I contend the world changed more between 1875 and 1900 than any other quarter-century in recorded history. From Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone to Thomas Edison’s phonograph and motion pictures, the masses were suddenly able to communi9cate and entertain in new ways. The world shrank and night was eliminated thanks to the light bulb.
It’s a fascinating period and one that has been overlooked until recently. First came, Graham Moore’s The Last Days of Night, a historical novel from 2016 that carefully detailed the battle between Edison and George Westinghouse for setting the electrical standard for America. Of course, alternating current won, but not without losses on both sides.
A year later, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon tackled the same subject matter in The Current War, pitting Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) against Westinghouse (Michael Shannon). In both stories as in history, the mad genius of Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), is a naïve innocent,...

Many people probably told the filmmakers behind “The Current War”—finally being released in a director-approved edit after another cut preferred by Harvey Weinstein received a poor reception at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival—that a story about the debate over whether the standard for electricity should be direct or alternating current would not make for particularly engaging drama. If so, those people were mostly right. The figures behind the AC/DC war of the 1880s and ‘90s were certainly larger than life, and so that is where screenwriter Michael Mitnick and director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon put most of their energies.

It’s rare that a movie gets a new lease on life without having to become a cult classic. About two years ago, The Current War made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, hoping to be a major Oscar player for The Weinstein Company. However, a combination of middling reviews, the lack of a budget for an Oscar campaign, and of course, the fall of Harvey Weinstein, contributed to the flick sitting on the shelf. Now, with a new cut and a new distributor, the project is seeing the light of day, rechristened as The Current War: Director’s Cut. Most who have seen both versions declare this a vast improvement, but is it worth your time? Read on to find out! The film is an historical drama as much as it is a biopic, focused on a battle of wills between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, with...

The final weekend of October will be a quiet one at the box office. Between the release of “Zombieland” and “Maleficent” sequels last weekend, the continued success of “Joker,” and a crowded November release slate starting with a new “Terminator,” the major studios are mostly sitting out of this weekend.
But one film that will be released wide this Friday comes with a very long and turbulent road to theaters. “The Current War,” Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s biopic about the corporate battle over America’s first electric grid, will finally be released after it was dropped by the now-defunct Weinstein Company.

A casualty of Harvey Weinstein’s downfall, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s thought-to-be awards-contender that was rushed for a lukewarm Tiff reception in 2017 finally sees the light of day. Retitled The Current War: Director’s Cut due to the director’s extensive revisions (thanks to producer Martin Scorsese’s contractual ability to block the other version’s release), the film remains narratively identical with effective pacing tweaks that fix some of what gave me pause two years ago. The most noticeable change is the slight increase in screen-time for Nicholas Hoult’s Tesla to help provide the character his deserved due alongside the two leads (Benedict Cumberbatch’s Edison and Michael Shannon’s Westinghouse).
I liked the film with reservations back then and enjoyed it a bit more now. Hardly a different film, it exists as a stronger variant of what already was. Whether that’s enough to win over its detractors remains to be seen,...

The celebrity-wannabe energy infusing contemporary culture’s understanding of tech executives, the most recent generational coat of paint applied to the corporate domination of everyday life, has found an unusual and ill-fitting home in “The Current War: Director’s Cut,” the latest film from director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”).
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2017, where it was received with a collective shrug, the film was then caught in limbo as its original distributor, The Weinstein Company, dissolved in the aftermath of sexual assault charges brought against company co-head Harvey Weinstein (whose producing credit here has been removed). While waiting for a proper theatrical release, Gomez-Rejon re-edited the film, hence its new colon-necessitating but not confusion-abating title.
Not that there’s anything confusing about this real-life 19th century drama. The story of Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon...

The tumultuous journey of Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Current War–starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Tuppence Middleton, Matthew Macfadyen, and Nicholas Hoult–is looking for a happy end. The former Weinstein Company film premiered back at Tiff 2017, but has now been re-edited (reportedly adding five scenes yet cutting the film by 10 minutes) and picked up by the newly-formed 101 Studios. Ahead of an October release, a new trailer has arrived for the film, which tells the story of Edison, Westinghouse, and Tesla’s formation of our modern-day electrical system.
“I was getting the film back and had six to eight weeks and the chance to shoot one extra day. I was never more prepared for anything in my life,” the director told Deadline, also revealing he added a new score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans. “A lot of actors needed to be there on one...

101 Studios has released an official new trailer for the Martin Scorcese-produced thriller, “The Current War,” offering a glimpse into the dramatic 19th century battle over electricity that became known as the “war of the currents.”
The film, which is a dramatization of real-life events, will follow the tumultuous journey of Thomas Edison, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, as he attempts to use his DC technology to introduce light to Manhattan. However, his initial efforts are obstructed when businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and his partner Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) rival the inventor with Tesla’s own AC electrical current.
In the new trailer, it’s clear that the film won’t hold back in the portrayal of the historical corporate feud. In the teaser, Edison says, “This is a battle of the greatest minds of America,” to which Westinghouse threatens, “If you want to be remembered, it’s simple: Shoot a president.

The fight for the future is here in the latest trailer for “The Current War.” But instead of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange, he’s playing another icon, Thomas Edison, who faces off against his greatest rivals in George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.
This latest look at “The Current War” is the first since the film was scooped up by 101 Studios for release. The biopic starring Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Holland played at Toronto in 2017 and was in limbo after The Weinstein Co. let it go as part of the company’s bankruptcy proceedings.
But the new look at the film plays up the competition between Edison, Tesla and Westinghouse more so than the genius behind the men, and how the fight over electricity shaped our society.

By my count, Luca Guadagnino has directed a dozen short films, both documentaries and commercials. This year’s “The Staggering Girl” marks the director’s first invitation from Cannes. He sent the 35-minute, 35mm short — financed by Rai Cinema and Valentino — to his friend Paolo Moretti, who promptly invited it to Directors Fortnight. “I’m a Venice man,” said Guadagnino. “I am a nouvelle vague person, this is my first time. I felt at home. Maybe this is the beginning of a new phase for me.”
The admitted workaholic loves shooting shorts between longer projects, as a way to stay creative, playful, and busy as well as enabling him to afford directing films such as the Oscar-winning “Call Me By Your Name.” His most beloved work could still see a sequel with the October publication of Andre Aciman’s sequel, “Find Me.” “We have the rights, it’s all cool,...

The Current War finally is ready to plug in. The film starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon as his rival George Westinghouse is set to open October 4 as the first release from 101 Studios.
The pic had been set for a Thanksgiving 2017 release via the Weinstein Company before it filed for bankruptcy protection and was sold to Lantern Entertainment amid the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The Current War will bow in select theaters before going wide October 11.
It’s the story of the cutthroat competition that literally lit up the modern world. Edison is the celebrity inventor on the verge of bringing electricity to Manhattan. On the eve of triumph, his plans are upended by charismatic businessman Westinghouse, who believes he and his partner, the upstart genius Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), have a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify America. As Edison and Westinghouse grapple for who will power the nation,...

Luca Guadagnino insists that his utterly gorgeous and generally insipid new 37-minute film is not a commercial. According to the opening titles — which for unknown reasons are presented in the signature style of Woody Allen — “The Staggering Girl” is actually a medium-length art movie “based on Valentino Haute Couture.” Never mind that the short was produced by the monolithic fashion house, or that each of the many spectacular looks gets its own citation in the credits, or that even the most fleetingly glimpsed of the outfits on display have more depth than the human characters who wear them. Perhaps Guadagnino has never heard of the term “branded content.”
Premiering at the only festival on Earth that’s chic enough to support it, “The Staggering Girl” is inevitably both an overlong commercial and a medium-length art movie. That being said, if Guadagnino continues to insist that it’s one or the other,...

Luca Guadagnino is set to start shooting his first TV series, “We Are Who We Are,” for HBO and Sky, “in a couple of weeks,” the director of “Call Me by Your Name” told Variety. Guadagnino is currently in Cannes with his star-studded short “The Staggering Girl,” which world-premieres Friday in Directors’ Fortnight.
“We Are Who We Are” will focus on “a group of American teenagers on a U.S. military base in Italy,” Guadagnino said, particularly two 14 year olds, a boy and a girl named Fraser Wilson and Caitlin Harper. After being in limbo for a little more than a year, “The Current War” has been picked up by David Glasser’s new company 101 Studios.
The production company, which Glasser launched in January, bought the rights to the orphaned The Weinstein Co. project for $3 million.
Glasser said in January that they were negotiating for the rights to the film.
“The Current War” stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, and follows the story of the cutthroat competition between Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Shannon) over whose electrical system would power the new century. Backed by J.P. Morgan, Edison dazzles the world by lighting Manhattan. But Westinghouse, aided by Nikola Tesla, has seen fatal flaws in Edison’s direct current design. Igniting a war of currents, Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current.

Exclusive: Marginalized by a version rushed for the 2017 Toronto Film Festival weeks before Harvey Weinstein’s banishment and The Weinstein Company’s implosion, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Current War has a new cut and the kind of second chance that most prematurely premiered festival films never get. Upstart 101 Studios has closed a deal for domestic distribution rights and will make The Current War its first substantial theatrical release, eyeing August. That distributor, which paid around $3 million for the rights, has made a wide release commitment, after Gomez-Rejon presented them with an overhauled picture that added five scenes and still came in a good ten minutes shorter than the cut that premiered two Toronto festivals ago.
