Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

"The West Wing" is widely considered to be one of the best shows of all time. Aaron Sorkin's political drama follows the Bartlet Administration through two terms in the White House. For seven seasons we watched Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen), his family, and advisors or assistants — that began to feel like our own family — navigated a constantly shifting political landscape. Premiering in 1999, "The West Wing" fell at the beginning of what we now call the Golden Age of Television and arguably led to high-profile shows like "24," "House of Cards," "Veep," and "The Crown."
"The West Wing" racked up an impressive 26 Primetime Emmy wins and 95 nominations, despite steep competition from chief rival "The Sopranos." With former politicians like Dee Dee Myers and Elie Attie serving as contributors and writers, the show boasted an impressive level of authenticity. Though some have blamed its overly optimistic portrayal of politics for setting...

The actress, who has also guest-starred in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, shared a photo of herself on set in her as-yet-unnamed role.

Early into the pandemic, Thomas Schlamme got a call from Aaron Sorkin. There’d been talk about hosting a Zoom-based reunion of the cast of “The West Wing” doing a reading from an episode as a benefit for the Actors Fund, and since Sorkin and Schlamme were both original executive producers on the show, Sorkin asked his longtime friend and collaborator if he wanted to be involved. As the president of the Directors Guild, Schlamme already had his hands full as the industry reeled from the total shutdown, so he demurred; besides, it was just going to be a bunch of talking heads reading from a script, so Schlamme figured Sorkin didn’t really need a director, anyway.
Roughly four months later, Sorkin called Schlamme again.
“‘You remember that thing I talked about, the Actors Fund?'” Schlamme recalls Sorkin saying. “‘It’s kind of morphed into something completely different.

The West Wing stars Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Rob Lowe, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen reprised their roles from the episode. On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.
Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.
“We can’t believe it has been a year! We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers, who send in donations from all over the world,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “We thought that after the first few weeks, contributions would dwindle and the show would be more about bringing some joy and positivity during these dark times. But the fact that we have been able to do both – deliver fun and financial support – is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so grateful to our team behind the scenes,...

With recent weeks filled by political and election news, a completely different type of awards campaign decision has finally been made. In a Gold Derby exclusive, we have learned from HBO Max and WarnerMedia that the recent “The West Wing” special will not be competing at the 2021 Golden Globes or SAG Awards.
Officially titled “A West Wing Special for When We All Vote,” the October program was written by series creator Aaron Sorkin and directed by executive producer Thomas Schlamme. The reason for not entering the races with the HFPA and Screen Actors Guild is simple: neither of those groups has a specials category. Technically they could submit as a TV movie with SAG but it wasn’t eligible with the Globes as a TV movie. The program was a staged recreation of the third season episode “Hartsfield’s Landing” and not really a typical telefilm.

“Words when spoken out loud for the sake of performance are music” declared President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) in the “The West Wing.” He explained, “and music has the ability to find us, and move us, and lift us up in ways that literal meaning can’t.” The political drama embodied this spirit, in the words composed by series creator Aaron Sorkin; its conduction by directors like Thomas Schlamme; and in the performances by one of the most gifted casts ever assembled. And, as an election looms with the state of democracy on the line, they all just got back together for an encore.

Your Moulin Rouge-adoring mind was not playing tricks on you: That was indeed Undoing star and exec producer Nicole Kidman singing a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” in the HBO limited series’ opening title sequence (watch here).
The song choice is, of course, drenched in irony given the David E. Kelley-penned thriller’s dark premise and, you know, foreboding title. But for the first half of Sunday’s premiere, Kidman’s moneyed Manhattanite Grace Fraser was living something of a fantasy life, even if director Susanne Bier’s haunting vision of New York in winter foreshadowed the nightmare to come.

If anything could get the cast of The West Wing back together again for a reunion special, it's the 2020 election. The HBO Max special, which premiered Oct. 15, revisits the season three episode "Hartsfield's Landing" for the benefit of When We All Vote, whose mission is "to make sure every eligible voter is registered and ready to vote in every election." In the episode, President Bartlet engages both Sam Seaborn and Toby Ziegler in a game of chess while dealing with a potential conflict between China and Taiwan. With the President focused on his very real conflicts, Josh Lyman tries to account for all 42 votes in a New Hampshire primary with C.J. Cregg and Charlie Young engaging in a battle of their own.

If the emphasis on Zoom this year has given us anything, it’s the opportunity to attend festivals and see things we wouldn’t necessarily be able to in the flesh. The Montclair Film Festival, running October 16-25, usually takes place in New Jersey but, like many festivals, it’s gone virtual this year — and they’re bringing the likes of Stephen Colbert to audiences with a very special performance.
“Stephen Colbert’s Lost Pilot Project: Sometimes Live” will be closing out the 2020 festival with a special one-night-only performance.
As Colbert himself says, in 1998 he and a group of “Saturday Night Live” writers were tasked by ABC’s Michael Eisner to create a show that would usher in the return of the variety show. What they came up with was a show that sought to look behind-the-scenes of a sketch show not unlike “Saturday Night Live.”

“See the whole board,” a chess-instructing Martin Sheen’s President Josiah Bartlet tells Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn in HBO Max’s A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.

“The West Wing” is back – and its opening credits look a little different, thanks to a spoof on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”
Fans of “The West Wing” rejoiced on Thursday when it was announced that cast members Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford would be returning for an Oct. 15 special on HBO Max benefitting When We All Vote. On Friday, Janney, Schiff, Sheen, Whitford and creator Aaron Sorkin made an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” via Zoom to talk about the special, and how “The West Wing” may be different if it aired today.
This included airing a remake of the show’s title sequence with the real-life presidential administration – many of which have tested positive for Covid-19 over the past week. Instead of smiling faces, the spoof shows the empty space that is currently left behind in the west wing.

It’s been 17 years since the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s “The West Wing” left the White House. Now, when the show is more relevant than ever, the series’ regulars will reunite for one night only.
“A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote” will see President Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, return for an on-stage recreation of the Season 3 episode “Hartsfield’s Landing.” Other stars from the series, including Allison Janney, Sterling K. Brown, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, Dule Hill, and Janel Moloney will also reprise their roles.
Based on the trailer released for the special, the location may look different but the actors are able to slip right back into character.
