Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé (2023)
The best concert film I have experienced!
Beyoncé's 'Renaissance' is not just a concert film; it's a masterclass in performance art. Building on the formidable foundation set by 'Homecoming,' this film elevates every aspect: cinematography, sound design, and insightful documentary footage. Personally, having experienced the Renaissance World Tour live, I can attest that the film authentically captures, and at times, surpasses the concert's brilliance.
The sound design is a revelation. Witnessed in IMAX, it's an auditory spectacle. The bass reverberates through your body, while Beyoncé's vocals are a perfect blend of power and warmth. I don't think I've ever head Beyoncé sound better, even in a live setting.
What surprised me was the emotional depth in the documentary segments. Unlike previous works, 'Renaissance' delves deep into Beyoncé's familial bonds, the album's inspiration, and the particularly arduous planning and rehearsal phases. It's more than just a behind-the-scenes look; it's a journey into the soul of the project, sharing the spotlight with those who inspired and contributed to this monumental experience.
The concert footage is simply breathtaking. Regardless of personal opinions about Beyoncé, her ability to deliver an unmatched live performance is undeniable. The film magnifies this brilliance with its stellar camera work, editing, and sound design. The film rips through concert dates, in Everything Everywhere All At Once style editing, and the fashion explodes onto the screen. So many colours and expert concert lighting, it all just looks and sounds so incredible. It's impossible not to be sucked into this experience.
'Renaissance' is a testament to the evolution of concert films, much like Beyoncé has redefined live performance throughout her career. This film is a transformative experience, leaving me as exhilarated as when I attended in person. It's a must-see, not just for fans of Beyoncé, but for anyone who appreciates groundbreaking artistry in music and film.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Epic
I just love this movie. It's not perfect, but what I have always been a fan of Zack Snyders superhero movies, they just have a certain flavour and style that distinguishes them from the admittedly incredible MCU. The theatrical Justice League was wieghtless, entirely forgettable, but this film has depth, characterisation and a full story. I watched all 4 hours and I didn't want it to end. One of my favourite superhero movies.
Black Is King (2020)
This is ART
How has this got 2 stars? The level of racism in this world is astounding. This is an exceptional display of black culture, unbelievably awe inspiring visuals, where music, dance, fashion and acting comes together To what can only be described as ART.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
The most ENTERTAINING of the sequels
I loved force awakens, and was pretty impartial to the last Jedi. This movie for me, is the most watchable movie of this trilogy. There's lots of action, the film is very fast paced and constantly engaging. The plot did seem thin at times, almost like a video game style plot, but the character payoffs and explanations I thought were great and highly satisfying. My complaints are mainly to do with palpatine who is one of my favourite villains of all time. An explanation for his survival is not at all given, and I think his place in this trilogy is not very well justified. That being said his presence in the movie was huge and it was great seeing the big bad of the Star Wars at the end of the saga. I think the main problems with the movie are in the first 40 mins or so, where scenes just wiz by, and there's so much explained it almost feels like this should've have been a 3 hour movie, and honestly for the 9th film in the saga I think this sort of runtime would be warranted. Although there are flaws this is most likely the film from this trilogy I will watch most. I like this movie for the same reason I liked Revenge of the Sith. The constant action is great while still having the necessary character moments to end this trilogy.
The Lion King (2019)
Great Film
Okay in truth I don't believe this movie is perfect but nevertheless I'm giving it 10/10 because of the bad rep this film is getting. Yes it is difficult to get the emotions of the film, when animating ultra realistic animals, but this is the trade off. The film looks absolutely stunning! It's almost photorealistic and is such a technical achievement that I'm willing to look past the fact that the characters can't emote in the same way that a cartoon style animation offers. The voice acting is absolutely superb. Timone and Pumba I would argue are even better in this film, and all around the voice acting is incredible. Even Beyoncé does a great job in her role as Nala. The music is on par with the original and the score is as goosebump inducing as the original as are the songs. The new Beyoncé song which is added is also incredible and fits in the overall movie and story, and adds more to the character of Nala. Overall this is an excellent retelling of the original, maybe it's a cash grab, but this is Disney we're talking about, and I definitely preferred it to the other recent remakes, with the exception of Jungle Book perhaps. An absolutely enjoyable remake of the film that touched the world, with stunning visuals, in a new awe inspiring way to tell this beloved story.
