Hi. Yes. Sorry to bother you. Hello. Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and Savior, Deborah Vance? The Emmy award-winning series "Hacks" has just finished its phenomenal third season, one that many fans (myself included) were terrified wouldn't be able to match the triumphant heights of season 2. The second season ended in a way that felt complete if Max were to have pulled the plug on the show, but after the absolutely dynamite season 3 finale, "Hacks" has proven itself as a series that can and should continue as long as stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder want to keep playing Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels, respectively.
It's exciting as a "Hacks" fan from the very start to see so many people finally catching onto what is arguably the best comedy show on TV that isn't "Abbott Elementary" or the not-really-a-comedy brilliance that is "The Bear," especially...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Bulletproof,” the Season 3 finale of “Hacks.”
The hacks of “Hacks” are moving up in the world, but not without a cost.
After tireless work alongside Ava (Hannah Einbinder), Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter), the penultimate episode of “Hacks” Season 3 saw Deborah finally land the late-night hosting gig she’d been dreaming of since having her first chance taken away decades ago. In the finale, titled “Bulletproof,” her celebration gets cut short as she starts to prepare for the onslaught of pressure to come.
It hasn’t been long since Deborah reinvited her sister Kathy (J. Smith-Cameron) into her life after cutting her off years ago for having an affair with her husband, but she then distractedly whittles down a weekend they’d planned together to a single day, during which she reveals that she secretly had their parents’ remains removed...

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Return to the Suck Zone It’s been 28 years since Jan de Bont’s Twister stormed through cinemas, grossing $496 million worldwide. Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has launched development on What Kids Want, a new feature scripted by the Like a Boss duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, sources tell Deadline.
The film follows up the high concept comedies What Women Want (2000), starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and What Men Want (2019), starring Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan, both of which were distributed by Paramount. While the former centered on a man suddenly gifted (or cursed?) with the ability to hear the thoughts of women, the latter reversed the equation. The new film will, of course, involve a look into the minds of children.
Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo for Little Engine Entertainmemt. Matthews comes to the project after producing What Women Want, along with such rom-coms as 13 Going on 30, All My Life (alongside Garner) and Isn’t It Romantic?...

“Twisters,” set to be released July 19 and one of IndieWire’s most anticipated movies of summer 2024, arrives a whopping 28 years after the original “Twister” landed in theaters. That was the perfect amount of time for a whole fandom to spring up around the 1996 movie, with devotees obsessed with its scrappy stormchasers in it for the science, all vying with evil meteorologists only in it for the money (because meteorology is such a lucrative field!), its windblown CGI cattle, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s make-the-most-of-it line readings, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his best early roles.
Glen Powell, the star of “Twisters,” alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, shares that fandom. During a recent interview with Powell, this writer mentioned how much I love the original film and how unique it is as a “comedy of remarriage.” It’s the specific type of screwball comedy that’s about a separated couple...

Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin Entertainment was one of the production companies that backed up the 1996 film Twister. The hit disaster thriller starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, and Cary Elwes introduced storm chasers trying to contain a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. Spielberg also served as an executive producer (EP) on the film.

“Twisters” executive producer Steven Spielberg didn’t want Anthony Ramos to use a Southern accent for his role, according to the actor.
Ramos, who plays storm chaser Javi in “Twisters,” said in an Entertainment Weekly interview that he thought his character would have a Southern accent.
“Then I heard Steven [Spielberg] was like, ‘No, I want him to do it in his dialect,'” Ramos recalled. “It was a little surprising to me, but it was really cool, to me, because I’ve never heard someone who speaks in my vernacular — especially this New York, Northeast, Latino dialect that I have — in a movie of this size, in a place like Oklahoma. It makes me feel it’s possible for a kid from the hood to go to a school like Ou, study meteorology, be this brilliant meteorologist and storm chaser. This is something that a kid like me could do.

Universal has unveiled a new trailer for Twisters, its upcoming sequel to the 1996 disaster thriller starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The new spin on the franchise (pun very much intended) features a cast of rising stars including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, and Kieran Shipka, as well as Superman himself, David Corenswet, and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe.
But of course, the real stars of Twisters will be the tornados wrecking havoc — including one that quite literally catches on fire. Watch the newly revealed trailer below.
Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is set to open in theaters on July 19th, 2024.

Being from the Midwest myself (and even facing tornado warnings in the past few weeks), it seems that the severe storms will be hitting no matter what as the spiritual sequel to Twister touches down in theaters this July. This year has seen some crazy tornadic activity for states like Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. However, Lee Issac Chung’s Twisters is taking them to a whole new level. Universal Pictures has just released the new three-minute trailer for the summer thrill ride, looking to outdo any of the cyclones that Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt encountered in the 1996 original. This time Daisy Edgar-Jones partners up with the “Tornado Wrangler,” played by Glen Powell.
The official synopsis reads, “Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City.

It's been 28 years since Jan De Bont's "Twister" ripped through theaters and whipped up a $496 million worldwide gross. In the meantime, it's become a weekend cable mainstay, where viewers can tune out its wafer-thin plot and simply enjoy the foul weather spectacle. It's far from a classic, but its visual prowess is undeniable, and its colorful cast of storm chasers led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt seem to be having a ball. Any film that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jami Gertz, Todd Field, and Lois Smith is bound to be fun on some level.
So why has it taken so long for Universal to make a sequel to the second-highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1996?
"Twisters" didn't exactly have a stormy development process, but it did go through a couple of iterations over the last four years. Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct in early 2020. When that fell through,...

Break out Tom Cruise’s famous coconut cake, the wait is finally over. “Hacks,” TV’s funniest comedy about comedy, is back after a lengthy hiatus. The new season, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Max, is as sharp and funny as ever as the two friends find their way back to one another when Deborah decides to have another go at hosting a late-night show. But it’s the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder — easily one of TV’s best...

Fred Schepisi is set to direct Israel-based thriller “The Dimona Affair,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on the story of a whistleblower who claimed Israel was building a nuclear weapons program. (The country has always denied it has nuclear weapons).
After giving The Sunday Times of London a detailed interview about the program in the 1980s, causing an international scandal, “low level” Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu fled the country. He was then reportedly lured to Rome by a female Israeli secret service agent in a honeytrap operation where he was kidnapped and repatriated to Israel. Vanunu eventually stood trial for espionage and treason before being convicted and jailed.
Schepisi, whose last feature project was “Words and Pictures” starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binochein 2013, is set to direct from a script penned by screenwriter and investigative journalist Morrie Rosmarin.

Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.
The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.
“The Curse” explores the tumultuous lives of a married couple (Fielder and Stone), who encounter a string of misfortunes while filming an HGTV series in New Mexico. Their challenges are compounded by a dubious “curse” and a manipulative producer (Safdie), which together threaten both the show and their relationship.
Stone, fresh off her second best actress Oscar win for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” is eyeing her first Emmy nod. She seeks recognition for her portrayal of Whitney, the co-host of the couple’s show about eco-friendly homes. Additionally, Stone is vying for a guest comedy actress nod for...

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

“Hacks” is back on Max for Season 3 on May 2, and the streaming service released a new trailer for the Emmy-winning comedy on Tuesday.
In Season 3, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) reunites with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) after Deborah fired her at the end of Season 2 so Ava could pursue her own dreams. Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. She has to strike while the curling iron is hot.

Twisters might be all tornadoes wrecking the Earth, but at the heart of it is a good banter romance, and that’s what Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have got going on in the latest trailer shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.
That gal-guy back and forth was what was also at the heart of the original 1996 Twister movie starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.
“You think you can interrupt a tornado,” Powell’s cowboy tornado chaser asks Edgar-Jones’ city girl.
“In theory,” she answers, “in the field and in the moment, I got it wrong. We never had a chance.”
“You want one?” Powell asks, giving her an invitation for a good time.

It's been nearly 30 years since tornadoes took the box office by storm with the arrival of the thrilling summer blockbuster "Twister," starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as a pair of estranged ex-lovers who also happen to be passionate storm chasers. Now, Universal Pictures is stirring the storms up yet again with "Twisters."
Though early reports indicated that "Twisters" would follow the daughter of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's characters, it appears the movie is a stand-alone sequel without any characters from the original movie returning. Instead, this is a new chapter following Daisy Edgar-Jones ("Where the Crawdads Sing"), Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick"), Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights"), and Sasha Lane ("Loki"), in an original story that promises to bring the high-speed suspense of "Twister" back to theaters.

There are plenty of ways to describe what happened at Caesars Palace on Wednesday when Universal Pictures delivered Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters to the Colosseum stage. Some examples: The film whipped up a frenzy; exclusive footage spun through Sin City; action scenes blew away theater owners, etc., etc.
All of the above work as Universal debuted never-before-seen scenes of the summer release courtesy of Chung and his castmembers Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, who turned up for an extended introduction.
Chung was first to walk out — an appearance that marked his first time at CinemaCon — and the director said that many in the audience might be wondering why he decided to jump into summer blockbuster tentpole territory after carving out a career in independent film. “I’ve been fascinated by tornadoes all my life,” he said, adding that he grew up in Arkansas, where tornadoes were just a way of life.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have somehow found a way to make relentless natural destruction sexy.
The leads of “Twisters,” along with costar Anthony Ramos, showed up onstage at the annual movie theater owners gathering CinemaCon to offer a first look at the sequel to the 1996 adventure film “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
The chemistry between the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Normal People” stars was palpable. The exhibitors ate up Powell as a cocky “tornado wrangler” fond of strutting in wet t-shirts and pushing an absurdly tricked-out pickup truck. The actors were also open about their intense filming conditions, saying they shot in 120-degree heat, got hit with a jet engine, smothered with hay, had a water tank dumped on them, got pelted by ice, were covered in trash and dragged by wires.

‘Hacks’ stars and producers prep for show’s overdue Season 3 return by defending why women are funny
At last, our long national nightmare is nearly over.
It only seems like the much-decorated Max comedy “Hacks” has been away forever. It’s actually been less than two years. Overcoming strikes by writers and actors and a health crisis involving star Jean Smart – who won the Emmy for Best Comedy Actress in each of the show’s first pair of seasons – the series returns for Season 3 on May 2. The streamer will roll out two episodes on May 2, 9, 16 and 23 before running the finale of the nine-episode season on May 30.
“Hacks” was something of an Emmy juggernaut in 2021 and 2022 before going Awol due to a 10-month production delay in 2023. It earned 15 nominations in its first season and 17 in its second. It converted six of those 32 nominations (which included a pair of Best Comedy series bids) to wins, including the two for Smart as well as for the show’s writing and directing.
It only seems like the much-decorated Max comedy “Hacks” has been away forever. It’s actually been less than two years. You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Gerri is heading West.
J. Smith-Cameron, the actress best known for her two-time Emmy-nominated performance as acid-tongued general counsel Gerri Kellman on “Succession,” is joining the cast of “Hacks” Season 3 as a recurring guest star, Variety reports.
Details of Cameron’s role are being kept under wraps, but it’s very easy to see her trading barbs with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), or being polite but cutting with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder).
“Hacks” is a Max comedy series about the professional and personal relationship between an aging Las Vegas stand-up comic (Smart) and the young writer (Einbinder) she hires to help her modernize her material. Smart has won two Emmys for her performance, and the series has earned two nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, among many other nominations.
The main cast also includes Paul W. Downs (who co-created the show with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky), Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins,...
