Richard Riordan, the two-term Los Angeles mayor who helped rebuild the city in the wake of the Rodney King riots in 1992 and the devastating Northridge earthquake two years later, has died. He was 92.
Riordan died Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, his daughter Patricia Riordan Torrey announced.
A venture capitalist and moderate Republican, Riordan served as mayor from 1993 — succeeding the retiring Tom Bradley and winning his first election ever — until 2001, when term limits ended his run. He defeated legislator Tom Hayden, former husband of Jane Fonda, to be re-elected.
Riordan also was mayor during the 1994-95 O.J. Simpson criminal murder trial that riveted L.A. and the world.
“Mayor Richard Riordan loved Los Angeles and devoted so much of himself to bettering our city,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “He always had a place in his heart for the children of L.A. and worked to improve how...

Analysis: Larry Elder is on his way to nearly matching Arnold Schwarzenegger’s share of the vote in the last California recall election, but that’s just about where comparisons to 2003 end.
In fact, in a post-mortem on Wednesday, some Republicans are even blaming Elder for the shellacking that the pro-recall side took, handing Governor Gavin Newsom ample material to work with given Elder’s long history in the world of Am radio bombast.
Ron Nehring, the former chairman of the California Republican Party, said at a Sacramento Press Club event that Elder was “a life preserver thrown to Gavin Newsom.” Just as ballots were being mailed to all of the state’s registered voters, Newsom’s side was seizing on Elder’s past statements, from opposition to a minimum wage to comments about women.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has prevailed over a recall effort aimed at removing him from the state’s top job.
Less than an hour after polls closed Tuesday night, The Associated Press and CNN projected the majority of California voters voted “no” in the recall election. The only time a California governor has been recalled was in 2003, when film star and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger unseated then-Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat.

Exclusive: CNN is unveiling a slate of new limited series podcasts for this fall, including one focusing on California’s 2003 recall and another hosted by Clarissa Ward, who recently was reporting on the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan.
Other podcasts include ones hosted by Harry Enten, longtime podcaster Aminatou Sow, and a companion series from Hln.
With California Gov. Gavin Newsom facing a recall on Sept. 14, the Total Recall: California’s Political Circus podcast, hosted by Dana Bash, will look back at what happened in 2003, when voters ousted Gov. Gray Davis in favor of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although this year’s recall has its share of celebrity candidates and fame seekers, more than 100 candidates sought the governorship in the 2003 race. Bash, CNN’s chief political correspondent, “will unpack the scandal, partisanship, and celebrity of the Golden State’s 2003 recall election – and explore what it might have forecasted about politics today,” according to CNN.

Bill Prady is probably best known as the co-creator of “The Big Bang Theory.” But four years before the launch of that sitcom mega-smash, Prady — on a lark — was among the motley crew of candidates who ran in the 2003 California recall election circus. Now, as California faces another recall drama, this time an effort to remove Gov. Gavin Newsom, there isn’t nearly the same kind of bedlam that led to the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
And this time out, Prady is less amused. “I think the Newsom thing is yet another example of politicians exploiting the ‘red team/blue team’ sports nature of politics for their own benefit,” he says. “The GOP so loathes the combination of the supermajority in Sacramento with a Democratic governor that they’re trying to use Covid to change that.”

Hollywood studios are lining up to support Gavin Newsom and the effort to defeat the Sept. 14 recall, as executives and the companies themselves pour money into his campaign and a committee set up to ensure that he remains in office.
Their support is hardly a surprise: With the “No” to the recall leading in the polls, and Newsom already having garnered significant industry backing for his reelection bid, studio support for his effort to fight off the recall is far from surprising.
But Newsom’s tenure hasn’t been without some significant industry friction: Last November, The Walt Disney Co. went public with its unhappiness over the governor’s refusal to allow theme parks to reopen. CEO Bob Chapek said.the company was “extremely disappointed” over the continued closure, while executive chairman Bob Iger resigned from a task force on the state’s recovery.

“California has bigger issues than pronouns,” gubernatorial candidate says
California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner accepted Joy Behar’s apology for misgendering her multiple times during Friday’s episode of “The View,” taking a swipe at so-called “cancel culture” in the process.
Behar found herself in hot water when she misgendered Jenner multiple times while talking about Jenner’s announcement to run for California governor. After the show took a commercial break, Behar returned with an apology, seemingly realizing her mistake and blaming it on a lack of sleep. “So first of all, let me apologize for my pronoun mixup. I think I just didn’t get enough sleep last night,” Behar said. “I had no intention of mixing them up, and I tried to correct it immediately, but whatever, it just came out. So I’m sorry if anybody was upset by that.”

Caitlyn Jenner announced that she has filed initial paperwork to run for governor in California.
The news comes as state election officials appear ready to approve a recall election of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Jenner plans to make a formal campaign announcement in the coming weeks. In running, Jenner has arguably become the most prominent transgender person to seek elected office in the country (transgender politicians like Sarah McBride in Deleware and Danica Roem in Virginia have won state legislature seats in recent years).

Caitlyn Jenner has filed paperwork to run for governor of California in an expected recall election of Gavin Newsom.
“This isn’t the California we know. This is Gavin Newsom’s California, where he orders us to stay home but goes out to dinner with his lobbyist friends,” Jenner said in a statement, referring to Newsom’s pandemic visit to the posh eatery French Laundry.
Jenner, 71, is the first celebrity name to declare for the recall election, which is not yet official. Organizers are expected to have gathered enough signatures to put a measure on the ballot later this year to oust Newsom.
Jenner, a Republican, is being backed by a campaign team that includes Trump campaign veterans, including pollster Tony Fabrizio, the former president’s pollster, according to Axios. Brad Parscale, a friend, has helped her assemble a team but will not have an official title, Axios reported.

Facing an almost certain recall and harsh criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and vaccination rollout, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was in full campaign mode tonight in his third annual State of the State speech.
“The state of our state remains determined,” the former San Francisco mayor said from a near-empty Dodger Stadium on Tuesday. “I remain determined!”
“We won’t change course just because of a few naysayers and dooms-dayers,” the governor added in a clear jab at political rivals like former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
“So to the California critics, who are promoting partisan power grabs and outdated prejudices and rejecting everything that makes California great, we say this: We will not be distracted from getting shots in arms and our economy booming again,” the often-rushed and off-kilter Newsom declared in what likely will be one of his stump-speech applause lines once the looming recall...

Hustler founder Larry Flynt has died at 78. The Washington Post confirmed the news with his brother Jimmy. No cause of death was given.
Flynt made his fortune with Hustler magazine and associated businesses, but he made a name for himself by challenging cultural norms. Injured by an assailant’s bullet in 1978, he also became known for his gold wheelchairs.
In 1988, Flynt won a the landmark US Supreme Court case, Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, after having been sued by Rev. Jerry Falwell for an ad parody that had appeared in Hustler. In a unanimous ruling, the High Court declared that public figures cannot recover damages for “infliction of emotional distress” based on parodies. The historic First Amendment decision held that the interest in protecting free speech surpasses the interest in protecting public figures’ emotions and reputations.
In 1996, Columbia Pictures released The People vs. Larry Flynt with Woody Harrelson in the title role.

The series, which hails from Nick Santora and Skydance Television, is described as a global spy adventure with a father and daughter at the center of the story. Monica Barbaro is attached to play Schwarzenegger’s daughter in the show. Should it go to series, it would mark the first regular television role of Schwarzenegger’s career. Santora created the show and will executive produce as part of his overall deal with Skydance TV. He is also attached as showrunner on fellow Skydance show “Jack Reacher,” which is set up at Amazon. Schwarzenegger is executive producing alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost for Skydance.

Less than 24 hours after Joe Biden declared his Presidential campaign very much alive with a trove of Super Tuesday comeback victories, the former Vice President is celebrating tonight with Hollywood A-listers.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman, Bad Robot’s Brian Weinstein, Sony-Screen Gems’ Eric Paquette and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti were some of the guests at a fundraiser at the Beverly Hills home of philanthropist and former Paramount boss Sherry Lansing, according to a source who was there. Co-hosts included John Emerson and Kimberly Emerson, Sim Farar and Debra Farar and Cynthia Telles and Joe Waz.
As Biden’s campaign sees a big boost in new bundlers and donors with momentum swinging his way as the more moderate alternative to Bernie Sanders, the event sold out and had to be moved outside at Lansing’s pad to accommodate all the 350 or so guests. Tickets started at $1,000 per person.

Clint Eastwood has a career that spans six decades. He survived the fall of Old Hollywood, the rise and fall of New Hollywood, and the economic rise and moral fall of Corporate Hollywood. He starred in a silly western TV series, an insane Italian western trilogy, and a series of serious revisionist westerns. He has deconstructed himself on multiple occasions. He directed a film in Japanese. He sang the freaking theme to Gran Torino, and who cares if his singing voice sounds kind of like Kirk Van Houten singing “Can I Borrow a Feeling?” He’s Clint Motherf—ing Eastwood.

How did Arnold Schwarzenegger manage to hide the fact that he'd sired a child with his housekeeper while holding down perhaps the most high-powered job there is in a state where gossiping about people in power is an industry?
Any Hollywood insider can tell you, there's one person who's done more than anyone else to shield Schwarzenegger from negative publicity. Marty "Mad Dog" Singer is an attorney to the stars, a so-called Hollywood pit bull who's amassed a fortune by going after publications that print -- or even just consider printing -- unflattering things about his clients.
His Century City firm, Lavely & Singer, counts among its roster of past and present clients the likes of Britney Spears, Bruce Willis, Celine Dion, Jim Carey, Sylvester Stallone and Eddie Murphy. As Arnold Schwarzenegger makes plans to resurrect his career in Hollywood after seven years in the California governor's mansion, the 63-year-old actor-turned-politician-turned-actor again made the startling revelation that he'd fathered a child with a member of his family's household staff.
In recent weeks, Schwarzenegger's name had cropped up in a number of potential projects, some more realistic than others, from the Brad Furman-directed drama "Cry Macho" and a fifth "Terminator" to a wild rumor about a sequel to the 1988 comedy "Twins." The question now is how, if at all, Arnie's revelation — following news that his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver, was leaving him — will affect his plans to kick-start a movie career.
"This will, essentially, go away," said David Poland of Movie City News.

After 25-year marriage the newly retired California governor and Kennedy clan member have decided to split
One of the most powerful, and unlikely, political pairings in America has fractured with the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have separated only weeks after he ended his term as governor of California.
The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the split, said Shriver had moved out of the couple's Brentwood mansion after they had led almost entirely separate lives for several weeks. Since he stood down as governor, the former bodybuilder and actor has been trying to rekindle his career in entertainment, while Shriver has been pursuing her charity activities.
Their 25-year marriage brought together a couple that at face value was strikingly diverse. Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announces separation from wife Maria Shriver
Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver are separating "while we work on the future of our relationship".
The announcement on Monday came four months after Schwarzenegger, an Austrian-born bodybuilder turned Hollywood action star, left office in January.
"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," Schwarzenegger, 63, and Shriver, 55, said in a statement. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together."
The couple, who met at a charity tennis tournament in 1977 and married in 1986, did not mention whether they would divorce.
"We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the centre of both of our lives," the statement said. "We consider this a private matter, and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment.

(This is written a bit late due to being slain by intestinal dragons.)

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed he will be running for re-election next year, following weeks of speculation. Privately, advisers have urged the Republican governor to declare for months, though the election isn't until November 2006, three years after he arrived in Sacramento in triumph following the historic recall of Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger told a crowd of supporters in San Diego on Friday, "I'm going to follow through with this here. I'm not in there for three years. I originally got into this to finish the job. I'm in there for seven years. Yes, I will run for governor." Schwarzenegger was immensely popular during his first year in office, but his job approval ratings have dropped sharply in recent months. A recent nonpartisan Field Poll found that just 36 per cent of California voters are inclined to re-elect Schwarzenegger.

California could be the next state to pursue production incentives under an ambitious set of proposals that could be ready early next year. Sources say Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is ready to flex his political muscle in support of the incentives, which still face resistance from lawmakers in Sacramento because of the ongoing budget crisis and the fact that film and TV production is mostly based in Southern California. A similar effort died in committee in September 2002, nine months after it was announced by then-Gov. Gray Davis and as the deficit problem mounted. That plan, which enjoyed the support of nearly every major performers union, would have provided a 15% wage-based tax credit applicable to the first $25,000 of an employee's salary on productions with budgets of up to $10 million that took place in the state. Early drafts of the new incentive package are said to be even more ambitious, though a wage-based tax credit is still believed to be one of the central tenets. Several states including New Mexico and Louisiana have benefited from innovative incentive packages that were clearly aimed at luring productions that might otherwise go abroad to save money. New York recently established production tax credits on both the state level and in the Big Apple. Since forcing Davis from office in an October 2003 recall election, Schwarzenegger has denounced the effects of runaway production but refrained from pushing an incentive package as he worked to shore up the state's finances. Many in the industry felt that it was just a matter of time before the Hollywood heavyweight came to the industry's aid, and there is increasing speculation that such a major piece of legislation would be introduced early in the year, budget permitting. The state's proposed budget will be unveiled in early January. The incentive efforts are being spearheaded by Bonnie Reiss, Schwarzenegger's point woman on runaway production, and Amy Lemisch, his appointee as executive director of the California Film Commission. Reiss could not be reached for comment, but Lemisch said Tuesday that she is working full time "studying the various incentive options that might work to address California's unique production environment."...

Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has yet to decide on whether he'll run for re-election as Governor of California - because he's too busy sorting out the state's problems. Last month marked a year since Schwarzenegger was elected to replace Gray Davis in the coveted position. And while he's been thrilled with his new political post, he's refusing to concern himself with 2006's election. He told CNN talk show host Larry King on Tuesday night, "I don't about (re-election) now. Now all I think about is the budget and... prison reform, education reform, energy reform. I keep my eye on the ball, that's the most important thing and that means that I'm thinking about how I can continue moving the state forward and how can I improve the economy, how can I improve education. That's what we have to concentrate on; not about me running for re-election and all this stuff. That's in the spring and the spring is the time when I have to make the decision. Right now I only think about the budget. We still have a challenging period ahead of us."...

Semi-retired movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger marked the first anniversary of his announcement he'd be running for office in California by returning to the chat show where he shocked America. Schwarzenegger announced his bid to challenge then-California Governor Gray Davis on pal Jay Leno's The Tonight Show on August 6, 2003, and he returned on Friday to thank the late-night TV presenter for his support. Wearing a smart suit, shirt and tie, Schwarzenegger looked much more official than he did 12 months ago when he wore an open-necked shirt and a sports jacket. Schwarzenegger told Leno he was thoroughly enjoying his new role as Governor, calling the past 12 months "the best year I've had in my entire life".
