For 10-year-old actor Keivonn Woodard, life is nothing but net. Literally. As the Emmy nominations were read on Wednesday morning, Woodard was at a basketball summer camp program while his mother, April Jackson-Woodard, was at home watching her son make television history.
In garnering an Emmy nomination for Guest Actor in a Drama Series, for his role as Sam in HBO’s hit drama The Last of Us, Woodard becomes the youngest actor ever to be recognized in the category and the first Black Deaf actor in the Television Academy’s history to secure a nomination.
Still clad in his basketball clothing, alongside his mother, Woodard told Deadline that he was “shocked” when he first found out about the news and that he was mindful about the “importance and huge impact” as a young Deaf Black boy to be honored by the nomination. Regarding setting an example for other actors from similar communities like himself,...

The second season of Amazon Studios’ Eric Kripke-created superhero series The Boys based on the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson only gained in momentum and swagger. Debuting in September, the eight-episode sophomore season nearly doubled the Season 1 worldwide audience (+89%) in just its first two weeks, and even got a shout-out from former President Barack Obama to boot.
The success quickly spawned a Season 3 renewal, with Amazon also at work on a spinoff set at America’s only college exclusively for YA superheroes. The spinoff is being described as “part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.”
But back to Season 2, which saw the vigilantes The Boys – Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara...

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

The Writers Guild of America announced their WGA Awards TV nominations for on Wednesday, February 3. Hulu lands two shows in contention for Comedy Series with “The Great” and “PEN15,” making the streaming service the only company to score multiple nominees in the category. They are joined by HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” and FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Another notable feat belongs to “The Simpsons,” which dominates the animation category with four of the six nominations. Despite premiering over 30 years ago, the Fox series shows no signs of writer’s fatigue. “Bob’s Burgers” and “BoJack Horseman...

Eager for a rare opportunity for a new life on a new planet, a man has only one obstacle to overcome: find his wife. The trailer for Aleem Hossain's debut feature, After We Leave, looks spare yet inviting, accompanied by an entrancing musical theme and snatches of dialogue that impart an intense tone to the proceedings. Brian Silverman stars. Julie Kirkwood served as director of photography. Hossain, Silverman, and Kirkwood produced. Clay Wilcox, Anita Leeman-Torres and Anslem Richardson also star. As noted above, the invite for Steve Balderson's latest feature, El Ganzo, swore that something special was going to occur between a gay man of color and a white female within its running time. Here was an intriguing come-on, one hard to cold-shoulder, so I didn't. Happily, the film is a well-acted, beautifully shot, two-hander about a couple of gentle souls, thrown together by fate, who wind up the better for the confrontation.
Susan Traylor plays Lizzy, an attractive American tourist in Mexico on her way to a hotel. After her cab gets into an accident midway to her destination, she abandons her nonplussed driver, grabs her shoulder bag, and starts walking in the midday heat, seemingly stunned. Maybe she's received a slight concussion or maybe . . .
Many sunstruck hours later, Lizzy arrives at the hotel and falls instantly asleep even before the manager who shows her to her room can leave.

Is there anything worse than a thriller that doesn’t thrill? Well, I’m pretty sure you can think of things comparable and worse, but it still ranks pretty low. Katie Aselton’s Black Rock is such a film. It wants to get your blood pumping, it wants to have you caught up in the narrative, but these things it cannot do because it’s what is known as a “by the numbers” film where the audience is always two steps ahead of the characters. You know what they’re going to do before they do it, even if it’s a really bad decision. As you can imagine, this doesn’t exactly make for a particularly engrossing experience.
The film follows the story of three women, Abby (Katie Aselton), Lou (Lake Bell), and Sarah (Kate Bosworth), who come together to go on vacation to a small, remote island. Two...

Well, at least the credits to "Black Rock" showed promise.
It was written by one of the Duplass brothers, creators of "The Puffy Chair," "Cyrus" and "Jeff Who Lives at Home." Mark Duplass wrote it for a member of that "Puffy Chair" circle, actress-turned-actress / director Katie Aselton.
But slumming in the land of the horror thriller doesn't pay off for anyone involved.
"Rock" is a poorly written and ineptly-directed genre piece that lacks tension, suspense, fear -- all those things that make' a "thriller" thrilling.
Lake Bell, playing one of a trio of single thirtyish women off for a camping trip on the tiny coastal New England island of their youth, puts it best: "This is Such a bad idea."
Sarah (Kate Bosworth) has lured Lou (Bell) and Abby (Aselton), two ex-friends estranged since high school (over a boy, naturally) under false pretenses. They'll spend a weekend on remote Black Rock,...

As if relations between the sexes weren’t strained enough already, along comes Black Rock, a new thriller from writer Mark Duplass (from everything) and director Katie Aselton (The Freebie) that looks like it’s going to fan the flames further, ensuring that we get at least another year of clueless nincompoops publicly declaring their unsettling opinions about rape. The basic story follows three ladies (Aselton, Lake Bell, and Kate Bosworth) who trek out to an isolated island where they used to have camping trips when they were young; you know, to rekindle lost youth or something. When they’re out there though, the island proves to not be as isolated as they thought. They happen upon a group of three very male hunters (Will Bouvier, Jay Paulson, and Anslem Richardson), one of the ladies gets a little frisky with a bearded gentleman around the campfire, and then he gets way handsy and his buddies suddenly turn...

Director and star of this Summer's thriller 'Black Rock' Katie Aselton has been sharing her experiences in front and behind the camera for her new survival feature. Whilst chatting with EW Aselton she revealed just how revealing it gets in the movie with our troubled trio of lovelies Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth ('Straw Dogs') and the director herself. In the interview (available at the link below) she reveals that the extended and necessary nude scene in the movie was used for several reasons, one of them being an homage to the sexploitation flicks of yesteryear. Alana Costello, Jay Paulson and Anslem Richardson also star in the new feature. Sundance movie 'Black Rock', which was penned by Mark Duplass, is expecting a Summer debut....

Actor Katie Aselton's (one of the best parts of "The League") directorial debut, Black Rock, is slated to premiere next month at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Aselton's husband Mark Duplass (Baghead, Cyrus) wrote the screenplay that "follows what happens when three childhood friends meet for a weekend getaway on an isolated island and discover that they have company." Lake Bell ("The League"), Kate Bosworth (Strawdogs, Superman Returns), Jay Paulson ("Happy Town"), Anslem Richardson and Will Bouvier will co-star with Aselton. "I grew up watching classic suspense films and have long had the idea of making a girl-based thriller where the threat to the characters is very real, and the audience is left with the terrifying thought 'this could happen to me,' " said Aselton earlier this year. Check out a brand new still above with all of our Sundance news available here.

Let's hear it for film as the people's medium! Katie Aselton, who made The Freebie, is directing and starring in a thriller called Black Rock, written by her husband, Mark Duplass (Baghead, Cyrus). The film is about "what happens when three childhood friends meet for a weekend getaway on an isolated island and discover that they have company." The cast is pretty much set, and also includes Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth, Jay Paulson, Anslem Richardson and Will Bouvier. But this isn't a big-budget deal; as the involvement of Mark Duplass would suggest, it's a pretty small film that comes from a personal space. And it is looking for audience help to take the final step to creation. Katie Aselton explained the basic approach to the movie, saying, I grew up watching classic suspense films and have long had the idea of making a girl-based thriller where the threat to the characters is very real,...

The Playlist have posted the official trailer for indie dramedy, The Locksmith.
This film, written and directed by Todd and Brad Barnes premiered to decent reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it even picked up the Best of Next Award.
The Locksmith stars Anslem Richardson, Ana Reeder, Stephen Rannazzisi, Cesar De Leon, Mary Beth Peil and Michelle Krusiec.
Synopsis: Mike (Richardson) is a locksmith. He’s also a prisoner on work release, but you wouldn’t know it. He’s just trying to focus on his house calls and reconcile with his ex-girlfriend—until Margo (Reeder) hijacks his day. A live-wire kook who’s certain her boyfriend is cheating on her, Margo bulldozes Mike into spying on the alleged cad. The result: an all-day adventure with a stolen vehicle, a visit to an unlikely drug dealer, and a low blood-sugar attack.
It sounds like a perfectly solid indie drama.

Mike is a locksmith. He’s also in jail. As part of a work release program, he gets to spend his days cracking locks around New York City, returning at night to the work release barracks. He has temporary freedom that he’s not even remotely trying to mess with. The only time he strays is to spy on his ex-girlfriend, Courtney, but even that has more going on than just the usual stalking-an-ex bit. But Mike’s straight-arrow life is about to get turned upside down by the next person to require his services. Her name is Margo. And Margo hasn’t played things straight – well, maybe ever.

As part of an agreement with YouTube, several Sundance 2010 films were made available for rental via the video portal. I took advantage and watched a few, including this one.
I was really hoping to like this film, but it left me underwhelmed, and even slightly irritated.
From a technically standpoint, it’s a well-made film – cinematography, overall production values, etc – and the actors do their best with the material they were provided. I say that because, the writing – the base upon which this ship was built – isn’t as steady as it should be, especially for a Sundance film. This makes me wonder about the selection process by the festival’s committee. Surely, out of the several thousand feature films submitted, this can’t be representative of the best of the lot. If it is, then it’s indicative of the rather sorry state of independent cinema, and it’d...

What are film festivals doing in increase distribution possibilities for their filmmakers and how are they using digital technology to do this and enhance their own position at the same time?
1) Sundance Film Festival is debuting films through VOD under a label called "Sundance Selects". Three films that premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival will debut simultaneously into 40 million Us households, via cable systems and satellite TV. The films will then be available for viewing for 30 days. The films include Michael Winterbottom's and Mat Whitecross's sociopolitical documentary The Shock Doctrine, Benny and Josh Safdie's comedy Daddy Longlegs, and Daniel Grou's drama 7 Days (Les 7 Jours du Talion).
"Moving the storytelling of the Sundance Film Festival beyond 10 days in Utah remains a top priority for us," said actor Robert Redford, founder of the Sundance Institute, about bringing the event to a wider audience, including selected screenings of Sundance films in other Us cities.

I missed this one when I ran my series of Sundance 2010 previews flicks last month, when the titles were unveiled.

A live-wire kook, who’s certain her boyfriend is cheating on her, Margo bulldozes Mike into spying on the alleged cad. The result: an all-day adventure with a (seemingly) stolen vehicle, a visit to an unlikely drug dealer, and a low blood sugar attack. Potential trouble follows these two around – but maybe something good will come of it?
It stars Anslem Richardson, who you might recognize from As The World Turns, The Exonerated, and director Seith Mann’s award-winning short film 5 Deep Breaths, which I posted on this blog last year,...

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.
The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.
Premieres
All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.
The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."

IFC.com's newest web series "Like So Many Things..." premieres today, and co-creators Marin Gazzaniga and Anslem Richardson offer up their thoughts on the best films about romances that are anything but easy.
