past and the desire to spend more and more money, the two may not be ready for the big leagues again.

Sterling K. Brown is Lee-Curtis Childs, a successful for-profit preacher who has lost his congregation, due to vague allegations that become clearer as the story unfolds. “Marriage is the only way to prosperity and the only way into the kingdom of God,” exclaims Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), the pastor of a Southern Baptist megachurch, “Take it from me… I am the prophet with the beautiful wife and the gorgeous Bugatti!” The crowd of worshippers laugh and applaud, either glad or ignorant about their role in bankrolling a charlatan. Lee-Curtis and his wife Trinitie (Regina Hall) use religion not for the community but for their own pursuit of wanton materialism. This is the satirical conceit of Adamma Ebo’s Honk for Jesus. Save your Soul. and it lays it on very thick within the opening half hour.
For example, during a tour of their cavernous walk-in wardrobe, Trinitie talks of avoiding extravagance as Lee-Curtis tries on a pair of glittery turquoise loafers and a yellow trilby hat. Another scene sees the couple sitting on gilded thrones.

"We need you back in that pulpit!" Focus Features has revealed the official trailer for the satirical comedy Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul., which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film plays as a mockumentary about a very fancy, wealthy Pastor and First Lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch. It follows them through the aftermath of a huge scandal, trying to move on from what they did and recover and rebuild their congregation. Regina Hall stars as Trinitie Childs, and Sterling K. Brown as Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs. It's a funny look at how ridiculously scammy and awful these "megachurches" are, and how these people are incredibly fake and will do anything to maintain their God-like perfect image, even if it's complete bullshit. The cast includes Nicole Beharie, Conphidance, Austin Crute, Devere Rogers, Robert Yatta, & Greta Glenn. This received mixed reviews during Sundance, but it looks better than it sounds,...

Even right down to the title this religious comedy debuting appropriately today on a Sunday in the Premieres section of the Sundance Film Festival can’t seem to decide what it wants to be. Is it Honk For Jesus.? Or is it Save Your Soul.? Or is it as the credits say both? It is a indication of the main problem with this self-styled satire on scandal-ridden Southern Baptist megachurches. Is it supposed to be a comedy? Or is it aiming to be something deeper and more dramatic? Or is it both? Even for the best of satirists trying to keep an even tone without watching the whole souffle fall is a slippery slope, one that writer/director Adamma Ebo hasn’t quite solved, but not for lack of trying. As many have discovered, drama is easy, comedy is hard.

How to take on the hypocrisy of megachurch culture on a micro budget? That’s the quandary at the center of the Ebo twins’ “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.” An easy-target satire of a disgraced Southern Baptist pastor and the first lady who stood by his side amid scandal, packed as a Christopher Guest-style mock documentary, writer-director Adamma Ebo’s indie comedy (produced by sister Adanne) should tickle those who share her skepticism of organized religion — especially the profit-oriented variety — but doesn’t go much deeper than the 15-minute short film on which it’s based.
The biggest upgrade here comes from recasting power couple Lee-Curtis and Trinitie Childs with Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall, actors who bring layers to what could have been a one-joke wonder. Initially scanning as a “Best in Show”-esque mockumentary send-up of megachurch culture in the time of #MeToo, Adamma Ebo’s feature directorial debut “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul” steadily moves into darker territory, though Featuring stars Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown doing predictably divine work (do these two performers know any other way?), “Honk for Jesus” is equal parts hilarious and painful, an incisive upbraiding of the sorts of people who should have long ago realized no one — especially nattily attired pastors — is above God.
Once top of the heap in their Georgia town, thanks to their thousands-strong Southern Baptist congregation at the snazzy Wander to Greater Pastures megachurch, Trinitie (Hall) and Lee-Curtis (Brown) are months deep into a scandal that’s nearly sunk them. Through amusingly crafted newscasts and fake archival footage, Ebo introduces the duo and their current lot in life — not great, but as Trinitie tells us,...

No stars, no problem — that may not be the official tagline for “Little America,” but it’s certainly the ethos guiding Lee Eisenberg, Kumail Nanjiani, and Emily Gordon’s new series to success. Absent the big names and stripped of the grand scale tied to every Apple launch title, these eight standalone episodes are inspired by true stories of individual immigrants and their accomplishments in America. Every episode has a new cast, writer, and director; every episode offers a new point of view; not every episode is capital-g “Great!” but they’re all at least, “Pretty good!” Together, they make for a heartwarming, engaging, and informative season — all by focusing on story first, rather than famous faces or bottom lines.
Though episodes tell their own stories, the creative trio listed above serve as the roadmap through “Little America,” plus Sian Heder, who’s an E.P. and co-showrunner with Eisenberg.

Apple TV + has unveiled the trailer for “Little America,” its upcoming anthology series. Each half-hour episode will focus on the true experiences of immigrants that were featured in Epic Magazine, with a focus on the “little” but profound stories that other Americans don’t typically have the opportunities to read about in the media.
“Little America” premieres on January 17, 2020 and Apple will release all of Season 1’s eight episodes at once.
The uplifting “Little America” trailer opens with a handful of immigrants sharing their favorite or surprise experiences about living in the United States — such as discovering baseball and bacon chili cheeseburgers — before teases of some of its specific storylines. One episode, “The Manager,” will follow a 12-year-old who must learn to run a Utah hotel when his parents are deported to India, while “The Jaguar” will focus on Marisol, an undocumented Mexican teenager who navigates the world of competitive squash.

In the trailer above, you’ll see that “Little America” aims to go “beyond the headlines to bring to life the funny, romantic, heartfelt and surprising stories of immigrants in America.” And that includes some really great “Only in America…” jokes.
The anthology series, which will launch all eight of its Season 1 episodes Jan. 17 on Apple TV+, stars Zachary Quinto (“Star Trek” franchise), Haaz Sleiman, Mélanie Laurent (“Inglorious Bastards”), Shaun Toub, Conphidance and Sherilyn Fenn (“Twin Peaks”).
