The Box Office last year was a phenomenal event. Led by Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s nuclear bomb thriller with Marvel witnessing its first-ever bomb, many miracles and misses made it an eventful year. While there were several incredible movies and features, it was ultimately the Barbemheimer that won the hearts of many.
2023’s Most Profitable Movies
Finishing first at the worldwide box office with $1.4 billion, Barbie won hearts even though the runner-up Oppenheimer bagged the most awards. Yet, when it came to the most profitable movie of last year, Chris Pratt’s animated flick, The Super Mario Bros Movie, left all movies behind.

Nintendo and Illumination are collaborating on Super Mario Bros 2, a follow-up to 2023’s huge hit animated movie.
Although reviews for last year’s The Super Mario Bros Movie were decidedly mixed, audiences turned up for the film in droves.
The Illumination Entertainment film, made in partnership with Nintendo, would prove to be hugely popular with audiences on its way to grossing $1.3bn at the global box office. That impressive haul meant the film would ultimately become the second highest grossing film of the year, with only Barbie earning more throughout the year.
In the wake of the film’s success, nobody was surprised when Nintendo announced that an adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda – its beloved and long-running fantasy series – was in the works. Rather than go for another animated feature however, The Legend Of Zelda is set to be live action and will be directed by Wes Ball, the...

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

A Look at Video Game Movie Adaptations With Highest Box Office Success (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Video game movie adaptations, especially video games with large fanbases, have always been a touchy subject. The ‘physics’ of video games is different; translating all that action and storyline into a film is not the most straightforward task, and when you factor in the expectations of an entire fanbase — the whole ordeal becomes downright daunting. Luckily, video game adaptations have taken off in the past decade, especially on TV in 2023 — and quite successfully! Their box office numbers prove that.
But, as mentioned above, these movies are brutal, considering their more fantastical elements and ‘animation.’ The latest addition anticipated for success in this category is the upcoming Minecraft, scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.
Minecraft has a star-studded cast, including Jason Momoa, Matt Berry, Danielle Brooks, and possibly Jack Black. Let’s just wait and see how it pans out.

Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

Box Office Records Broken By The Super Mario Bros Movie(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

“Ya know, I did go full method,” reveals Jack Black to us on Crew Call in regards to how he prepped for the role of Mega villain Bowser in Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie.
“I gained seven pounds, only eating Bowser-type food, which ironically is similar to my type of food: cheeseburgers, fries, just like De Niro would,” says the multihyphenate song and thespian man.
“It’s amazing how the research for Bowser was similar to what I was already doing, but, by God, I did it.”
At the top of today’s conversation with Black is how he came to craft the power ballad “Peaches” with Tenacious D producing partner John Spiker which Bowser booms in the $1.36 billion grossing animated movie. The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.

The Super Mario Bros Movie, which came out in April earlier this year, did exceptionally well at the box office. Actors like Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black lent their voices to the video game-based movie. The film recently debuted on one of the biggest streaming platforms, Netflix, and has garnered impressive views.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic have directed the film. The story revolves around Mario and his brother Luigi in the Mushroom Kingdom. The video game from which the movie is inspired was developed by Nintendo and is a successor of the arcade game Mario Bros. All the actors who gave their voices to bring the characters to life on screen also received handsome pay for their fun and exciting work.

Jack Black’s performance of the emotional piano rock ballad “Peaches” as Bowser leveled up the box office hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it released earlier this year. But the hit song almost never happened.
Black says when he signed onto the film, which hit theaters in April, music wasn’t part of the equation. “They had this idea late, late in the game, ‘What if Bowser sings a song?” Black tells The Hollywood Reporter, recalling a conversation with the film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. “They were like, ‘We got this little nugget.'” And they sent over this little 20-second song.”
Black, a Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate who has successfully combined acting, music and comedy throughout his 30-year career, initially thought, “this is not a musical — you can’t just pop this on me.” But the short demo was funny and likable enough that he called his producing partner,...

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

When Aaron Horvath started working on “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” he and his fellow director, Michael Jelenic, knew they wanted to avoid the mistakes that had plagued so many video game-based movies in the past. They wanted to make this movie a cinematic expression of a gameplay experience. “We knew that people coming into this movie love Super Mario as a character, but they also love Super Mario as an avatar,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent chat as part of our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). The two wanted to encapsulate the visceral emotions that players experience when playing the game. “For us, it was the challenge of blending the emotional experience of playing a game with the emotional experience of watching a movie. That sort of core approach informed us all throughout.”

One of the biggest hits of the year will soon be making its way to Netflix. The streaming service has announced that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" will be available to subscribers beginning Sunday, December 3. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly. The film is already available on Peacock, but, quite frankly, not nearly as many people subscribe to that service, so this is going to open it up to a much wider audience.

Let’s-a go! “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Universal and Illumination’s spring box office smash, is landing on Netflix in time for the holidays.
It will debut on the streaming service on Dec. 3, months after grossing $1.36 billion in global ticket sales. The animated adventure will still be available on Peacock, the platform owned by NBCUniversal, where it premiered in August. Universal struck a licensing deal to let “Mario” play on Netflix, which has far more subscribers than Peacock.
A collaboration between Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became a four-quadrant hit and the first movie of the year to cross the $1 billion mark. (“Barbie” has since joined the club.) It’s the second-highest-grossing movie of the year behind “Barbie” ($1.44 billion) as well as the most successful video game adaptation of all time. The animated highlights of 2023 thus far: Illumination/Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion globally, $574.9 million domestically) and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($689 million globally, $381 million domestically) were massive box office hits, proving that there is a hungry audience clamoring to see animation in theaters again.
However, Pixar/Disney’s “Elemental” and DreamWorks/Universal’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” were major box office flops: Pixar’s immigrant story about the elements trying to co-exist only mustered $154.4 million domestically (placing 20th on the studio’s list of features). However, it grabbed $490 million worldwide and subsequently became Disney+’s most-viewed movie premiere of the year. Meanwhile, DreamWorks’ coming-of-age Kraken comedy had the worst domestic showing in the studio’s history (with $15.7 million). This signaled that original animated content still has theatrical hurdles to overcome compared to franchises.

Exclusive: Senior television literary agent Melissa Orton-Cortez, most recently from CAA, has joined Adventure Media as a manager and partner alongside founding partners Chris von Goetz, James Robins Early and Aaliyah Williams.
This marks a reunion for Orton-Cortez and fellow former lit agents-turned-managers von Goetz and Robins Early who worked together for a decade at ICM Partners prior to the agency’s acquisition by CAA last year when von Goetz and Robins Early left and teamed with Williams to launch Adventure.
Meanwhile, Orton-Cortez transitioned to CAA where she had been for the past year. She was the highest profile departure in the recent round of layoffs at the agency, and a number of companies pursued her over the last couple of weeks. She opted to go with Adventure.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Adventure with my dear friends and colleagues,” Orton-Cortez said. “For the last year, I’ve...

One of the biggest surprises and most joyous moments of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was when Jack Black‘s villainous Bowser took to the piano and roared out the power ballad “Peaches.” The song was the funniest ballad we’d ever seen…. until “Barbie” came out.” That movie featured Ryan Gosling‘s Ken singing the tune “I’m Just Ken,” backed up by a bunch of other Kens including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
It’s strange, curious, and fantastic that two films have been released this year that feature hilarious ballads as key moments in their films for their story’s villains. As such, we expect both songs to compete for Best Original Song this year purely for their sheer popularity. Our odds chart for this category isn’t yet up, however. For now, we’re just focusing on the chances of these two songs only.

With Tuesday’s grosses, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed the $100M (13.74B yen) mark in Japan. In doing so, it becomes Universal’s top title ever there. In local currency, Mario overtakes Top Gun: Maverick as the No. 6 Hollywood film of all time in Japan, and is the No. 1 studio picture since the beginning of the pandemic.
Japan debuted Super Mario in late April with a huge $14.3M to score the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated studio movie, as well as the biggest Saturday box office in Universal history – topping Jurassic World Dominion. In only two days, Mario and Luigi led the fastest Universal film to reach 1B yen. That weekend’s result was Universal’s best ever start in the market.
The worldwide total is to date $1.357B. When excluding China, the total is $1.332B, just edging Frozen II outside that market.

Stars: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, Kevin Michael Richardson | Written by Matthew Fogel | Directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic
Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voice moustachioed plumbers Mario and Luigi in this animated adaptation of one of the most popular video games of all time. Produced by Illumination (home of the Minions) and co-directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film instantly eclipses all memories of the disastrous 1993 live-action movie and delivers fast-paced forgettable fun, much like the video game itself.
The Super Mario Bros Movie opens in what looks like 1980s Brooklyn, where plumbers Mario and Luigi are excited to begin their new plumbing business, after recording a commercial in which they adopt exaggerated Italian accents (thereby neatly getting around the problem of whether they’re going to speak like that for the entire movie). However,...
