Inspirational Pic ‘Triumph’ Scores Cinemark Release; Quiver Distribution Books ‘The Retreat’ For May
Brett Leonard’s Triumph, the inspirational wrestling movie starring Rj Mitte and Terrence Howard and inspired by screenwriter Michael D. There's been a change of plans at Netflix. The streaming service previously renewed The Society TV series for a second season. Now, those plans have been cancelled due to Covid-19.
A mystery drama, The Society stars Rachel Keller, Kathryn Newton, Alex Fitzalan, Kristine Froseth, Jacques Colimon, Sean Berdy, Toby Wallace, Gideon Adlon, Olivia DeJonge, Alex MacNicoll, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jose Julian, Salena Qureshi, Jack Mulhern, and Grace Victoria Cox. This modern retelling of Lord of the Flies centers on students from a wealthy New England enclave, who return home from a scrubbed camping trip to find everyone they left behind has vanished. While at first, they decide to take advantage of the situation, it soon becomes clear they need to establish some sort of social order, while they figure out what has happened to them and where they really are.

Updated: Following The Society’s surprise cancellation Friday, star Kathryn Newton posted a photo of her castmates with the caption “I Am Proud #TheSociety”, on Twitter Friday. (You can see it below.)
Newton later went live on Instagram, joined by co-star Gideon Adlon, to directly address the show’s fans.
“I’m heartbroken, so heartbroken,” Newton said in the video. (You can watch it below)
Added Adlon, “It’s definitely a bit of a gut-punch… “It’s a big bummer. But this is the way things work sometimes. We have no control over it.”
Newton noted that “we all really wanted to go back” into production on Season 2 amid the pandemic. “Everything was written. I can’t even believe it,” she added, a reference to the completed scripts for the previously greenlighted second season.
The Society had been eying a production start date next month, something Adlon alluded to.

Exclusive: Netflix has reversed its Season 2 renewal decision for The Society. The Ya drama, whose production was impacted by Covid-19, has been canceled and won’t film a second season. Additionally, Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of another coming-of-age series, I Am Not Okay With This.
While there had been no official renewal, I hear comedy-drama I Am Not Okay With This had been quietly picked up for a second season, scripts were written, and it was fully on track to go into production.
The Society was renewed last summer for a second season, which had been slated to premiere in late 2020. I hear the delayed season had been eyeing potential start of filming next month.

A bunch of teens get a renewed sense of freedom in Netflix's new drama series...
There's a new Netflix series on the way in a couple of weeks that could be worth a watch. The Society - sadly nothing to do with Brian Yuzna's body horror classic, Society - is aiming for a The 100 meets Lord Of The Flies kinda vibe, as a group of teenagers are "mysteriously transported" to a strange version of their home town that has the added bonus (for some) of "no parents."
Soon, the kids' off the chain approach to living descends into dangerous territory, as they try to piece together why they're at the centre of these strange events, and how to get back to reality.

Netflix caters very well to the younger crowd.
But in doing so, they never lose sight of the other audience members who might tune into one of their shows.
The Society can be compared to a modern-day Lord of the Flies, and you know how that story resonated with anyone who read it (or watched adaptations).

The first teaser for the upcoming Netflix series “The Society” might make parents think twice about leaving their teenage children home alone.
Described as a modern take on “Lord of the Flies,” the series follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a place identical to their wealthy New England town — but their parents are nowhere to be found.
“Mom, it’s me again. Where is everyone?” a teenage girl asks as she leaves her unresponsive mother a voicemail as Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend” plays in the background.

“Mom, it’s me again. Where is everyone?”, begins the teaser trailer for The Society, Netflix’s Ya 10-episode drama series written by Chris Keyser and directed by Marc Webb. “It’s been nine days. We’re all alone. Some of us thought it would be fun to be in charge of ourselves. Things got bad.”
Described as a modern take on Lord of the Flies, The Society follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town without any trace of their parents. Their newfound freedom will be fun… but it will also be very dangerous. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.
The Society’s cast includes Rachel Keller (Cassandra), Kathryn Newton (Allie), Alex Fitzalan (Harry), Kristine Froseth (Kelly...

With Netflix producing Joe Berlinger’s documentary series on Ted Bundy, it was a no-brainer they would pick up the director’s Zac Efron-led narrative take on the serial killer, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Premiering at Sundance this year, the drama follows his crimes from the perspective of his girlfriend Liz (Lily Collins). Also starring Kaya Scodelario, Jeffrey Donovan, Angela Sarafyan, Dylan Baker, Brian Geraghty, Terry Kinney, Haley Joel Osment, James Hetfield, Grace Victoria Cox, Jim Parsons, and John Malkovich, Netflix has now debuted a new trailer ahead of a May release.
I said in my review, “From exhaustive investigative documentaries to slick, disturbing thrillers to even meta tales of destruction courtesy of Lars von Trier, it seems like the serial killer movie has been covered from every possible angle. "Do you feel sorry about what you did?" The Orchard has debuted the official trailer for an indie drama titled Savage Youth, which premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival last year and stopped by a few other small festivals. The second feature from director Michael Curtis Johnson, Savage Youth is set in small town America following a group of young people. Based on a true story, six young lives collide in the most horrific and twisted of ways. Described as a "brutal examination of doomed youth exiled to society's edge." The film stars Grace Victoria Cox, Tequan Richmond, Will Brittain, Chloe Levine, Mitchell Edwards, J. Michael Trautmann, and Sasha Feldman. Looks like yet another forgettable kids-are-crazy indie flick. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Curtis Johnson's Savage Youth, direct from YouTube: The lives of six troubled teens in a racially-divided town take a violent turn when drugs and broken hearts intermix.

As “Heathers” approaches the 30th anniversary of its U.S. premiere, television has made yet another failed attempt to pay homage to Michael Lehmann’s 1989 pitch-black high school comedy. The cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater inspired a whole genre of dark school comedies that tried to emulate the film’s quippy dialogue, heightened style, and satirical look at the grim realities of teenage life.
Add to that list of imitators The CW’s Archie Comics melodrama “Riverdale,” which presented its second musical episode on Wednesday. This time around, it featured the Broadway musical “Heathers,” which is a more heartfelt and navel-gazing adaptation of the movie. Even though the gothic “Riverdale” would seem like a good fit for this homicidal high school tale, the show managed to fail in honoring both the film and stage versions of “Heathers.”

When Netflix and Joe Berlinger’s Ted Bundy drama, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, hits the streaming service and select theaters later this year, it’ll be rated R for “disturbing/violent content, some sexuality, nudity and language.”
That’s the official word from the MPAA (h/t Film Ratings), confirming that Berlinger and Netflix have no intention of shying away from the grisly details of Bundy’s notorious offenses. Of course, the streaming platform is overly familiar with the infamous serial killer, having recently launched the four-part documentary series, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.
The big difference this time around is that, while Berlinger and Netflix are both involved, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is a narrative account of Bundy’s crimes with Zac Efron in the title role. And, if nothing else, he certainly looks the part.

Zac Efron has a natural charm that did him very well in his old teen heartthrob days, but with the upcoming Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the star uses his charisma to more unsettling ends, lending a certain likability to one of history’s most notorious serial killers.
Joe Berlinger’s film tells the story of Ted Bundy from the perspective of his girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins. What’s surprising about the pic’s first trailer, viewable above, is how light and comedic the tone is for a movie about a real life murderer, but then again, the point seems to be that Bundy didn’t have a sinister air about him. With Efron in the role, the killer comes across as a pretty amiable guy, making it all too believable that both Elizabeth and various members of the American public let themselves be deceived into thinking he was wrongly accused.

Parent-company Viacom rebranded Spike TV, earlier this year. The newly minted Paramount Network didn't get off to the best start though, and emblematic of its rough beginning is the rocky road its new Heathers TV show took to the air. First it was postponed, then rescheduled, and then cancelled, because of all the recent school violence. When Paramount couldn't find any takers, they decided to air nine of the 10-episode first season after all, with some content edited out. Are they just making back what money they can, or does this series stand a chance? Will Heathers be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.

Now that the Heathers TV series is finally making its way to air, it's releasing not one but two soundtracks to celebrate.
It's been a long and winding road for the Heathers TV show to make it to air.
The dark high school series based on the 1988 film of the same name was initially set to premiere on TV Land in 2017. Then Heathers made its way over to the newly launched Paramount Network instead. Paramount decided to table Heathers for the foreseeable future following a rash of school shooting in the U.S. Finally, Paramount gave Heathers a trim from 10 episodes to 9 and is set to release the series on October 25.
To celebrate finally getting to see the light of day, Heathers is getting not one but two original soundtracks on Lakeshore Records.

The “Heathers” TV series is finally going to make it to air.
The Paramount Network is planning to release the first season of the show ahead of Halloween, but with edits. Beginning Oct. 25, the cable network will air two episodes a night until Oct. 29. The 10-episode series has been condensed down to nine, with certain scenes edited out . The finale will be followed by the premiere of a new Heather’s themed-episode of “Lip Sync Battle” with series stars Melanie Field and Brendan Scannell.
The entire series will also be made available for streaming on the network’s app and website beginning Oct. 22.

Four months after Paramount Network scrapped its Heathers reboot, based on the cult movie, the Viacom cable network has scheduled the controversial series in a week-long marathon event beginning October 25.

If you've been waiting to watch the Heathers TV show, you may have a long wait ahead of you. Paramount Network has decided to scrap the "pitch-black comedy anthology series" before it ever saw the light of day. On the plus side, they are actively trying to find a new home for the show.A satirical reboot of the 1988 feature film of the same name, Heathers was described this way: Set in the present day, "good girl" Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) deals with a very different but equally vicious group of 'Heathers.' Heather Chandler (Melanie Field) is the unconventional leader of this popular high school clique and rules Westerburg High through fear, intimidation and amazing fashion sense. Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell) is Heather C's #1 sidekick and harnesses the Heather's power to destroy whoever he views as a total discount hobgoblin.

The planned series version of “Heathers” will not air on Paramount Network as planned, Variety has confirmed.
The move to scrap the series entirely comes after it was pushed from its original March 7 launch date in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February. It was then set to debut on July 10, but the debate around gun control and school shootings has not abated since, stoked again when another gunman killing 10 people at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, earlier this month.

Paramount Network has opted not to move forward with its Heathers reboot, Deadline has confirmed. The new Heathers was initially scheduled to premiere March 7, but was delayed out of respect to the victims, families and others affected by the deadly shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fl, which claimed 17 lives. The premiere was later set for July 10.
Paramount Network’s decision was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The satirical reboot of the 1980s cult film is set at a high school and contains violent scenes. The network “didn’t feel comfortable” airing the series, given the current climate, according to THR.
The original film, written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, centered on Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her rebel boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater) and their trials and tribulations dealing with the social order in high school.

Paramount Network and parent company Viacom have opted not to air the shelved “Heathers” adaptation, instead planning to shop the series elsewhere.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount development exec Keith Cox said some of the show’s content — guns in the classroom, the explosion of the school at the end the season — was deemed unfit to air on the younger-skewing network in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
“We had multiple meetings, and in the end, we didn’t feel comfortable right now airing the series and I’m not sure when there might be a time that we as a youthful brand at Viacom would feel comfortable,” said Cox.

Here’s a nasty rumor that’s actually true: After a delayed start, Paramount Network has decided not to air the upcoming Heathers TV reboot at all, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The network ultimately decided that the reboot’s satirical depiction of violence inside a high school “didn’t feel right,” Paramount Network president of development and production Keith Cox tells THR. The reboot was set to debut back in March, but was delayed in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Last month, a new July 10 premiere date was announced, but now the project has been scrapped entirely.

Paramount Network has set the new premiere date for their “Heathers” TV series for July 10. The announcement was made on social media Tuesday.
The series was originally set to release in March, but the Viacom-owned network decided to postpone the show in the wake of the Parkland shooting in Florida.
“Paramount Network’s original series ‘Heathers’ is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence,” the network said at the time. “While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.”

However, the pilot of the series, which is loosely based off the 1988 movie starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, was posted on its website back in February. It was subsequently taken down after the announcement to postpone.
The dark comedy is set in the present day and stars Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, Melanie Field as the body-positive mean girl Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as the genderqueer Heather Duke and Jasmine Mathews as the biracial lesbian Heather McNamara.
