Editor’s note: This list was originally published in June 2018, and has been updated multiple times since to reflect new comings outs and groundbreaking LGBTQ castings. It could never and will never be complete, but we hope it reflects the changing face of Hollywood as we bid hello to Pride 2024.
With LGBTQ stories in film and on TV more popular than ever before, it’s important to celebrate out-and-proud acting talents — particularly those without the non-binary awards’ categories they deserve.
In 2024, the state of Hollywood is unsure to say the least. But even as existential questions about the business of making entertainment persist, audiences and artists are grappling with equally critical questions of representation on screen. Among those questions: should queer roles be played exclusively by queer actors?

Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most transformative actors who is not afraid to experiment with his roles. The actor has played some of the wildest, unique, and wacky characters that audiences loved, cementing his status as a bankable movie star. His collaborations with director Tim Burton have resulted in some of the finest works of his career.
Johnny Depp became a teen idol starring in the hit series 21 Jump Street | Fox
One of Depp’s best films is his first collaboration with Burton in 1990’s Edward Scissorhands. The film and Depp’s titular role made him a household name. However, he wasn’t the first choice for the role as many A-list stars were considered for it initially. Depp, being from the TV world, never thought he would get the part and almost didn’t go for a meeting with Burton.

Tom Hanks is known as the ‘Dad of Hollywood’ due to his penchant for choosing good-guy roles in his movies. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, and more in his extensive filmography. He even won the Oscar twice in a row for his performances in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.
Having established himself as a legendary actor in Hollywood history, Hanks has extensive knowledge in performing and even gave a small exercise for this generation’s most beloved ‘Tom’, Tom Holland. The Spider-Man: Homecoming star was given an exercise that tested his skills by the veteran actor while on The Graham Norton Show.

Johnny Depp almost walked away from even auditioning for “Edward Scissorhands” with Hollywood heavyweights Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and even Michael Jackson vying for the lead role.
In the upcoming untitled Tim Burton docuseries, which debuted at Tribeca 2024, Depp says he felt “pigeonholed” as a teen star from his “21 Jump Street” fame, People magazine wrote. The television series ran from 1987 to 1990, and Depp admitted he “was probably doing my best for probably the last two years to get fired” from the show.
It wasn’t until Depp read Burton and Caroline Thompson’s script for “Edward Scissorhands” that he felt connect to a role.
Depp said the screenplay “passed through everything, anything, solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It’s exactly what I should be doing.

The Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborations are certainly prolific. While Depp was a teen star on the Fox series 21 Jump Street, he had a weird creative force inside of him that a high school cop series didn’t fulfill. Then came a new movie called Edward Scissorhands that paired Depp with his long-time director friend. Deadline reports that Depp is being featured in a new docu-series that’s a retrospective on the career of Tim Burton, and the actor reveals who he beat out for the part of Edward.
According to People, Depp said the competition was stiff for the titular character and names like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, were being considered for the role. Depp explained that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story.” Depp admitted to thinking, “He’s never going to cast...

Johnny Depp reveals in Tara Wood’s still-untitled documentary on Tim Burton (via People) that Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Michael Jackson were all in contention for the iconic role of Edward Scissorhands in Burton’s 1990 movie of the same name. Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story,” Depp says. With so many A-listers up for the part, he nearly rejected the chance to audition despite desperately wanting the role.
At this point in Depp’s career, he was feeling “pigeonholed” by the success of being a teen idol thanks to his series regular role on “21 Jump Street.” Part of the reason why he signed up for John Waters’ 1990 comedy movie “Cry-Baby” was because he had to “fight” against his teen heartthrob persona and Waters’ film allowed him to skewer it, which “was the first solid step in the direction I wanted to go.

The 1984 summer movie season kicked off in May and early June with a flurry of blockbusters. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" opened to a gargantuan $25 million over Memorial Day weekend, and, unconcerned about getting chopped up in the mega-sequel's wake, Paramount scored a $17 million debut the following weekend with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." If you're thinking the studios might sit out a weekend while these films dominate the box office, Columbia and Warner Bros opted to throw a couple of haymakers over the June 8 three-day with, respectively, "Ghostbusters" and "Gremlins."
And then, on the fourth weekend of the summer movie season, Hollywood at last took a breather. With kids fresh out of school, the studios sat back and watched the aforementioned titles continue to flourish, while other pricey gambles (e.g. "Streets of Fire" and "Once Upon a Time in America") flopped.

In his widely illustrious career spanning more than five decades, Steven Spielberg has begot a cornucopia of critically acclaimed films. Based on Stephen King’s novel, this film featured Tom Hanks as prison guard Paul Edgecomb and Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey, a death row inmate with mysterious healing powers. The penitentiary’s harsh and eerie setting provided the perfect backdrop for the supernatural events depicted in the film. The anime that follows the life of an alien superhero has been running in Japan since 1966 and has featured several sequels and reboots.
While Ultraman is a famous superhero in the East, he has yet to break ground with the Western audience. That’s about to change, as critics have hailed the Netflix adaptation of the Japanese Superhero before its June 14 release on the streamer.

Despite his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out some of the biggest names in film (and music) for his breakout role.
The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous role in Tim Burton’s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands.

Depp ultimately landed the role of the loving outcast, who was created by a scientist (Vincent Price) with scissors in place of his hands. With Inside Out 2 hitting theaters soon, I figured that now would be as good a time as any to look back at the 2015 original nearly a decade later. When Inside Out first released, Pixar was in arguably the studio’s first slump period. After 15 years of universal acclaim and box office dominance from 1995’s Toy Story to 2010’s Toy Story 3, the studio put out the critically reviled Cars 2 and the middlingly received Brave and Monsters University all in a row.
All three films still made money and Brave even took home the Best Animated Feature Oscar that year, but it nevertheless felt like Pixar had lost some of that original spark. But then came Inside Out; a completely original story from Pixar veteran Pete Docter, who had previously helmed Monsters Inc. and Up that took the studio’s “What if x had feelings?” formula to its logical...

Wes Anderson has reportedly put together another impressive ensemble of actors for his next feature-length film. Entitled The Phoenician Scheme, it’s described as father-daughter espionage tale with a darker tone than some of Anderson’s previous works.
As previously reported Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, and Mia Threapleton will have starring roles in the film. Now, per the German industry website Crew-United, other cast members include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hanks, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, and Antonia Desplat.
The Phoenician Scheme recently wrapped filming in Germany and is presumably targeting a 2025 release. It’ll mark Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City.
Earlier this year, Anderson won his first-ever Academy Award for the Roald Dahl short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Four of Tom Hanks last seven major roles have ended up on streaming services – yet have the films been pretty much forgotten already?
In February of 2023, we got something of an endangered species: a surprisingly positive box office story. That a movie had overperformed against fairly gloomy expectations, and turned into a success on the quiet.
That film was A Man Called Otto, released by Sony and directed by Marc Forster. An English-language remake of Oscar-winning Swedish film A Man Called Ove, what was interesting about the movie’s success is it’s the kind of film that’s apparently not supposed to work in cinemas. Aimed at an older audience, without showboaty effects or Roman numerals, and with a fairly morose central character: this is the stuff that streaming services want to devour.
But Sony gambled, put it into cinemas, and took home over $100m worldwide. That’s not Spider-Man money obviously,...

Tom Hanks and filmmaker Steven Spielberg attended a special ceremony in Normandy at the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The Saving Private Ryan star appeared emotional as he watched American D-Day Veterans receive France’s highest honor, the Légion d’Honneur, from President Emmanuel Macron.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. The biggest sitcom stars of the 1970s roughly in Hanks' age range were getting star vehicle...

After ruling the film industry, Kevin Costner recently took television by storm thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. Now, he is all set to return to the big screens and this time, it will be with his very own saga. Horizon: An American Saga is not just two or three films; it is a four-part American epic Western. Not only do the films star Kevin Costner in the lead role, but he has also directed, produced, and co-written them. Talk about an all-in-one deal!

The saga did not come easy. Kevin Costner had been pitching his idea to studios for a long time but he was always greeted with pushback. But that didn’t mean that the actor was going to give up on his dream project. He decided to take things into his own hands. Despite failing a few times before, he was...

While Tom Hanks is renowned for his iconic acting skills as one of the best veteran actors in the entire entertainment industry, he is also quite famous for the powerful relationship he shares with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
If anything, their 30+ years of being in love have transformed them into being regarded as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.

But while fans know the duo for what they are today, not many know how it all started. Ironically enough, the beginning of this pair’s legendary friendship before they fell in love has something very close to do with one of Hanks’ best qualities.
In fact, the actor even sported this quality in Forrest Gump and transformed it into one of his most celebrated masterpieces: His storytelling skills!

Tom Hanks was fated to lead Penny Marshall’s comedy feature that made history more than three decades ago. But, as it turns out, two rather exceptional actors reportedly passed down the film that was well on its way to becoming a box-office sensation.

Both Batman star Michael Keaton and Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner were apparently offered to play the ebullient protagonist in the fantasy drama, Big. But thanks to their refusals, Hanks ended up swiping the opportunity from them, starring in the first-ever movie by a female director to reach $100 million at the box office.

One major complaint against Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, who are currently some of the biggest names in Hollywood, is they play it too safe with their movies. Despite having starred in dramas early in their career, since their rise to fame in Hollywood, both actors have limited themselves in a bubble and are known for playing themselves in most movies.
But things couldn’t be more different with Tom Cruise, arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, and one of the major recipes behind it is the actor’s willingness to learn.

Reports that Wes Anderson was aiming for a scaled-back cast for espionage thriller The Phoenician Scheme may well have been off the mark.
When reports first surfaced that Wes Anderson’s next film would be an espionage thriller, minds were left agog pondering what he was actually up to. After all, Anderson used the iconography of 1950s sci-fi films to unveil something far more intricate with 2023’s Asteroid City, so who knows what Anderson’s good old spy movie could secretly be a Trojan horse for?
One early report we did hear suggested that for this film, Wes Anderson would be scaling back his cast and not working in the same ensemble-driven way that he so often does. That report now looks like it could have been wide of the mark (or perhaps things simply evolved) as the full cast list for the film has now been released and well,...

Newly minted Oscar winner Wes Anderson has now wrapped production on his next feature, The Phoenician Scheme, in Germany. Now the full ensemble has been unveiled, featuring many familiar faces from the director’s cinematic universe.
Anderson’s recent Asteroid City collaborators Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, and Bryan Cranston have joined, according to a German crew posting, as has his Henry Sugar star Benedict Cumberbatch. One of the films that Michael Keaton had done before donning the cape and cowl in Tim Burton’s Batman is the 1986 cultural merging comedy Gung Ho. The movie came from Ron Howard after making a splash with….well, Splash — a Tom Hanks/Daryll Hannah comedy from 1983. Then, Howard went on to direct the hit film Cocoon with Steve Guttenberg in 1985. Cocoon is also a film that we’ve headlined in our column about hard-to-find movies. However, in a strong step for this Ron Howard film, the video label Kino has announced the release of a 4K restoration on Bluray for Gung Ho.
The movie would open at number one at the box office in March of 1986 with a $7 million opening and finish its run with $36 million. Interestingly, a TV series based on the film would actually premiere later that year in December of 1986. That version would star Scott Bakula...

President Joe Biden marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day in a speech with a warning of current perils to democracy, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the risks of a fracturing of the NATO alliance.
Before dozens of surviving veterans, a number of them centenarians who traveled for the Normandy ceremony, Biden said, “We are not far off from the time, the last living voices of those who fought and bled on D-Day will no longer be with us. So we have a special obligation. We cannot let what happened here be lost in the silence of years to come.”
Among those in the crowd were Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, whose Saving Private Ryan and Band Of Brothers helped elevate the stories of D-Day — including the sacrifices and heroism of servicemen — to new generations. June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France. Code-named Operation Overlord, it marked the largest amphibious invasion in military history and resulted in the defeat of German Nazi forces at Reims.
Some films portray the soldiers who set foot on the shores of Normandy, portrayed by actors including John Wayne, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Lee Marvin, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Tom Sizemore, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti and more. Others focus on Winston Churchill, who made the call for Britain to join the invasion. Two Churchill biopics, starring Brian Cox and Gary Oldman, came out in 2017 and depict the strenuous decision the prime minister made.

It’s “Barbie” meets the Dark Universe.
Mattel, the toy company/studio behind last year’s mega-blockbuster “Barbie,” has teamed up with Universal Pictures and prolific screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman and his company Weed Road to develop “Monster High,” a live-action theatrical film based on a popular line of dolls.
Launched in 2010, the Monster High line consists of fashion dolls inspired by horror movies, monsters from folklore, and other bits of spooky pop culture, which have in turn inspired an animated web series, an animated TV series, video games, book series, and a live-action made-for-tv musical. Monster High is aimed at girls 7-14 who want something different from Barbie.
The cinematic world of “Monster High” is built around a high school in the town of New Salem attended by the children of famous monsters. The characters include Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride; Dracula’s daughter Draculaura; and Clawdeen Wolf,...

This is the latest in a flurry of deals between Mattel and Hollywood studios as it continues to exploit its IP following the $1.446 billion success of last year’s Barbie.

Hey, it worked for Barbie.
Mattel’s next feature film based on a doll will be a live-action, theatrical Monster High movie written and produced by Akiva Goldsman and distributed by Universal Pictures. The gist of the Monster High fashion-doll line is that they are the children of iconic monsters, like Frankie Stein (the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride), Draculaura (the daughter of Dracula), and Clawdeen Wolf (the daughter of a werewolf mom and a human dad).
Goldsman’s banner Weed Road will produce the film. Goldsman, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of “A Beautiful Mind,” is also a producer on Mattel Films’ upcoming Major Matt Mason movie starring Tom Hanks. The announcement of that toy adaptation, which is set up at Paramount Pictures, preceded “Barbie.”
Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur De Koos will oversee the Monster High movie for Mattel; Greg Lessans has oversight for Weed Road.

Oscar-winning writer-producer Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road are partnering with Mattel, Inc. and Universal Pictures to develop a live-action theatrical Monsters High film, based on the multimedia franchise of the same name.
We’re told that Goldsman is only producing, not writing, so the assignment remains open for now.

The NCIS universe is getting a big expansion quite soon as the franchise is set to welcome two more spinoffs into the family with one of them putting its focus on Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ earlier years as a Special Agent. The upcoming series hasn’t received its release date yet, but what we definitely know so far is that Mark Harmon’s role is now officially passed to Austin Stowell.
Though NCIS’ lovers may never have heard the actor’s name before, his filmography is surely worth checking out, as it features some quite famous flicks, and you probably never knew Stowell was in there too.

Damien Chazelle’s breakout directorial work that back in 2015 earned numerous accolades and prestigious awards got Austin Stowell for portraying Ryan Connolly, a drummer in the band supervised by Shaffer Conservatory’s relentless jazz instructor, Terence Fletcher.
While the latter, brought to the screen by J.

Black Panther star’s irritation at repeating herself to successive interviewers echoes earlier comments by Cillian Murphy, Tom Hanks and others

“Masters of the Air” has no shortage of Emmys allure. With a roster of executive producers that includes Emmy winners Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, a highly acclaimed cast, and the fact that it’s a companion series to “Band of Brothers” (2001) and “The Pacific” (2010), which have won a combined 15 Emmys, expectations were high. The Apple TV+ limited series did not disappoint. Want to take an island vacation this summer? All six seasons of Lost are returning to Netflix in the US on July 1, giving die-hard fans and newcomers alike a chance to enjoy the mind-bending drama all over again. The series originally ran from 2004 to 2010, premiering just days before Desperate Housewives and a few months before Grey’s Anatomy. It became an immediate hit, and it all came from an executive named Lloyd Braun sitting on a beach in Hawaii, thinking of ways to turn his vacation into a TV show. Inspired by the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away and the massive, game-changing reality competition series Survivor, Braun came up with a title — Lost — and a vague concept of plane crash survivors and total strangers learning to survive together while leaving their pasts behind.
