As part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Onyx Collective unveiled its expanding slate of programming to come in the near future during their Storytellers Showcase – which notably includes two new projects, one from Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, as well as the highly anticipated sophomore documentary feature from music artist and filmmaker Questlove.
The company has acquired an untitled Sly Stone feature documentary from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, marking the artist’s second collaboration with the collective. Variety has learned the doc promises to examine the life and legacy of Sly and the Family Stone, the groundbreaking band led by the famous Sly Stone. The documentary aims to explore the rise, reign and fadeout of one of pop music’s most influential artists and, in doing so, tell a human story about the cost of genius.
Questlove will direct and executive produce, alongside Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman for Two One Five Entertainment Inc.

Sheba, a one-hour-scripted drama series, from Chantelle Wells (Yellowjackets), Azie Tesfai (Supergirl) and Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, is being developed by Onyx Collective for Hulu. The project was announced Saturday during Onyx Collective’s panel at the Sundance Film Festival.
Co-created by Wells and Tesfai, and written by Wells, Sheba explores the rise to power of the first queen on the continent of Africa as she seeks to unite the nation we now know as Ethiopia, making it one of the richest, most formidable kingdoms in the world. Inspired by true events, we follow Makeda into a world of danger, deceit and political intrigue as she is forced to step into a role that no one, including her, ever imagined as the Queen of Sheba.
Proximity Media will executive produce via their overall deal with Onyx Collective, along with Wells, Tesfai and Proximity Media’s Coogler, Kalia King, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler.

Exclusive: NBC is developing The Chase, a crime drama from Supergirl alumna Azie Tesfai and Universal Television.
Written and executive produced by Tesfai, in The Chase, when undercover CIA agent Robert falls for his target, Katherine, everything changes. Their Bonnie & Clyde escape goes sideways when they’re captured by the American government and forced to use their opposing assets and skill set to find some of the most wanted criminals in the world, all while learning the other isn’t who they thought.
Universal Television, a division of Universal Studios Group, is the studio.
Tesfai starred and wrote on The CW’s Supergirl as ex-military psychologist Kelly Olsen and DC comics superhero the Guardian. She was also the first Ethiopian person to ever portray a superhero on screen and made Arrowverse history as the first actor in a Greg Berlanti-produced series to also pen an episode on any of his shows.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Supergirl two-parter series finale.
It’s all or nothing for Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers and her Super Friends in the final hours of the CW’s Supergirl.
Kicking off with “The Last Gauntlet,” Supergirl picks up right were the previous installment left off – with Esme (Mila Jones) in Lex (Jon Cryer) and Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) possession. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Kara,” the series finale of “Supergirl.”
After six seasons of saving National City, “Supergirl” has come to a close — but not before Kara, a.k.a. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), had to make a number of life-changing decisions.
With villains Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) and Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) in-fighting at the start of the Nov. 9 series finale, titled “Kara,” the people of Earth became increasingly despondent as the bad guys sucked out their life force. Kara realized her entire mission was noble, but flawed: “We don’t need to be heroes,” she explained to her Super friends. “We need to be partners.”
The next step was empowering people to become the heroes of their own lives, which Supergirl conveyed worldwide thanks to a power assist from Brainy (Jesse Rath). In addition to helping humanity, it also drained Lex and Nyxly’s power,...

The Girl of Steel's story is coming to a close.
The CW has dropped plot details for the double-episode series finale of Supergirl, and it sounds out of this world.
The first hour is called "The Last Gauntlet" and finds Supergirl and her friends trying to save a loved one from the clutches of Nyxly and Lex.
"In the penultimate buildup to the season finale, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the super friends take drastic action after a loved one is kidnapped by Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) and Lex (guest star Jon Cryer)," the logline teases.
"An unlikely ally steps in to help the team," it continues, but who could this mystery character be?
We have no clue, but wouldn't it be fun if we got to see Clark helping his cousin save the world one last time?
We can hope!
Then again, the logline for the finale includes Tyler Hoechlin's...

J. Michael Straczynski is returning to outer space, with a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of Babylon 5 for The CW.
The original Babylon 5 debuted in 1993 and presented a future-history story covering the years 2257-2262, with each year corresponding to one season. In doing so, Babylon 5 is regarded as the first TV series to introduce viewers to the concept of a five-year arc, with a defined beginning, middle and end. Straczynski won over a dozen awards for his work on the series, including two Hugo Awards, the Saturn Award and the Ray Bradbury Award.

This Supergirl article contains spoilers for Season 6, Episode 12, “Blind Spots.”
Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12
Kelly makes her debut as Guardian in an impressive episode that actor Azie Tesfai (Kelly Olsen) co-wrote and David Ramsey directed. Ramsey previously directed a few great episodes of Arrow. Here, his direction gives the proceedings a feeling of gravitas – everything feels a bit more special, the shots more cinematic and creative. For Tesfai’s part, adding “writer” to her credits makes her the first Arrowverse actor to do so and adds a level of lived experience that grounds the episode in very real issues of race and privilege, even as Tesfai deftly weaves those themes into the fantastical aspects of the show.
The Ormfell Building that Orlando, Kelly, and others fought so hard to keep as affordable housing last episode crashes down, injuring Orlando’s brother Joey and many other residents in the Heights. Kelly is immediately invested,...

I've had a love-hate relationship with Supergirl over the years, but when I heard Azie Tesfai would be co-writing Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12, I was immediately interested again.
Thankfully, "Blind Spots" was one of my favorite episodes of the series, thanks to the deep dive into Kelly Olsen as she recognized nobody was helping the people of color following the building collapse.
If you watch Supergirl online, you know Kelly continues to evolve, becoming more likable by the episode, and it's because of her unwavering loyalty to the people who need her.
Fans have long wanted her to suit up as Guardian, and the nuances of the storyline continued to develop this character, who might well be the best in the Arrowverse.
It was heartbreaking to see Kelly feel so helpless as everyone she would usually ask for help was too busy to care about the people of color whose lives...

The following contains Supergirl spoilers
Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12
Out of all the Arrowverse shows, Supergirl has always been the most upfront and open about its politics. From explicitly positioning Kara Zor-El as a refugee in the expository narration that opens each episode to telling stories about immigration, police brutality, and LGBTQ rights, this is a show that takes the promise of hope, help, and compassion for all very seriously.
Unafraid to tackle potentially difficult or uncomfortable topics head-on, Supergirl frequently challenges the hearts and minds of its viewers with thorny big-picture questions about what being a hero really means and what the concept of universal justice should look like. And while Kara’s huge heart and hopeful, optimistic nature often make her a natural choice for a sort of in-universe moral compass, the show is equally willing to ask what happens when the community that most needs her help is...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12 “Blind Spots.”] The September 21 hour of Supergirl very much is Kelly Olsen’s time to shine — and what better episode for Azie Tesfai to co-write (with J. Holtham)? As Kelly officially debuts as Guardian, she focuses on how the fallout of imp Nyxly’s (Peta Sergeant) attack has affected the community and makes sure the Super Friends understand how important it is to acknowledge their blind spots and see how much the Heights need someone to fight for them. That’s what she’s going to do both in and out of the mask. The episode ends with Kelly and Alex/Sentinel (Chyler Leigh), who admits she understands she won’t ever fully understand what her girlfriend goes through. Kelly likens it to a valve being released and she can’t control the emotions pouring out and just asks her to “let me be and ...

National City’s new Guardian has finally arrived. Kelly Olsen picked up the shield on Tuesday night’s “Supergirl”, which was co-written by the actress herself, Azie Tesfai. And for those wondering, yes, she had exactly as much control and influence over the episode as you think.
“Our showrunners lost their mind and gave me control over so much,” Tesfai joked to TheWrap. “I don’t know why. I’m forever grateful to them. Because they were like, ‘Here, you want to decide the props and the set design and location and the casting of your episode and the suit?’ and they just let me. I had a list of things I wanted. And they all happened.”
That said, making those things happen did require some honest, uncomfortable conversations at various points. “Blind Spots” dealt with the racial inequalities happening in National City, and how unfortunately, Supergirl and her friends...

This week’s Supergirl leaned into uncomfortable conversations as Kelly Olsen tried to get the rest of the Superfriends to focus their attention on an underserved community in dire need of help — but found herself shouting into the void.
Tuesday’s episode, titled “Blind Spots,” centered around the Ormfell building collapse that made nearby residents, including young Joey (Aiden Stoxx), severely ill. The Arrowverse show’s titular hero meant well in her quest to find Nxyly — the Fifth Dimensional imp was a major threat to National City — but her focused efforts ignored the immediate crisis directly caused by this conflict:...

Azie Tesfai plays a pivotal part on-screen on Supergirl, but the star entered the writers' room this season to co-write Supergirl Season 6 Episode 12, airing Tuesday at 9/8c on The CW.
The highly anticipated installment focuses on Kelly as she realizes that no one is helping the people of color harmed when the Ormfell building explodes.
With many in the community injured and resources scarce, Kelly sets out to even the odds and restore justice to the fallen community.
In her journey to the writers' room, Tesfai was able to take some time away from filming.
"I did the writers' room for a month, all day, every day, which was incredible," Azie explained to TV Fanatic, dishing that she got to see first-hand how storylines are formed.
"Jay and I went off to write episode 12," but the journey begun in the writers' room, with the star saying that it became really personal for her.

National City’s next Guardian is coming. On this week’s episode of “Supergirl,” Kelly Olsen officially began her journey as a superhero, deciding to pick up where her brother left off, with the help of her already heroic girlfriend. And for series stars Azie Tesfai and Chyler Leigh, kicking off that adventure together hit on a lot of levels.
That said, one of the most important levels for Tesfai was that this move is truly Kelly’s own decision. Alex may be wholeheartedly supporting the move, but she doesn’t suggest or lead Kelly to it. “I love that the choice to step into her power for change as a superhero came from Kelly,” Tesfai told TheWrap.
What prompts her to make that choice? Well, since leaving Obsidian North, Kelly’s gotten a job with social services (a full day of training was the reason given for her absence...

Kara may be back on Earth, but she's changed.
The CW released a trailer for the last-ever episodes of Supergirl, and it shows our hero in a particularly vulnerable state.
While the events of the Phantom Zone weigh heavily on her, she's also being saddled with a fear she can't seem to shake.
“What if that fear never goes away?” she asks Alex in the freshly released clip.
The good news is that Kara's friends will all be along for the ride as she embarks on a mission to save the world, once and for all.
The issue plaguing everyone, however, is that the new villain is destroying the Earth's oceans in a similar vein to the way Krypton perished all those years ago.
