Poor Things (2023)
Extraordinary
Loved loved loved this. I can see why it's a divisive film as it is strange and cerebral but Bella's character act is truly beautiful to watch. Her unbending authenticity and personal growth is engaging and Emma Stone was simply sublime. My only beef is Mark Ruffalo cannot do accents and it was a little distracting to hear his posh Dick Van Dyke strangulation of an English accent. I love him as an actor but, like Keanu Reeves, should stick to his native tones.
I knew next to nothing going into the film, other than the recent Oscar wins and was pleasantly surprised it lived up to the hype - and then some
The pace, set designs, costumes, characters all mean a feast for the senses. Highly recommended.
Great Expectations (2023)
Why bother calling it Great Expectations?
If you want to write an original story, at least have the guts to do so rather than butchering a classic. Changes for the sake of it aren't big and they aren't clever. This series grates on every level. It may have worked better if the producers called it something entirely different, like "Below Par" or "Huge Disappointment"
I have no clue as to why everyone's character has changed so significantly. Even Miss Havisham's original and admittedly misjudged reasons for bringing Estella up to wreak revenge on men is blown out the water with an arranged marriage that Estella has no say in. Misogynistic in the extreme, which is the polar opposite to the intentions of Miss H and Estella both in the original sublime novel. I'm all for modernisation, playing around with the storyline but this bears so little resemblance to Dickens and to be offensive.
A Serial Killer's Guide to Life (2019)
British Indie Film at its best
Thoroughly enjoyed this having come to see it without knowing anything about it. Quirky and tightly written, well acted and filmed despite a ridiculously low budget. I'm not sure why it has such a low rating to be honest!
