There’s a moment in 30 Beats, from first-time writer/director Alexis Lloyd, where an attractive older woman (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) is trying to seduce a young man (Ben Levin) in a spa. The young man is unaware his father has actually hired the woman, a prostitute, to be his first sexual experience. As the two sit staring at each other across a hot tub, we briefly hear their inner thoughts about just how awkward the situation is and what the hell should they do now? It’s a sweet and funny exchange because it resonates as truthful. Yet, by being the only...

Another trailer for Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn’s alien invasion flick “Branded”. Still not feeling it, but maybe your mileage will vary. Branded is a dark and mind-bending sci-fi thriller into a surreal, dystopian society where mega corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man’s quest to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world. Starring Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor, Ingeborga Dapkunaite and Max Von Sydow. Skip the donut September 7, 2012.

I should be really excited for directors Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn’s “Branded”. The film has everything I like in my movies — aliens, said aliens invading, the delightfully delightful Leelee Sobieski, and did I mention aliens invading? I love that stuff. So why do I feel so … indifferent towards “Branded”? I dunno. I’m just not feeling the movie. But maybe the trailers just aren’t capable of selling the film’s quality. Let’s hope that’s the case. But hey, judge for yourself by watching the new trailer for “Branded”. There has been a lot of talk and even documentaries on how America has a problem with obesity and is consumed by corporate entities. I think there is a general fear of becoming mindless and more of a puppet with no true form of identity or individuality. To just become a product or a consumer can be a disturbing thing. That is what interests me in the trailer for a film coming out this September called Branded. Yahoo Movies has premiered the trailer and I gotta tell ya, those monsters look really strange & creepy. Rome -- Italy's Minister of Culture said he wants to pick the president of the jury at the next Venice Film Festival, arguing that the state's support gave him that right and charging that festival artistic director Marco Mueller's choice of auteur Quentin Tarantino as president of the last jury was "elitist."
In an interview published in Friday's edition of the Italian news weekly Panorama, Minister Sandro Bondi blasted the decision of the jury to award the festival's top prize to Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere." In the wake of the festival, which concluded Sept. 11, the Italian media charged the choice showed favoritism toward Coppola, Tarantino's former girlfriend.
Tarantino was also criticized for the jury's decision to present Tarantino's mentor, iconic independent filmmaker Monte Hellman, with a career award, and for giving two major awards to Alex de la Iglesia, a long-time friend of the 47-year-old Tarantino.

The jury at the Venice Film festival, headed up by Quentin Tarantino and including Guillermo Arriaga, Ingeborga Dapkunaite and Danny Elfman, have awarded the Golden Lion prize for Best Film to Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere.
The film stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning and tells of the emotional turbulence encountered in a popular, yet reclusive, actor’s life when his 11 year-old daughter arrives on his doorstep. Unsurprisingly Coppola drew inspiration from her own life for the film, and spoke of her father, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, saying ‘Thanks to my Dad for teaching me.’
Other prizes handed out in Venice today included the Silver Lion for Best Director which went to Álex de la Iglesia for Balada Triste de Trompeta, a film which also won its writer/director the Best Screenplay award. Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing won the Special Jury Prize and saw its star Vincent Gallo pick up the Best Actor award.

Rome -- Julie Taymor's version of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" will be the closing film at the Venice Film Festival, screening on Sept. 11, after the main awards ceremony.
Among Taymor's changes to the nearly 400-year-old classic is changing the sorcerer Propero into Prospera, a sorceress played by Oscar winner Helen Mirren.
The film's Oscar connections run deep: In addition to Mirren, the score for the film is from Oscar-winner Ellio Goldenthal, a long-time Taymor collaborator, and the costumes were designed by three-time Oscar honoree Sandy Powell. Oscar winner Francoise Bonnot edited the film.
The festival also announced the makeup of its main competition jury, which will include Mexican writer Guillermo Arriaga; Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite; Arnaud Desplechin, the French director and screenwriter; American compeposer and musician Danny Elfman; Luca Guadagnino, the Italian director and screenwriter; and Oscar=winning director Gabriele Salvatores. Hollywoodnews.com: We learned last week that Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as rival ballerinas, would open the 67th annual Venice Film Festival in September. Now we know what film will close the event.
Julie Taymor’s upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” has been tapped by festival organizers to be the closing night film. Helen Mirren leads Taymor’s ensemble, playing Prospera. She’ll be joined on screen by Russell Brand (Trinculo), Alfred Molina (Stephano), Djimon Hounsou (Caliban), and Chris Cooper (Antonio).
Venice Film Festival director Marco Mueller said Taymor’s production is “unique and exhilarating,” and added in a press release that the director displays her “trademark visual flair and creative direction.”

Just a heads up to everyone that follows these articles each Sunday. I will be in France for the Cannes Film Festival for the next two Sundays and I have no way of predicting just how exactly this article will turn out for the next two weeks. I will certainly post something wo you have a place to post, share and discuss what you watched, but my contribution may be limited.
I may just post links to the coverage of the Festival to that point as I hope to be reviewing and watching a lot of movies, but perhaps a couple of those won't get their own article and will wind up here. Nevertheless, just a heads up so you know what to expect. Now for this week's movies...

Montreal World Film Festival
The conflicts are personal and no less a bloody nightmare than clashes between large armies in the searing Russian film "War", which had its North American premieres at the Montreal (in competition) and Telluride film festivals. Young newcomer Alexei Chadov won best actor honors at Montreal in the latest film from Alexei Balabanov, who helmed the Russian boxoffice hits "Brother" and "Brother 2".
Set mostly in Chechnya and featuring in a supporting role Sergei Bodrov Jr. -- feared dead in last month's catastrophic avalanche in the North Ossetia region of the Caucasus Mountains -- "War" is brutal and superficially commercial in some aspects. Well-made and timely enough to warrant exposure to domestic foreign-film audiences, the movie's ultimate impact includes Slavic irony over the evolving morals and role-playing of sympathetic characters caught in a deadly game of rescue and revenge.
Opening with a very harsh sequence, shown mostly in long shots, of a Chechen rebel commander (Georgy Gurgulia) executing two captured Russian soldiers, "War" (in Russian and English with subtitles) immediately makes us witness to lawless bloodshed that shows the nature of conflicts in this landscape of rugged mountains and few inhabitants. Also witnessing the raw hatred and play-for-keeps tactics of the Chechen thugs are two scared-out-of-their-wits English actors, John (Ian Kelly) and Margaret (Ingeborga Dapkunaite), and two other Russian prisoners, Ivan (Chadov) and Capt. Medvedev (Bodrov). The four are thrown together in a pit and anticipate the worst.
Coming back frequently to an interview with Chadov's character after the events of the movie for commentary and insights, "War" is told in a fairly straightforward manner and achieves an acceptable level of believability despite the sometimes gung-ho final 45 minutes. Terrorized and held for ransom by the unapologetically vicious Chechen commander, John and Margaret gain nothing in the way of sympathy. But the former is allowed to leave with Chadov's almost-out-of-the-army Ivan to try to raise millions in ransom money.
Left behind to suffer from the elements and be abused by their captors are Margaret and Bodrov's injured captain. (Bodrov also played a captive of Chechens in 1996's Oscar-nominated "Prisoner of the Mountains", directed by his father.) John has no luck with officials and sells everything to raise cash, but it's not enough for the ransom. But word gets around, and he's approached by a media outlet that offers to pay him if he takes along a video camera and films the attempt to ransom the hostages.
Eventually, in an illegal and foolhardy attempt, John and new civilian Ivan take what money they have and head back to Chechnya. Armed and outfitted, they embark on what becomes an incredible adventure that John documents, even as it becomes bloody and truly horrific when they reach their remote destination.
Along with a reluctant ally in local shepherd Ruslan (Evklid Kyurdzidis) -- who helps them by leading the way across a glacier -- the duo and wasted-away captives, mission accomplished, are still in danger and must fight to escape Chechnya. Although ending in a seemingly heroic and tidy fashion, the souls of the all the survivors are scarred and the viewer shaken. One is again made aware that universal intolerance of violence is a goal to strive for, but it'll probably be a long time before they make many movies about it.
