The recently released Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, was a modern rethinking of the noir genre with references to old cinema – and audiences fell in love with it. However, in the sixth episode, fans were treated to such a twist that it seemed that the showrunner had simply left at that moment, leaving ChatGPT to finish writing the plot.
If that unexpected twist ruined the magic of Sugar's noir for you, these five TV shows will restore your faith in the genre.

Cruella and Richard Jewell star Paul Walter Hauser is one of the most exciting additions to The Fantastic Four, but as we write this, there's still no word on who he's playing.
Mole Man is the most popular suggestion among comic book fans, though it's just as easy to imagine him voicing H.E.R.B.I.E., for example. Marvel's First Family has many allies and enemies on the page so Hauser could ultimately be portraying any number of characters in the upcoming reboot.
Talking to Screen Rant, Hauser broke his silence on joining The Fantastic Four and confirmed he's playing someone from the comics.
"[All] I can say is that I, in some iteration, am in the movie The Fantastic Four until I get fired or recast. So I can't say anything about the character I'm playing, but know that it is in the sort of lexicon and mythology of The Fantastic Four stories,...

Are we headed for a bon marché?
A new class of finished films and packages (unmade movies with big stars and a director attached) will travel to Cannes this week in search of cash and homes with the studios, streamers and global indie players.
The 2024 Cannes market comes equipped with some interesting contradictions. Stateside, the content buying machine is fraught. Major media stock prices are getting hammered day by day, and a new age of austerity has gripped the once free-spending tech giants. At the same time, distributors paralyzed by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes need content to fill their slates for the end the year and the top of 2025.
“We’d agree that finished film volume isn’t as high due to the strikes, but Cannes is a much better setting for packages to begin with,” one top sales agent told Variety. “These movies can get financed out of the international marketplace,...

Last summer, Paul Schrader was about to start shooting “Oh, Canada,” his adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel about a troubled artist taking stock of his life, when the major actors union went on strike. For a second, it looked like all that hard work, passion and planning might be for nothing — with performers on the picket lines and major studios holding out on their contract demands, it was hard to see how cameras would ever roll on the low-budget indie.
“Everything shut down,” said Brian Beckmann, the CFO and COO of Arclight Films, which is selling international rights to the film. “We were in this position where we had spent all this money and secured all this talent and we weren’t sure we could move forward until the strikes were over.”

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin. The series, which will be titled The Penguin, is set to be released later this year and we have just today received some interesting casting rumors!
Namely, we know that Farrell is reprising his role and that the series will focus on Penguin taking over Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film) at the hands of the Riddler.

We didn't initially pay a huge amount of attention to rumours that Mark Strong had been cast in The Penguin in a mystery role, but his trainer has now let the cat bat out of the bag in a series of Instagram posts.
Giacomo Farci was asked if it's true he worked on The Batman follow-up, promoting him to reply, "Yes, I've trained Mark for it." Asked if he could reveal who the Shazam! star is playing, Farci said, "I cannot answer to this question but I'm sure you will figure it out."
Needless to say, we're guessing he won't be reprising his role as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a villain whose story ended on a largely unsatisfying note thanks to an unresolved cliffhanger in both the first movie and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
So, who has Strong been cast as in The Penguin?

Sugar’s investigation into the disappearance of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), the granddaughter of producer Jonathan (James Cromwell), led to him meeting Melanie (Amy Ryan), Olivia’s former stepmother. The two have bonded, and he’s turned to her at points, but he can’t tell her his secret, as much as he wants ...

Filmmaker Andrew Haigh’s follow up to the incredible All Of Us Strangers will reportedly be Belly Of The Beast – a true crime thriller set in 1980s New York.
Despite releasing back in January, there’s every chance that at the end of this year, writer-director Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers (pictured) will still hold the crown for film of 2024. At the very least it will be on lots of shortlists, and as such, interest has been running high over what Haigh would do next. Now that project has been revealed – a period drama-thriller called Belly Of The Beast – we’re very excited indeed.
According to Deadline, the project is headed to Cannes next week with the director and stars already attached. Given the acclaim surrounding Haigh’s last film and the involvement of both Colin Farrell and Ben Stiller, we’d imagine that this will be a popular package deal indeed.

Colin Farrell is a what on “Sugar”?! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Apple TV+ show’s big twist, how that might impact its Emmy chances and more.
Stop here if you care about “Sugar” spoilers. Your last warning. Ok. The sixth episode of the noir detective drama revealed that John Sugar (Farrell) is an alien who’s been dispatched to Earth with his alien pals to observe and report on humans. It’s a big swing that’s been divisive among critics and completely changes the show. But does it change its Emmy hopes? The series has been an underdog contender — it’s in 11th place in the odds in drama series — while Farrell has been sitting in third place in the drama actor rankings. As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad press. With a million...

Being recognized as one of the most talented young actresses of the 21st century, Mia Goth presents horror as her trademark genre. Starting from A Cure for Wellness (2016), the actress has been proving that she impeccably fits in the genre, continuing the fruitful trend of her career with the incredibly successful 2022 slashers X and Pearl.
However, there is a lesser-known 2023 horror movie, where Goth fully reveals her potential as the genre’s queen. Despite its sophisticated nature, it definitely appears to be a must-watch for all fans of the actress and for the most curious cinephiles.
Set in an isolated island resort, it focuses on the married couple, the writer in a creative crisis and his unhappy wife, coming there on a vacation. They meet Goth’s mysterious Gabi, who starts to show them the other side of the resort alongside her husband.

Colin Farrell has gained attention for his leading roles in mainstream and indie projects since the 2000s, rising to prominence. Having made his film debut in the 1998 movie, The War Zone, he got his breakthrough from Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi movie, Minority Report (2002).

Given that his filmography is filled with interesting projects, Farell has strangely credited his 2009 film, Ondine as the one which changed his life the most.
Ondine is One Project That Heavily Impacted Colin Farrell’s Life
In a recent interview with Lauren Veneziani for his series Sugar, the 47-year-old actor gave an insight into his past projects. At one point, he reflected on which project has remained with him the most over the years, and to anyone’s surprise, it’s his box-office flop film, Ondine.

The evolution of filmmaking spanning the past 50 years has been drastic. An actress as accomplished as Scarlett Johansson would obviously be aware of those changes while picking out potential scripts and sniffing out critical hits. And among all the actors whose films would be worthy of being rebooted or remade, there couldnʼt be a more affluent actor than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fortunately, Johanssonʼs need to establish herself in her own space rather than gain success by walking in someone elseʼs shadow saved her from falling into the trappings of the remake curse.

Have you ever given thought, to which of Steven Spielberg’s works could unite the creative minds behind X-Men ’97 and the very creator of Deadpool? Not to give away too much of the suspense, but it is none other than the dark and cerebral science fiction drama Minority Report.
The film, starring Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, was so brilliantly shot and inventive that even Deadpool’s Rob Liefeld, who ranked it among his three best Spielberg experiences, tweeted his admiration for it. Liefeld empathized with those who found the film “too dark”, a sentiment shared in his circles at the time of its release.

[Editor’s note: The following includes spoilers for “Sugar.”]
“Sugar” is a neo-noir television series set in modern-day Los Angeles, featuring private investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell), who, in addition to being very good at his job, is also a huge movie buff. Sugar’s latest case, to find the missing granddaughter of legendary movie producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), only sends him even further down the path of Hollywood lore.
Throughout the eight episodes of Season 1, Sugar’s journey to find Olivia reminds him of scenes from some of his favorite classic films, which are intercut into the series as if we are seeing little flashes of what is racing through Sugar’s mind.
“It was all done after the fact, so I had no idea until I saw it how many [and] which clips [they used],” Farrell told IndieWire, adding he was pleasantly surprised to see himself juxtaposed with some of his all-time favorite films, like “Sunset Boulevard” and “The Maltese Falcon.

The wildest twist on TV this year is hiding in the least likely place –– Apple TV+’s Sugar. When the first looks at Colin Farrell’s noir drama set in Hollywood came out, it seemed pretty straightforward. Farrell plays John Sugar, an Old Hollywood-obsessed detective looking for the missing granddaughter of a famous filmmaker. Walking through the equally seedy worlds of Los Angeles dive bars and obscenely wealthy mansions, Sugar is a progressive embodiment of the noir movies he loves — and Farrell is fantastic in the role.

This article contains major spoilers for Sugar episode 6.
Virtually every “spoiler-free” Sugar review that ran in advance of the Colin Farrell-starring detective series’ premiere on Apple TV+ mentioned that the project featured a big twist. While one might consider it poor taste to “spoil” that a story even contains an enormous twist, it’s hard to blame the reviewers on this one.
The twist at the center of Sugar is so wild, so out-of-left-field, and so paradigm-shifting, that it’s almost impossible not to acknowledge. It would be like trying to write about Clifford the Big Red Dog while avoiding the fact that it contains a big red dog. The problem with letting the audience know that a big twist was coming, however, is that it took forever for the show to reveal it. Four whole weeks after the two-part April 5 premiere, in fact!

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Sugar Season 1 Episode 6 “Go Home.”] All season has been building to the final moments of the May 3 episode of Sugar: Colin Farrell‘s character reveals his secret. First, we get a look at Sugar fighting (he also kills Stallings and the others), then Henry (Jason Butler Harner) comes to him to treat his injuries because he can’t go to the hospital. Then, Sugar confronts Ruby (Kirby) about tipping off Stallings, and she tells him it’s for the mission. It all leads up to him injecting something into his own neck and the reveal that he’s an alien! Updated with entertainment comments: Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a shoutout to upcoming Wolfs set for theatrical release this fall, Sony distributing. Comedy series Palm Royale with Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern, and Colin Farrell-starring detective skein Sugar also got a plug. Apple’s entertainment business, Apple Studios and Apple TV+ are buried in the Services division but it’s the only one Cook routinely comments on during Apple’s post-earnings conference calls, like today’s.
He keeps a running tally each quarter of Apple TV+ award nominations and wins (480) for Apple TV+ productions since the service launched. “We have some incredible theatrical releases coming this year, including Wolfs, which reunites George Clooney and Brad Pitt,” he said.
Services grew 14% in the current June quarter and CFO Luca Maestri see a similar bump in the current June quarter.
