The Last Challenge (1967)
Mixed Thoughts
The acting was performed well. But, I always wondered why the "wanna be" gunslinger wore his pistol backwards and therefore, couldn't possibly bring it to bear on a target faster than the person he was facing. I realize it was a movie gimmick but, it just begs belief.
So, Ford did well, Dickinson gave a par performance (A wee bit over the top in spots) and poor young Everett well, he got saddled with an unbelievable handicap. A handicap I just couldn't get past when I watched the movie.
Dawson City: Frozen Time (2016)
Some Film, Some Photos
If you are a student of the Yukon and Dawson City, sit close to the TV with your reading glasses on, captions are small. Soundtrack adds nothing to the film and, for me, became distracting then ... irritating ... very irritating.
The recovered film and salvage is a story in itself I'm sure for historians and film buffs.
For the historian, current and former residents of Dawson City, this will hold your interest I'm sure. For others? I'm not so sure.
I live in Alaska and have visited Dawson City many times. I would suggest a visit rather than this movie if all you have is a passing or general interest.
Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Great Late-night Viewing
Buckner wrote a "puff piece" story. I'm pretty sure neither the writer, producers, studio, etc. intended any historical accuracy. This is just pure, enjoyable entertainment design to entertain, draw an audience, and make some money.
Massy is a grand "nutso." The rest of the cast give workman-like efforts.
A great late-night movie when stumbled across on the TV.
Firecreek (1968)
Wasted Effort
Another one of those movies which makes you wonder why anyone invested good money to make. A totally unbelievable plot which requires a suspension of belief I couldn't muster. "High Noon" all over again with respect to a village full of people unwilling to defend themselves. I simply couldn't buy into it.
Even a cast of proven players couldn't save this. Was only the cast caused me to rate at two stars. They did well with a weak, very weak story line.
Gardens of Stone (1987)
Caan at His Very Best
Coppola's fine production is unparalleled. The conflict between Caan and Huston is a tremendous and balanced treatment of the anti-war v. the military. If there is one movie which reflects the times. in all its facets ... this is it.
Caan's finest role, I believe, played perfectly.
Jones' voice, his carriage, etc. all combine into a truly believable, hard nosed yet, compassionate Sergeant Major. I think every member of the cast brought something to the movie, something good and grand.
"Here's to us and those like us."
"Damn few left."
High Noon (1952)
Great Cast, Unimaginable Plot
Imagine a town full of Civil War vets, hardscrabble farmers, fully invested business folk, and hardened frontier types where no one, not one, supports their lawman. I understand all movies require a some suspension of belief, I get that. But, "High Noon"? Watch because of the notable cast not, the storyline.
