The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.

Paris Hilton's dream of being a mom has come true. On Jan. 24, the 41-year-old heiress and husband Carter Reum welcomed their first child together, a boy, via surrogate. Hilton unveiled the news alongside a sweet photo of her holding the baby's hand on Instagram, though they have yet to reveal the name. While she's previously opened up about the couple's IVF journey and desire to have children, she hadn't shared a specific timeline.
Hilton and Reum, a venture capitalist and entrepreneur, have known one another for over 15 years, but they only reconnected in late 2019. The pair, who recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary, quickly fell in love as their friendship turned romantic. After over a year of dating, the two got engaged in February 2021 on a secluded island. They the tied the knot later that year, in November, in a lavish fairytale wedding. (Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Film: "The Leftovers"
Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max
The Pitch: Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta's metaphysical drama begins with a hell of a premise: One day, suddenly, 2 of the world's population disappears. The Sudden Departure, as it's called, is neither a clear-cut rapture event nor an easily explainable scientific one, but it is profoundly traumatizing. That trauma, which is both global and extremely personal, is the starting point from which one of the best TV shows of the 21st century builds.
Perrotta's novel serves as the series' starting point, and the first season follows two families in Mapleton, New York as they navigate their grief and aimlessness three years after the Departure. It's as bleak as it sounds,...

Three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte and fellow Oscar nominee Barbara Hershey (who received her nomination for The Portrait of a Lady) have signed on to star in the psychological thriller Eugene the Marine for director Hank Bedford.
Scripted by Bedford and Cesare Gagliardoni, Eugene the Marine will tell the story of
Gene, a widower and former Marine who finds his highly regimented life deteriorating after his son begins pressuring him to sell his longtime home. When a mysteriously familiar woman appears in his life, Gene starts to loosen up, until his nightmares and reality begin to blur.
Nolte is playing Gene, while Hershey takes on the role of Frances, that “mysteriously familiar woman”. The synopsis for the film on IMDb takes the story even further into thriller territory, saying that “a series of gruesome murders begin targeting the people around” Gene.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies were practically born to fail. The genesis of the first movie—where we would watch another Peter Parker origin story—was already deemed a bad idea among many fans when it was announced, and Sony didn’t change any minds over the next few years. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a mess and while it made money, it didn’t make the kind of money Sony wanted and all the big plans for a sequel and beyond fizzled. Next thing you know, there’s a Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he has his own Disneyland ride. The Marc Webb era of cinematic Spider-Man is thus a doomed duology sandwiched in-between the iconic Raimi Trilogy and the one who gets to hang out in the world-conquering superhero film franchise.

The MCU Spider-Man movies get a lot of things right. Romance is not one of them. Take for example the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Tom Holland’s Peter Parker says goodbye to Mj (Zendaya) before magic erases her memory of him. Mj stares into Peter’s battered face and says, “I love you.” Before Peter can respond in kind, Mj interrupts him. “Just wait,” she says behind tears. “Wait and tell me when you see me again.”

Exclusive: Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American rights to a pair of coming-of-age dramas: writer-director Alana Waksman’s debut feature We Burn Like This, and writer-director Anna Matz’s first feature, Love You Anyway. The digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group plans to release both titles across internet and satellite platforms on June 28.
Inspired by true events, the former film from Armian Pictures shows the inherited effects of historical trauma and the strength of survival and healing. When 22-year-old Rae (Madeleine Coghlan), a descendant of Holocaust survivors, is targeted by Neo-Nazis in Billings, Montana, her ancestors’ trauma becomes real. As antisemitism continues to rise in the community, we follow Rae on her journey to forgive herself, her mother and the broken world. We Burn Like This also stars Reservation Dogs‘ Devery Jacobs, as well as Kendra Mylnechuk, Angelo Rizzo, Casidee Riley and Megan Folsom.

We still don’t have much concrete information about Spider-Man 3 and certainly nothing to do with the plot has been revealed by Marvel/Sony yet, so we’re in the stage where every little announcement is a big deal. Case in point: we can now say that Tony Revolori will be back as Flash Thompson for the web-head’s next cinematic outing. This news comes our way via Deadline as per their article on the actor signing up with WME.
This isn’t exactly shocking news, of course, as Revolori had been a prominent supporting part of both 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, but he’s actually one of only a small pool of actors we know will feature in the threequel. Tom Holland will obviously be back as Peter Parker, and ditto for Zendaya as his girlfriend M.J. and Jacob Batalon as Peter’s best pal Ned.
