Since premiering on May 31 (the exact cutoff date for 76th Emmys eligibility), HBO’s “The Great Lillian Hall” has become an undeniably strong contender in this year’s wide-open Best TV Movie race. In the past week alone, its Gold Derby program category odds jumped from 40/1 to 18/1 while lead and supporting cast members Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates both moved closer to predicted nominee status.
“The Great Lillian Hall” has found some of its greatest support among our team of in-house editors, more than half of whom are officially on board with it and Lange being nominated. Bates – who held 100/1 general odds until last Thursday and now sits at 62/1 – is on track to at least crack said subgroup’s movie/limited supporting actress lineup very soon.
Our editors’ consensus picks have indeed changed quite a bit in the last week, with the most noticeable developments involving newly predicted winners Richard Gadd and Claire Foy.

For the second year running, the Munich International Film Festival has secured six world premieres as part of its strategy to position the event as an attractive launchpad for international titles.
Luxembourg-born actress Desirée Nosbusch will be in Munich with her directorial debut Poison, starring Trine Dyrholm and Tim Roth.
The drama about an estranged couple who meet up nine years after their son’s death at the cemetery where he is buried is an adaptation of the Dutch dramatist Lot Vekemans’ much acclaimed 2009 play Gif (poison in Dutch). Poison is a co-production between Nosbusch’s Deal Productions, Dutch company...

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.
The glossy show is typically gorgeous, scandalous, and theatrical while the performances are all top-drawer. Hollander dazzles in the lead role as Capote, which is no mean feat considering the late, great Philip Seymour-Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Capote in 2005’s “Capote”). Jessica Lange plays the type of women you best keep your guard up around. Step carefully, or she could hurt you with a turn of phrase so gutting because it locates all your insecurities. But that’s also because these women are broken, too, and played with the rare cocktail of vulnerability, resolve, and brio that the two-time Oscar winner is known for on stage and screen.
In Paula Vogel’s (“How I Learned to Drive”) “Mother Play,” a “play in five evictions” now on Broadway as part of Second Stage Theater, Lange is Phyllis, a hardheaded, chain-smoking, martini-swilling matriarch and — oh, when hasn’t Lange played a hardheaded, chain-smoking, martini-swilling matriarch, or at least a complicated woman with a gamut of dependency and emotional issues? For Mac Quayle, composing the score for the HBO film project “The Great Lillian Hall” proved something of a departure from his most recent projects, which have included nine seasons of the FX anthology “American Horror Story,” the Fox/ABC procedural “9-1-1” and the Netflix drama “Leave the World Behind.” “Lillian Hall” tells the story of a legendary Broadway star (Jessica Lange) fearfully facing the ticking clock of time while doggedly working to defy it following a dementia diagnosis. In talking to director Michael Cristofer about the music, “we recognized this is an intimate story about Lillian Hall and this sudden dementia that she’s experiencing,” Quayle recalls. “We thought that (when) it needed some music that it shouldn’t be too big, it needed to have a little more intimate sound. Jessica Lange is superb as the fictional actress Lillian Hall, celebrated for decades as a revered star of the theater. During rehearsals for her leading role in The Cherry Orchard, she struggles to memorize lines and soon discovers the cause: early dementia. Despite this challenging theme, The Great Lillian Hall offers a poignant tribute to life’s theatricality, spotlighting Lange’s mastery in portraying vulnerability and bravura. The film gracefully transitions through rehearsals and Lillian’s personal life as she grapples with her diagnosis. Her early attempts at delivering lines are characterized by fluttery theatricality and a wavery voice but grow deeper and...

On May 31, 2024, “The Great Lillian Hall” premiered on HBO to predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Jessica Lange plays the titular character, a Broadway star battling dementia as she prepares for a big role on the Great White Way. The movie reunites Lange with her “American Horror Story” co-stars Kathy Bates and Lily Rabe, who play Lillian’s assistant and daughter, respectively. Pierce Brosnan and Jesse Williams also star.

When Emmy voters get spooked, it’s often frighteningly good. Take a tour through our photo gallery below featuring 14 of the Emmys’ scariest acting wins in the history of the TV Academy.
Of course we had to include the various wins from “American Horror Story.” The horror franchise’s various installments have thus far reaped victories for Kathy Bates as a hate-spewing witch and James Cromwell as a deranged Nazi doctor, plus Jessica Lange makes our list twice as both a murderous neighbor and a malicious sorceress.
Also making the list twice is Michael Emerson, who scared the pants off us as a serial killer in “The Practice” before making our skin crawl as the mysterious leader of the Others on “Lost.”
Another multiple-murderer to make the cut is John Lithgow for his terrifying guest role in “Dexter”.

Months before the highly anticipated third season of “Hacks” premiered, Gold Derby’s thousands of 2024 Emmy predictors collectively agreed that it poses the biggest threat to defending Best Comedy Series champion “The Bear.” As the Max series’ latest batch of episodes dropped throughout May, its standing in the main race steadily improved, with its well-received finale triggering noticeable boosts in multiple categories.
Over the past week, the share of top Best Comedy Series votes held by “The Bear” decreased by 1.2%, while that of “Hacks” grew by the same amount. Although the two programs remain separated by nearly 80 percentage points, it speaks volumes that “Hacks” is at least 1.5 points ahead of every other contender.
After simultaneously running second in their respective races for several weeks, lead and supporting “Hacks” actresses Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are now closer than ever to toppling frontrunners Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Meryl Streep...

In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is. Lange, a beauty at 75, has a face that has only grown more expressive with the years. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” that face is a map of emotion we read. Even when Lillian is being deceptive (even when she’s deceiving herself), the majesty of her feelings shines through.

Depending on how Russian your sense of humor is, Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” could be classified as either the darkest of comedies or a tragedy that sometimes manages to be mildly humorous. The play follows a past-their-prime family of Russian aristocrats who are forced to sell their eponymous orchard, which they spent most of their lives ignoring and neglecting. But once it’s time to actually part ways, they become overwhelmed by morose nostalgia as they struggle to let go of something that they assumed would always be there. It’s both a brilliant satire of wealth-induced decadence and a somber exploration of how humans struggle to say goodbye at the ends of their eras.
So it’s fitting that, whether she knows it or not, Lillian Hall’s (Jessica Lange) upcoming turn as Madame Lyubov Andreievna Ranevskaya in “The Cherry Orchard” will be her final performance. Michael Cristofer...

The actor gives an astonishing, awards-worthy performance as a stage star with dementia in a slight yet powerful TV movie
There’s an almighty performance super-powering HBO’s mysteriously handled TV movie The Great Lillian Hall, an elegant Broadway-set drama blessed with an all-consuming Jessica Lange. It’s her first film lead since 2006 (even before then it was in 1998) and it’s one that almost wasn’t hers to have. It had originally been announced in 2021 as Places, Please, with Meryl Streep headlining, an actor who has swallowed up the few meaty roles for older women in Hollywood, a sign not of her rapaciousness, of course, but of an industry’s dire lack. More roles have appeared at a glacial pace but mostly in an episodic format, a world that’s allowed Lange a route back to the limelight.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

It is a sad state of affairs in Hollywood when you can have such talented actors as Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, but the best you can do is stick them in boomer-baiting forgettable comedic contrivances like Summer Camp, the latest in a long line of movies for Keaton, who also is a producer on it, in which she is cast with female peers of similar age to mix slapschtick with attempted pathos and senior romance. It is the kind of formula you can sell with a simple pitch: Take three beloved septuagenarian Oscar winning and nominated stars and send them back to the summer camp where they bonded as kids. Hilarity and hijinks ensue, along with giving each a later-in-life regret or dead husband to add a bit of drama to the proceedings. Bingo! The mid-week matinees will be sellouts!

It felt like “Hacks” just returned (it did), but Season 3 is now over — and it wrapped up with arguably its best finale yet. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the killer finale and the Max comedy’s Emmy chances with the season in the rearview.
“Hacks” set the stage for a scintillating Season 4 (not yet ordered) in the final minutes of “Bulletproof” when Ava (Hannah Einbinder) pulls a trump card over Deborah (Jean Smart). Unlike its Season 2 ender, no one can mistake this for a series finale. The episode also capped off “Hacks'” strongest season yet, but will it be able to take down “The Bear”? The reigning Best Comedy Series champ feels unbeatable in the top category, especially with Season 3 looming, but perhaps “Hacks” can walk away with other trophies?

I am a sucker for movies about Broadway and those who spend their lives in the theatre. Of course the crown jewel of the genre is the Oscar-winning All About Eve, but there are so many others including 1933’s Morning Glory which won a young Katherine Hepburn her first Academy Award, as well as its rarely seen remake, 1958’s underrated Stage Struck. Ginger Rogers did a good one, too: Forever Female. The list goes on and on and now includes a stellar new entry, The Great Lillian Hall which gives the great Jessica Lange a challenging role worth her talents.
Premiering on HBO May 31, just barely under the wire for Emmy consideration, Lange’s performance as a stage legend facing dementia should send chills down the spine of any other contenders for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie this season. This veteran star simply knocks it out of the park.

“I thought at least once, I should try a brand new play,” reveals Jessica Lange of her return to Broadway in “Mother Play.” The acclaimed actress won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Mary Tyrone in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” but she had only ever worked on the classics when it came to theater. So this new play by Paula Vogel provided the “perfect opportunity” to originate a role on stage and present audiences with something they had never seen. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Lange portrays Phyllis in the play, a woman based on Vogel’s own mother. We see Phyllis spend decades moving her children (played by Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jim Parsons) from one run down apartment to the next, struggling to offer them proper maternal care, and battling a drinking habit.

It'll be out to watch on May 31st, which is just around the corner. Jessica Lange is perfection as the fictional actress Lillian Hall, known for decades as a revered star of the theater. During rehearsals for her starring role in The Cherry Orchard, she is having unusual difficulty memorizing her lines, and before long learns that the cause is early dementia. Despite that ominous theme, The Great Lillian Hall is a lovely tribute to life in the theater, with all its personal compromises, and a showcase for Lange, who deftly shows the character as a vulnerable woman and also displays the distinct style of Lillian the bravura actress.
Lillian is such a star that she is the key to the box office in the Broadway revival of Chekhov. The film’s trajectory takes her through rehearsals, and in and out of her personal life as she grapples with her diagnosis, in a plot driven by the question of whether she’ll make it to opening night.

Jessica Lange may have hinted at her own retirement for years, but the legendary actress is actually playing it out onscreen with her latest film “The Great Lillian Hall.”
Lange stars as the titular (fictional) iconic stage actress who grapples with her own legacy amid a dementia diagnosis. Her daughter (Lily Rabe) struggles with separating her mother Lillian from her Broadway fame, while Kathy Bates, Jesse Williams, and Pierce Brosnan round out the cast.
“I have lived my entire life in a place that creates illusions,” Lange says in the trailer as Lillian. Yet upon her cognizant decline, what’s real anymore, anyway?
“The Great Lillian Hall” is directed by Michael Cristofer. The official synopsis reads: “As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next big role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. Battling against all odds to make it to opening night,...

At this month’s Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner each unveiled passion projects they opted to finance themselves after institutional backers initially passed. This week, three auteurs make a trend — except instead of putting his own funds toward a deeply personal, sweeping epic, comedian Shane Gillis has made a lewd, bro-y workplace comedy set at a Pennsylvania tire shop.
Since getting fired from “Saturday Night Live” — before he’d even started — for offensive jokes on his podcast, Gillis has become the poster child for a decentralized, grassroots attention economy that allows some entertainers to build thriving careers without gatekeepers’ blessings. His 2021 special “Live in Austin” blew up on YouTube; the same podcast that cost him “SNL,” co-hosted with fellow comic Matt McCusker, continues apace; Gillis even self-produced his own sketch comedy series, “Gilly and Keeves,” which culminated with a feature-length special last year. “It was fun to pivot,” shares Lou Eyrich about the change of milieu from the first to second installments of FX’s anthology series “Feud.” She was the costume designer on the first season “Bette and Joan” back in 2017, and though she now mostly collaborates with Ryan Murphy as a producer, she seized on the opportunity to return as costumer for “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.” The designer describes the difference between the two sets of episodes as “going from a Hollywood movie perspective to this elite group of socialite jet-setters in New York, Manhattan, at the time, and they were the original influencers.” Gold Derby spoke with Eyrich as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV costume design panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Dabney Coleman made his Broadway debut in a brief run of A Call on Kuprin before setting up camp in the television space with roles in Kraft Suspense Theater’s The Threatening Eye and as Dr.

What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a row of three shows dominating the three genres with “Shōgun” in drama, “The Bear” in comedy and “Baby Reindeer” in limited.

Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Much like her character in Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Carla Gugino is an actor who feels like she’s everywhere.
From her film work in “Gerald’s Game,” “Spy Kids,” “Watchmen,” and more, to TV roles dating back to “Saved by the Bell” through “Entourage” and as recent as “The Girls on the Bus” on Max (I had to spare a few moments of our interview to bring up Greg Berlanti’s “Political Animals”), Gugino feels as powerful, versatile, and ubiquitous as Verna, the shape-shifting devil puppeteering the eponymous fall.

David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

Paula Vogel’s Mother Play is Jessica Lange’s fourth Broadway show, among the many other film and television projects that have populated her decades-long career.
But unlike her past roles, in which she has put her own spin on well-known characters, such as Mary Tryone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, she had a chance to do something different with this play: originate a part in a new piece of theater.
“I wasn’t nervous. I just honestly had no idea what to expect,” Lange said. “It was a great unknown to me.”
In the play, Lange takes on the role of Phyllis, mom to Carl, played by Jim Parsons, and Martha played by Celia Keenan-Bolger. The story, which is loosely based on the playwright’s own family life, follows the family through several decades, and several apartments, as Phyllis, a aesthetics-focused, gin-swilling force, grapples with her circumstances as a single mom,...

Two-time Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange will receive this year’s CineMerit Award at the Munich International Film Festival, honoring her “remarkable contributions to the world of cinema.”
In addition to her two Academy Awards — for best supporting actress in Tootsie in 1983 and best actress in Blue Sky in 1995 — Lange can point to a total of six Oscar nominations, three Emmy wins (from 10 nods), five Golden Globes (from 16 noms) and one Tony award.
Alongside her impressive film career, Lange has more recently become something of a muse for Ryan Murphy, appearing in multiple seasons of American Horror Story — she’s picked up five Emmy nominations and two wins for the FX drama — and has been dazzling as Joan Crawford alongside Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis in the FX/Hulu miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan.
