Batoru rowaiaru II: Chinkonka (2003)
A terrifically anti-pacifist struggle against 'adults'
The first film really amazed me at my first viewing as it not only brought me all the gore I could possibly want, it also brought a controversial tale which could easily happen in one of these modern 'superpower' regimes. When I first watched the sequel, I wasn't in the slightest impressed and very much related it to a war film. However, I watched it again last night (probably about 3 years after first watching it) and it struck me as having such a strong political message of a radical uprising. Just as Guevara led the Cubans to revolution 1959, Shuya Nanahara attempts to lead his force of oppressed people to live in a society free of 'adults'.
At times in the film I felt things were a little ridiculously inaccurate. For example, certain people being shot countless times and still standing.
There were a few moving quotes in the film, my favourite being 'The thing people fear most isn't dying, it's being forgotten'.
The atmosphere of Battle Royale 2 is much different from that of Battle Royale 1, for there is no certainty of companionship in Battle Royale 1. It'd be a foolish assumption to believe Battle Royale 2 would be just like Battle Royale 1, because it isn't. It is a lot more based upon warfare tactics; but that isn't any reason to give this a miss. Whilst it is about people shooting and shooting more so, it is directed in such a way to make it very moving and very easy for me to relate to. For the common exploited person, this may be what it'll be like in some years ahead.
I loved the flashbacks; they did have great relevance as they were putting the viewer into the characters head, seeing what they're thinking. I didn't like the basic copy of the D-Day landings; for me it was the least creative part of the whole film.
If you see struggle as needing to be fought, maybe this is for you. Give it a try, I recommend it, and see how it can change your look upon the world. Remember, the word 'adult' can easily be changed to another word of an exploitative character!
Lastly, I am pretty appalled at how Transformers can receive a rating of 7.6 (I saw Transformers as a complete patriotic flick, not going deep into worldly matters in the slightest), and Battle Royale 2 only 4.7. It really shows that the mass are happier about their films than the others.
The Secret (2006)
The Secret to gaining more money and vast amounts of greed
I watched this on my mum's birthday a year ago and was...less than pleasantly surprised with the complete materialist nature of it, and I was lucky to get a phone call from my dad halfway through so got to leave before falling asleep! It reminds me, a lot, of the Scientology religion. If you go for that stuff, I guess you'd like The Secret. Thing is - The Secret isn't a secret at all, it is an attempt by Hollywood perhaps to draw everyone back into this system of always needing more and more money. Money doesn't bring happiness though! If I could give The Secret no stars at all I wouldn't, as it did give me something to rant about for a while, and it helped me get further out of the system.
These people who talk on this talk for a long time about the same things. It is very, very mind-numbing for a socialist un-materialistic youth.
If you're in love with money and everything which goes with it, such as GREED, this may be for you.
Hollywood (2004)
A macabre story about a waitress who is mistreated...
I'd have to give this a 7, because this is a nicely made story which is very clever at the same time, but one must look very carefully to find everything within the story.
A fictional Swedish story, about a waitress who is very much mistreated. Though only 12 minutes long, it definitely shows a beginning, middle and an ending and we get to know the 2 main characters very well.
Very much worth downloading if you can get a hold of it, but unless going cheap 12 minutes of a movie isn't really worth buying or renting.
Still, if you like very random endings then this is for you.
