Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.

“Succession” is going out in style!
The HBO drama took home the big prize — Outstanding Drama Series — at the Emmys on January 15 for the fourth and final season of the buzzy hit.

Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actress. She plays Riley Abel on the HBO drama series, and this marks her first career victory (on her first nomination) with the Television Academy.
After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. The official Primetime Emmys ceremony will air on Fox next Monday, January 15 with Anthony Anderson serving as host.
Reid’s episode, titled “Left Behind,” is a flashback entry focusing on lead character Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) past. It primarily functions as a two-hander in which the tight-knit military school roommates realize just how deeply they care for each other while covertly spending a night alone in a deserted shopping mall.

This year’s Best Drama Guest Actress category at the Emmys is a tightly-knit affair with only two shows — “Succession” and “The Last of Us,” both HBO projects — reaping nominations. “Succession” landed three bids for Harriet Walter, Hiam Abbass, and Cherry Jones, while “The Last of Us” produced nominations for Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, and Anna Torv.
SEEPeter Hoar (‘The Last of Us’ director) on aligning ‘with a story that really talks to you and speaks from the heart’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Torv, like her co-star Reid and “Succession” contender Abbass, is a first-time Emmy nominee after working in the industry for years. She features in three episodes of “The Last of Us” as Theresa “Tess” Servopoulos. Her nominated episode is “Infected,” which is the second episode of the series and features the character’s climactic death (Torv also appears in the third episode during flashbacks). After a 28-year-old Lee You-mi (“Squid Game”) set a new record in 2022 as the all-time youngest Emmy winner for guest acting, she could be supplanted by Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who became a first-time Emmy nominee mere days after turning 20. Like Lee (who isn’t eligible for a repeat win), Reid is seeking the Best Drama Guest Actress prize for her portrayal of a likable, ill-fated character on a new series with a contemporary, dystopian setting. Given her show’s even greater level of TV academy recognition compared to “Squid Game” last year, Reid could very well be on her way toward a historic victory.

Kathleen Coghlan may have met her demise in the first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” but the woman who plays her, Melanie Lynskey, is stronger than ever at the Emmys. After landing her long-overdue first nomination last year, for her lead performance on the Showtime hit “Yellowjackets,” the New Zealander added not one, but two bids to her tally this past July, including one for her sinister guest turn on “The Last of Us.”
As Kathleen, the ruthless leader of a resistance group that freed Kansas City from military rule, Lynskey appears in the fourth and fifth episodes of the post-apocalyptic drama, of which the latter, “Endure and Survive,” serves as her Emmy submission. After it’s made clear that Kathleen will stop at nothing to hunt down and execute the man (Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Lamar Johnson) who ratted out her resistance leader brother, she...

Last year “Succession” broke the record for the most acting nominations in a single year at the Emmys with 14, and it tied that tally in its final season in 2023. Like last year there are three women from the show in the Best Drama Guest Actress category, one of whom is a perennial favorite and a previous winner for the HBO satirical drama: Cherry Jones for her role as Nan Pierce.

Jones began her career as a founding member of the American Repertory Theater in 1980 and has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, having performed in distinguished plays such as “Stepping Out,” “Our Country’s Good,” “Angels in America,” “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” and “The Glass Menagerie” and winning Tony Awards for Best Actress for “The Heiress” and “Doubt.” On screen, she has had an active...

After appearing in the majority of “Succession” episodes, Hiam Abbass is finally an Emmy nominee. The actress recurred in all four seasons of the HBO series as Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) wife Marcia, even as their relationship was rocked by Logan’s affairs with Rhea Jarrell — who could forget Abbass’s shakedown of Holly Hunter? — and others. Abbass returned for two episodes of the final season, for which she nabbed a bid for Best Drama Guest Actress. Could she prevail on her very first try?
To do so, Abbass will have to best a formidable group of contenders, including two others from her own show. Cherry Jones reprised her Emmy-winning character Nan Pierce from the second season of “Succession” in the fourth season premiere and earned her fifth career bid, while Harriet Walter has earned her third nomination for “Succession,” and fifth overall, as Logan’s former wife and...

Frances Sternhagen, the versatile actress whose half-century on Broadway included two Tony Awards, seven nominations and memorable roles in Equus, On Golden Pond and The Heiress, has died. She was 93.
Sternhagen died peacefully Monday of natural causes at her home in New Rochelle, New York, her family said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “We continue to be inspired by her love and life,” they noted.
With all her success on the stage, Sternhagen is perhaps best known for playing two mothers on television: the blue-blooded Bunny MacDougal on HBO’s Sex and the City and the overbearing Esther Clavin on NBC’s Cheers. She received Emmy nominations for both performances.
Sternhagen specialized in portraying characters who had a no-nonsense, overbearing attitude and plucky fortitude. She relished roles that were off the beaten track — the odder and more eccentric, the better.
“I must say it’s fun to play these snobby older ladies.

Are we underestimating Christina Applegate and Cherry Jones? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss some Emmy dark horses as Phase 2 voting wraps up in a few days only for the results to be kept under lock and key for five months.
The Best Comedy Actress race remains a tricky category to crack despite the odds heavily leaning toward Quinta Brunson for “Abbott Elementary.” While we’ve both had former champ Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) for a while, one of us has made the switch to Applegate. The “Dead to Me” star is her show’s only nomination, which does not bode well, considering no one has won this category without a series nomination since Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & Molly”) in 2011. But Applegate is a former winner and a beloved figure who’s nominated for her final onscreen performance — can that push...

This story about the production design of “Poker Face” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Even in a galaxy far, far away, offscreen alliances can be forged that come in handy down the road. Director Rian Johnson had the great good fortune to meet stop-motion legend Phil Tippett while he was working on 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at Skywalker Ranch near Tippett’s home, and the pairing led to “The Orpheus Syndrome,” one of the most satisfying episodes of Peacock’s sleuth comedy “Poker Face.” In the episode, a hermetic, Tippett-like designer (Nick Nolte), scarred by a filmmaking mishap years prior, finds himself blindsided by the schemes hatched up by his effects-house mogul boss (Cherry Jones), only to have the resourceful Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) interfere when she becomes his assistant.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.
It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.
“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. It was like a tidal wave that wiped out everything in its path,” Durst said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen awards-season event. “We wanted to be as accurate as possible. Matthew Macfadyen is Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win his second consecutive Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy this year for playing the very tired Tom Wambsgans on HBO’s “Succession.” Fun fact: if he were to prevail against co-nominees Alexander Skarsgard, Alan Ruck and Nicholas Braun from “Succession” and F. Murray Abraham, Will Sharpe, Michael Imperioli and Theo James from “The White Lotus,” that would tie him with four other dramatic supporting actors on Emmy’s all-time list.
Stuart Margolin (“The Rockford Files” in 1979-80), Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues” in 1981-82), Larry Drake (“L.A. Law” in 1988-89) and Ray Walston (“Picket Fences” in 1995-96) all took home back-to-back Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category during their shows’ tenures.

The Little Show That Could did on Wednesday morning as the Amazon Freevee word-of-mouth sensation “Jury Duty” completed the most improbable run for top comedy series in recent memory (if not ever) by landing a spot among the big boys and girls – becoming the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season. Moreover, its its “star” James Marsden generated an equally surprising achievement with a supporting comedy actor nod today.
As recently as late June, “Jury Duty” stood 17th in the Gold Derby combined odds for top comedy series at 100/1. Its final odds placed at only 13th, still at 100/1. But the show that premiered in April on a streaming service few had even heard of made waves even immediately and kept right on making them through this wildly unlikely grassroots Emmy run. The 2023 Emmys nominations are finally out, and this year’s nominees have secured landmark representation for Asian American, Latino and LGBTQ+ actors.

With Kumail Nanjiani also securing a nomination in the Lead Actor in a limited series category for Hulu’s “Welcome To Chippendales,” the 2023 nominations made history by nominating two Asian American actors for Outstanding Lead Actor in a limited series for the first time. “Beef” supporting actors Joseph Lee and Young Mazino also secured nominations for supporting actor in a limited series, and Maria Bello scored a nod in the supporting actress category.

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Harrison Ford in both Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Shrinking”) and Best Drama Actor (“1923”), Paramount’s red-hot “Yellowstone” and 2022 nominees Christina Ricci (“Yellowjackets”) and Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”). HBO’s “Love and Death” missed the mark for Best Limited Series and its lead Elizabeth Olsen, as did National Geographic’s “A Small Light” and star Bel Powley.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that merit mentioning by sounding off in the comments section.

HBO’s “Succession” is going out on top, nabbing 27 Emmy nominations Wednesday morning with a record-matching 14 acting nominations in a single year. That equals the show’s own 14 acting nominations in 2022, at which time it edged out previous record holders “Roots” and “Rich Man, Poor Man,” each of which had 13 nominations.
“Succession” did make history with the nominations, however, earning three slots in lead actor for a drama series for the performances of Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong. Also earning accolades are Sarah Snook for lead actress; Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård for supporting actor; and J. Smith-Cameron for supporting actress. In the guest categories James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, Hiam Abbass, Cherry Jones and Harriet Walter all scored nominations.
With 27 nominations overall, “Succession” continues to feel the love from the TV Academy. Though a slow starter with just five nominations in its first season,...

This season, the Emmy Awards celebrates its 75th anniversary. In the age of “peak TV” with close to 600 original scripted series, the nominations recognize the importance of the writers, performers and all those who worked on television programs in the past year.

All season long, the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress has been a battle between two front-runners: Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) and Claire Danes (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”). Can anyone stop them from winning the trophy? Based on the combined odds at Gold Derby, the rest of the category is likely to be a mix of actresses from popular series like Maria Bello and Ashley Park (“Beef”), and beloved favorites from series not as much on the radar like Olivia Colman (“Great Expectations”) and Cherry Jones (“Five Days At Memorial”). But it’s still anyone’s game.
