When filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky arrived in West Memphis, Arkansas in June 1993, they came with an agenda: to document what looked like a new wave of alienated youth-turned-murderers. A few months earlier, two 10-year-olds in the U.K. had made headlines when they abducted, tortured and murdered a two-year-old, and now the filmmakers had read about the brutal murders of three eight-year-old boys ostensibly committed by teenage Satanists. It seemed like a trend. "We went down to make a film about guilty teenagers, like a real Rivers Edge,...

The Queen's biggest birthday party yet is in full effect! One day after London's grand Trooping the Colour in her honor, Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 90th birthday on Sunday with an outdoor party - and 10,000 guests in the road leading from Buckingham Palace on Sunday. (If you haven't yet seen the Lego version, please do so now. We'll wait.) It was the third main event to publicly laud the Queen in as many days, following her "neon at 90" appearance at Trooping on Saturday and a thanksgiving service at St. Paul's Cathedral on Friday. The rain cleared just before the royals appeared.

Kathy Griffin stepped into the larger-than-life shoes of Joan Rivers Monday night for a “Fashion Police” takedown of Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet. While some fans thought Griffin was the right choice for E! in a difficult situation, others dressed her down on social media.
People seemed to either love Griffin or hate her as a new co-host, alongside returning hosts Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne, and fellow newcomer Brad Goreski. He fared only slightly better, with plenty of people calling for the return of George Kotsiopoulos, who departed last year.

Looking back at 2012 on what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2012—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2012 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2012 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday...
