Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958)
Unspoilt Costa Brava
Mainly filmed on location and the villa they used still stands and was then British owned. It's called La Musclera and you can find it on Google Earth with a label paratge de la Musclera 5 Tamariu a couple of kilometres South of Tamariu village on the main road, GIV6542.
I saw a review suggesting it was studio based certainly there is some studio work, but the majority was shot on location. And what a wonderful location, a villa with a private beach overlooking the Mediterranean sea.
And made before the area was destroyed by overdevelopment.
A tightly constructed and suspenseful pllot. The first 'adult' film I was taken to see when I was 14. I still love it.
Endeavour: Terminus (2021)
Poor Russell Lewis
Time he took a break. You can try too hard you know. Possibly he did intend it to be funny, but Morse and Lewis never were...
Come back refreshed Russell. SWALK.
The Way We Live (1946)
Abercrombie's disaster
Read Simon Jenkins critique. Yet another socialist disaster. The film was made by the woman who would become Michael Foot's wife.
The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre: The Verdict (1964)
Pink Panther?
Interesting because it appears to use extraordinarily similar musical arrangements to the Pink Panther films!
Situation Hopeless -- But Not Serious (1965)
Proof that even our greatest actors sometimes need cash
Nothing more need be said....very unamusing.
Proof that even our greatest actors sometimes need cash.
Band Waggon (1940)
It could only be English
A very early example of that English vein of odd ball humour that led to so much classic TV. And in fact the BBC pre ww2 TV service forms the basis of the plot. There are even some examples of the the first EMI vidicon cameras!
Rock You Sinners (1958)
Pre Beatles
You can see why we welcomed the talents of the beatles, and of course the more discerning of us had rejected 'TinPan Alley' in total and relied on American music from Radio Luxembourg. Some unfortunate souls were diverted for a time by 'folk' music and the horrors of Trad Jazz. But we purists were already importing Tamla Motown records...
Columbo: Strange Bedfellows (1995)
Steiger is brilliant
A very underrated episode for some reason. Rod Steiger has a beautifully executed cameo.
Amadeus (1984)
Forget the music, it's the accents
I really could not get past the dire American accents on most of the leads... Ruined it. I suppose Forman wouldn't notice.
It's Trad, Dad! (1962)
Even worse than Plan 9 from Outer Space
To think that this was going on when I was listening to Radio Luxembourg and enjoying American pop. I studiously avoided 'trad jazz', tin pan alley's attempt to hold on to the teen audience. Thank goodness they failed and the Beatles and Stones got things moving here.
This is truly dreadful...
