No one is safe, and nothing is sacred.
On His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 5, the Big Bad finally shows up -- with a bang!
Major characters are dying left and right. Beloved dead characters are returning. And, of course, we finally see the world of the seedpod-skating, talking tapir-like creatures -- the mulefa.
The mulefa are not precisely as they appear in the book, but all things considered, they are close. Like a tapir-giraffe-elephant, these magical sentient creatures have been highly anticipated by fans of the books.
They are peaceful and welcoming of Mary, who studies them diligently. Atal, the first to befriend Mary, understands that their worlds are somehow connected, and Mary may be able to help them with the "sraf" -- their word for dust. Also, how cute were the babies?!
The mulefa way of communicating, with spoken language and trunk (or arm) signing, feels like a gently...

When Philip Pullman published The Amber Spyglass in 2000, it was hailed as a landmark of children’s literature. The 500-page tome was the first novel for children to be longlisted for the Booker prize; a remarkable recognition of what the author had achieved with the His Dark Materials trilogy, which ended with that book. Now it arrives on screens as the third and final part of the BBC’s adaptation of the series, complete with metaphysical musings on life and death, heaven and hell.
As the story resumes, Will (Amir Wilson) is searching for Lyra (Dafne Keen), unaware that her tricksy mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), has her drugged and imprisoned. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby) is on the run through the dimensions, eventually rocking up in the land of the mulefa (strange wheeled beasts that the production designers clearly had great fun rendering). Meanwhile, James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel is...

Plot: Based on “The Amber Spyglass,” the final novel in Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy, in the final chapter of this epic fantasy series, Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, must journey to a dark place from which no one has ever returned. As her father’s great war against the Authority edges closer, they will learn that saving the worlds comes at a terrible price.
Review: Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials has always been a bigger series overseas than in the United States. When the first season of the HBO fantasy saga premiered, it pulled in over seven million viewers in the U.K. as compared to less than a million in the U.S. Similar to the cinematic adaptation of The Golden Compass, American audiences have struggled to appreciate the deep issues at the core of this...

His Dark Materials is officially coming back for a third and final season.
HBO and BBC One have renewed the drama for a third run with the eight-episode season set to close the story. The latest season, which is based on Philip Pullman’s novels, begins production in Cardiff, Wales in 2021.
This comes as the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced drama concludes on Monday, December 28 on HBO.
Last month, Bad Wolf co-founder Jane Tranter told Deadline that Jack Thorne and a team of writers were working on scripts and that the series will be based on The Amber Spyglass. In January, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline that he was particularly pleased that the drama had been a co-viewing hit with families.
The second season, which consisted of seven episodes due to Covid-19, follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world.

Lyra Belacqua’s story is getting a closing chapter.
HBO and the BBC have renewed “His Dark Materials,” the series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic novels, for a third and final season. The first two seasons have mirrored the books relatively closely, so it’s no huge surprise the show is being given one last outing to take a crack at “The Amber Spyglass,” the final book in Pullman’s trilogy.
News of the renewal comes less than a week after the season 2 finale is set to drop HBO, and only two days after the curtain call aired in the U.K. Production on the eight-episode third season is slated to begin in Cardiff in 2021.

“His Dark Materials” Season 2 is still over a month away from premiering, but the HBO fantasy show’s creative team is already hard at work on prepping scripts for a possible third season.
HBO announced on Monday that the sophomore season of “His Dark Materials” will premiere November 16. His Dark Materials will be back with a bang in November as the HBO and BBC big-budget co-production returns for its second season.
HBO will launch the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced adaptation of the Philip Pullman books at 9 p.m. November 16. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
This comes as the team behind the series, which includes writer Jack Thorne, are prepping scripts for a possible third season. Although a third run hasn’t been commissioned, the hope on all sides is for it to run for more seasons.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline earlier this year that the first season had performed very well for the network and that he would like to do more. “One of the things that I was hoping for, and the numbers we’re seeing bear this out, it is more of a co-viewing show than we’ve ever had.

Actors Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters took the dais at Ccxp to talk about HBO fantasy drama His Dark Materials, based on the best-selling novels by Philip Pullman. The two went into detail about their characters and how it has been like working on such an ambitious story about Dafne Keen’s Lyra, who, after searching for her kidnapped friend, uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.
Keen wasn’t able to attend the panel and sent a message of thanks via a video before the actors talked about the show, which tackles intense and heavy topics and themes is just as relevant to children as it is to adults. “We shouldn’t underestimate children,” said Peters. We’re roughly halfway through His Dark Materials’ first season now. Time for some serious voice-over exposition, don’t you think?
“Witches hear the immortal whispers of those who pass between the worlds,” intones an unidentified voice at the start of the fantasy epic’s latest episode (“The Lost Boy”). “They speak of a child who is destined to bring the end of destiny.” That would be our girl, Lyra Belacqua. “If told what she must do, she will fail. But she won’t walk alone.” Is her faithful companion that giant polar bear,...

Who is Serafina Pekkala in His Dark Materials? We break down what the witches mean in the world of the HBO fantasy drama.
This His Dark Materials article contains spoilers through Episode 5.
In a world where the human soul lives outside the body in the form of an animal, it is no surprise that magic and witches like Serafina Pekkala exist. Witches are a vital part of Philip Pullman’s book series, and while we don’t know how much the His Dark Materials show will adhere to the books, it’s reasonable to assume they’re heavily influenced by the book’s canon.
In the fourth episode of His Dark Materials, we meet Kaisa, the gyrfalcon daemon of Serafina Pekkala, queen of the Lake Enara clan of witches. We’re introduced to Serafina herself in the following episode, as she meets with former lover Fader Coram...

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.
Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.
