CBS has put in development Good Sam, a family medical drama from writer Katie Wech (BH90210), Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman and her Sutton St. Productions, and CBS Television Studios, where Sutton St. is under a deal.
Written by Wech, Good Sam centers on a talented yet stifled surgeon who embraces her leadership role after her renowned and pompous boss falls into a coma. When he awakens and wants to resume surgery, however, it falls to her to supervise this overbearing blowhard who never acknowledged her talents — and also happens to be her father.
Wech executive produces with Urman and Joanna Klein via Sutton St. Productions. CBS Television Studios is the studio.
Most recently, Wech was a writer on Fox’s summer drama series BH90210. Wech also wrote The Hypnotist’s Love Story, based on the Liane Moriarty book, which received a pilot order earlier at ABC last season.

CBS is developing a medical drama that hails from writer Katie Wech, Variety has learned.
Currently titled “Good Sam,” the series follows a talented yet stifled surgeon who embraces her leadership role after her renowned and pompous boss falls into a coma. When he awakens and wants to resume surgery, however, it falls to her to supervise this overbearing blowhard who never acknowledged her talents — and also happens to be her father.
Wech will write and executive produce. Jennie Snyder Urman and Joanna Klein of Sutton St. Productions will also executive produce under their overall deal with CBS Television Studios.
CBS is currently the only one of the Big 4 broadcast networks without a medical drama on the air, though they will debut the hospital-set comedy “Carol’s Second Act” later this month. CBS previously had the medical series “Code Black,” but that show ended last year after three seasons.

The CW has found its lead for its “Jane the Virgin” spinoff in Jacqueline Grace Lopez.
Lopez will play Estela, an up and coming art curator who has spent years playing it safe and coloring within the lines. But a shocking secret changes everything and forces her to live a double life.
The spinoff, titled “Jane the Novela,” is written by Valentina Garza, is described as a telenovela anthology series where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself. The first installment takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long.

The CW will close the book on “Jane the Virgin” this spring. But fans may get to dive into another chapter of Jane Villanueva’s world — or at least the one in her mind — if the spinoff pilot, “Jane the Novela,” gets picked up to series.
But does the possibility of a followup series mean other members of the “Jane” universe will be following creator Jennie Snyder Urman and star Gina Rodriguez (who will reprise her role as Jane as the narrator of the spinoff) over to the project?
“Probably not in the first year,” Urman told reporters while discussing the final season of “Jane” alongside Rodriguez, during the Television Critics Association’s press tour Thursday. “It’s imagined as an anthology, ’cause telenovelas are close-ended and it feels really exciting to be able to tell this kind of emotional, dramatic, scary, funny story all in one season.”

While the spinoff would not center around any existing Jane the Virgin characters, it would be helmed by writer Valentina Garza.
The Jane the Virgin spinoff is officially ago at The CW. The network announced that the newly-titled Jane the Novela is among four pilots it is picking up for the 2019-2020 TV season.
Vulture previously reported that the network was considering a Jane the Virgin spin-off, to carry on the spirit of Jane the Virgin after the show makes its final bow this television season. Now the details have emerged and they're pretty great.
Jane the Novela will be a telenovela-inspired anthology series. Each season of the show will be a different telenovela written by Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself. The first season of the show will take place at Napa Valley vineyard. That, my friends, is how you spinoff.

CBS has bought for development Family Emergency, a sibling/medical drama from Instinct developer/executive producer Michael Rauch, Jane the Virgin and Charmed’s Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS TV Studios where Rauch and Urman are based.
Written by Rauch, Family Emergency revolves around three sisters who often clash but always have each other’s backs work together in a busy ER, saving patients’ lives while navigating the complications of love, medicine and family.
Rauch executive produces with Urman and Joanna Klein.
CBS is the only Big 4 broadcast network without a medical drama currently on the air following the cancellation of Code Black. The network is looking to get back in the medical procedural game with Family Emergency and two other dramas in development, MD-1 and Nurses.
Rauch wrote the pilot for and executive produces CBS’ crime drama series Instinct starring Alan Cumming, which is set to return for a second season later this season.
