It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

This story of two sisters, played by Josie Lawrence and Tanya Myers, returning home to sort their dead mother’s belongings avoids predictable genres, narratives and characters
British indie director Jon Sanders creates another of his low-key, thoughtful movies developed through improvisation; it is a static, eccentric chamber piece in some ways, but engaging and pregnant with ideas about mourning and grief. Josie Lawrence and Tanya Myers play Dot and Phoebe, two sisters who have come to the seaside home of their late mother, a singer and entertainer, to confront the daunting task of sorting out all her belongings and theatrical memorabilia.
This opens up painful memories and psychic wounds: however much they loved her, their mother was serially unfaithful to their father – once with a boyfriend of Phoebe’s – and now they don’t know how to feel. These themes of sexual transgression are strangely echoed in the present action,...

Named after the Mary Elizabeth Coleridge poem, Jon Sanders’ gently paced, thoughtful new film opens with a rendition of that poem in song by sisters Phoebe (Tanya Myers) and Dot (Josie Lawrence), with piano accompaniment by Tom (James Northcote). He has been looking after their mother’s house since her death, and now that they have arrived to deal with her possessions and say their final goodbyes to the place, the poem seems to speak to a personality which they both struggled to reconcile with and whose influence continues to shape their behaviour. “You thought because I had a mind that I could have no heart at all.”
Phoebe and Dot are performance artists and their manager, Monica (Anna Mottram), who is also a longstanding friend, is helping with the process of sorting out the house. She acts as a sounding board when they discuss old memories and their complex relationships with.

We have the trailer for HBO’s upcoming miniseries Catherine The Great starring badass Helen Mirren in a role she was pretty much born to play. Mirren portrays the longest reigning Empress of Russia as she makes her mark expanding the Russian Empire, and becoming the most powerful female leader in history. The series follows the later years of her reign, as well as her famous love affair with Grigory Potemkin.
Mirren is joined by Jason Clarke (Pet Sematary) as Grigory Potemkin, as well as Georgina Beedle, Thomas Doherty, Andrew Rothney, Antonia Clarke, Phil Dunster, Adam El Hagar, Georgina Hale, and James Northcote. The trailer looks solid, and I don’t know much about the history of Catherine the Great, so I will be checking this out for sure.

HBO miniseries Catherine the Great will star Helen Mirren as the Enlightenment-era Russian monarch.
Catherine the Great is headed to HBO in the U.S. and Sky in the U.K. as a four-part television miniseries starring Helen Mirren (who will also direct and executive produce). She plays the eponymous Russian empress, whose late-18th-century reign is widely considered the Golden Age of the old Russian monarchy and a time of rapid rise for the country. Indeed, the miniseries focuses on Catherine's political machinations, chronicling her rise to power and subsequent rule.
Mirren will be joined by co-star Jason Clarke, who plays Grigory Potemkin, a Russian military leader who came into Catherine’s favor as a friend and trusted advisor, going back to his support for her during the 1762 coup, which removed her husband, Emperor Peter III, from the throne, leading to her ascension. Here's the trailer for a new horror thriller called Patient Zero that tries to do something a little new and different with the zombie genre. The story follows a man played by Matt Smith who has the unique ability to speak "the Infected's new language" and leads the last survivors on a hunt to find Patient Zero and a cure. Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) is helping him on his journey. The big twist is, the infected don't feel they are diseased, they feel that they are the solution and the cure to get rid of the human infection.
This actually looks like a solid movie worth checking out. It was directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky and this is the synopsis:
In this new pandemic thriller, humanity is battling intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures born from a viral super-strain. After being bitten, human survivor Morgan (Matt Smith) realizes he is asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected,...

"Something new and smart is evolving..." Sony has debuted the trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Patient Zero, another attempt at mixing up the zombie genre with new ideas. The twist in this one is that one guy has the unique ability to speak "the Infected's new language" and leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Matt Smith stars as Morgan, the one with the skill of communicating with the undead/zombie/creatures but goes up against a formidable opponent when they find The Professor, played by Stanley Tucci. The cast includes Natalie Dormer, Clive Standen, Agyness Deyn, John Bradley, Colin McFarlane, Pippa Bennett-Warner, and James Northcote. As interesting as this "pandemic" film seems, there's so much of the usual tropes in this it doesn't seem like it really has anything new to offer. Here's the first official trailer for Stefan Ruzowitzky's Patient Zero,...

A director sinking in quicksand and actors in tears: is this the perfect example the old adage ‘suffering for your art? The first science fiction film since Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to be shot amongst Scotland’s unforgiving Outer Hebrides brings considerable pain for the cast and crew, but a stunning vista and a neuron-tickling

As is our annual tradition we like to peruse the credits of the SAG Ensemble nods to see who got left out despite their film's nomination. The Film Experience started this kind of analysis ten years ago when The Aviator had some really dumb exclusions and inclusions but lots of other sites now cover the injustice. We never get credit for starting this line of Norma Rae righteous anger but, that said, at least a lot of people have it now.
Did SAG think her face looked like she'd licked a homelessman's ass?
If you aren't familiar SAG uses a system whereby only actors with solitary title cards are official nominees for the Cast category. This means if you are famous in a bit part and have a good agent you are more likely to be an official nominee than the unknown who delivered a better performance in possibly a...

Few things are as certain to make Oscar voters prick up their ears as films which tell true tales of wartime heroism. So, this fall, one movie that almost everyone agrees will be a force to be reckoned with on the awards circuit is The Imitation Game, which focuses on British mathematician Alan Turing, who worked to unravel Nazi codes during World War II and was later prosecuted for the then-illegal act of homosexuality. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Turing, and everything that’s emerged about the film thus far paints it as a must-see. Now, our first look at the Sherlock actor in the title role has arrived.
The two images come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, which recently spoke with Cumberbatch about the film. Of Turing, the actor said, “He’s an exceptional man,” adding that, “I hope this film does justice to this unsung hero.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

BAFTA Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tops (photo: BAFTA 2014 nominees Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘American Hustle’) Nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards were announced a little while ago. As usual, British Academy of Film and Television Arts have placed their focus on Big English-Language Productions — i.e., Hollywood and Anglo-Hollywood fare. The nominations for this year's BAFTA film awards have been announced. And we've got them all for you right here...
In a live broadcast streamed this morning, the British Academy announced its nominees for this year's BAFTAs. We didn't have the time or the money to get hold of a tuxedo in time for the event, but we did manage to put on an extremely posh dressing gown.
The winners of the coveted metal BAFTA face will be announced next month, but for now, take a look at the list of nominees below, and see how your favourite films, actors and filmmakers of last year tallies with the Academy's. There are few genuine surprises among the choices, but we're guessing that Frozen's a shoo-in for best animation.

In a live broadcast streamed this morning, the British Academy announced its nominees for this year's BAFTAs. We didn't have the time or the money to get hold of a tuxedo in time for the event, but we did manage to put on an extremely posh dressing gown.

There are few genuine surprises among the choices, but we're guessing that Frozen's a shoo-in for best animation.

Charlotte Gainsbourg has gotten in the middle of a man sandwich, Lars Von Trier has been gagged while promising to invent a new genre of film, and the entire cast is doing god knows what in this official image. It's been a weird, bumpy ride, which seems about right for Lars von Trier's sex odyssey "Nymphomaniac" and today the first footage has arrived. Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a classic novel by any definition of the word, and has thus seen numerous cinematic adaptations, with everyone from Laurence Olivier to Ralph Fiennes having taken on the iconic role of Heathcliff, and directors such as Luis Buñuel having taken a crack at the material. Now Andrea Arnold, who turned heads with her raw take on urban poverty in 2009′s Fish Tank, has chosen to tackle the story as her follow-up project. Newcomer James Howson makes his acting debut in this film, joined by Kaya Scodelario, Paul Hilton, Amy Wren, and James Northcote. A full trailer for the movie, which Arnold co-wrote with Olivia Hetreed, has now been released, and can be seen below.
