The Batman was released to glowing reviews in 2022 and, while it could have easily been a standalone movie similar to Joker, Warner Bros. wasted no time in enlisting filmmaker Matt Reeves for a sequel.
Rumours of a second and third movie shooting back have proven false, but The Penguin is still on track to be released later this year. The Max series will bridge the gap between The Batman and The Batman II, chronicling Ozwald Cobblepot's rise to Gotham City Kingpin.
While we've previously been told that The Penguin will launch on the streamer this "fall," the official premiere month has just been shared by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content.

If you’re going to share a whole life story, you’d better be a marvelous storyteller. That’s the challenge facing the playwrights—and the actors—in a pair of plays putting down roots this week, a Broadway revival of Samm-Art Williams’s Home and Atlantic Theater Company’s world premiere of Shayan Lotfi’s What Became of Us. Each play takes an interest in poeticizing, through narration, the cradle-to-geriatric journey of so-called ordinary American lives.
In Home, which originated with the Negro Ensemble Company in 1979 before transferring to Broadway (and receiving a 1980 Tony nomination for best play), Cephus Miles (Tory Kittles) doesn’t dream much further than his native land of Cross Roads, North Carolina, “a soil to raise strong children on.” It’s a vision of the future that Cephus’s childhood sweetheart, Pattie Mae (Brittany Inge), swiftly dismisses once she’s been away to...

Colin Farrell reprises his role as The Penguin, and it’s now confirmed that Sky will broadcast the series in the UK.
Spoilers for The Batman lie ahead.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was among the top ten highest grossing films of 2022, the superhero epic expanding on the darker tone previously established in the Christopher Nolan trilogy while sticking more closely to the comics. One of its most striking performances was a near unrecognisable Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
It wasn’t long before HBO Max began developing a spin-off centering around the character, which will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled to begin filming in 2025 for release in 2026.
Little is known about the plot of the series, although Farrell recently called it “incredibly violent“. The story will follow Oswald Copplebolt (aka The Penguin) and his rise to power. Farrell said...

There are plenty of DC-based projects currently in development, and while all eyes are on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman’ we occasionally forget that Elseworlds, which ‘The Batman’ film series and several other upcoming projects are a part of, are doing their own thing. The next big thing is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.
‘The Penguin’ is set to be a spinoff of ‘The Batman’ film series, set in the alternative universe, distinctive from the Dcu, and due to the release getting closer every day, we decided to summarize everything we know about the show.

Stepping into the spotlight next is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series.

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin. The series, which will be titled The Penguin, is set to be released later this year and we have just today received some interesting casting rumors!
Namely, we know that Farrell is reprising his role and that the series will focus on Penguin taking over Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film) at the hands of the Riddler.
The series will obviously focus on Penguin’s clash with what remains of the Falcone family,...

We didn't initially pay a huge amount of attention to rumours that Mark Strong had been cast in The Penguin in a mystery role, but his trainer has now let the cat bat out of the bag in a series of Instagram posts.
Giacomo Farci was asked if it's true he worked on The Batman follow-up, promoting him to reply, "Yes, I've trained Mark for it." Asked if he could reveal who the Shazam! star is playing, Farci said, "I cannot answer to this question but I'm sure you will figure it out."
Needless to say, we're guessing he won't be reprising his role as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a villain whose story ended on a largely unsatisfying note thanks to an unresolved cliffhanger in both the first movie and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
So, who has Strong been cast as in The Penguin?

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

At their best, films aimed at young kids can be enjoyed by adults as well and truly earn the "family movie" title. 2023 brought plenty of titles that fit the bill, from box office hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Migration" to streaming treats like "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" and "Leo."
Now it's 2024's turn to show us what it's got, and while the early months of the year tend to be pretty dry when it comes to family movies, as studios are holding them back for school vacations and long summer days, there are some fresh, funny, and heartwarming new releases on offer. From a new "Peanuts" special to a fantasy movie filled with dragon-related perils to the latest high-flying antics of "Kung Fu Panda," here are the best family movies of 2024 so far.

There are a bunch of DC projects coming up. Everyone’s excited about James Gunn’s DC Universe and his new ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman.’ But don’t forget about the Elseworlds projects, like ‘The Batman’ movie series, and other projects in the works like the upcoming ‘The Penguin’ show.
Last week, they dropped a teaser for ‘The Penguin’. It takes place a week after ‘The Batman’ and it’s all about Cobblepot making his way up in Gotham. Colin Farrell is coming back as ‘The Penguin’ – he got a lot of love for that role. In a recent interview, Farrell talked about what fans can expect from the show, and it doesn’t sound too pretty.
We wrapped it, man. We did it. Stuck a fork in it about two weeks ago. It was a long and really wonderful experience. And it’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it.

Colin Farrell is teasing The Batman spinoff Max series The Penguin and is calling it “incredibly violent.”
While promoting Apple TV+’s Sugar, the actor revealed he had just wrapped filming the first season and “stuck a fork in it two weeks ago.”
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said in an interview with MovieZine. “It’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think, it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it, but it’s incredibly violent.”
He continued, “It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status.”

Wak! Wak! Fans who wanted Matt Reeves’ The Batman to lean into the violence of Gotham City could be in for a treat when The Penguin arrives on Max. The spinoff series, starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, could find the classic villain breaking more than bones as he continues to waddle toward the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain. Speaking with MovieZine, Farrell said The Penguin is gnarlier than Reeves’ PG-13 Batman film and should be considered “incredibly violent.”

The Penguin trailer offers a glimpse into the forthcoming installment of The Batman saga ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The latest trailer for The Penguin sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, alias Penguin. The trailer delves into the DC villain’s contemplation of the posthumous recognition bestowed upon a local gangster by the community during his upbringing, prompting Cobblepot to ponder the significance of such acknowledgement. “Can you imagine being remembered like that?” Cobblepot queries an off-screen character. The trailer doesn’t spill much about the story, but it does give us quick peeks at Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.
Announced in September 2021, “The Penguin” continues the saga of Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot shortly after the events depicted in “The Batman 2023,” as he manoeuvres to assert his authority within Gotham’s criminal hierarchy. The production of the eight-episode limited series commenced in...

The sequel to the 2022 superhero hit “The Batman” may have been pushed to 2026, but fans of Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham City will have “The Penguin” to tide them over later this year.
On Friday, Max released a new trailer for the DC Studios limited series starring Colin Farrell as mobster Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin. Farrell’s Penguin was a supporting character in “The Batman” (and one of its best parts), but he gets center stage here as he tries to grab power in Gotham’s underworld after the death of his boss, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), in “The Batman.”
With Farrell again unrecognizable under layers of prosthetic makeup, Cobb tells a story about Rex Calabrese, a gangster who ran his neighborhood when he was a kid. Calabrese earned people’s respect by helping them out, and when he died, the neighborhood threw a parade in his honor. “Can you imagine,...

The Penguin is ready to take the big seat. Colin Farrell is back as The Penguin in the new trailer for his Max series, which spins out of the world of the 2022 DC film The Batman.
In the events of the film, The Penguin served as a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who meets an untimely end. Now, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City in a series that looks like DC’s answer to The Sopranos.
The series hails from DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division run by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are plotting out their own shared universe of movies and TV shows. Both The Batman and The Penguin are considered separate from those plans, and take place in their own universe under the Elseworlds banner — a nod to alternate universe stories in the DC Comics.

The bat is nowhere to be seen in the latest trailer for “The Penguin,” but that doesn’t mean that Gotham City crime is running rampant…yet.

Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.
“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.
“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

I’ve said this many times, but I state it again: I’m a super fan of the fantasy genre. Whether it’s because The Lord of the Rings saga remains my favorite after all these years or because it’s a genre that allows exploring the true immersive, escapist potential of cinema, I’ve always felt a special connection with this type of storytelling set in a completely imaginary world, full of mythical beings, breathtaking kingdoms and castles, and uniquely unforgettable creatures. Therefore, the mere fact that Damsel is an original fantasy story automatically set my expectations for this Netflix movie higher than usual.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X), Damsel follows the story of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman from a poor kingdom who sees an opportunity to change her life, as well as that of her people and family,...

Millie Bobby Brown is addressing criticism she’s been receiving for her accent.
The Stranger Things star grew up between England and the U.S. and has been criticized for the way she speaks in the projects she’s involved in. However, the young actress is firing back at those critics in a new interview.
“I’m an actor,” Brown said in an interview with Max Balegde on TikTok. “I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!”
She continued, “I can’t help that when I’m around my fiancé, or when I’m with people like Jimmy Fallon who have a very American accent, I wanna replicate it! And now I’m in England, I wanna replicate that [accent]! I don’t do it intentional, and...

When the young women lock eyes, a quiet intimacy blooms. Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) doesn’t know the unnamed girl meeting her gaze from a balcony some distance away, but she feels connected to her. Their smiles awaken flashes of mutual recognition. They share a milky complexion and gentle regard. But this stranger is more than Elodie’s mirror; she is an eerie omen of the young princess’ fate.
In Damsel, Elodie tries to escape the conventions of her own story. Trapped in a world of manners and expectations, the princess seeks adventure and longs to prove her independence. The conceit is familiar: A handful of recent films (and TV shows) have given audiences royal women eagerly subverting the tropes of medieval romances. Disney’s Brave introduced Merida, a fiery archer who brought a more overt contemporary feminism to the entertainment conglomerate’s brand. The Princess starred Joey King as...

The damsel in distress narrative device is a foundational storytelling element for the majority of people. Fairytales tell of princesses in peril and video games hide princesses in another castle. These women are treated as prizes to be won, a congratulatory gift to the men who saved these supposedly weak and helpless ladies who would have certainly perished without a man's intervention. Damsel in distress tropes date back to the ancient Greeks but the misogynistic belief that women are fragile creatures who need men to protect them is unfortunately still an intrinsically held value system for a shocking number of people. It's the grandmother of tropes like "fridging" as seen in media and literature, or more insidiously, "missing white woman syndrome" in real-life situations of women in harm's way.
Fortunately, plenty of alternative damsel characters exist to switch up the narrative. Megara in Disney's "Hercules" flipped the typical animated princess...

A medieval word with a highly specific (but often misused) meaning, “damsel” describes a young, unmarried lady-in-waiting. It’s also the broad title given many a helpless heroine in Hollywood movies — the proverbial “damsel in distress,” trussed to the train tracks or otherwise waiting to be saved. Elodie is neither of those in Netflix’s pleasantly disruptive fantasy story, which places “Enola Holmes” star Millie Bobby Brown squarely in control of her fate.
A revisionist fairy tale in which Elodie is hastily married off and served up as dragon chow to satisfy a generations-old curse, “Damsel” treats Elodie as an action hero for our less gender-rigid times. The loud-and-clear message, achieved by eliminating “distress” from the title (though it’s still an essential part of the formula): Passive damsels be damned! Here’s a woman who can fend for herself!

“There are many stories of chivalry where the heroic knight saves the damsel in distress,” a voice informs us before a single image appears on the screen. “This is not one of them.” It probably isn’t necessary to prep and/or warn viewers that Damsel, Netflix’s expensive-looking throw of the cinematic D&d dice, isn’t your typical sword-and-sorcery fantasy before it’s even started, but thanks for the heads up. For one thing, there’s no sorcery in it unless you count the magic that certain performers...

Damsel is the kind of Netflix movie that would feel right at home in the 2010s. It may be an original fairy tale of sorts, but it pulls from the same kind of girl power feminism that drove the “edgy” retellings of popular fairy tales like Snow White and the Huntsmen and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 10 years ago.
On the surface, Damsel might seem like a fresh and exciting take on a centuries old story. A young woman (Elodie) marries a prince to help her kingdom, but instead of living happily ever after, she gets sacrificed to a dragon and has to fight her way out of its lair. Despite the promise of that premise, the movie itself feels like such a shallow representation of what a story like this could be.

In our age of sprawling, ostentatious multi-film sagas about threats to imperial rule, Damsel’s mere existence as a completely standalone fantasy film almost feels like a blessing. Even better, the film is a welcome twist on the traditional princess narrative simply for giving its protagonist her agency without saddling her with too many archetypes.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s film, written by Dan Mazeau, still treads through familiar fantasy terrain for its first 20 minutes, during which we meet Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a peasant girl whose father (Ray Winstone) and stepmother (Angela Bassett) have accepted an offer from a neighboring kingdom to marry her off to a handsome prince (Nick Robinson) in exchange for riches. The marriage goes off without a hitch. Elodie even has chemistry with the prince. But then the other shoe drops, and it becomes clear that the match is part of a grim ritual that’s...

Damsel is a film starring Millie Bobby Brown. With Nick Robinson, Robin Wright, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Angela Bassett. It is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
It’s a classic story, adapted to modern times, that remains a tale of princesses, dragons, and good and evil, very evil. It’s a youth-oriented story that would be perfect for a Friday night with the whole family… if the movie had more complexity in its plot and characters. Did we like it? It wasn’t the movie of our lives, and we don’t believe it will be yours either.
Damsel Plot
By the way, the best performance in the movie is by an actress named Shohreh Aghdashloo, with a magnificent voice worthy of a dragoness. Everything seems happy and almost like a fairy tale when a young princess from an impoverished kingdom receives a marriage proposal. This would save her people from poverty.

Written by Dan Mazeau and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Damsel is based on the story of a damsel in distress. However, this distressed damsel doesn’t require any prince to save her, as she is equipped enough to save herself. Just like any other dark fantasy film—The Chronicles of Narnia or Maleficent—this film is replete with visual splendor. The most intriguing element of the lot is the wonderful cast of the movie. Casting renowned actors like Millie Bobby Brown (who is also known for her appearance in Stranger Things) has been an added advantage to the groundbreaking film.

Played by Millie Bobby Brown, the character of Elodie has been portrayed to be that of a valiant warrior who is intent on making her way out of the abyss. She is gullible enough to be tricked into believing that her nuptial ties with Prince Henry would secure...

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.
