This summer, Marvel Comics will relaunch the X-Men family of titles in what's being called the "From the Ashes" era. First up is the new X-Men series that will see Cyclops lead a new team, with Magneto serving as what writer Jed MacKay describes as their "spiritual centre."
Talking to IGN, he explains, "This is very much a series about rebuilding. It's a series about finding your place in a world that you thought you'd left behind, and essentially taking the wreckage of something and trying to build something new from it, which we see sort of thematically and also quite literally."
"I mean, the X-Men are flying around in the Marauder, too. They're living in a Sentinel factory that they have salvaged - a former Orchis facility that they now live in," MacKay adds. "So this sort of scavenging and repurposing of what came before in order to construct...

After spending years as a respected leader of the sovereign mutant nation Krakoa, Cyclops is back on the run. With Krakoa destroyed and humanity ready to oppress mutants again, Cyclops has gone back home to Alaska to refresh and regroup.
And yet, things have never been better for Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops. The upcoming From the Ashes relaunch will force the X-Men back into the world after the end of Krakoa in the Fall of X storyline, with a new X-Men book with Cyclops in the lead.
“We wanted to start with Cyclops and wanted to bring him back to Alaska,” X-Men writer Jed MacKay tells Den of Geek during an exclusive interview at SXSW. “And from there we started thinking what his mission would be moving forward because he’s Cyclops, he always has the mission.”

The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.
"Extraordinary X-Men" by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Set in Chicago, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost...

Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.

A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production last year with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Today The Hollywood Reporter posted an interesting article about how Red Sonja was able to escape from development hell… and it basically boils down to a director’s enthusiasm for the material and a producer’s desperation to get the movie made.
The 50-something Bassett says she has been borderline obsessed with Red Sonja since her childhood, and “I cursed every time they announced someone else (as director). I kept telling them, ‘When you change again, let me know.’” And they did let her know when Soloway...

James Gunn and Peter Safran will present their Dcu plans to Warner Bros. Discovery in two months. That means Wbd is rolling into 2023 with a bold new path carved by two creatives who’ve already proven their worth time and again. Could this be the end of the studio’s seemingly directionless flailing and dodging of Snyderverse fans? I hope so because I want nothing more than for DC to get a shot in the arm from Gunn and Safran’s grand plan.
While fans may have to wait for the duo to share their 10-year outline with the general public, Gunn is teasing character additions regularly. Gunn’s tweets are not a confirmation of projects being in the works. Still, it’s worth noting he’s shared images of DC’s Lobo and Mr. Terrific. Is Gunn not-so-secretly revealing characters he’s hoping to bring to the Dcu, or...

This article contains She-Hulk spoilers
Apart from Wanda Maximoff, few people have had as much trouble in love as Jennifer Walters in the Marvel Cinematic. Across eight episodes of She-Hulk, we’ve watched Tatiana Maslany’s hotshot lawyer be mocked as little more than a “specimen” by a rogue’s gallery of mediocre males. However, in October 6’s “Ribbit and Rip It,” we saw Jen stick a middle finger to the patriarchy with a deep cut to toxic tropes in pop culture.
Apart from winks like Eternals’ Ikaris bring compared to Superman, the MCU tends to avoid Easter eggs to DC. She-Hulk already walked the line with a nippled costume from Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews) being a potential nod to the infamous Batman & Robin suits, but if you were listening carefully, you might’ve heard a Green Lantern Easter egg. After doing the deed with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jen...

“Batgirl” actress Ivory Aquino is hoping Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav might reconsider his decision to scrap the superhero film, considering the outpouring of support for the movie since its demise this month. In an open letter on Twitter, Aquino asked Zaslav to “consider releasing” the film, because really, Batgirl has “always been the underdog.”
Earlier this year, Aquino was cast in the film as Alysia Yeoh, a trans woman and roommate of Barbara Gordon’s (Leslie Grace) who was introduced in the “Batgirl” comics by writer Gail Simone and artist Ardian Syaf in 2011. Aquino’s character would have marked the first transgender character ever in a DC Comics film.
Her thoughts came in response to reports of “Batgirl” screenings happening on the Warner Bros. lot this week, said to be exclusively for people who worked on the movie as well as representatives and executives. Those reports also indicated that,...

Mel Gibson's "Braveheart," a loose biography of the 13th century Scottish revolutionary William Wallace, was released in 1995 to much critical laud, with many critics and fans alike praising its dynamic, bloodied look at Scottish history. Actual historians, meanwhile, had a collective aneurysm over how inaccurate screenwriter Randall Wallace's view of history was. Screenwriter Wallace (no relation to William) took many of his cues from a 1488 poem called "The Wallace," written by Blind Harry. "The Wallace" was already an exaggeration of history, and subsequent poems and tales about William Wallace tended to expand the myth rather than seek accuracy. The inaccuracies and historical fudging committed by "Braveheart" is a matter of public record, and Wallace has said that the Blind Harry poem "spoke to [his] heart" more than it was accurate.

Jessica Jones is having blackouts and doesn’t know why. Matt Murdock is pressuring her to help a former victim of her arch nemesis, the Purple Man. Hammerhead and his goons are squeezing the owner of her favourite coffee shop for protection money and that’s just for starters. In court Murdock is trying to help Maria Snyder convince the judge the Purple Man told her to burn her house down (with her family still inside) and Jessica learns that he may still be just as much of a threat to her. And then multiple variants of Jessica turn up!

The Gotham vigilante was patronised in The Lego Batman Movie, paralysed in The Killing Joke and underwritten in Batman and Robin. Will fans never get to see Gail Simone’s nuanced and modern version of the character?
Are they really cancelling Batgirl? Who does that, given the troubled history of Barbara Gordon’s Gotham vigilante in comics and on the big screen?
These are the questions DC fans will be asking this week after it was reported that Warner Bros is declining to release a nearly completed movie by the Ms Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and with Leslie Grace in the title role, despite the film being in post-production. Apparently it’s all part of a massive tax write down.

After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.
Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. But it’s not expected to shower Hall H with an embarrassment of riches like it did in 2019; some sources believe Marvel is saving it all up for Disney’s fan convention D23 during the second weekend of September, specifically in regards to new projects. There’s still stuff we haven’t seen, specifically the Fantastic Four reboot, Mahershala Ali in The Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (due May 5), The Marvels (July 28, 2023) and The Mutants.

Updated with Saturday schedule: After a two-year in-person hiatus due to Covid, San Diego Comic-Con is raging back with a big footprint by streaming, TV and, well, as far as big screen feature films, let’s just say they’re creeping back.
Marvel will make some big waves with its upcoming new movies (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Disney+ series (She-Hulk), but it will keep some powder dry for D23 in early September. Dwayne Johnson will be booming with New Line/DC’s Black Adam, along with Shazam: Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi. However, while Sony will be skipping as the Spider-Verse animated sequel is set for next year. Paramount will be giving fans an early look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. And there’s Kevin Smith with Clerks III.

This is one of those books that knew it would be taking our money from the very start. Firstly, its multiverse stuff. That’s gold at the moment. Secondly, it’s got everyone’s favourite bad girl Jessica Jones as the star. I suspect we’ll be seeing her show up on Disney Plus in the not-too-distant future, so Marvel have a lot invested in her, and this book is a decent start. Lastly, what a great creative team. Gail Simone, who has never met a female character she can’t write the hell out of, and Phil Noto, who uses such beautifully clean lines in his art. This is a triple home run in theory, but is it in practice?
So, the main premise here is going to be seeing Jessica Jones through a prism of multiple universes.

In an exclusive newsbreak, Deadline has announced that the upcoming "Batgirl" movie has added Ivory Aquino to the cast, and those who speculated the character calling for "Alanna" was actually for the comic book character Alysia Yeoh have been proven correct. Aquino joins the cast which includes Leslie Grace ("In the Heights"), J.K. Simmons ("Spider-Man: No Way Home"), Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy"), Michael Keaton ("Batman"), and Jacob Scipio ("Bad Boys for Life"). Aquino is playing Barbara Gordon's best friend, Alysia Yeoh, with the film based on the "Batgirl" DC comics from writer Gail Simone and artist Ardian Syaf.

Barbara Gordon has officially found her roommate.
Ivory Aquino has been cast in the HBO Max feature film “Batgirl” as Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of the titular superhero, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon (Leslie Grace).

Please don’t be a cheap cash-in, please don’t be a cheap cash in. These were my first thoughts when I saw this book announced. Suicide Squad books and merch aplenty I expected, with the critics loving the James Gunn movie, but a glut of books with no merit doesn’t do anyone any good. Having two such high profile creative guys on the book, in the form of Azzarello and Maleev was promising, and having such a wildcard villain as The Joker also looked good. Significantly less worried now, in fact this now looked most definitely kinda’ fun. I’ve been a fan of The Suicide Squad going back to the John Ostrander reboot in the late Eighties, and I have the entire 66 issue run of that, plus the Annual and Special. Over the weekend, comic book writer Gail Simone shared an interesting anecdote on Twitter about Hollywood, the industry’s growing need for inclusion, and the Fast and Furious movies.
“I had a very powerful Hollywood insider say that the success of the Fast and Furious franchise had a bigger effect on movie casts getting diversified than ‘all the social media complaints combined,’” Simone wrote. “This happened. If he was being hyperbolic I don’t know. But even if it’s just a commonly held belief at the top levels, it’s interesting to consider. It punches [holes] in the beliefs of both conservative and liberal commentators.”
Indeed, it is very interesting to consider, particularly on the social media platform which has become famous for dictating the direction of “discourse” around popular media on any given day. It also brings sharp attention to the unique vitality of the Fast and Furious franchise.

The first actual trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is here, and it’s drastically different from its cinematic predecessor. Stylistically, it has plenty of Gunn’s hallmarks, drawing on some of the most obscure, quirky characters in the DC Universe, it’s plenty violent, it’s got a cool tune and it’s certainly less shy about things like profanity than the director was allowed on his Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios.
But the biggest surprise doesn’t come in John Cena’s Peacemaker expounding on his willingness to eat as many penises as liberty requires, and it’s not Idris Elba’s Bloodsport in some really cool battle armor, or Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn misbehaving just as Harley should. Nor is it in the reveal of Peter Capaldi’s Thinker, or even the wonderful CGI creation of King Shark (who appears like...

It’s becoming increasingly probable that the Dceu as it stands will be largely wound up with Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League and the universe reset with The Flash utilizing some version of Flashpoint. However, it’s possible that the DC superteam’s exploits will receive a continuation in another medium.
Speaking at Ccxp while promoting American Vampire 1976, comic book writer Scott Snyder (no relation) stated that he had been asked to “help with the comic adaptation and expansion of the [Justice League Snyder Cut] mythology that [Zack Snyder] is doing on [HBO Max].” While he turned down the request due to work commitments (and half-jokingly saying that he wanted to avoid further confusion between himself and the director), that certainly doesn’t preclude the offer from being extended to someone else steeped in DC lore, such as Geoff Johns, Gail Simone or Marv Wolfman.

After Suicide Squad 2 failed to find momentum under director Gavin O’Connor and writer Todd Stashwick, the studio brought in Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn to breathe new life into Suicide Squad 2. The sequel to the 2016 film is now known as The Suicide Squad, which would seem to indicate that they’re looking to distance themselves a little from the first film. Understandable, as despite it’s nearly $750 million global box office haul, it wasn’t particularly beloved by critics, and appeared to be the victim of some hasty editing to counter the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice backlash.
But now with Gunn as both writer and director, The Suicide Squad will likely be a very different film. Gunn has said on social media that he hopes to deliver something more along the lines of the late ’80s action movie with superpowers that the classic...

Jim Lee, the legendary comic artist turned publisher turned DC Comics executive, has spent most of his social distancing putting up huge for local comic shops. He’s been furiously sketching some awesome characters, then auctioning them off on eBay. The Binc Foundation, the charity that supports book stores in times of crisis, has seen an influx of cash thanks to the work of the comics great, to the tune of $230,000 so far. Previous sketches have been of Cyborg, Darkseid, Bane, Grifter and Zealot, and others.
And this time, he’s doing it with another Batman villain (and Harley Quinn confidante) Poison Ivy. Lee first spent time with Ivy on the celebrated Batman: Hush story, and this is a stunning look at the character.
Lee has raised an enormous sum for Binc – by the time this auction closes, he will have likely surpassed the $250,000 pledged by DC Comics to the charity,...

With the temporary suspension of new weekly print comics coming out from all the big publishers, they are increasingly starting to appreciate just how important digital now is to their business model. Digital books aren’t affected by lockdowns, distributor woes, postal issues or bad weather and, best of all, are cheap to put out and are delivered instantly. I suspect that once this Covid-19 lockdown has come and gone, the industry may well never look the same again. Digital books will no longer be looked upon as a nice little bolt on to the main print line, but eventually will Be the main line, with print books as the bolt on. Sink or swim time for the industry I do believe.

This The Flash review contains spoilers.
The Flash Season 6 Episode 16
Annnnnd….we’re back! After The Flash had to go on a production hiatus because of this little pandemic you may have heard of that affects everyone from regular folks to CW TV superhero stars, which (among other things) caused this episode to get pulled from the schedule for a month, the series has returned. More importantly, it returns with a strong episode, and in fact its weightiest one since the conclusion of Crisis on Infinite Earths. I was starting to worry that without the inherent ticking clock of that Crisis-teasing newspaper headline that The Flash was going to run out of gas. But “So Long and Goodnight” is the kind of episode that proves me wrong.
So what did this episode do right? Well…by finding time for its entire cast for starters And by remembering to put Barry in costume.

It’s fair to say that most of the references and Easter Eggs in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” have been discovered since The CW event aired, while we’ve also learnt a lot about what might have been for the episodes. With the special currently being run again during the lockdown though, fans might spot some additional moments that were missed the first time around. However, according to The Flash writer Sterling Gates, there is one Easter Egg that no one’s spotted yet.
Gates, who’s an executive story editor on The Flash and co-wrote part three of the “Crisis,” revealed today on Twitter that his favorite reference hasn’t been picked up.
Also, no one has found my favorite DC Easter Egg yet.

If we’re being honest, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has had a bit of an interesting release. Having hit theaters a couple of days ago, the film premiered to critical praise. It’s currently sitting at 81% with a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and our very own Matt Donato gave it four stars out of five in his review.
Despite the acclaim from both critics and fans alike though, the Dceu’s latest is not doing so hot at the box office, and is even on track to have a worse opening weekend than 2011’s Green Lantern. Granted, these numbers are solely based on the past two days, so things can always change down the line, but it’s a bit baffling nonetheless. And while it seems to be a hit for those who took the time (and paid the money) to go see it,...

Wonder Woman has had quite the renaissance in recent years, and as one of the Big Three (with Superman and Batman) it is thoroughly deserved. You don’t get continually published since 1941 unless you have something that clicks with readers after all. She first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941, graduated to her own book with Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, and has never looked back since. She has gone through several’ fad’ phases down the years, such as the depowered white jump suit era (yikes), and has sometimes struggled with getting enough readers to pick up her book. Historically, though, having a female character they are trying to aim at girls but written by middle aged men, doesn’t really work, and also ends up alienating the male audience. Most self respecting teenage boys back in the day wouldn’t pick up...

Last week, Karen Gillan made it known that she wouldn’t mind playing Batgirl in the Dceu. The Avengers: Endgame star isn’t actively starting a campaign to get herself cast, but the comment she made to Brazilian site Omelete has caused folks to sit up and realize that, wait, the Scottish actress would actually be a perfect fit to bring Barbara Gordon to life on the big screen. She’s got the look, the acting chops and we know that she’s great at action from her roles as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nebula and Jumanji‘s Ruby Roundhouse.
Still not convinced? Well, then maybe this artwork will change your mind. Digital artist Andrea Giglio created the below piece imagining Gillan in the Batgirl costume following her revelation that she’d be interested in the part. With the Gotham City skyline behind her, the image sees Gillan as...

Well, you certainly can’t say that Crisis on Infinite Earths is anything less than ambitious. Osric Chau will help save the DC multiverse as Ryan Choi in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
One of the subtle joys of Legends of Tomorrow (a show famous for its subtlety) is how when watching the actors inhabit their characters, it seems like everyone is good friends and enjoying everyone else’s company. The same is true for the rest of the Arrowverse - these casts have been working together for years. So to step in to Crisis on Infinite Earths now, as Arrow is ending and universes are dying left and right, must be a challenge for any actor. “It's a little daunting at first, just the idea of stepping into something that's so well established, but I kind of had that same experience on Supernatural when I came on,” Osric Chau says about his new role as Ryan Choi, the Atom, for the big, universe-shattering Crisis crossover.

G. Willow Wilson looks back at her time writing Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman has been inspiring readers and saving the world since 1941. Over the decades the Themysciran Princess has been a pillar of the DC Universe, her adventures and bravery a moral compass in an often bleak, grim, and gritty world. Like all of comics' longest running characters, Diana Prince has been helmed by many different creative teams, and most recently writer G. Willow Wilson took the reins of the character alongside an impressive roster of artists like Cary Nord, Tom Derenick, and more. As Wilson exits the title to head over to the world of Sandman and the Dreaming, Den of Geek sat down to talk to the co-creator of Ms. Marvel about her time writing the iconic hero and the lessons that it taught her.

It’s not easy being the greatest female icon in the history of American comic books but, even after more than seven decades on the job, the Amazon princess they call Wonder Woman handles that burden with noble grace and singular determination.
That’s one way to interpret the striking, just-released cover artwork for the upcoming, 96-page, prestige-format, 750th issue of Wonder Woman from Burbank-based publisher DC Comics. The milestone issue will hit shelves at brick-and-mortar retailers on January 22, the same day it lands on the virtual spinner racks of online retailers.
The image evokes the Hellenic imagery of mighty Atlas hefting the world on his Titan shoulder and it was illustrated by Catwoman writer/artist Joëlle Jones, just one of the many DC stars who made contributions to commemorative issue.
Announced interior artists include Colleen Doran, Jesus Merino, Elena Casagrade, Gabriel Picolo, and Wonder Woman Rebirth illustrator Nicola Scott.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...

Birds of Prey will bring classic DC heroines like Black Canary and Huntress to the big screen for the first time. However, Harley Quinn will be the leader of the team and the focal point of the film, as made abundantly clear by the recent first trailer for the movie. Batgirl fans are bound to feel a bit disgruntled, then, that Barbara Gordon – the original head of the Birds in the comics – has been snubbed for the Dceu version.
The good news is that Warner Bros. will soon make up for this oversight with multiple films starring Babs in the future of the franchise. This promise comes from comic book writer Gail Simone, the scribe most closely connected with both the Birds and Barbara. She responded to a fan worried about the lack of Batgirl in BoP on Twitter and assured them that there’s “a lot of love” coming for the heroine.

Marvel's Black Widow movie features Taskmaster as its main villain. Here's everything you need to know about him.
With Marvel's McU Phase 4 rapidly approaching, it’s almost surprising that it has taken this long for the Taskmaster to show his skull-covered face. Taskmaster has been taking on various Marvel heroes since 1980 and has gone on to star in two miniseries while getting the occasional supporting character role. He’s on that border where it was hard to tell whether he’d show up in the movies or get relegated to TV, showing up as a villain on Agents of Shield or something from the Defenders’ neck of the woods on Netflix. But now we know he'll be the villain of the Black Widow movie, and we got our first look at him in the trailer.

Black Canary, Huntress, and Harley team up in a new Birds of Prey series from Brian Azzarello and Emanuela Lupacchino.

As we’re unlikely to get a full-on Marvel/DC crossover anytime soon, like we’ve had in previous decades, due to the intense multimedia rivalry between the two companies, fans get a kick out of it when the comics obliquely reference the other side’s heroes, allowing us to put together the crossovers in our heads instead. Lion Forge was founded back in 2011 with a mission in mind — hard-wiring a new superhero universe with the principles of cultural diversity and representation that would be reflected by the ranks of both its characters and its creators. Adding Simone, and accomplished superhero specialist and an outspoken voice on women’s issues, into that mix brought the promise of big things but the details have been scant. That changes today.
