A nifty little neo-noir carried by two likeable leads, Lake George follows a pair of down-and-out, middle-aged criminals who try to rip off a rich gangster and somehow get away with it.
Is that a familiar premise? Yes. Do stars Shea Whigham and Carrie Coon manage to make the material feel both fresh and engaging? Yes. Is there still a theatrical audience out there for this kind of modest, well-acted and slickly crafted B-level thriller? That remains to be seen.
Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, veteran director Jeffrey Reiner’s latest feature offers up a few welcome twists on a typical noir scenario: Ex-con Don (Whigham) gets out of jail and tries to collect the money he’s owed by an L.A. thug, Armen (Glenn Fleshler), who lives in a massive McMansion up in the Hollywood Hills. But Don is no tough guy, and he winds up getting...

Elmore Leonard — cinematically, perhaps the most influential writer of the 20th century whose name never gave rise to an adjective — casts a long shadow over Jeffrey Reiner’s Lake George, a satisfying L.A. noir that follows his legacy almost to the letter. There’s no chiaroscuro here, nothing bad happens even remotely in darkness, but there’s a moral shading that Leonard would most likely enjoy. For some reason, though, these sunshine-crime stories never seem to stick like their shadowy counterparts do, which means that Lake George might have to wait a while before it finds out where it sits in the whole noir canon.
Reiner’s script leans into a lot of traditional crime-movie tropes, and it begins with an ambiguous one: Don (Shea Whigham), a middle-aged divorcé, has just been released from jail after 10 years inside. But for what? Don doesn’t seem the type, and his first calls on the outside,...

There is a list of great many things on Tom Cruise’s daily planner that he needs to accomplish, preferably before sundown. One of those things does not include being insulted for his already heavily criticized movie – Mission: Impossible II – 24 years after its release. However, Carrie Coon missed the memo on the subject since it is only now that the actress has started binge-watching all of Ethan Hunt’s magnificent globe-trotting adventures.

But given the niche genre that Tom Cruise’s movies appeal to – the action-hungry, adventure-loving audience – it never occurred to her to get acquainted with the spy franchise until very recently. After all, her co-worker and somewhat best friend Shea Wigham is in the final two installments of the IP.

David O. Russell was having a moment about a decade back, with a series of releases that Made him a director well worth paying attention to. The highlight was American Hustle, a black comedy focused on crime and corruption. It boasts a strong cast, led by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper, but nearly stealing the show was Jennifer Lawrence, still in the early stages of her career.
The film, out now in a new 4K Steelbook format from Sony Home Entertainment, is well worth a look if you missed it in 2013. A year earlier, Cooper and Lawrence danced their way into our hearts with the charming Silver Linings Playbook, and Russell brought them back for this caper, pitting them against one another.
Cooper is an FBI agent who forces con artists Bale and Adams into creating a sting operation intending to take down the May of Camden, New Jersey.

We were first introduced to William Brandt in 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Played by Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner, it was widely reported when he was cast that the actor was being eyed to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise.
The Bourne Legacy's poor performance the following year is rumoured to have led to those plans being scrapped, as did Cruise deciding he wanted to stick around as Ethan Hunt after all.
Renner did, however, return for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, only to have disappeared by the time Fallout rolled around (it was briefly mentioned that the character "retired").
Talking to Collider (via ActioNewz.com) about Mayor of Kingstown season 3, Renner elaborated on his departure from the Mission: Impossible franchise, and it sounds like he was the one who chose to walk away from the popular action franchise.

Mission: Impossible 8's Budget Continues To Spiral Out Of Control After A Submarine Stunt Goes Wrong
Update: We've since heard that the report from The Mirror may be incorrect. Original story follows:

The sequel has since suffered a series of setbacks. Shooting began in March 2022 and was halted last July as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Work resumed this March and, right now, the idea is for Mission: Impossible 8 to be released next May.
However, according to a new report from The Mirror (via ActioNewz.com), the movie has been hit by further delays courtesy of...a malfunction with a submarine set that's cost the production a whopping $23 million.

Apple Original Films has released a new trailer for Fancy Dance. The film stars Academy Award-nominee Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson and will premiere in select theaters on June 21, 2024 before its global debut on Apple TV+ on June 28, 2024.
Synopsis: Since her sister’s disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system.

Lily Gladstone’s “Fancy Dance” is finally set to debut to a wide audience.
After Gladstone championed the indie film at the 2023 IndieWire Honors, the feature was acquired by Apple Original Films. Erica Tremblay co-wrote and directed “Fancy Dance,” which follows Jax (Gladstone) and her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Jax is searching for her sister, Roki’s mother, after Roki’s grandfather Frank (Shea Whigham) has filed to take custody in her absence. Jax and Roki embark on a roadtrip to find Roki’s mother in time for a powwow. The search becomes a “deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” per the film’s synopsis.
Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, and Audrey Wasilewski also star.

"Everybody's out looking for me, who's looking for my sister?" Apple TV has finally unveiled the official trailer for a film titled Fancy Dance, which has been stuck in release limbo for the last year or more. This originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a full six months before Lily Gladstone's Killers of the Flower Moon premiered in Cannes. Many critics say her performance in Fancy Dance is even better, but it hasn't ever been released since 2023. Now it's finally set for a theatrical + streaming debut this summer. The bond between an Indigenous girl and her aunt proves stronger than ever when their loved one goes missing. Following her sister's disappearance, a Native American hustler kidnaps her niece from the child's white grandparents and sets out for the state powwow in hopes of keeping what is left of their family intact. Starring the award-winning Lily Gladstone as Jax,...

Just before Killers of the Flower Moon set her on the path towards an Oscar nomination / robbery, Lily Gladstone debuted another film concerning conflicts between Indigenous and white communities. Erica Tremblay’s 2023 Sundance premiere Fancy Dance is arriving some 18 months later from Apple, who stream it on June 28, and with this comes a trailer.
As John Fink said in his review, “Fancy Dance is a rich character study that explores the contemporary impact of permanently marginalizing a community with limited options. Other communities and economies emerge and potentially entrap someone like Roki who, as a teen, tries reconciling a sense of foundation while having little to grab onto. Above all, this is a well-written drama that feels like an authentic, at times painful exploration of a community from a filmmaker that knows this place all too well.”

This weekend sees the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is looking like a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!
Godzilla:
Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

The breakout star of Love Lies Bleeding, Katy O’Brian, is also seeing her fair share of franchise roles. Prior to her latest A24 movie, O’Brian has played parts in projects for Disney like The Mandalorian and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be seen in the upcoming Twisters, where she says, “We filmed a tornado movie during tornado season in Tornado Alley.” She would reveal that her character is “a little sillier” than she has been used to, but she won’t go as far as to call it a comic relief role. “I don’t want to say comedic role, and then everyone’s like, ‘She wasn’t funny.’ We’ll say it’s silly and fun.”

As last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (which has dropped the “Part One” subtitle since it hit home video) wrapped up, we saw that Tom Cruise’s Imf agent lead character Ethan Hunt would live to run another day – and pictures from the set of Mission: Impossible 8 (which won’t be called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two after all) show him doing just that! Cruise running is a big part of these movies and his overall career, so it’s nice to see that Mission: Impossible 8 will indeed have him moving across the screen as fast as his legs can carry him. There’s even some video from the set as well, if you want to see this run in action.

Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

If Artificial Intelligence took the place of humans, how would the world change? Would we begin pleading with AI to save our lives? These are a few of the questions that viewers still have after seeing Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment in the spy action film series, which was released on July 12.
The Tom Cruise-starrer film was the first Mission: Impossible movie to receive an Academy Award nomination, and it also did pretty well at the box office. It also got points for portraying the possible risks of AI in a timely manner, which is causing serious concerns in the real world.
However, fans have not been shy about pointing out a fatal flaw that has left them baffled, maybe thinking twice. And yes, it is about Cruise’s battle against someone as ‘inevitable’ as AI.

The well-reviewed Fancy Dance has waited for a year for a studio to acquire it, but at long last Apple Studios has stepped in and picked up the Sundance hit.
The process of finding a studio to purchase their film has been quite the wait for the producers of Fancy Dance, an odd occurrence given how well the movie was received when it made its bow at Sundance 2023. That was over a year ago now, but despite earning plenty of plaudits, Fancy Dance struggled to find a distributor.
The film’s failure to find a distribution deal was made even more galling by the fact that 2023 was the year when another film about Native American life, Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon, was incredibly visible. The latter film has enjoyed a wide theatrical run, awards buzz and a release on Apple’s streaming platform.

For over a year, director Erica Tremblay’s acclaimed Sundance drama “Fancy Dance” went undistributed without a means to see it. Its star Lily Gladstone, Oscar-nominated for another Native American-led film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has taken time from her awards campaign to champion the film and urge anyone in Hollywood to support it and give it a home.
Today, that effort has finally paid off. Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to “Fancy Dance” and will release it both in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. A release date was not specified, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. When the seventh Mission: Impossible film arrives on Paramount+ next week, its title will appear different from what moviegoers saw on the big screen. The notoriously long-winded Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is now simply Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. The title adjustment is occurring despite the fact that this film ends on a cliffhanger. After nearly three hours of adventuring, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt must now find a sunken submarine without the aid of computers or A.I.-influenced technology—which is to say he’ll probably be using the old school maritime navigational method known as “dead reckoning.”
It’s an interesting pivot for the franchise, but an obviously useful one. Despite some critics, including our own Don Kaye, adoring Dead Reckoning this past summer, the allegedly penultimate film in the M:i franchise was a box office disappointment, grossing only $568 million globally, down 29 percent from 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout...
