Airing just five days after we marked 25 years since The Sopranos premiered on HBO, series’ Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli marked the anniversary at the 75th Emmy Awards.
“Speaking for Michael, myself and the entire cast and crew, it was an honor working with Sopranos creator David Chase and of course, the great James Gandolfini,” choked-up Bracco said to a thunderous applause.
Bracco and Imperioli were standing in a replica of the therapist office from The Sopranos where Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano and Bracco’s Dr. Melfi held their sessions. A photo of the late Gandolfini was on the table.
“The moment Tony Soprano walked into this [office], doing the unthinkable, sharing his feelings with Dr. Melfi, television history was about to be made,” Emmy host Anthony Anderson said in introducing the segment.

The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

An affluent partner to a much younger spouse finds himself in a sentimental bind. So tight is this knot that he must resort to extra-legal solutions in order to extricate himself so he calls up a hoodlum acquaintance and nervously requests a meeting “in the usual spot.” Were this the 1980s, the rich man might have been played by Martin Landau; a decade later, the thug on the other end of the line could have resembled Tony Sirico. In 2023’s “Coup de Chance,” that usual spot happens to be on the banks of the Seine, just below Pont-Neuf.
Marking the director’s French-language debut (if hardly his first trip to Paris), Woody Allen’s 50th feature, “Coup de Chance,” proves that every now and then, much can be gained in translation. Pundits frequently cite "The Sopranos" as one of the greatest television series of all time, and that reputation is warranted. From the very first episode to the eternally controversial series finale in 2007, David Chase's crime drama cemented HBO as a prime destination for "prestige" television, ushering in a new era of television storytelling along the way. Italian-American Mafia boss Tony Soprano's struggle to hold his family and livelihood together remains as compelling and impactful as it did nearly two decades ago, thanks to top-notch writing and an Emmy Award-winning cast.
It's tough to pick favorites from such a legendary roster of characters, but Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri ranks among the best. The late Tony Sirico (who passed away in July 2022), transformed Paulie into one of the show's biggest personalities. His wisecracking and neurotic nature brings much comedic relief, but beneath that larger-than-life exterior is an emotionally complex man whose...

Every year the Oscar’s hold an in memoriam segment honoring stars and Hollywood professionals who lost their lives over the past year, and every time, there’s controversy after the segment seems to leave notable faces out. “White Lotus” star Michael Imperioli is adding to the criticism that this year’s in memoriam received, by blasting the omission of his prior co-stars Tony Sirico, Paul Sorvino, and Tom Sizemore.
“Sorvino, Sirico and Sizemore,” Imperioli wrote in an Instagram post on Monday, featuring headshots of all three actors. “These three brilliant actors were forgotten by the Academy last night at the Oscars. I was proud and honored to have worked with all three of these men and it saddened me to see Hollywood ignore them on its biggest night.”

During Grammy-winning musician Lenny Kravitz‘s 95th Oscars “In Memoriam” performance, fans noticed several performers, namely Triangle of Sadness star Charlbi Dean, Call Me Kat star Leslie Jordan, and beloved mafioso actors Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas) and Tony Sirico (The Sopranos), to name a few. To present the performance was John Travolta, who got choked up mid-way through his opener: “[…] they’ve touched our hearts, they’ve made us smile, and became dear friends,” he continued, Who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.” This, of course, was a nod to Olivia-Newton John, who sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You” in their 1978 musical, Grease. John Travolta gets emotional as he introduces the “In Memoriam” segment at the #Oscars: “They’ve made us smile, and became dear friends who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.” https://t.co/ndiKiHfmID pic.twitter.com/67NZN8e11d — Variety (@Variety) March 13, 2023 Names such as Travolta...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

There's no question that the late Tony Sirico gave an inspired performance as Paulie on "The Sopranos," but did you know the role was actually based on the actor? Sirico originally auditioned for a different part, but series creator David Chase felt that he wasn't the right fit for the role. Still, the actor made such an impression that Chase wrote an entirely new character just for him. Since Sirico himself inspired Paulie, the character was crafted in his image.
Sirico initially auditioned for Uncle Junior, a part that eventually went to Dominic Chianese. When Chase called Sirico to reject him, he reassured the actor that he would still find a place for him on "The Sopranos." Sirico remembered Chase telling him, "'I've got something in mind for you. I want you on the show. I haven't decided what you're gonna do or who you're gonna be,'" the actor recalled on Today.

Lorraine Bracco choked up while remembering her beloved late co-stars Ray Liotta, Tony Sirico, and James Gandolfini.
The 67-year-old actor starred alongside Liotta in the 1990 film drama Goodfellas, followed by her role in the six-season crime drama The Sopranos, alongside Sirico and Gandfolini.

The Emmys In Memoriam is always a segment up for debate as the annual collection honors the stars and creatives we’ve lost over the past year. The 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards caused some mixed reactions as this year’s tribute rolled with The Voice coach John Legend serenading audiences alongside the accompanying visuals. The emotional presentation recognized some true television legends from a year jam-packed with tragic industry losses, from Golden Girls‘ Betty White, Bosom Buddies‘ Peter Scolari, and Full House‘s Bob Saget to The Sopranos‘ Tony Sirico, The Godfather‘s James Caan, and Ray Liotta. Before there was prestige TV, there was "The Sopranos." The series effortlessly blends brilliant dialogue with complex, serious plots, proving from the beginning that its creative team trusted the intelligence of their audience. It is continuously ranked near the top of best-of lists, and has been awarded every trophy in the game, including 21 Emmys and two Peabody Awards. "The Sopranos" was the first cable series to win an Emmy for outstanding drama, while leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco took home three Emmys each. It's a show that changed how we think about television — without it, we likely wouldn't have gotten "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," or any of the other antihero-driven dramas that defined TV in the '00s and '10s.
There are many words that you can use to describe "The Sopranos," but one that rarely comes up is "underrated." However, not every episode gets the acclaim it deserves.

This What We Do in The Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 7
What We Do in the Shadows’ season 4 episode 7 “Pine Barrens,” is the most regressive and progressive of the series. Stylistically, the episode benefits from dipping into the manic and impromptu energy of both its earlier seasons and the original film it was based on. The forward motion is propelled by Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), who comes out as gay to his family, something they never had a problem with in the first place. If only the same could be said about his vampire tendencies.
The de la Cruz family are a warm and loving unit, supportive of each other, and united in purpose. Yes, they still think Guillermo is working at Panera Bread and one of his uncles has an annoying habit of reminding him there is a menswear option to style choices,...

Updated, July 25 at 3:14 p.m. Et: Oscar winner Mira Sorvino penned a tribute to her late father, “Goodfellas” star and Tony nominee Paul Sorvino.
Mira wrote, “My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend.”
Mira previously credited her father in her Academy Awards acceptance speech for “Mighty Aphrodite,” saying in 1996 that her Oscar is equally an honor to Paul Sorvino, “who has taught me everything I know about acting.”

“The Sopranos” actor Robert Iler remembered his late co-star Tony Sirico on a recent episode of “The Sopranos” podcast “Pod Yourself a Gun.” He attributed Sirico’s presence on set as the main reason he was never harassed, bullied or mistreated like so many other young teenage stars in Hollywood. Iler was around 12 years old when he started playing A.J. Soprano, the son of Tony and Carmela.
“When all the molesting stuff gets talked about… people always say to me, ‘Did anything happen like that on your set?'” Iler said. “And I’m like, you think Tony Sirico was standing around, if there were people eyeing me the wrong way, like ‘Oh, Rob looks really cute today,’ Tony Sirico is just gonna stand there and not do anything?”

Oh Madone, Tony Sirico didn’t let anyone give his co-stars merda on the set of “The Sopranos.”
In a resurfaced podcast episode of “Pod Yourself a Gun” from February 2022 (via Uproxx), actor Robert Iler looked back on Sirico’s commanding presence while filming the HBO series. Iler spoke about how Sirico, who died at age 79 on July 8, took a protective stance toward the then-adolescent actor.
Sirico played darkly comedic mob crony Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri; Iler starred as Aj, the son of mafia don Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). In real life, Sirico served a 20-month sentence at Sing Sing for extortion, coercion, and weapons possession in 1971 before making his acting debut in 1974 with “Crazy Joe.” During “The Sopranos,” Sirico was a force to be reckoned with on set.

There are a lot of big personalities on the classic HBO series "The Sopranos," but few captured the minds and hearts of audiences quite like Paulie Gualtieri, aka Paulie Walnuts. With his wingtip hair, bronzed complexion, and pinkie ring, there's no mistaking Paulie, played by real-life former gangster Tony Sirico, for any other mobster. The character provided most of the comic relief on the series, in part because of his many eccentricities. Paulie is a tough, no-nonsense wise guy who also has an obsessive fear of germs, some wild superstitions, and some peculiar habits. Over the course of the series, Paulie went from being a basic enforcer and...

In the days following Tony Sirico’s death, the cast and crew of “The Sopranos” have come out in droves to remember the man forever known as Paulie Walnuts. Sirico’s acting talents and sense of humor have been widely celebrated, but “Sopranos” creator David Chase wants fans to know that Sirico was also a natural writer. Chase revealed that Sirico was the only actor who ever convinced the showrunner to alter a script, in a new interview with Vulture.
“I will say, Tony was part of one of the greatest casts of all time,” Chase said. “It was certainly the greatest cast I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve worked with some incredible casts. But he was the only one who ever asked me to have a line changed. And I did it.”

“The Sopranos” creator David Chase revealed to Vulture that Tony Sirico was the only actor to ever request a line change during the show’s six-season run on HBO. Sirico, who died on July 8 at the age of 79, played mobster Paulie Walnuts on “The Sopranos” and quickly became a fan favorite due to his blunt and deadpan humor.

Tony Sirico had a couple of firm rules when it came to his beloved Sopranos character, and he would not compromise. In fact, he was so upset over one word in a script for the HBO classic series that he lobbied for a rare script change.
The fan-favorite actor died Friday. He was 79.
Sirico starred in The Sopranos as “Paulie Walnuts” Gualtieri, a New Jersey gangster who was as deadly as he was cheap and obnoxious.
On their former popular podcast Talking Sopranos, hosts and show alums Steve Schirripa and Michael Imperioli once talked about Sirico taking issue with a reference to Paulie in season one, episode 11, “Nobody Knows Anything.”
“One of the only times an actor influenced a change in the script, and it wasn’t even their line,” Imperioli began, setting up the moment. “Makazian [John Heard] didn’t like Paulie.
