This article contains spoilers for the first two seasons of The White Lotus.
There may not be a detective on the guest list at The White Lotus, but the dark dramedy could certainly use one.
After all, both seasons of the HBO anthology series start with glimpses of dead bodies and spend subsequent episodes tracking the story of how those individuals ended up in such an … unfortunate state. Hulu‘s Death and Other Details is a bit more up front with its detective work and murder plot, but the series’ witty humor and vibrant scenery gives definite The White Lotus vibes and makes a great stand-in while fans wait for The White Lotus season 3 to drop in 2025. After all, what’s more entertaining than watching wealthy, love-to-hate characters suffer a bit of misfortune on their opulent vacations?

According to Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams, the co-creators of Hulu’s Death and Other Details, one of the guiding principles to creating a good murder mystery TV series is to not deceive the audience. When something happens, it needs to stick.
“You have to play fair with the audience,” McAdams tells Primetimer. “Each of your twists, when they all add up at the end, need to exist in the same story and not contradict each other.”
So when Winnie (Annie Q. Riegel), the soft-spoken deck waitress, confesses to the murder of Keith (Michael Gladis) at the end of Episode 4, audiences should believe her. Just don’t be naive enough to think that’s the whole story.

Imogene Scott is determined to find the killer in Death and Other Details, but she always ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Episode 3, debuting January 23 on Hulu, Violett Beane‘s amateur sleuth gets caught trying to break into yacht owner Sunil’s (Rahul Kohli) safe at the direction of the has-been detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin). TV Insider has an exclusive first look at the moment in the clip above. The hunt for Keith Trubitsky’s (Michael Gladis) killer is on in Episode 3. Interpol Agent Hilde Eriksen (Linda Emond) arrives and takes over the investigation in the installment. Rufus and Imogene stealthily investigate Collier Mills with Sunil’s help. Meanwhile, Anna (Lauren Patten) does her best to get the billion-dollar deal with the Chuns back on track. In the clip above, Imogene tries to turn this would-be-incriminating moment into a pitch to get Sunil involved in her and Rufus’ investigation.

“Memory is a motherfucker,” detective Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin) declares in Hulu’s Death and Other Details. Humans, he means, are prone to accidental forgetfulness, self-indulgence, and, on occasion, trauma-driven memory loss. How, then, will Rufus, the so-called “World’s Greatest Detective,” crack a case that relies on both his own and witnesses’ memories over the last 20 years?
The inciting incident is the murder of entitled richling Keith Trubitsky (Michael Gladis) aboard a luxury ocean liner, establishing an Agatha Christie-style closed circle of suspects, as the killer must be on the ship. Trubitsky, it turns out, was invited as a friend of the Colliers, whose family business is on the brink of financial ruin. They chartered the boat as a last-ditch attempt to schmooze potential investors, the Chun family, who’ve hired Rufus to do due diligence.
Rufus has his own agenda: to finally solve the 20-year-old murder case of the Colliers’ former assistant.

Exclusive: Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem, the Hulu series in the works that stars Mandy Patinkin, has put the finishing touches on its already starry ensemble by adding Linda Emond (The Gilded Age) and Jayne Atkinson (House of Cards) in heavily recurring roles.
Emond will play Agent Hilde Eriksen, a shrewd, bureaucratic Interpol agent who comes on board the SS Varuna to investigate after a murder takes place. She’s repped by CAA. Atkinson will play Katherine Collier, the whip smart mother of Anna (Lauren Patten) and wife to the powerful tycoon Lawrence Collier (David Marshall Grant). She’s repped by Industry Entertainment.
The project written by Stumptown duo Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams and directed by Marc Webb asks the question how do you solve a murder in a post-fact world, especially when sailing the Mediterranean on an ocean liner filled with the wealthy and powerful? Once in a while, Svu tackles the issue of male survivors not being heard or believed.
Law & Order: Svu Season 22 Episode 15 was one of those times, and it did not disappoint.
Michael Gladis did great work as an unstable and tortured victim who was afraid to come forward, leading to one of Svu's most tense hours yet.
Andy was far from an ideal witness to his own assault, which was both frustrating and realistic.
As Captain Cragen told Benson on Law & Order: Svu Season 1 Episode 1, the team doesn't get to pick its victims.
Many survivors, male and female, have habits or personality traits that make it harder to prosecute their cases, and Andy was no exception.
His alcoholism and drug addiction and his difficulty in coming forward at all worked against him, especially since his wife hired a sharp attorney who was able to twist his past actions to tell a different story.

Law & Order: Svu showrunner Warren Leight knows we’ve all been through a lot recently, and that’s why he and the NBC series’ writing staff are going to take pity on us in Season 22’s final hour.
“It has been such a horrible year for so many people,” Leight tells TVLine. “We chose to end on a more hopeful note, rather than having somebody held hostage.” (And if you’re wondering whether Det. Stabler may be involved in that hopeful note… make sure to read to the end of this post.)

It’s no surprise that The Neighborhood has clicked with audiences. The success of CBS’ No. 1 comedy, which was recently picked up for Season 4, hinges on the chemistry of its stars, including Beth Behrs and Tichina Arnold, who play Dave and Calvin’s better halves, Gemma and Tina.
No less than 24 hours after CBS handed a renewal to The Neighborhood did TVLine hop on the phone with the dynamic duo. Together, Behrs and Arnold previewed Behrs’ husband’s guest spot in tonight’s episode, and gave us a taste of what’s to come in March 8’s rock-and-rolling half hour...

It’s the penultimate episode of The Amazing Race‘s 32nd season, and unfortunately for one team, the leg (and race) ended in absolute heartbreak.
As the teams drop down in Manila, in the Philippines, they’re shocked to discover they’ll be taking part in the first-ever City Sprint — no roadblocks, no detours… no kidding! But with the final leg (and the $1M!) on the horizon, this sprint certainly won’t be a walk in the park. Which team checked in last and was cut from the competition just one leg before the finale? Let’s recap!

It's game over for another Showtime series.
The premium cabler has canceled Penny Dreadful follow-up City of Angels after a single season.
“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,”Showtime said in a statement.
“We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project.”
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set nearly 50 years after the original series, during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s.
It takes place in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.
The characters are connected in a conflict between the Mexican folklore deity, Santa Muerte, the caretaker of the dead and guide to the great beyond, and her spiritual sister, the demoness Magda, who believes mankind is inherently evil and aims to prove her point.

A version of this story about Natalie Dormer and “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” first appeared in the Drama/Comedy/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
If Natalie Dormer did nothing in “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” but play the dark goddess Magda, the British actress would have had a juicy role as a supernatural force intent on pushing the human race into turmoil in 1930s Los Angeles. But one of Magda’s special powers is that she can assume any form she wishes — so in addition to appearing on screen as Magda, Dormer also gets to play three of her human iterations in the mousy but scheming political aide Alex, the German-American housewife Elsa and the zoot-suited gang leader Rio.
“For any actor, I think your ears prick up when you get offered the chance to play four roles for the price of one — how many times is...

Mad Men's return to steaming later this month will include a disclaimer about the show's use of blackface.
On Wednesday, July 15, all seven seasons of Mad Men will stream for free, with commercials, on the Amazon-owned IMDb TV.
Variety is reporting that an episode of Mad Men Season 3, titled “My Old Kentucky Home” will have a disclaimer at the top of the episode.
The aim of the message is to offer context to viewers about a scene in which John Slattery’s Roger sings the anti-slavery ballad “My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night” while wearing blackface.
“This episode contains disturbing images related to race in America. One of the characters is shown in blackface as part of an episode that shows how commonplace racism was in America in 1963," Variety reveals the disclaimer will say.
"In its reliance on historical authenticity, the series producers are committed to exposing the injustices...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels ends with the same lines in which it began: “There will come a time when the world is ready for me, when nation will battle nation, when race will devour race, when brother will kill brother until not a soul is left. Are you ready?” Only this time, Magda (Natalie Dormer) isn’t saying it to her sister, Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo). She is saying it to one of two brothers who are now on very different sides of a struggle they were both born to.
Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) doesn’t tell Magda whether he is ready in the penultimate scene, but her gloved touch fills him with a burning determination. She approaches him from behind. At first, he appears soothed, but then acknowledges this is not a friendly touch. He looks like he’s making a choice. Magda appears to believe he’s reached a foregone conclusion,...

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 10
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels closes out the season in a strangely moving way, which is par for the course for a series like this. It’s not because of who and what is lost during the episode, but the movement of the arc which is thrown off-kilter. “Day of the Dead” opens with a funeral march which swings into an uprising. The repercussions will rattle Los Angeles heavily for days, but the implications will rearrange the urban landscape forever.
The future belongs to “big, fat men” like Mussolini, Huey Long and himself, Councilman Charlton Townsend (Michael Gladis) declares over a celebratory breakfast. The event which makes him so happy is the exact kind of thing someone in his position should be appalled by: a riot in the very city he has sworn responsibility to.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 9
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 9, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” is, for the most part, a celebration, but not because of any anti-fascist resistance or solved crime. Last week’s cat and mouse game didn’t catch itself a canary. Tonight’s episode opens where last week’s left off. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) are licking their wounds after a machine gun ambush sidetracked their takedown. Michener is most pissed about the loss of his classic V-12 car and he’s running on all pistons.
The standoff between Michener and Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann) is a joy to behold. There are so many layers to it, beyond the enormously satisfying dialogue. Michener’s a Jew in a restricted club, which has to be fun for Lane to play going in.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 8
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 8, “Hide and Seek,” begins a new cat and mouse game. Detectives Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) cleared the police docket by pinning a series of murders on one suspect, Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) and were given a week’s paid leave as a thank you. But the two cops are having a devil of a time filling their idle hours.
Last week’s episode, “Maria and the Beast,” ended with a change of plans. Lewis called in his favor and enlisted Tiago in his understaffed and unfunded war against Nazis in Los Angeles. But the takedown became a stakeout when the two cops saw other major players sitting down to dinner with the first wave of the Third Reich, Richard Goss (Thomas Kretschmann). Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 6
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 6, “How It Is With Brothers,” opens in a frightening situation completely outside of supernatural influence. There are no whispering spirits, no conjurations of dark saints or sacred monsters. There is only righteous rage and racial hatred, a far more frightening combination than any creature featured in the gothic series which started the franchise. Tiago (Daniel Zovatto) should have taken a swig from Lewis’ (Nathan Lane) flask before walking into enemy territory: his own precinct.
The two detectives bring in Diego Lopez (Adan Rocha) for the murder of officer Reilly (Rod McLachlan) and all the other cops want a piece of flesh. The young Pachuco is bleeding when he is brought in, and this is like chumming the water to attract a feeding frenzy. This dynamic will take different forms...

Magda takes a back seat in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels episode 4, “Josefina and The Holy Spirit,” while her vehicle careens across the track she laid. The episode opens with Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo), wearing her sadness as prominently as her white flowing lace, as she walks into town, unseen but by an innocent child. The little girl actually turns to look at the Saint of Death just as the audience is wondering whether or not the other townspeople can see her. Santa Muerte knows what we are thinking before we think it. That’s why she’s at the scene of every crime long before the criminals.

Billed as "a spiritual descendent" of the original Penny Dreadful series which ran from 2014-2016, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1 Episode 1 introduces a supernatural pantheon of beings in a hauntingly familiar context, pre-wwii America.
This being the series premiere -- and me being a huge fan of the original series -- it's hard not to spend a lot of time comparing the two.
Like its predecessor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels boasts an impressive cast, lush cinematography, and an ambitious narrative.
However, where the original played on the well-known characters of classic gothic and horror literature -- Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, the Wolf-Man -- this new incarnation is building somethng novel and more complex around the figure of Santa Muerte, the Angel of Holy Death.
Tiago: Santa Muerte is the Angel of Holy Death. She's the one who brings dead people to Heaven.
Lewis: Oh, she's the one who does that.

In “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” John Logan’s followup series to his previous three-season “Penny Dreadful” drama at Showtime, Natalie Dormer stars as Magda, a shape-shifting demon intent on sowing chaos wherever she goes. The backdrop is 1938 Los Angeles, an era rife with racial tension — the perfect opportunity for a hell goddess to start a race war.
“I think the mythology behind it was, to me, as she says in the first episode, ‘All mankind needs to be the monster he truly is, is being told that he can,” Dormer tells Variety. “She basically believes that mankind is inherently bad — that they will choose the baser, more selfish, more egocentric route whenever given a fork in the road.”
Magda manifests as three different human characters in the series, each with distinct looks and accents: There’s Elsa, a blonde blue-eyed immigrant from Germany with an abusive husband; Rio, a...

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” — Showtime’s reboot of the London-set “Penny Dreadful,” which aired from 2014-16 — takes us back to 1938 Los Angeles. It’s not film noir, explains costume designer Christie Wittenborn. “It’s a hot L.A. summer.” Hollywood here features zoot suits, evangelical radio singers and Mexican folklore as the series flits around social and racial issues as well as political and religious questions. The series debuts April 26.
Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) stars as the demon Magda, who can take on various human forms, providing an eclectic canvas for Wittenborn’s work.
One of Magda’s early manifestations is Alex Malone, a tough character with a mannish edge who serves as an aide to Councilman Townsend (Michael Gladis).
“Natalie gave me a sense of how she was going to carry her body, so I wanted to keep the silhouette of what she wore rigid,” Wittenborn explains.

Los Angeles — with its rapid and untrammeled expansion, its low-hanging sun, and its status as the factory where our collective dreams, and nightmares, are born — provides unusually fertile territory for horror. And “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” a spinoff on a previous Showtime series set in Victorian London, capitalizes, minting an engaging and finely-tuned story set in Hollywood in 1938, its so-called Golden Age. The presence of the supernatural, bleeding into the lives of the hapless mortal Angelenos we meet, feels from the start fairly natural — what’s Hollywood if not haunted?
