It's been four years since Lee Jong-pil earned earned praise for his feature “Samjin Company English Class”. The actor/director has, through the course of his career behind the camera continued to reinvent himself, following his dramedy debut “Born to Sing” with the historical “The Sound of a Flower' before making the 1995 set “Samjin Company English Class”, a female-ensemble led feature. He now continues to do the same with his latest “Escape”, an action thriller about North Korean soldiers.
Synopsis
Im Kyu-nam is a North Korean soldier. He dreams of starting a new life in South Korea. To accomplish his dream, he must flee his home country and cross the Dmz. Meanwhile, Officer Ri Hyun-sang of the State Security Department of North Korea chases after Im Kyu-nam.
If he opted for younger generation actresses like Esom, Go Ah-sung and Park Hye-soo in “Samjin Company English Class”, he does the same...

He just won the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars, so if you're a new Bong Joon-ho fan, here is a crash course of where to go next.
So you just saw history be made on Oscar night when Parasite won Best Picture, beating out the expected frontrunner 1917 and becoming the first non-English film to ever win that award. Maybe you were already a Bong fan or maybe this is your first introduction to the increasingly legendary filmmaker. Either way, you want to take a trip down memory lane and explore his previous work. So now what?
That’s where we come in! Below we have assembled the best places to stream his feature length films, Korean and English, theatrical and Netflix-produced. So get on that warm bullet train and hug your super-pig close, because we’re doing this.

2014 has been a particularly good year for movies. It seems everyone found a group of movies they could hold onto in a very personal way. I like that. It created a very diverse set of top tens around the Internet. However, because opinions were so diverse, it makes a lot of us think, "Why did so many people like thatc" or "Why does no one talk about this moviec" Well, Rope of Silicon writer Jordan Benesh and I decided to choose five films each of us thought got far more praise than they deserved and five films we thought did not get enough love. Thus, we bring you the top ten overrated and underrated movies of 2014. The first five and five combination is mine, Mike Shutt's, and Jordan's start on page three. Enjoy! The lists are not numerically ranked. Just alphabetical. When our top tens come around, then you will get some rankings.

You may not know it, but a futuristic thriller that opened overseas last year to glowing reviews and hefty box office business snuck into Us theatres less than a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I said snuck. Oh, and two of the actresses in it are recent Oscar winners. And the main star was a major part of the third highest grossing film of all time. Speaking of grosses, the director helmed South Korea’s biggest grossing movie…of all time. So, where are the billboards, when did the TV spots air? Most importantly, why didn’t they show the film to the press, so we can generate a little word-of-mouth buzz before opening day? Perhaps it’s because this is not a sequel or a reboot, and it’s not about a popular superhero (it is based on a graphic novel, though a fairly obscure French work). This is...

Hauntingly grim, full of appalling ironies and awful truths. This is most definitely not the feel-good movie of the summer. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big Sf geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There’s a reason why Snowpiercer — which could have, theoretically, easily been a centerpiece summer film for a major Hollywood studio — is getting handled with the timid kid gloves of an arthouse release by the industry, quietly dribbling into a few cinemas here and there instead of getting a big opening-weekend push out onto three thousand screens. It’s a reason that has a lot to do with what the film has to say about human nature, hope, despotism, and a revolutionary spirit that might want to counter that despotism. Chicago – Travelers. We are travelers in this life, and metaphorically we’re mostly in coach, but sometimes manage to get some first class treatment. What if all this traveling were confined to one vehicle? Imagine a future world contained in a constantly traveling train, and the premise for “Snowpiercer” realizes a one-of-a-kind dystopia.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is obviously highly symbolic, as the “train” is operated by a visionary who foresaw the destruction of the earth’s atmosphere, plunging the rest of world into a permanent winter. The “Snowpiercer” is the name of the train, and as the passengers “move” up to the front, what awaits them get more interesting. This is directed by the oddball filmmaker Jooh-ho Bong, who was more successful in his satirical symbolism within his previous films “Mother” and “The Host.” The premise of “Snowpiercer” suffers from some obvious symbolism, including the casting of the actor who portrays...

When I spoke with Bong Joon-ho the week of his Us release for Snowpiercer, we discussed not being able to escape from Fritz Lang's Metropolis, not even Ridley Scott with Blade Runner. I was treated to the visual inspiration behind Tilda Swinton's look in Snowpiercer and a personal story of political protest in Korea in the Eighties that found its way into the aquarium sushi bar scene. We talked about climate weapons, dreams of an eternal engine, re-casting Ah-Sung Ko and Kang-ho Song from The Host and why John Hurt's character relates to Buddha. The catastrophe that turned the world to ice in Snowpiercer's background story, takes place on a date less than a week away.

At the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York, John Hurt and I met up to discuss his pivotal role in Bong Joon-ho's not so merry-go-round science fiction thriller Snowpiercer. Hurt stars with Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer and Ah-sung Ko as the last inhabitants on an iced-over Earth. We also spoke about his work with John Huston, Fred Zinnemann and Richard Fleischer, Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, the triad with Lars von Trier - Dogville - Manderlay - Melancholia, and David Lynch's The Elephant Man. The genius of Brecht combined with Michael Colgan's Gate Theatre may turn into a new adventure for the consummate actor.

Los Angeles - After back to back years of opening night duds "To Rome with Love" and "I'm So Excited," the Los Angeles Film Festival kicked off its 2014 campaign with a real winner, Joon-ho Bong's "Snowpiercer." Stars Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Allison Pill, Kang-ho Song, and Ah-sung Ko were on hand as Bong's critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic thriller finally hit U.S. shores. Chris Evans, who is essentially the film's lead, sent a video message from London where he's shooting "Avengers: Age of Ultron" proclaiming how happy he was over the La premiere. Like co-star Swinton, Evans has been publicly passionate over his love for "Snowpiercer." He actually mentioned his genuine excitement over a long awaited resolution regarding the movie's American release during our interview for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in March. Bong's follow up to his 2009 drama "Mother" was actually released in his native South Korea last August.

I’ve always been of the opinion that “original material” is overrated, especially in Hollywood. Every great movie ever was based on a book—or at least pieces of stories that came before it. If you take some basic science fiction tropes and make a better movie than anybody else, how is it somehow inferior to something that’s “never been done”? I would much rather watch a familiar masterpiece than a revolutionary load of tripe.
Thus with Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, a tale of post-apocalyptic class warfare aboard a massive train, which is not only based on a graphic novel (La Transperceneige) but also draws from a number of classic science fiction stories. The dystopian confinement scenario has been done many times (The Matrix,...

Find out how the world ends (or end-ish) in a minute-long animated clip from Joon-ho Bong’s “Snowpiercer”. Or at least, how much effort it took to board that train that’s at the center of the new sci-fi film. In a word: lots. The clip is narrated by Ah-sung Ko, whose 17-year old character Yona is born on the train. So yes, apparently that train has been going ’round and ’round the doomed planet for a while now. I’m not sure if they’ll be more of these clips, perhaps featuring short prequels for the other characters, including Chris Evans’ rebel leader. We shall see. Set in a future where a failed experiment to stop global warming creates an ice age that kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine.

Captain America leads the charge! Gotta love how Joon-ho Bong’s “Snowpiercer” is shaping up. I was a bit worried this thing might end up being one big bore, with the film stuck underneath its own social importance, but it sure looks like that’s not going to be much of an issue. At least, if these action scenes from the new trailer are any indication. And oh yeah, some new images for the film, too. Those are cool as well. Set in a future where a failed experiment to stop global warming creates an ice age that kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. It's not a *black film* but it's one of a handful of films that I'm really looking forward to checking out this year - South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho's sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer. Some of you will recognize Joon-Ho as the mastermind behind that thrilling 2006 creature-feature The Host; he directed Snowpiercer from his own script, a project that's being produced by another South Korean superstar filmmaker in Chan Wook-Park (Oldboy). The film stars an ensemble cast of revered actors, including Ed Harris, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song and Ah-sung Ko (who both starred in The Host), and Octavia...

Director Bong Joon-Ho knocked it out of the park with The Host (the Korean one, not the Saorise Ronan one), so all eyes are on his english language debut, Snowpiercer. Based on the French graphic novel La Transperceneige, the world has been thrust into a new ice age, with the remnants of humanity crowded onto the massive, titular train where a class society, which threatens to give way to revolution, has developed between the passengers,. New character have been unveiled for the movie, really hammering home the dystopian vibe, and giving us a good look at the massive cast, which includes Chris Evans, Ah-Sung Ko, Tilda Swinton (looking completely different than what we are used to), Ewen Bremner, Jamie Bell, Song Kang-Ho, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris. No release date has been given as of yet.

We’ve seen a few images from Bong Joon-Ho’s dystopian sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer, but now come a series of character posters for the bedraggled folk riding the rails in the film. And they look like people you’d be worried about if they got on the 2:59pm to Paddington, even if one of them is Chris Evans. Take a gander below. Snowpiercer is adapted from French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, which finds the Earth plunged into a new ice age after a disastrous attempt to fix global warming. What’s left of humanity is crowded onto the massive, titular train, where a class society has built up between the classes of travel. Revolution is bubbling away, and it’ll threaten for everyone aboard.Evans is part of the cast alongside Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Song Kang-ho, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Ed Harris, Ah-sung Ko and, most intriguingly, Tilda Swinton.

Ten minutes of Afm footage was enough for the Weinstein Company to scoop up English-speaking rights (including U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) to South Korean Bong Joon-ho's dystopian "Snowpiercer," an action thriller starring Chris Evans. "Snowpiercer" is set in a futuristic Ice Age--after a failed experiment to stop global warming-- where the 1 % run what's left of the world: a single train with no destination, The Snowpiercer. Its inhabitants are divided by class; the lower-class passengers in one of the last cars stage an uprising, moving car by car up to the front of the train, where the oppressive rich and powerful ride. The globalized nature of the film production is notable for combining a local South Korean studio and producers with American stars and crew. Aside from Evans, the film also stars Ed Harris, John Hurt, Song Kang-ho, Ko A-sung, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Allison Pill,...

- Today, we bring you the U.S. one sheet for a film that has smashed box office records and already has an English language remake in the works. The Host sees Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) works at a food-stand on the banks of the Han River. Dozing on the job, he is awakened by his daughter, Hyun-seo ( Ah-sung Ko), who is angry with him for missing a teacher-parent meeting at school. As Gang-du walks out to the riverbank with a delivery, he notices that a large crowd of people has gathered, taking pictures and talking about something hanging from the Han River Bridge. The otherwise idyllic landscape turns suddenly to bedlam when a terrifying creature climbs up onto the riverbank and begins to crush and eat people.
