IF (2024)
Brings back great Child Memories
Before John Krasinski brings his «A Quiet Place: Day One» horror prequel to the cinema, he surprises us with the emotional family drama «IF». The abbreviation stands for «Imaginary Friends» and, like «Toy Story» or «Monsters, Inc.» before it, takes us into the world of childhood heroes that we have generally long forgotten as adults. And so «If» is not just a great children's movie, but also reminds adults of their own childhoods full of fairies, unicorns, wizards and clowns, as well as monsters. From the childishly animated Paramount logo, Krasinski lays the emotional carpet for great Hollywood family cinema. His self-written story pleases with sound (by Michael Giacchino) and vision (by «Schindler's List» cameraman Janusz Kaminski), captivates with grandiose «Cocoon»-moments (see Grandma) and childhood memories (such as the water ballet). Many films have already combined real and animated film, sometimes better, sometimes worse, but this heartbreak drama goes far beyond pure showmanship. Really strong and deep. Great Escapism from todays Horror World. Thanks!
Bon Schuur Ticino (2023)
Pure comedy fun!
Plot: The «No bilingue» initiative demands only one national language from now on! The result: a crazy referendum that throws Switzerland into a chaotic state of emergency. Especially when it actually became national: Switzerland would become monolingual - French! Many citizens experience a crisis as a result. This includes Walter Egli (played by Swiss Comedian Beat Schlatter), who works for the federal police, doesn't speak a lick of French and has to make sure that the transition to monolingualism goes smoothly. Together with his French partner, he is tasked with uncovering a resistance group sprouting up in the south of Switzerland, which is fighting against the implementation of the initiative by any means necessary. - Finally, a laughing movie theater again! - Peter Luisi's Swiss comedy about the possibility of a monolingual (read: French) Switzerland is not only original, but also thoroughly Swiss. With the plot motif of a resistance group, the story threatens to descend into pure slapstick, but manages to find its feet with wit, charm and esprit. It's also nice that a director finally manages to tell his story in ninety minutes again (and doesn't need three or more hours to do so).
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
«Enjoy the Show!»
In times of ever more totalitarian regimes in the real world and omnipresent war news from all over the world, the fictional, deliberately media-critical «Hunger Games» prequel comes just in time: a singing Rachel Zegler and blonde Tom Blyth play excellent roles, Jason Schwartzman (as TV-presenter Lucky Flickerman), Viola Davis (with a piercing gaze) and «Game of Thrones»-star Peter Dinklage are nice additions. The plot is lengthy and epically long (2.5 hours), but once again the décor, the backdrops and the change of location towards the end of the film are fascinating. Original quote: «Enjoy the show!»
