The blending of two disparate but popular film genres – in this case, the horror/sci-fi film with the saddle opera - was hardly new when The Valley of Gwangi hit the big screen in 1969. This film’s most identifiable predecessor, one pitting cowboys against a prehistoric monster, might be The Beast of Hollow Mountain (1956), but truth be told Hollywood had been combining these two genres almost from the very beginning. In the 1930s and ‘40s, audiences thrilled to the ghostly monochrome exploits of such western serial heroes as Ken Maynard, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Buster Crabbe with such films as Tombstone Canyon (1932), The Vanishing Riders (1935), and Wild Horse Phantom (1944). Universal’s Curse of the Undead (1959) was a later but no less interesting experiment for Hollywood’s preeminent fright factory. The studio removed the vampire from the usual atmospheric Gothic trappings of old Europe and dropped him onto the sagebrush plain.

When Chicago Justice was announced, many people asked "Do we really need a Chicago lawyer show?" Based on Chicago Justice Season 1 Episode 1, the answer is we most certainly do.
"Fake" is everything that Chicago Justice needed to be and everything that a great legal drama should be. It's a smartly written hour with genuine suspense that provokes meaningful discussion, and the Law & Order references are a very nice touch for anyone who knows their Dick Wolf series history.
The episode wisely stays away from simplifying its legal drama down to "Chicago Pd catches bad guy and State's Attorneys bust bad guy." It actively attacks the police's investigation of the massive warehouse arson and encourages the audience to do the same.
It even gets particularly thorny when State's Attorney Mark Jefferies, who is as politically minded as he is legally minded, makes his top litigator Peter Stone aware that both Stone's...

Need to catch up? Check out the previous Grimm recap here.
The Wesen-o’-the-week in this week’s Grimm is a three-eyed, three-armed baby eater.
And he’s a good guy.
While watching the hour, you definitely get a sense that the NBC supernatural drama has loosened the reins in its sixth and final season — and that’s a great thing.
After last week’s joyfully slapstick hour, this week’s installment makes light of the fact that a creature known as “El Cuegle” snacks on infants (no, seriously) at the same time that the episode raises — and, in an uncharacteristic move for the series,...

Curt Siodmak’s The Magnetic Monster is one of the more thoughtful – and thought provoking - science-fiction films of the era. Produced by Ivan Tors (whom would share screenplay credit with Siodmak), this intriguing 1953 release from United Artists is a cerebral, worthy addition to the classic sci-fi canon. Its likely most fondly remembered among devotees of 1950s sci-fi for whom the presence of a rubber-suited monster is not a prerequisite.
Richard Carlson (It Came From Outer Space, The Creature from the Black Lagoon) essays the role of Dr. Jeffrey Stewart, a brilliant graduate of Boston’s M.I.T. now working for the Osi (Office of Scientific Investigation). Stewart and his assistant, the bespectacled egghead Dr. Dan Forbes (King Donovan) are self-described “Detectives with Degrees in Science.” They’re government “A-Men,” the “A” prefix representative of their pedigree in atomic energy research. What's your take on Edward Snowden: A patriot deserving of a presidential pardon? A traitor deserving of execution, as Trump believes? Something in between? In Snowden the movie, in which a fiercely committed Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the title role, Oliver Stone removes all doubt. He's Saint Edward, the cyber-nerd who's living in exile in Russia for the crime (or heroic act) of leaking classified Nsa documents that show how Uncle Sam (or Big Brother) is monitoring us, all of us, 24/7. As in Citizenfour, the brilliant documentary from Laura Poitras,...

Remember the good ol’ days, when Supergirl‘s weekly enemy was a piece of cake like Livewire?
Sure, she could absolutely ruin someone with her electric touch, but she could also be defeated with a bucket of water, Wicked Witch of the West-style — and that simple solution seems too good to pass up now.
Because now, when Supergirl battles her latest foes, it’s not so cut-and-dried. Instead, Kara’s finding herself caught up in all sorts of moral dilemmas each time she fights a bad guy, and Monday’s episode is no exception.

It's the final entry in Wesley's top 100 Christmas TV episodes of all time list, numbers 20 to 1. Merry Christmas to all!

Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Fans are still talking about Kendra Wilkinson's infamous meltdown on the season premiere of "Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars." In case you missed it, the "Kendra on Top" star went off the rails when her mother, Patti, made an appearance during her mock wedding ceremony with husband Hank Baskett. When her mom tried to speak, Kendra accused Patti of not supporting her marriage, then starts screaming, "The devil has eaten your soul!" So, what did "Marriage Boot Camp" newbies Jeff Schroeder and Jordan Lloyd think of the outburst? "I kept looking over at him, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I shouldn’t be here. I need to get out of here,’” Jordan told toofab's Rachel Hoffman. "For me, it was a little much," Jeff added. "This blows up, and I’m like, ‘Is this real?’ But she was very emotional; it went on for quite a while.

Kendra Wilkinson is not a mama's girl. In a sneak peek clip from the new season of "Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars," the former "Girls Next Door" star unloads on her mom Patti in the most dramatic way possible. The estranged duo -- who previously fought on Wilkinson's own reality show, "Kendra on Top" -- scream at each other during a exercise called "To Knot or Not," where Patti reveals why she doesn't believe her daughter and Hank Baskett should be together. "I get the impression and feeling that you hate me," Patti says, before Kendra pretty much proves her right. "The devil has eaten your soul," she shouts at her mother like a preacher. "You sell us out to the tabloids, what the hell is your problem?! You take our problems and put them out there. Right after I thought my husband cheated on me, you sell my tears to the damn tabloids!

This Week in TV News is a compliment to the Week in Review feature, which will now be focused on film news.
AMC has guaranteed two seasons to the prequel companion series of The Walking Dead, as per THR. The announcement was made earlier this week, and comes as somewhat unsurprising news. The Walking Dead continues to be one of the channel’s highest rated shows, with its popularity showing no signs of waning as the show’s fifth season rolls along. In addition, AMC has found similar commercial and critical success with Better Call Saul, its new series that is itself a spinoff of Breaking Bad.
There’s no set title for the series as of yet, and working titles have included Fear The Walking Dead and Cobalt. The first season, much like the show that spawned this spinoff, will consist of six episodes, with creator Robert Kirkman working...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

Hank Pym not being Ultron's creator in Avengers: Age of Ultron is one major change, but now it seems like we should expect another. Based on the footage description for the movie (which you can read by clicking here), it sounds as if Tony Stark will be responsible only for the creation of the Ultron A.I. and not his first physical form. What you see below appears to be the first crude body that the villain builds for himself when he attacks Earth's Mightiest Heroes for the first time in Avengers Tower. Talk about a Frankenstein feel, eh? What do you guys think? Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, James Spader, and Samuel L. How do you solve a problem like the X-Men continuum? If you’re Bryan Singer, charged with marrying two casts and two timelines in a converging comic book epic, you just sort of don’t. Rather than wasting time attempting to atone for the plot-holes and errors created by the franchise’s careless time-keeping, Singer instead challenges the audience just to accept the film as a by-product of its source material. After all, nobody cares in the comics when details are retconned and origins changed in the same timeline, so why should they when it is translated to screen?
Had Singer got lost in that particularly hopeless quagmire, we would not have got to see this hugely intriguing, highly entertaining affair that trades off some of the socio-cultural tension of First Class to embrace a Godzilla like nuclear age allegory, even with a direct nod to Oppenheimer himself.

From Amy Acker to James Frain, we celebrate Grimm’s habit of filling its supporting cast with geek favourites…
Read our look-back at the careers of Grimm co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, here.
When Grimm’s makers were looking for their Nick Burkhardt, the job was to cast someone with all the requirements of a leading man, but none of the distracting ‘wasn’t he in that other thing?’ baggage. In David Giuntoli, whose TV appearances had until then largely been confined to one-off roles in comedies and dramas including Grey’s Anatomy and Ghost Whisperer (the latter produced, not at all coincidentally, by Grimm co-creator Jim Kouf), they found their guy.
With Giuntoli in place, and a solid cast of regulars around him including Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Russell Hornsby, Reggie Lee and Claire Coffee, it was time to fill in the guest roles.

We’re getting close to the end of the wild ride that’s been ‘American Horror Story: Coven,’ so needless to say, some people died tonight. Actually, scratch that— many people died tonight. Don’t read on if you don’t want to know who bit it!
American Horror Story has never shied away from horrifyingly graphic massacres, and they nearly outdid themselves in “Protect the Coven.” It was madness. Plus, find out who is headed to Disney World (this is not a joke) below!

Grimm Episode 310
“Eyes of the Beholder”
Written By: Thomas Ian Griffith
Directed By: Peter Werner
Original Airdate: 10 January 2014
In This Episode…
High schooler Jared is flirting with Joy, his girlfriend and waitress at a diner on the “rough side of town.” Her boss is getting annoyed so Jared heads out to wait for Joy at her house. In the parking lot, he sees a patron and his girlfriend getting the shit beat out of them by three thugs. Terrified, Jared hops in his car (his sister’s car actually) and races from the scene. Having seen about a thousand episodes of Law & Order, this seems like your basic set up for a gangbanger story line.
The guy, Alonzo, is beaten to death and his girlfriend Mercedes is in critical condition when she is rushed to the ER. Nick and Hank catch the case (of course) and talk to Joy. Alonzo...

"American Horror Story: Coven" is on hiatus until January 8th, but to keep you warm until then, we have a preview of Episode 3.10, "The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks," and a few hints of what's coming.
Per usual, exec producer Ryan Murphy chatted with EW following last night's episode and shared the following info about what we can expect in the remaining four episodes:
Will we learn more about the witch hunters and that world?
Yes. Obviously now that the Corporation’s plant is dead, we get much more into that when we come back from the winter break.
The big question is: Is Queenie dead?
Everyone wants to know that and I’m not saying, but we do talk about what happens to her body in Episode 10 so keep watching.
It seems like Cordelia and Misty are building a bond. Will that continue?

The 1986 monster sequel King Kong Lives was a flop for producer Dino De Laurentiis, but a source of remarkable details for us...
Producer Dino De Laurentiis assembled an all-star cast and gathered a colossal budget for his 1976 remake of King Kong. Once again a story about a giant ape transported to New York and running amok, the 1976 King Kong overcame its production difficulties - including a malfunctioning 40ft tall mechanical ape designed by Carlo Rambaldi - and became a sizeable hit.
A decade later, De Laurentiis decided that it was finally time to make a sequel to King Kong, and brought back director John Guillermin (not to mention a much smaller budget of $10m) to make King Kong Lives. Unfortunately, by the middle of the 80s, nobody seemed to be particularly keen on seeing another giant ape movie - especially one full of countryside...

American Horror Story: Coven Episode 103
“The Replacements”
Written By: James Wong
Directed By: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Original Airdate: 23 October 2013
In This Episode...
The coven is getting new neighbors: Joan Ramsay and her son Luke. Joan is a religious zealot who is offended when she sees the girls watching Luke unpack boxes. Nan and Madison later bring over a welcome cake. Nan is sweet as can be, but Madison really sluts it up and doesn’t veil her flirting. She is offended that Luke seems more interested in plain-Jane Nan. Joan is furious when she sees Madison and demands both the girls leave. Madison picks up the cake knife and “throws it” (with her mind) at Joan, missing her on purpose. Joan screams at them to leave, and on the way out, her curtains go up in flames. “I didn’t know you could do that,” Nan whispers. “I didn’t either,...

American Horror Story Episode 302
“Boy Parts”
Written By: Tim Minear
Directed By: Michael Rymer
Original Airdate: 16 October 2013
In This Episode...
Cordelia wakes the girls for morning gathering, and insists Fiona join them. Morning gathering, as far as I can tell, is basically like an AA meeting. The festivities are interrupted by homicide detectives who want to talk to Zoe and Madison about the frat party. The girls were the last ones seen with the frat brothers, and the detectives suspect the girls messed with the bus. Of course, they have no proof, but they do have a photo of Zoe leaving the hospital around the same time that that one frat boy died... in a remarkably similar fashion as her boyfriend Charlie. Zoe loses it, hysterically admitting to everything, including that it was all done with witchcraft. This makes Cordelia’s explanation of a psychological break completely plausible. Fiona comes...

"American Horror Story: Coven" puts two intriguing storylines into motion with "Boy Parts" -- a witchy war and a "Groom of Frankenstein" idea. Plus there's a sex scene in a fertility storyline that is either sexy or total nightmare fuel, depending on how you feel about snakes.
The War
In her quest to be young and beautiful forever, Fiona is holding Madame Lalaurie captive in the house in order to find out what happened to her. It turns out Marie Laveau gave her an immortality elixir, rounded up a mob, strung up her daughters and husband and then buried Lalaurie alive.
Fiona hunts down Marie Laveau, who is a running a salon in the 9th ward. There's an interesting conversation about a slave in Salem being the one who brought magic powers to the U.S., meaning all Caucasian witches are descendants of this slave and her powers that she...

Orphan Black
Michiel Huisman ("Treme," "Nashville") Peter Outerbridge ("Nikita") and Ari Millen ("Rookie Blue") have joined the cast of the second season of BBC America's "Orphan Black". The new series is slated to premiere in April.
Huisman plays rugged outdoorsman Cal Morrison, Outerbridge plays the mercurial modern-day cowboy Henrik “Hank” Johannsen, and Millen plays a cunning predator with a dark edge named Mark [Source: THR]
Untitled Cameron Crowe Project
Jay Baruchel has joined the cast of Cameron Crowe’s untitled romantic comedy at Sony Pictures. Baruchel would play the stepbrother of Bradley Cooper's lead character.

Chicago – It’s been close to 50 years since 11/22/1963, the day when a certain American innocence was lost with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In time for that anniversary, is the excellent film overview entitled “Parkland.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Parkland” is also the name of the hospital in Dallas, Texas, that Kennedy was taken to after an assassin’s bullet severed half his skull. The film focuses on that hospital’s emergency staff, the president’s bodyguards, the brother of accused gunman Lee Harvey Oswald and dressmaker Abraham Zapruder – an innocent home moviemaker who captured the most crucial eight seconds of the assassination, including the fatal headshot. The film, written and directed by Peter Landesman and produced by Tom Hank’s Playtone Company, is a precisely and reverently done history lesson as to the events and chaos that surrounded the street shooting of a modern president. The cast is up to the challenge of the re-creation,...

As the curtain comes down on 5 seasons of near flawless television, thoughts immediately turn to the shows legacy. How will the show be remembered? As the greatest of all time? Over hyped? The truth is the importance of this show cannot be overstated, not only as a series but it has changed the medium forever. I feel so lucky right now.
Some variation on that sentiment was repeatedly uttered by the divine Betsy Brandt both times I sat down with her -- first, this past July after The Michael J. Fox Show presented at The Television Critics Summer Press Tour, and then following Breaking Bad's Emmy win for Best Drama and Best Supporting Actress.
But as every single person associated with AMC's series has proven, luck has nothing to do with it. One can not luck into the kind of success they've all experienced. The accolades and industry demand for each of the actors, writers and directors who've spent five years making Breaking Bad the most celebrated show currently on television must be declared to be the result of hard work, careful planning and a fastidious focus.
All of that comes to an end this Sunday, however, and to say Breaking Bad is going out on a high note will forever...

When Breaking Bad left us before the midseason break, the question wasn’t whether Walt would realize that brother-in-law/DEA officer Hank was onto him, but when that would happen. And then, the logical follow-up: Would TVLine reimburse me for my season-long Valium prescription? Because I would certainly need it if the back half of the season were as teeth-grittingly tense as the first half.
But the AMC drama’s midseason premiere surprised me by wasting no time and dealing with its biggest dangling plot point straightaway – not to mention letting us in on whether or not Walt’s cancer is back.

A German librarian has written a book on how The Simpsons has changed the way gay people are perceived. I’m always mixed about The Simpsons and its heavy usage of stereotypes, but it hasn’t shied away from repeatedly showing gay people as just part of Springfield’s landscape.
A steel mill has to have the most uncomfortably warm dance floor.
On the other hand, GLAAD is angry with Showtime’s Ray Donovan for its pilot where the Hollywood fixer worked for a star spotted picking up a transgender woman. Despite doing great work with gay, lesbian and bisexual characters, Donovan is part of what GLAAD identifies as part of a bad trend of depicting transgender people as subjects of mockery and disgust. I’m surprised to see House of Lies in the condemnations, my initial impression was that it had a potentially strong transgender storyline with the son.

Los Angeles — There's no summer break anymore for broadcast networks, with overachieving cable competitors regularly airing new series instead of succumbing to rerun laziness.
That's why NBC has "America's Got Talent," Fox is airing "So You Think You Can Dance" and ABC scheduled the flirty "Mistresses." Over at CBS, star students have teamed up for the ambitious "Under the Dome."
The 13-episode drama series debuting Monday is based on the best-selling Stephen King book and includes heavyweights Steven Spielberg, Neal Baer ("ER," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), Jack Bender ("Lost") and comic-book and TV scribe Brian K. Vaughan as executive producers.
Such firepower counts in this increasingly competitive season, said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler. It's even more crucial because CBS is rolling the dice with a drama, atypical first-run network fare in June.
"There is a lot of original content on-air during the summer, and there will be choices for viewers.

I was a big fan of ABC‘s Zero Hour when I previewed the pilot last summer, and was disappointed that they were holding it until midseason. When they finally did air it, they had made a few changes with a few scenes, but it was still the cool Indiana Jones-feeling, Nazi hating, twisty fun mysterious show I remembered, complete with creepy baby.
Of course I was horribly disappointed when ABC canceled the series after airing just three episodes, but over-the-moon happy when they announced that they would air all 13 episodes this summer.
Well that happy day is now finally nearly upon us, as Zero Hour returns Saturday at 8/7c with a two-hour premiere. But… it isn’t the pilot. In fact, they are picking up where they left off, and will be airing episodes four and five on Saturday. If you didn’t see the first three episodes when...

We were so disappointed that Zero Hour wasn’t given more time to gain an audience, but at least were pleased when ABC announced that the entire first season would air this summer, including the first three episodes that aired in the winter.
Happily, ABC has now paired those episodes with unaired episodes from another gone-too-soon show from earlier this season, 666 Park Avenue, according to Deadline. As you know from the SciFiMafia.com Spring and Summer Primetime TV Schedule and the SciFiMafia.com Calendar, Zero Hour premieres Saturday, June 15 at 8/7c. 666 Park Avenue will join Zero Hour on June 22, following it at 9/8c and continuing weekly for three more weeks.
Excellent news, I’m So looking forward to summer Saturdays, these were great shows; thanks to ABC for airing the rest of the episodes.
