The Baxters (2024)
Roma does it again!
I'm not a BLMer or someone who sees race behind every corner but Roma has done it again. Some years ago Roma Downey got into a little bit of trouble with her casting in the series The Bible. By and large, the bad people were dark skinned and the good people were white. So it is not surprising in The Baxters that the problem husband is black, leaving room for a white good guy to save the day. It's hurtful and disappointing but not surprising. I think little Roma has an issue with black men. It happens. After watching two and a half episodes, I realized that the show a bit too predictable to be my cup of tea.
7 Toughest Days (2023)
Nerve wracking
I like this show but it was a bit nerve-racking to watch because of not knowing what's next, which is part of the fun. Granted, he knows more about what's coming up than he lets on but I'm just watching it as a consumer I was a little stressed out, especially in the dense forest. He is quite the adventurer though, and really does some amazing and often crazy feats. I was surprised at some of the negative comments. All adventure shows are heavily produced. Of course he's not as alone as it seems of course because there is a crew there. But how can you not marvel at his adventurous spirit, his skills and the breathtaking scenery?! I gave it an 8/10 because he does complain a little much for my tastes.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (2023)
Too rough for my blood
I knew this special would be very Chris Rock with lots of language, but some of his lewd references even just five minutes in led me turn it off the special. I really wanted to hear his jokes about the Will Smith incident, but it wasn't worth the cost of my need to stand guard at the door of my mind, and that includes my ears.
One would hope that for both Will Smith and Chris Rock, last year's event would draw them inward and ultimately to God for forgiveness of their sins and weaknesses, like we all have to ultimately do, but Chris isn't there yet. He seems coarser and more bitter and jaded than ever. We often can't control what happens to us in life, but we do have some say and how we respond to it, and our best response always comes after presenting our bitterness, anger, fears, and all of it, to Jesus. Again, Chris just isn't there yet.
Signora Volpe (2022)
Italy is the star
This was on Hoopla. It is a murder mystery set in lovely Italy. The main character Fox brings smarts, calm, and curiosity to her character, but Italy remains the star. Each episode is a slow whodunnit with no real surprises. There are little jaunts away from the main murder that round out the story like family relationships, food, and townspeople's issues. All in all though it is too calm and polite and ultimately was not engaging enough for me. Also the extra-marital flirtations and more are disappointing and unnecessary. Murder seems to be the start of moral compass for Sylvia. She's so soft-spoken and sweet that she makes everything less than that seem ok.
Chrissy's Court (2020)
Concentrated badness
This show is so morally reprehensible that I don't even know where to begin. She treats it like humor but she's actually going to be held responsible for the nonsense that she's dishing out. The show I saw had two people who were drunk and that was their excuse, and Chrissy went along with it. So I can do pretty much anything as long as I'm drunk, I'm innocent? Sad. I hope she find a bit more purpose in her life 'cuz I don't think this is it.
Killing It (2022)
Ruined
The premise of this show is intriguing and what could have been a great family show was ruined in the first minutes with profanity. I'm trying to keep my mind on pure things and guard what goes into my mind, and limit TV shows to ones that help me do that and this is not one of them. I was looking forward to watching a comedy about a Black entrepreneur. Oh well.
Michael Ian Black: Very Famous (2011)
True Colors in 5 Minutes of his Black Heart
Within 5 minutes this "comic" showed his meanness towards women with the B-word which is common enough and can be in our jaded society quite funny, and the C-word which never has funny use. I was done.
Intrusion (2021)
Lost opportunity, Meera
When she have the chance, Meera should have scratched his face to smithereens so that others would know what was going on. But she did redeem herself. In all such movies the plot hinges on the characters not contacting the police when they should. If they did, there would of course be no movie.
Secret Obsession (2019)
Detective, please!!
SPOILERS!!!
My biggest gripe with this is the detective who is played by actor Dennis Haysbert. However as this detective has an awfully bad script. He finds out that her parents are dead and yet he goes to that fantastic house alone without back up. It's predictable but it's so darn annoying I could almost scream! The rest is predictable: of course he survives. I was glad to see a damsel in distress actually take some clear action, pick up the gun and do what she needed to do. And because of that, my fellow (re)viewers, it gets four stars.
The Oval (2019)
Bankrupt
There is something sinister about this show. It really has no redeeming value. I have watched some Tyler Perry movies that have been fine for what they are. This show however seems depraved. Basically every scene is of someone who is morally bankrupt. I think Tyler Perry says that he is a man of faith, but this show makes me wonder if he has lost his way.
