What does it mean to be a good mother? Is it the ability to cook the perfect meatloaf or a talent for bird calls? Is it an impeccably turned out family each Sunday morning and an organized recycling setup? These may be important to a picture-perfect suburban life, but when it comes to being an effective mother, they’re merely window dressing. What truly makes a mother succeed is a dedication to the wellbeing of her children. But should that extend to murder? John Waters explores these questions in the 1994 film Serial Mom featuring a murderous mom who will do anything to give her kids a happy life.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Baltimore native John Waters is filmdom’s pencil-mustached titan of trash who has spent a lifetime of dumpster-diving into a vat of bad taste, sleaze, kinky gross-outs, over-the-top camp, maudlin melodramatics, sick jokes, taboo sexuality, vulgarity and bizarre personalities. At least he has a fabulous sense of humor. The director is a New York University film school dropout who instead became a scholar of transgressive, envelope-shredding cinema, influenced by the directorial likes of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Federico Fellini, William Castle, Douglas Sirk and Ingmar Bergman. Early on, Waters assembled a stock company of players from suburban Baltimore who he would the Dreamlanders, including Mink Stole and Edith Massey.
But Waters would find his true muse and favorite leading lady in his childhood friend, Glenn Milstead, a drag queen whose alter-ego was known as Divine. When Milstead died at age 42 from an enlarged heart in 1988, Waters’ output went more mainstream, with...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”
As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.
Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.
The promise is embodied by the tinge of self-awareness in Julie Anne Prescott (The Amityville Harvest)’s screenplay,...

Nicole Richie has been a “diehard fan” of the 1991 cult comedy “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” for as long as she can remember.

The new film stars Simone Joy Jones as Tanya, a 17-year-old whose summer plans are upended when her mom (“Ms. Pat” star Patricia Williams) checks herself into a health retreat. And just when you thought Hollywood would shift away from the remake and reboot craze, news of another remake just arrived. In 1989, Hollywood legend Danny DeVito directed the satirical black comedy The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The film was based on the 1981 novel of the same name written by Warren Adler. The movie follows a wealthy couple with a seemingly perfect life that crumbles at one point, and the perfection soon turns into a horrible and outrageous divorce.
The original movie was critically acclaimed and was a success for DeVito. Today, 35 years after the original, it has been reported that a remake of the movie is in the making, with Jay Roach attached to direct. On top of that, some interesting casting information has been revealed.
Namely, alongside this, it has been confirmed that Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for his interpretation of a...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will star in Jay Roach’s remake of The War Of The Roses, titled The Roses.
Another day, another remake is in the works in La La Land. Well, technically, it’s another adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War Of The Roses, but most people are familiar with 1989’s film adaptation, which memorably starred Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas and was directed by Danny DeVito.
The new adaptation will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the central couple, who proceed with a very nasty, yet very entertaining, divorce.
Jay Roach has signed on to direct, while recent Oscar nominee Tony McNamara is penning the script. The film will simply be called The Roses.

With this reimagination being made for modern times, the themes and elements of this classic film might be changed to a certain extent, which will be interesting to see. But at the same time, this news has not been taken too joyfully by audiences who loved the original and are calling it out for being non-creative and unnecessary.

If you say the phrase "war of the roses," chances are that most movie watchers will think of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a combative couple rather than any historical bobbins between the houses of Lancaster and York. But going forward, film fans may instead picture Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the troubled pair, as they're starring in a reimagining of the William Adler novel that Danny DeVito brought to screens back in 1989.
Jay Roach, who has swung between comedy and political movies, is on board to direct what will this time be simply titled The Roses, with Poor Things' Tony McNamara writing the adaptation.

But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentment that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
“‘The Roses’ is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,” said Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield announcing the project. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life.”

Aubrey Plaza will lead the cast of ‘Feel-Bad’ romance Liarmouth, which marks John Waters’ first directorial outing in two decades.
John Waters hasn’t made a film in 20 years, but he’s set to bring his demented brand of comedy back to the silver screen, along with a leading actor who should prove equal to his ambitions.
Waters’ last film was 2004’s A Dirty Shame which starred Tracy Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Chris Isaak. That was his comedy about sex addiction. In the 1990s alone, Waters also gave us Pecker, which featured Edward Furlong taking pictures of perverts, and Serial Mom, the 1994 black comedy featuring the mighty Kathleen Turner as a mother who doubles as a serial killer.
Waters’ style is certainly unique and the idea of a new film from him after all this time is a welcome one. What’s more, he’s found a leading actor to...

For fifty-nine episodes, Sophie Turner played the role of Sansa Stark on the hit series Game of Thrones. For sixty-two episodes, Kit Harington played the role of Jon Snow on that same show. And now Turner and Harington are set to work together again, as Deadline reports that they have both signed on to star in the Gothic horror film The Dreadful! This film is coming our way from writer/director Natasha Kermani, who has previously directed the thriller Shattered, the sci-fi drama Imitation Girl, and the horror film Lucky, as well as multiple short films and a segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/85.
The Dreadful will be set against the backdrop of the War of the Roses, which took place from 1455 to 1487. The story follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen, who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns,...

Network crime procedurals are a dime a dozen, so what led to "Bones" taking off the way it did? It helped that Hart Hanson's series had a sense of humor about itself, combining terrifying serial killer storylines with episodes about alleged deaths by chupacabra or FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and forensics expert Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) donning ludicrous wigs to go undercover at a demolition derby. But above all else, "Bones" was more interested in the home lives of the Jeffersonian Institute's employees than their field and lab work.
To be sure, Boreanaz and Deschanel's chemistry kept viewers hooked, even after Booth and Bones finally abandoned their will-they-or-won't-they rumba to get married, settle down, and start a family. Not that the series gradually evolved into a rom-com disguised as a show about solving murder cases -- it was always that! Really, if there was ever even...

Don Murray, who rose to fame co-starring with Marilyn Monroe in 1956’s Bus Stop and enjoyed a prolific career that stretched into the 21st Century with Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017, has died. He was 94.
His death was announced by his son Christopher to The New York Times. No additional details were provided.
Murray was Oscar-nominated for his debut performance as Beauregard “Beau” Decker, the lovestruck cowboy who falls for Monroe’s saloon singer Cherie in Joshua Logan’s Bus Stop, an adaptation of the William Inge play.
A conscientious objector during the Korean War who fulfilled his service obligation by working in German and Italian refugee camps, Murray became known for building an acting career in what were once called “message” movies, films with socially responsible themes. In Fred Zinnemann’s A Hatful of Rain (1957), he played a morphine-addicted war veteran, and in 1962 starred as a closeted (and blackmailed...

Argylle isn’t likely to gain the fame and following of other fictional spies like James Bond, Jack Ryan, and Jason Bourne. The PG-13 film begins with the titular character (Henry Cavill) trapped in a room with multiple assassins. He quickly uses his skills and a smoke screen to escape and gives chase to a double agent (Dua Lipa) trying to flee the country.

It takes a very specific kind of brain trust to craft something as uniquely baffling as Argylle. If you’ve been to a multiplex in the last 7 or 8 months, you’ve likely borne witness to its obnoxious trailer. If you haven’t––bless you, sweet lamb. In most cases, a trailer should have absolutely no bearing on the quality of a film. Plenty of great films are marred by bad marketing; others propped-up by the opposite. In this instance, it’s a bit of the latter, but the thing unique to Argylle is that it feels reverse-engineered for a poppy trailer: with candy-coated visuals and enough familiar faces to pass as an attempt at a young, fresh spy blockbuster. Since the nagging, memable question of a “real Agent Argylle” has been forced upon our collective consciousness, it will no doubt usher some of the more morbidly curious into a theater,...

“You have a choice,” super spy Aiden (Sam Rockwell) tells novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). “You can either come with me and live, or you can go back and get your cat.”
It’s a hard decision for Elly to make. She loves her cat Alfie, her companion not just on lonely nights when she writes the latest entry in her hit spy novel series but also her passenger on a trip across the world, courtesy of the backpack carrier she wears throughout the film. But as Aiden points out, another wave of bad guys are on their way. And while his superhuman skills saved the day once, he doesn’t believe he can protect her through another assault.
The viewers do not share Elly’s indecision. We want her to save the cat. So ingrained in audiences is the desire for feline safety that “Save the Cat” has...

Exclusive: Matthew Vaughn reveals that last year he received what he terms “flattering” offers to sell Marv Films, the production company behind productions that include the Kick-Ass and Kingsman franchises and the Apple Original Films romance spy-thriller Argylle. That film is having its world premiere today in London, ahead of its February 2 U.S. theatrical release through Universal.
Marv is owned and controlled by Vaughn and Claudia Schiffer, his wife of 23 years. At the time, he says, “everyone was buying everything, and it was all very flattering and tempting.”
Vaughn admits he that nearly entered into a deal to sell, but his biggest mentor — whom he won’t name — cautioned him, saying, ”There’s no money in the world which would make it worthwhile for you having a boss.”
Vaughn shot back, “What do you mean?” And his friend went, ”Trust me, it will be a f*cking disaster.”

Romance. Adventure. Bickering. Mudslides. Alligators are ready to devour you at a moment’s notice. This is all at the heart of Romancing the Stone – the movie and the production. Before it became a hit with audiences – which took some time itself – the script was developed by a sole waitress…before landing at the feet of an Oscar winner before bouncing between studios before finding itself the victim of poor press before a miraculous recovery at the box office. With additional backstories of mended feuds, career skyrocketing, and tragic deaths, it reads like something out of a book – not those trashy paperbacks but almost something even more unbelievable: the making of Romancing the Stone.
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!

The former Misfits and Utopia star loves pushing boundaries. But, as a drag queen out for revenge, in his new erotic thriller he’s ventured into truly novel territory
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett loves an erotic thriller. “The Bedroom Window with Elizabeth McGovern. Body Heat with Kathleen Turner. The Last Seduction … I mean, basically, I love all of those movies,” he says.

His life derailed by the attack, Jules withdraws into himself, until a chance encounter at a gay sauna reveals two useful pieces of information: first, that Preston, the gang’s ringleader, is himself gay, and second, that Preston hasn’t recognised his former victim out of drag. With the passing of Matthew Perry breaking the hearts of Friends fans everywhere, tributes have begun pouring in online, with many noting how the always upbeat show was therapeutic to those going through rough times. I, for one, binged on the show during the pandemic. As the world shut-down around me, it was comforting to jump into a show I loved so much growing up. To my delight, the series worked (for me) just as well as it did twenty or so years ago. To pay tribute to Matthew Perry and his iconic portrayal of Chandler Bing, we here at JoBlo thought it would be a good idea to list our picks for the best Chandler episodes.

Matthew Perry is being remembered by his TV parent Kathleen Turner.

In the wake of the untimely and tragic death of Matthew Perry, many people are sharing their favorite memories and moments from his performance as Chandler Bing in the long-running, beloved sitcom "Friends." Over the course of 10 seasons and 236 episodes that people have watched and rewatched and rewatched ad infinitum, there is so much material to choose from -- whether it's the sly, sarcastic one-liners Perry would throw out to fill a space of uncomfortable silence, or the large-scale physical gags that he was equally adept at. Of course, there are also the tender moments that people remember from his relationship with Courteney Cox's Monica.
There is one particular element of Chandler's character you will not see people reminiscing about. Whenever a show lasts as long as "Friends" did, there will inevitably be storylines from the show that the audience doesn't like, and there will be just as...
