Sugar (2024)
Bad Noir
I don't know why other people like mysteries or thrillers, but I like a lot of them because they have relatable characters. They aren't rich, living in worlds I have no interest in. I really despise the excesses we're supposed to admire. I hate it. I want to see worlds where real average people are represented. Not some millionaire ahole, no. The British know how to create human stories, because as many issues they have with class divisions they at least examine these issues in their shows. But not American creators. Nope. The directors and show runners that actually get funded for projects here really want to shove a certain kind of lifestyle down our collective throats. I just really miss seeing human stories set in the US, about average people. Preferring shows shot on location with little green screen. This is not worth my time, but some people will enjoy this. It's not for me. I didn't think the character development was the least bit interesting, nor was the shooting style or yge world any of them inhabit.
Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema (2018)
Excellent series about women who make films
This series has a great deal of information you'll not find anywhere else. I appreciate the spotlight being directed toward female creators. The number of women able to get stories on screen is still dismal. I hope it goes into the actual legislation created by men like the Heys code, which was deliberately created to silence women filmmakers.
These men found their exploration into their own sexuality threatening. So they constructed laws to prohibit these expressions.
I will get a lot from this series that also includes examining the craft elements of film. The only grievance is the film is directed by a man! Why isn't there at least a women involved as well? It feels a bit hypocritical. I am always happy when there are allies who want to assist in telling women's stories, but what I really want are women telling their own stories. Or at least participating in the telling. I know documentaries are typically not working with a large budget, but it would have been nice for them to hire a women AD or co-director. Every credit one is able to add to your CV makes it much more likely you'll get more.
Holding (2022)
Wonderful characters
Slow burn mystery series unlike any other you'll see anywhere. A lot has been said about why people watch these procedurals. It's because we are able to relate to many of the characters.
Some of the most baffling yet endearing characters exist here in this exploration of human relationships and family dynamics of people most of us can relate to. It's not filled with rich people like most television seems to be these days. Instead, it is filled with people just trying to do their best with what they have. The mystery is just a small part of this exceedingly charming series set in a small town and women created.
Normal Is Over: The Movie 1.1 (2019)
Excellent documentary
This documentary will likely be disturbing for a lot of people who live comfortably at the expense of our natural systems and other human beings. I'm autistic. I have an ability like others on the spectrum to rapidly aggregate, organize and process data about things I am passionate about.
I have been passionate about nature my entire life.
Things so called normal people with their normal sensory systems and abilities to recognize pattern disruptions are easy for me to see in their complexity. My emotions do not color my judgment as I am interested in facts, not crying over spilt milk. I see a problem and want to fix it so much I used to self harm when I couldn't when I was a young person.
Now, as an adult I am far more interested in focusing that energy on those responsible for the pattern disruptions which lead to devastation and chaos many rich men profit from.
Degrowth and a doughnut economy has peaked my interest for many years. And it is quite interesting to connect the inequality across the world to climate. Almost obvious really. But who is actually doing this? Not many economists. There are some out there. The Real World. Economics Review blog has many articles engaging with some of the ideas presented here.
Ideas presented by world experts, but also passionate activists seeking to make even a small localized change for the future. Anyone who doesn't understand the links between consumption and the devastating impacts this has on the only livable environment we have is going to be very shocked as climate change events destroy us all. All the things people love. Their stuff, their comfort and clout chasing endeavors will end and life will become only about survival.
If we all commit to simple lives and focus our energies on building resilient systems that offer food security and water permanency, we will be saving natural capital for ourselves instead of allowing all of these necessities to become owned by a few billionaires. Our natural capital should not be for sale and our leaders must protect it for generations to be secure well into the future.
Okavango: River of Dreams - Director's Cut (2020)
Okavango is beautiful
However, I do not like "documentaries" where the spectator is watching suffering for entertainment. I know documentary filmmakers say they do not interfere because they are only there to "observe", but you are there. You are already interfering. There is an episode where a lioness is badly injured and lays in pain for a week with a torn shoulder and crushed foot. This team should have had a veterinary team come to assist her as much as they could. I get she is wild, but you could tranq her and at least ameliorate her pain and do as much as possible for her injuries to give her the best chance for her and her cubs to survive. With biodiversity plummeting across the planet because of US, it's galling that we just sit and watch someone suffer and possibly die because we can't be bothered to "interfere". We should always help those in need and follow the golden rule no matter who it is, human or otherwise. Treat others with the concern and kindness you would like them to show toward you. Always. The world would be better for it. I also hate the opening song. It should have been a song made by someone from Botswana.
History 101: Nuclear Power (2020)
Incredibly editorial and very disappointingly dichotomous
I find this episode most problematic in this otherwise somewhat interesting series. Without making it complicated, the problem is simply that the authors decided to throw in a dichotomy between choosing fossil fuels and nuclear energy. It's a false dichotomy and unnecessary. I wonder what the motivation is for the authors to push nuclear energy which is currently fission and by their own admission extremely risky? It seems at odds with the rest of the series and the episode itself. After chronicling the ways in which nuclear reactors have ended in tragedy and lives lost as well as a grim history of toxic waste dumping and cancer causing radiation leaks we are supposed to accept it as the only way to move out of the use of fossil fuels? Why? Florida could power itself on solar. It could, but until legislators discontinue hand outs to fossil fuel companies and stop levying fines on people who go off grid that won't happen. Talk about that.
Also, how in the hell do you bring up Jimmy Carter and not mention the solar panels he put on the White House? Or how about mentioning his speech to the American people advising them to curb consumption? It's stupid how much we consume. Stupid. Gross. Inordinate. Excessive. Disgusting. Perverse. Unnecessary. Why work to consume things that make no one happy, but the billionaires who reap in profit while the rest of us are immiserated?
The Misery Index (2019)
I would like this better
If the impractical jokers weren't on the show. If your maturity level rates above a 13 year old boys', they are difficult to find funny. They do seem nice enough though.
I also think it could be much better if there was more female input on the show itself. What the creators find interesting or funny is pretty limited. Or simple. They need someone capable of critical thought.
