As a die-hard Spiderman fan, I can never get tired of watching Spiderman and his different live-action interpretations. However, this movie came in at a time when we had already seen Spiderman's origin story a few times and some were apprehensive if a superhero's origins need to be told that many times. But after watching the film, it seemed Miles Morales' origin story was a much needed one, and the writers found a refreshing way to present it. It is unlike any other animated film, in a way that it does not conform to the traditional animation styles. It instead does something very bold and uses a blend of animations and textures, almost seeming too experimental at times, but the end result is pure awesome. The crazy, comicy, lively, psychadelic animations make you feel like you're inside a comic book. The film doesn't take its animations too seriously and nothing is off limits, but is still able to deliver a solid narrative with strong emotions. I also love that while most super-hero movies would introduce the superhero alter ego of the protagonist halfway through, Into the Spiderverse takes its time to show us the struggles of Miles Morales coming to terms with the immense responsibity that comes with being Spiderman.
Perhaps what I loved even more was the emphasis on Miles' relationships, specifically with his parents, which turned Miles into an interesting and complex character. The film beatifully captured the struggles of parenting, caused often by the generation gap between teenagers and their parents, the troubled replationship between Miles' dad and his uncle, Miles' attachment to his uncle and ofcourse the subtle, playful romance between Miles and Gwen. It is this web of intricate relationships between characters that reflect the complex nature of our real world relationships, which make us relate to these characters, even when they are only drawings.
The soundtrack is nothing short of inspiring, the action scenes are extremely creative and well thought out, sticking true to Spiderman's key characteristics, yet giving Miles and his Spiderman their own personality. There is a lot going on in this movie, yet it is easy to follow and it is going to take a few re-watches to catch every reference, callback, cameo and detail, since the film is full of them! In all, its a visually stunning, exciting and fun film to watch. It is truly an artistic masterpiece. It is hilarious, it has a lot of Spiderman in it with a compelling and never-seen-before story. Its a gift to all the Spiderman fans out there!
